Flow through a turbine flow meter is simulated by solving the incompressible Navier-Stokes equations. The solution method is based on the pseudo-compressibility approach and uses an implicit-upwind differencing scheme together with the Gauss-Seidel line relaxation method. The equations are solved steadily in rotating reference frames, and the centrifugal force and the Coriolis force are added to the equation of motion. The standard $k-{\epsilon}$model is employed to evaluate turbulent viscosity. Computational results yield quantitative as well as qualitative information on the design of turbine flow meters by showing the distributions of pressure and velocity around the turbine blades.
Three-dimensional endwall flow within a linear cascade passage of high performance turbine blade is simulated with a 3-D Wavier-Stokes CFD code (MOSA3D), which is based on body-fitted coordinate system, pressure-correction and finite volume method. the endwall flow characteristics, including the development and generation of horseshoe vortex, passage vortex, etc. are clearly simulated, consistent with the generally known tendency The effects of both turbulence model and convective differencing scheme on the Prediction performance of endwall flow are systematically analyzed in the present paper. The convective scheme is found to have stronger effect than the turbulence modei on the prediction performance of endwall flow. The present simulation result also indicates that the suction leg of the horseshoe vortex continues on the suction side until it reaches the trailing edge.
For possibly nonstationary autoregressive moving average, modeling based on the original observations rather than the differenced observations is considered. Under this scheme, sample autocorrelation functions, parameter estimates, model diagnostic statistics, and prediction are all computed from the original data instead of the differenced data. The methods and results established under stationarity of data are shown to naturally extend to the nonstationarity of one autoregressive unit root. The sample ACF and PACF can be used for ARMA order determination. The BIC order is strongly consistent. The parameter estimates are asymptotically normal. The portmanteau statistic has chi-square distribution. The predictor is asymptotically equivalent to that based on the differenced data.
This paper presents a derivation of the capacitance of a shielded microstrip line using the Finite Element Method (FEM). The first approach adopts a 2-D version of Gauss's theorem and an approximation of integral to finite differencing. In this case, the choice of a contour and the size of a mesh affects the validity of the capacitance. Next, the method for deriving the capacitance by using of energy relation is shown. Finally, the simulation results are compared to those of the commercial tool (COMSOL) adopted FEM.
The new discrete elements method (DEM) is applied to the one-group neutron transport equation in one-dimensional slab geometry. The fixed source and the criticality problems are treated and three spatial differencing schemes (the DD, the SC, -and the LC schemes) are tested to determine the most computationally efficient in the DEM. In all cases, the accuracy of the results obtained from the DEM shows an improvement over that obtained from the standard discrete ordinates calculations. And the LC scheme gives the most accurate results in the DEM.
The thin-layer Navier-Stokes equations are solved for the hypersonic flow over blunt cone configurations with applications to laminar as well as turbulent flows. The equations are expressed in the forms of flux-vector splitting and explicit algorithm. The upwind schemes of Steger-Warming and van Leer are investigated in their ability to accurately predict the heating loads along the surface of the body. A comparison with the second order extensions of these schemes is made and a hybrid scheme incorporating a combination of central differencing and flux-vector-splitting is presented. This scheme is also investigated in its ability to accurately predict heat transfer distributions.
The incompressible Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes equations are solved to predict the aerodynamic characteristics of an airship hull. The concept of pseudo-compressibility is employed to couple the pressure field with the velocity field. The upwind differencing method for spatial discretization and a line relaxation scheme for time integration are used. The flowfield around the low drag airship hull of fineness ratio 4 is solved for two Reynolds numbers with a wide range of angle of attack. The effect of Reynolds number and transition position is briefly examined together with the change in aerodynamic coefficients due to a gondola attached to the hull, and the results will be used as basic data for the design of a low drag airship hull.
A numerical investigation on the flame propagation and extinction in a micro combustor is described. Previous measurements of $H_2-air$ flame propagation in a submilimeter scale combustor exhibited significance of wall effects on burning velocity and extinction. The heat transfer to wall becomes important not only in the cooling of burnt gases but also during the flame ropagation, which has be by and large ignored in macro scale combustor calculations. In order to take the heat loss into account the combustion calculation, we developed a numerical code with a heat transfer model that was determined empirically from measured data. PISO algorithm was used for differencing of conservation equations. $H_2-air$ reaction was modeled with 10 species - 16 steps. Comparison with measured data showed good agreement in flame propagation speed. Also the pressure decrease after flame extinction was accurately predicted by the model. A further study is desirable for a better quenching model that can predict the quenching location.
The Equations of Chemical kinetics are very stiff, which forces the use of an implicit scheme. The problem of implicit scheme, however, is that the jacobian must be solved at each time step. In this paper, we examined the methodology that can be stable without full chemical jacobian, This method is derived by applying the different time steps to the chemical source term. And the lower triangular chemical jacobian is derived. This is called the preconditioned time differencing method and represents partial implicit method. We show that this method is more stable in chemical kinetics than the full implicit method and that this is more efficient in supersonic combustion problem than the full jacobian method with same accuracy.
