The effects of Internet addiction on the lifestyle and dietary behavior of Korean adolescents

  • We performed this study to examine lifestyle patterns and dietary behavior based on the level of Internet addiction of Korean adolescents. Data were collected from 853 Korean junior high school students. The level of Internet addiction was determined based on the Korean Internet addiction self-scale short form for youth, and students were classified as high-risk Internet users, potential-risk Internet users, and no risk Internet users. The associations between the students' levels of Internet addiction and lifestyle patterns and dietary behavior were analyzed using a chi-square test. Irregular bedtimes and the use of alcohol and tobacco were higher in high-risk Internet users than no risk Internet users. Moreover, in high-risk Internet users, irregular dietary behavior due to the loss of appetite, a high frequency of skipping meals, and snacking might cause imbalances in nutritional intake. Diet quality in high-risk Internet users was also worse than in potential-risk Internet users and no risk Internet users. We demonstrated in this study that high-risk Internet users have inappropriate dietary behavior and poor diet quality, which could result in stunted growth and development. Therefore, nutrition education targeting high-risk Internet users should be conducted to ensure proper growth and development.

Improving Effect of Extract of Ganoderma lucidum in Atherosclerosis from LDL Receptor Knockout Mouse (LDL Receptor Knockout Mouse에서 영지추출물의 죽상경화증 개선 효과)

  • Objectives : This study was designed to protect effect on atherosclerosis through regulation of low density lipoprotein(LDL) by 70 % ethanol extract Ganoderma lucidum (GL) in LDL receptor knockout mouse (LDLr ko mice) fed Western diet.Methods : The LDLr ko mice were divided into 3 groups ; Control, GL100, and GL300. After grouping, LDLr ko mice were fed Western diet. The GL (100 or 300 mg/kg body weight/day, p.o.) was administered every day for 8 weeks. The body weight and food intake were measured every day. The changes in the levels of alanine aminotransferase (ALT), aspartate aminotransferase (AST), creatinine, triglyceride (TG), total cholesterol (TC), and high-density lipoprotein (HDL) in serum were analyzed after experiment.Results : The LDLr ko mice fed Western diet were increased body weight gain and blood biochemistry parameters such as ALT, AST, TG, TC, and LDL. However GL300 group significantly reduced the body weight. Also TG, TC, and LDL level did not increase. The levels of ALT, AST, HDL were not changed. Also, LDLr ko mice model liver were observed lipid drop, but GL groups did not appear. Futhermore, histological analysis of GL groups aorta tissue were similar to NOR groups.Conclusions : We confirmed that whether GL administration is protect atherosclerosis or not. As the results, blood biochemistry and histological analysis did not changed much in GL administration groups. This study provides scientific evidence that GL protect the atherosclerosis through the reduction of LDL cholesterol. Therefore GL has potential medicine inhibition of atherosclerosis.

A Convergence Study on Effects of Nutrition Knowledge, Dietary Habits, and Dietary Self-Efficacy on Dietary Behavior in Nursing Students (간호대학생의 영양지식, 식이 자기효능감 및 식습관이 식행동에 미치는 영향에 관한 융합연구)

  • This study is a descriptive study to identify nutritional knowledge, diet self‐efficacy and dietary habits of nursing college students and to investigate the factors affecting their dietary behavior. Data collection was conveniently sampled from June 18 to June 20, 2018, for 123 second‐year students at two University located in G City. The data collected were analyzed by descriptive statistics, t‐test, ANOVA, Scheff, Pearson's correlation, and multiple regression using the SPSS 20 program. In the results of the study, factors affecting the dietary behavior of the subjects were found to be school life satisfaction, overeating and snacks frequency, and diet self‐efficacy (adjusted R2=0.48, F=10.28, p<.001). The results of this study have implications that based on factors affecting dietary behavior of nursing students, nursing intervention programs should be developed to promote diet self‐efficacy and to be able to develop healthy dietary habits.

A Study on the Relationship between Job Stress and Health Promoting Behavior among University Hospital Nurses (대학병원 간호사의 직무 스트레스 정도와 건강증진행위와의 관계)

  • Purpose of the study was to identify the relationship between job stress and health promoting behavior(HPB) among nurses. Samples were 426 nurses working in some university hospitals which were chosen by convenient sampling. Data was collected by using constructed questionnaires from March 28th to April 7th 2001. The instruments used for in the study were 'The Health Promotion Behavior' which was developed by Park(1995) and 'The Job Stress' modified by Kim(1998). The data was analyzed by mean, standard deviation, t-test, ANOVA, Duncan test and Pearson's correlation coefficient in the SPSS program. The results were as follows : 1. The mean score of job stress was 3.51 which is meant to be 'more than moderate' level of stress. 2. The total mean score of health promoting behavior was 2.44; 'Management of Sanitary life' 3.12, 'Harmonious relation-ships' 2.95, 'Emotional support' 2.71, 'Diet control' 2.59, 'Self-achievement' 2.57, 'Self-control' 2.31, 'Healthy diet' 2.29, 'Rest and sleep' 2.26, 'Exercise and activity' 2.12, 'Regular diet' 1.91 and 'Professional health maintenance' 1.61 were shown in each HPB category. 3. There were not any statistical differences between job stress and general characteristics of nurses. 4. The health promoting behavior was significantly influenced by factors of age, marital status, education level, religion, position, career and family income of nurses. 5. There was not any correlations between job stress and health promoting behavior.

