Submarines, which have been called an invisible force, are strategic underwater weapon systems that perform missions such as anti-surface warfare, anti-submarine warfare, and high payoff target strikes with the advantage of underwater covertness. A submarine should be able to withstand the hydrostatic pressure of the deep sea. In this respect, the submarine pressure hull, as the main structural system to resist the external pressure corresponding to the submerged depth, should ensure the survivability from hazards and threats such as leakage, fires, shock, explosion, etc. To do this, the initial scantling of the submarine pressure hull must be calculated appropriately in the concept design phase. The shape of the aft transition ring varies according to its connection with the submarine aft end conical structure, pressure hull cylindrical part, and non-pressure hull of the submarine; the design of the aft transition ring should not only take into account stress flow and connectivity but also the cost increase due to the increased man-hours of its complex geometry. Therefore, trade-off studies based on the four different shapes of the aft transition ring are carried out considering both the review of the structural strength through nonlinear finite element analysis (FEA) and economic feasibility by reviewing the estimations of the manufacturing working days and material costs. Finally, the most rational structural aft transition ring shape for a submarine amongst four reviewed types was proposed.
This paper presents a method for effectively modeling inlay/onlay prostheses restoring a tooth that are partially destroyed. An inlay/onlay is composed of internal surface adhering to an abutment, and external surface revealed to the outside sight. Internal surfaces are modeled using Minkowski sum expanding the grinded surface parts of abutments so that the internal surfaces can adhere to the abutments with closer contact. In modeling external surfaces, we exploit 3D mesh deformation techniques: DMFFD(direct manipulation free-form deformation)[19] and MWD(multiple wires deformation)[17] with three kinds of informations: standard teeth models, mesh data obtained by scanning a plaster cast of a patient's tooth, FGP(functionally guided plane) measuring the occlusion of the patients's teeth. The standard teeth models are used for building up the basic shapes of external surfaces, while the plaster fast and FGP data are used for reflecting the unique properties of adjacent md occlusal surfaces of the patients's teeth, which are slightly different to each other but very important for correct functioning. With these informations as input data, the adjacent and occlusal surfaces are automatically generated as mesh data using the techniques of DMFFD and m, respectively. Our method was implemented so that inlay/onlay prostheses fan be designed more accurately by visualizing the generated mesh models with requirements by dentists.
The structure, dimensions, condition and other characteristics of the Koryo Buddhist Canon (the Koreana Tripitaka) Printing Wood Blocks stored at the Haein-sa Monastery were surveyed to obtain basic data needed for the conservation of the Wood Blocks. The dimensions of the Wood Blocks Were measured and we could figured out the blueprint designed at the time of the carving the Wood Blocks. The dimensions of the wooden board were as follows: width, 8'chi'('cun' in Chinese, 24 cm);thickness, 1 'chi' (3 cm); length, 2'cha' ('chi' in Chinese) and 3 'chi' (68 cm) or 2 'cha' and 6 'chi' (78 cm). The dimensions of the end pieces were as follows: width, 1 'chi' and 5 'fun' (4.5 cm; thickness, 1 'chi' and 4 'fun' (4 cm); length, 8 'chi' and 2-4 'fun' (24.6-25.2 cm). There were 6 types of metal strips and the length of the nails employed was 1 'chl' (3 cm). Investigation on the differences in the length of the wood Blocks and the shapes of the metal strips will be of interest. Since we surveyed only small portion of the Wood Blocks. the result may be different if entire Wood Blocks were examined. The data acquisition of the entire Wood Blocks will be the basis to the conservation of the Wood Blocks.

