  • The main objective of critical excitation methods is to reveal the worst possible response of structures. This goal is accomplished by considering the uncertainties of ground motion, which is subjected to the appropriate constraints, such as earthquake power and intensity limit. The concentration of this current study is on the theoretical optimization aspect, as is the case with the majority of conventional critical excitation methods. However, these previous studies on critical excitation lead to a discontinuous power spectral density (PSD). This paper introduces some critical excitations which contain proper continuity in frequency domain. The main idea for generating such continuous excitations stems from the combination of two continuous functions. On the other hand, in order to provide a non-stationary model, this paper attempts to present an appropriate envelope function, which unlike the previous envelope functions, can properly cover the natural earthquakes' accelerograms based on multi-peak conditions. Finally, the proposed method is developed into the multiple-degree-of-freedom (M.D.O.F) structures.

  • Underground structures usually consist of rock masses or concretes which can be cracked or have cracks. This study aims to develop an analysis program which can deal with the effect of discontinuous behavior due to those cracks using the block theory. It is assumed that rock masses form blocks along the discontinuity lines, and deformation within the block is relatively small. The behavior of discontinuity plane of the structures is divided into sliding along the discontinuity plane. separation of discontinuity by tensile force, and degradation of asperity angle of discontinuity plane by external force with sliding of rock Basses. These behaviors are implemented using constitutive relation and relevent load-displacement relation defined through normal and shear stiffnesses. Time varying displacements and block velocities are calculated by explicit time stepping algorithm. The effect of rock supports including rockbolts is also considered, and the tending effects which occurs in relatively thin lining is also considered.

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate size effect on inelastic behavior of reinf bridge piers subjected to cyclic load. A computer program, named RCAHEST(Reinforced Co Analysis in Higher Evaluation System Technologr), for the analysis of reinforced concret was used. Material nonlinearity is taken into account by comprising tensile, compressiv models of cracked concrete and a model of reinforcing steel The smeared crack app incorporated. In boundary plane at which each member with different thickness is conne discontinuous deformation due to the abrupt change in their stiffness can be taken into introducing interface element. The effect of number of load reversals with the same d amplitude has been also taken into account to model the reinforcing steel. To determine th on bridge pier inelastic behavior, a 1/4-scale replicate model was also loaded for compar full-scale bridge pier behavior.

  • A defect model e)[plaining the oxygen potential of Gadolinia doped urania based on the defect structure of pure urania has been developed. Gd-dopants are assumed to stay in the cation sites pushing away nearby oxygen interstitials reducing the number of interstitial sites. Gd-dopants also form dopant-vacancy clusters in the abundance of oxygen vacancies. This model explains the discontinuous change of the oxygen potential at O/M= as well as the increase of the potential with the dopant concentration.

  • This paper presents the thermomechanical and fracture mechanics evaluation procedure of thermal striping damage on the secondary piping of LMFR using Green's function method and standard FEM. The thermohydraulic loading conditions used in the present analysis are simplified sinusoidal thermal loads and the random type data thermal load. The thermomechainical fatigue damage was evaluated according to ASME code subsectionNH. The analysis results of fatigue for the sinusoidal and random load cases show that fatigue failure would occur at a geometrically discontinuous location during 90,000 hours of operation The fracture mechanics analysis showed that the crack would be initiated at an early stage of the operation. The fatigue crack was evaluated to propagate up to 5 ㎜ along the thickness direction during the first 944 and 1083 hours of operation for the sinusoidal and the random loading cases, respectively.

  • The block theory with stereographic projection was applied and analyzed on the tunnel section of Samcheok Coal Mine. The results were as follows ; 1) Prevail orientations of discontinuity of sandstone around the main driftway of Samcheok Coal Mine were $(327^{\circ},\;44^{\circ}),\;(13^{\circ},\;24^{\circ}),\;(204^{\circ},\;65^{\circ})$ and $(225^{\circ},\;77^{\circ})$ in dip and dip direction, respectively. 2) Movable blocks of the site were 0110, 0111, 1110(roof), 0100, 0110, 1110(right wall) and 0001, 1001, 1011(left wall). Because of the direction of tunnel, blocks of the left wall was safe. thus key blocks were those of the roof and the right wall. Maximum height of key block was larger than the width of the tunnel but 2m of the yielded zone is expected in general for 5m width tunnel. 3) It is shown that block theory is applicable to large cavern in hard rock analysis.

  • The results are summarized as what follows: 1) The modeling of thin beams, which is a continuous system, into a two DOF system yields satisfactory results for the chaotic vibrations. 2) The concept of "natural forcing function" derived from the eigenfunction of the bifurcation mode is very useful for the natural responses of the system. 3) Among the perturbation techniques, HBM is a good estimate for the response when the geometry of motion is known. 4) It is known that there exist periodic solutions of coupled mode response for somewhat large damping and forcing amplitude, as well as weak damping and forcing. 5) The route-to-chaos related with lateral instability in thin beams is composed of period-doubling and quasiperiodic process and finally follows discontinuous period-doubling process. 6) The chaotic vibrations are verified by using Poincare maps, FFT's, time responses, trajectories in the configuration space, and the very powerful technique Lyapunov characteristics exponents.exponents.

  • The differential equations governing free, in-plane vibrations of stepped non-circuiar arches are derived as nondimensional forms including the effects of rotatory inertia, shear deformation and axial deformation. The governing equations are solved numerically to obtain frequencies and mode shapes. The lowest four natural frequencies and mode shapes are calculated for the stepped parabolic arches with hinged-hinged, hinged-clamped, and clamped-clamped end constraints. A wide range of arch rise to span length ratios, slenderness ratios, section ratios, and discontinuous sector ratios are considered. The effect of rotatory inertia and shear deformation on natural frequencies is reported. Typical mode shapes of vibrating arches are also presented.

  • Three kinds of viscoelastic damper model, which has a non-linear spring as an element is studied analytically and numerically The behavior of the damper model shows non-linear hysteresis curves which is qualitatively similar to those of real viscoelastic materials. The motion is governed by a non-linear constitutive equation and an additional equation of motion. Harmonic balance method is applied to get analytical solutions of the system. The frequency-response curves sallow that multiple solutions co-exist and that the jump phenomena can occur. In addition, it is shown that separate solution branch exists and that it can merge with the primary response curve. Saddle-node bifurcation sets explain the occurrences of such non-linear Phenomena.