Diet and Lifestyle Risk Factors of Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia (전립선비대증에 영향을 미치는 식생활 및 생활습관 요인)

  • Benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) is one the most common prostate diseases in middle aged and elderly men. This study was conducted to investigate diet and lifestyle risk factors for benign prostatic hyperplasia in a community-dwelling free-living population group. The dietary data were collected from the 601 male subjects aged 50-79 years using the 24-hour recall method. The mean age of the BPH group ($63.0{\pm}7.9$ years) was significantly higher than that of the non-BPH ($58.8{\pm}7.4$ years). Among many nutrients, the amount of animal fat intake was increased while that of carbohydrate intake decreased in subjects with BPH compared to those with non-BPH. In BPH subjects, the proportion of energy from fat was also greater than in subjects with non-BPH. The logistic regression analysis on the food consumption data showed that the consumption of total animal food was increased while that of mushrooms was decreased in patients with BPH compared to the subjects with non-BPH. The age-adjusted odds ratios and 95% confidences limits for BPH incidence in subjects whose milk and milk products, beverages and alcoholic liquors intake was greater than the median were 1.796 (1.167-2.782) and 1.738 (1.129-2.676) respectively, compared to those in subjects whose intakes were below the median. These results may be applicable in the development of a nutrition intervention and education program toward a reduction in the risk for benign prostatic hyperplasia.

Effects of Resistant Starch on Metabolism of Beile Acids in College Women (효소저항저분이 인체내 담즙산 대사에 미치는 영향)

  • The purpose of this study was to examine the effect of resistant starch(RS) in hyperchlesterolemia and colon cancer. The subjects of this study was eight college women participating in the general starch diet(GSD) period for 5 days and resistant starch diet(RSD) period for 7 days. RSD contains 30g or the RS. On the last day of each program blood were collected. And for the last 3 days of each diet period, the amount of all the food consumed by the subjects and feces were collected. Food was measured to determine and compared the energy, protein and fat intakes. The amount of total cholesterol, HDL-cholesterol, LDL-cholesterol and volatile fatty acids in plasma and the amounts of bile acids in feces were measured by gas chromatography. The results obtained were as follows, Daily energy intake was higher in the RSD compared with the GSD, Protein and fat intakes were lower in the RSD compared with the compared with the GSD. Volatile fatty acid contents in plasma, the amounts of acetic acid, propionic acid and valeric acid were higher in the RSD compared with the GSD. The amounts of bile acids in feces, cholic acid, chenodeoxycholic acid and lithocholic acid were higher in the RSD compared with the GSD, But the amount of deoxycholic acid n the RSD period was significantly low. Secondary/primary ratios of bile acids was lower in the RSD compared with GSD, respectively. We speculate that , RS consumption decreases colonic mucosal proliferation as a result of the decreased formation of cytotoxic secondary bile acids. Thus, RS intakes may contribute the prevention of heart disease and colon cancer in humans. (Korean J Nutrition 33(8) : 802-812, 2000)

A Study for Comparison of Dietary Quality and Vitamin K Intake of Vegetarians with Carnivores (채식선호자와 육식선호자의 식사의 질 및 비타민 K 섭취 비교 연구)

  • The prevalence of chronic diseases have been rising in the developing countries because of their increased animal foods consumption and Western lifestyle. Lately, vegetarian diet that exclude animal products get public attention. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the nutritional status and dietary quality of vegetarians, and their consumption of vitamin K and was also assessed. Vegetarians including strict vegan and lacto-ovo-vegetarian consumed their diet at least over 6 months. Carnivores were gender and age matched with vegetarians and they consumed over 50% of protein and fat from animal sources. Current nutrient intakes and dietary quality were assessed using 3-day food records and intake of vitamin K was calculated from the data base of 'Provisional Table on the vitamin K contents of foods, USA'. Blood sample were collected and biochemical parameters and plasma phylloquinone concentrations were analyzed. Anthropometric data from vegetarian and carnivore were not significantly different. The intake of calories, protein, vitamin $B_2$, Ca and Zn of the vegetarians were remarkably lower than RDA for each nutrient. Moreover, index of nutritional quality and nutrient adequacy ratio of vegetarians were lower than those of carnivore. Vegetarian consumed less fat and the ratio of n-6/n-3 fatty acid was lower in vegetarian. The intake of essential amino acids in vegetarian was significantly lower than that of carnivore. The vitamin K consumption and plasma phylloquinone concentration of vegetarian were significantly higher than those of carnivore (p<0.05). The dietary vitamin K consumption was positively correlated with plasma phylloquinone levels in vegetarian (p<0.01).