Floor damping materials used in floating floor system to diminish the floor noise have been made with low density and dynamic stiffness. Owing to this low density and dynamic stiffness, the deflection in these materials under long-term loading and cracking of the floor finishing mortar in the floating floor system may occur. This paper presents the results of long-term loading effects on the deflection of different types of floor damping materials. The experimental program involved the long-term loading tests for 490 days loading period on sixteen specimens. Specimens were classified as DM1(Damping Materials) to DM8, depending upon the four main parameters; types, bottom shapes and densities of floor damping materials and amount of loading. Results indicated that the long-term deflection of all specimens of damping materials remained unchanged after 200 days at all loading amounts, except the specimens made up of Polystrene, in which long-term deflection remained unchanged after 160 days at 250 N load and 100 days 500 N load. In this paper, two types of correlation expressions were shown in the deflection range prior to the range where deflection remained constant; two analyses by ISO 20392 and linear regression. In comparison of two analyses and experimental results on the difference of deflection of 16 specimens, the difference of deflection was below 0.4 mm in those analyses in case of that total deflection was below 10 mm. Restrictively, it was judged that the analysis for the deflection of specimens made up of Polystrene is more appropriate using ISO 20392.

This paper describes an experimental program to investigate the shear behavior of insulated concrete sandwich panels (CSPs) with different types of GFRP shear connector. The study included testing of 13 insulated CSP specimens with two types of surface conditions for extruded polystyrene (XPS) insulation and various shapes of shear connectors. All specimens were loaded in direct shear by means of push-out and were consist of three concrete panels, two insulation layer and four rows of GFRP shear connectors. Load-relative slip between concrete panel and insulation response of CSP specimens has been established through push-out shear test. Test results indicate that the surface condition of insulation has a significant effect on the bond strength between concrete panel and insulation. The specimen used XPS foam with 10mm deep slot shows higher bond strength than those used XPS foam with meshed surface. Corrugated GFRP shear connectors show equivalent strength to grid GFRP shear connectors. Cross-sectional area and embedded length of shear connector have a notable effect on overall response and inplane shear strength of the CSP specimens.
In this paper, we present a method to extract the text lines in poorly structured documents. The text lines may have different orientations, considerably curved shapes, and there are possibly a few wide inter-word gaps in a text line. Those text lines can be found in posters, blocks of addresses, artistic documents. Our method based on the traditional perceptual grouping but we develop novel solutions to overcome the problems of insufficient seed points and vaned orientations un a single line. In this paper, we assume that text lines contained tone connected components, in which each connected components is a set of black pixels within a letter, or some touched letters. In our scheme, the connected components closer than an iteratively incremented threshold will make together a chain. Elongate chains are identified as the seed chains of lines. Then the seed chains are extended to the left and the right regarding the local orientations. The local orientations will be reevaluated at each side of the chains when it is extended. By this process, all text lines are finally constructed. The proposed method is good for extraction of the considerably curved text lines from logos and slogans in our experiment; 98% and 94% for the straight-line extraction and the curved-line extraction, respectively.
Tunnel lining is the final support of a tunnel and reflects the results of the interaction between ground and support system. Recently it is very difficult to support and manage the tunnel because the cracks on tunnel lining cause many problems in supporting and managing tunnels. Therefore the analysis of the cracks is quite strongly required. In this study, mechanical behaviour of a tunnel lining was examined by model tests and by numerical analyses. Especially the model test was examined for double linings including shotcrete and concrete lining. The model tests were carried out under various conditions taking different loading shapes, horizontal stresses, thicknesses of linings and double lining, vault opening behind the concrete lining and rock-like medium surrounding the lining. Due to horizontal stress, compressive stress prevailed on the lining. Thus the bearing capacity of the lining increased. The existence of a vault opening behind the concrete lining reduced the bearing capacity by the similar amount of reduction of concrete lining thickness. Rock-like medium cast around the side wall of the lining restrained the deflection of the lining, and the bearing capacity for cracking and failure increased vary much. In numerical analyses a algorithm which can analysis the double lining by introduction of interface element was developed. And the results of the numerical analyses were compared with the results of the model tests.
Compression, lateral, and opposite woods in a branch of Pinus parviflora S. et Z. were described and compared in the qualitative anatomical aspects through light and scanning electron microscopy. Tracheid transition from earlywood to latewood in the compression wood appeared to be relatively more gradual than in the opposite or lateral wood. Growth ring width and proportion of latewood were thought to be greater in the compression wood than in the lateral or opposite wood. The latewood tracheids of compression wood in transverse surface were mostly round, differently from those of lateral and opposite woods with square to angular shapes. Also, intercellular spaces, helical cavities and checks, and slit-like pit apertures were observed only in the compression wood tracheids. Cross-field pitting in the compression wood appeared not to be used as diagnostic guide because of their severe alteration from normal fenestriform or window-like type to cupressoid to taxodioid types. In tangential surface, fusiform rays in the compression wood were wider but lower than those in the lateral wood or opposite wood. In conclusion, compression wood was different from lateral and opposite woods but lateral and opposite woods were almost identical in qualitative anatomical features.