Hypolipidemic and Hepatoprotecitive Effects of Picrorrhiza Rhizoma in High Fat Diet Supplied Mice. A Pevention Sudy.

  • The preventive hypolipidemic effect of the aqueous extracts of Picrorrhiza Rhizoma (PR) was observed in a high fat diet (HFD) feeding hyperlipidemic mouse with their hepatoprotective effects. PR extracts (50, 100 and 200mg/kg) were orally dosed once a day for 12 weeks initiated with HFD supply, and changes on body weight and gains, liver weight, serum aspartate transferase (AST) and alanine transferase (ALT) levels were monitored with serum low density lipoprotein (LDL), high density lipoprotein (HDL), triglyceride and total cholesterol levels. The efficacy of test articles was compared to that of 10mg/kg of simvastatin (SIMVA). Dramatic decrease of both absolute and relative liver weight was dose-dependently observed in all PR extract dosing groups as compared with HFD control group. The serum AST and ALT levels were dose-dependently decreased in PR extract dosing groups. The serum LDL, triglyceride and total cholesterol levels were dose-dependently decreased in PR extract dosing groups compared to that of HFD control group. The serum HDL levels were slightly but dose-dependently increased in PR extract dosing groups as compared with control group. The efficacy on the serum lipid levels of PR extracts was slighter than that of SIMVA. Based on these results, it is concluded that water extract of PR has a relatively good favorable preventive effects on the HFD inducing hyperlipidemia and hepatopathy.

A Study on Influencing Factors in Health-promoting Lifestyle of Adolescents (청소년의 건강증진 생활양식과 관련요인연구)

  • The purpose of this study were to define the degree of performance in health promoting lifestyle and to identify the variable related to performance in health promoting lifestyle of adolescents. The subjects of this study were 469 adolescents in the 4 high schools. The sample data were collected using a purposive sampling method from July 1 to July 27. The collected data were analysed by using descriptive statistics, Pearson's correlation coefficients, and stepwise multiple regression with SPSS PC+ program. The results of this research were as follows. First, The means of performance in the health promoting lifestyle of adolescents revealed total 2.478 ; harmonious relationships 3.045, regular diet 2.236, professional health management 1.332, sanitary life 2.910, self regulation 2.558, emotional support 2.696, healthy diet 2.408, rest and sleep 2.651, exercise and activity 2.491, self actualization 2.466, diet control 2.408. The factor with the highest degree of performance was the harmonious relationships, whereas the one with the lowest degrees was the professional health management. Second, the relationship between the degree of performance in health promoting lifestyle and its related variable were as follows. (1) Performance in the health promoting lifestyle was significantly correlated with self esteem, self efficacy, health conception, perceived health status, mother's health promoting lifestyle, mother's health conception. (2) The most important factor that affects performance in the health promoting lifestyle of adolescents was self esteem. The combination of self esteem, health conception, mother's health promoting lifestyle, self efficacy, perceived health status accounted for 45.2% of the variance in health promoting lifestyle of adolescents.

Effects of Dietary Education on Low-sodium Diet Adaptation (식생활교육이 저나트륨식 적응에 미치는 영향)

  • Korean style DASH (Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension) and a dietary education program for sodium reduction were developed. Reduced sodium diets (15 and 30% reductions) were developed from general diets for 3 consecutive weeks from Monday through Saturday. Subjects (19 total) were classified into two groups according to dietary education. Experimental period was from June 24 to July 23, 2012. Total sum of adaptation scores for low sodium diets significantly increased in the group that underwent dietary education compared to that without (p<0.05). After the experiment, both groups showed significantly increased values in terms of food group balance, sodium-related nutrition knowledge, attitude, and practice by paired t-test. Especially, group that underwent dietary education showed significantly higher values for attitudes by ANCOVA pre-test as a variation (p<0.01). For the results of the nutrient intake survey, group that underwent dietary education showed significantly increased values for dietary fiber (p<0.01), vitamin A (p<0.001), vitamin K (p<0.001), vitamin C (p<0.01), Folic acid (p<0.001), vitamin B12 (p<0.01), calcium (p<0.01), iron (p<0.05), and zinc (p<0.05) and significantly decreased values for sodium (p<0.05) and chloride (p<0.005). Subjects adapted to reduced sodium diets showed apparent improvements in sodium-related knowledge, attitude, practice and intake of nutrient, and these improvements were even higher in the group that underwent dietary education compared to that without. Thus, adaptation to low sodium diet combined with dietary education can improve dietary habits.