A breast model was for the human body was devised by studying a body scan and human body index of a desirable breast type. Thus, when manufacturing various 3D models, these results can accordingly become a fundamental basis for realizing a desirable breast model. This study aims to provide a basic data for designing the cup patterns of brassieres in order to improve the function and wearing comfort. The comfort of three kinds of brassieres were compared: one manufactured by the actual measured size; another manufactured as per the ratio of desirable upper and lower breast lengths; and the third manufactured by the 3D model attained by the desirable human body ratio. In this study, we suggest a process for realizing the desirable breast model using the ratio of bust breadth and waist front length, which are the components for deciding the appropriate position and size of breast, and which are easy to measure. The ideal breast shape is an equilateral triangle formed by connecting the nipple with the center of the clavicle. After deciding the interval between the nipples, this value can be used to configure the locations of nipples by drawing a tangent, with equal length, from the anterior neck point (which is the center of clavicle) to the nipple. Also, since inside points of breast do not exist, the outer point of breast, upper point of breast, and below point of breast on the same plane, and the depths from the nipple point to the respective points, are applied to simulate a 3D image, by modifications along the x, y, and z axes. Depending on the type of breast, the length from the center of shoulder to the nipple, the diameter of breast, upper length of breast, and the position of nipple, are different. In conical or protruding breast, the wearing sensation is better when the nipple point of brassiere was lifted, by modifying the upper and lower lengths of breast. Considering the wearing sensation and function of a brassiere, it was better to leave the wearer's size as it is and use a pad within the same cup, rather than increase the basal area of the breast in order to increase the volume.

Objective : Somatosensory evoked potentials(SSEPs) have been used widely both experimentally and clinically to monitor the function of central nervous system and peripheral nervous system. Studies of SSEPs have reported the various recording techniques and patterns of SSEP. The previous SSEP studies used scalp recording electrodes, showed mean vector potentials which included relatively constant brainstem potentials(far-field potentials) and unstable thalamocortical pathway potentials(near-field potentials). Even in invasive SSEP recording methods, thalamocortical potentials were variable according to the kinds, depths, and distance of two electrodes. So they were regarded improper method for monitoring of upper level of brainstem. The present study was conducted to investigate the characteristics of somatosensory evoked field potentials(SSEFPs) of the cerebral cortex that evoked by hindlimb stimulation using ball electrode and the pathways of SSEFP by recording the potentials simultaneously in the cortex, VPL nucleus of thalamus, and nucleus gracilis. Methods : In the first experiment, a specially designed recording electrode was inserted into the cerebral cortex perpendicular to the cortical surface in order to recording the constant cortical field potentials and SSEFPs mapped from different areas of somatosensory cortex were analyzed. In the second experiment, SSEPs were recorded in the ipsilateral nucleus gracilis, the contralateral ventroposterolateral thalamic nucleus(VPL), and the cerebral cortex along the conduction pathway of somatosensory information. Results : In the first experiment, we could constantly obtain the SSEFPs in cerebral cortex following the transcutaneous electrical stimulation of the hind limb, and it revealed that the first large positive and following negative waves were largest at the 2mm posterior and 2mm lateral to the bregma in the contralateral somatosensory cortex. The second experiment showed that the SSEPs were conducted by way of posterior column somatosensory pathway and thalamocortical pathway and that specific patterns of the SSEPs were recorded from the nucleus gracilis, VPL, and cerebral cortex. Conclusion : The specially designed recording electrode was found to be very useful in recording the localized SSEFPs and the transcutaneous electrical stimulation using ball electrode was effective in evoking SSEPs. The characteristic shapes, latencies, and conduction velocities of each potentials are expected to be used the fundamental data for the future study of brain functions, including the hydrocephalus model, middle cerebral artery ischemia model, and so forth.
