Feeding Habits of Released Black Rockfish, Sebastes inermis, in Coastal Waters off Jam Island, Jinhae Bay, Korea (진해만 잠도 주변해역에서 서식하는 방류산 볼락 (Sebastes inermis)의 식성)

  • Feeding habits of released Sebastes inermis obtained in daily and monthly collections from August 2007 to December 2007 in coastal waters off Jam Island in Jinhae Bay, Korea were assessed. A total 151 individuals of S. inermis (6.3-9.7 cm TL) were recaptured during the study period. Initial food intake of released S. inermis occurred within three days of released. Stomach content index increased with time, however, the percentage of stomachs devoid of contents decreased. Sebastes inermis mainly consumed gammarid and caprellid amphipods, gastropods and mysids. Diet also included small quantities of bivalves, shrimps, copepods and ostracods. Amphipods were mainly consumed at all size groups and consumption of gastropods, bivalves and shrimps increased with increasing fish size.

  • Object : This paper is designed to inquire into the influence of eating habits on the emotion of modem people. Method : The methodology is used that searches for materials such as books and treatises on the relationship between eating habits and emotion. Result : Meat used for fast food comes from cows that are fed the feed containing growth hormone and antibiotic. Growth hormone extremely supplements fire or yang within the body while antibiotics undermines the process of yin, leading to an accumulation of damp-heat and inflammation of ministerial fire. Additives contained in instant foods also impinge on the process of yin, leading to poor digestion, damp-heat toxins and ministerial fire. Excessive consumption of meat results in incomplete combustion of fat and hinders the formation of essence. Subsequently, ministerial fire becomes hyperactive as a result of the lack of yin energy. Increased meat consumption in the human diet is coupled with unhealthy eating pattern in which people eat too much for dinner and too quickly. Eating too much disturbs digestion, making it slow and incomplete, leading to excess damp-heat conditions, insufficient amount of vital essence and eventually hyperactive ministerial fire. Milk is considered a catalyst of faster growth, making it suitable for calves. Milk intake rapidly increases the balance of yang and eventually cause hyperactivity of ministerial fire. Conclusion : It is estimated that the eating habits of modern people cause the process of yang, making them feel restless, impatient and aggressive.

Feeding Habits of Larval Clupea pallasii from the Nakdong River Estuary, Korea (낙동강 하구역에 출현하는 청어(Clupea pallasii) 자치어의 식성)

  • We examined the feeding habits of larval Clupea pallasii using 148 specimens collected from December 2010 to April 2011 in the Nakdong River estuary, Korea. We found that larval C. pallasii [8.3-26.0 mm NL (notochord length)] are carnivorous, consuming mainly copepods, rotifers, cirripeds, and free-living flatworms (Macrostomida). Their diet also include small quantities of shrimp nauplii, tintinnids, cladocerans, and larval bivalves, among other food sources. To evaluate ontogenetic changes in dietary composition, we split larvae into four size groups: 8-12 mm, 12-16 mm, 16-20 mm, and > 20 mm NL. Rotifers were the most important prey items for the smallest group, but all other groups predominantly consumed copepods. The largest group frequently preyed on rotifers, cirripeds and flatworms, in addition to copepods. Larvae also showed bi-modal feeding, with peaks in the late afternoon and at midnight, wherein the mean number of prey per individual peaked at 1,800-1,900 h.

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the possible causal factors of obesity in women with child-bearing experiences in effects to provide optimal information for the prevention and/or treatment of obesity. Sventy one women with child-bearing experiences were divided into five groups based on the degree of obesity by BROCA method ; normal weight, overweight, and obesity which was further divided into three groups of light, moderate, and sever obesity. Various anthropomnetric measurements, overall eating habits, and dietery intakes were asessed for each groups. Out of eighteen anthropometric factors asociated with obesity, thirteen measurements were represented to be valid for the diagnosis of obesity. Body fat % which was analyzed by Bioelectrical Impedance fatnee Analyzer were 24.765, 28.05%, and 29.85 for normal, overweight, and obesity group respectively. WHR(waister to hip ratio) or BMI(body mass index) widely used index was also resulted to be valid as a predictor of obesity. Waist circumference which represents abdominal fat mass showed a good correlatin with body fat%. The analysis of dietary intakes suggested that the overintakes of total calorie may not be the only causal factor of obesity, rather the amount of daily protein, fat and carbohydrate intakes or the physical activity level would be more closely related with the prevalence of obesity. Further investigation considering more variety of food composition of diet and the activity level involving larger number of subjects would be needed.

Feeding Habits of Larval Konosirus punctatus from the Nakdong River Estuary, Korea (낙동강 하구역에 출현하는 전어(Konosirus punctatus) 자치어의 식성)

  • We examined the feeding habits of larval Konosirus punctatus using 165 specimens collected from May to August 2011 in the Nakdong River estuary, Korea. We found that larval K. punctatus [3.9-8.4 mm notochord length (NL)] are carnivorous, consuming mainly rotifers. Their diet also included small numbers of rhizopods, tintinnids, euglenoids, copepods, larval bivalves, dinoflagellates, diatoms, and unidentified materials. To evaluate ontogenetic changes in dietary composition, we split the larvae into three size groups: < 5 mm, 5-6 mm, and > 6 mm NL. The smallest size group frequently preyed on rhizopods. As NL increased, the number of rotifers increased relative to those of rhizopods. Larvae also showed bimodal feeding for feeding incidence, with peaks in the midafternoon and at midnight, while the mean number of prey per individual peaked at 18:00-19:00 h.

  • The feeding habits of bluefin searobin (Chelidonichthys spinosus) were studied based on the examination of stomach contents of 646 specimens collected from January 2005 to December 2005 in the coastal waters off Busan, Korea. The size of C. spinosus ranged from 14.0 to 38.9 cm in standard length (SL). C. spinosus mainly consumed shrimps such as Solenocera melantho, Leptochela sydniesis and Trachysalambria curvirostris. Its diet also included crabs and fishes. Smaller individuals (15~25 cm SL) consumed small shrimps such as L. sydniesis, crabs and fishes. The portion of these prey items decreased with increasing fish size, and this decrease was paralleled with increased consumption of lager shrimps such as S. melantho and Trachysalambria curvirostris. The prey size increased with the increase of fish size.

  • Purpose: The purpose of study was to examine the relationship between obesity and its associated factors (psychiatric symptom, duration of illness, type of medication, physical activity, dietary habits, depressive symptom, and stress) in patients with chronic mental illness registered to community mental health welfare centers. Methods: This was a cross-sectional correlation study using a convenience sampling. A total of 392 participants were recruited from community mental health welfare centers. The obtained data were analyzed using binary and multinomial logistic regression. Results: Atypical antipsychotic medication, duration of illness, dietary habits (overeating, and drinking instant coffee) were significantly contributed variables into body mass index (BMI) obesity. Atypical antipsychotic medication and instant coffee were significantly related to abdominal obesity. Conclusion: These results emphasized the needs of tailored obesity-preventive management for the community-dwelling patients with chronic mental illness, topically focusing on the administration of atypical antipsychotic medication, duration of illness, and dietary habits.

  • Feeding habits of Hippocampus mohnikei (4.1~10.4 cm SL) collected from an eelgrass bed in Dongdae Bay, Korea were studied. H. mohnikei was a carnivore fish which consumed mainly gammarid amphipods. Its diets also included a small amount of caprellid amphipods, tanaids, copepods, mysids, and eelgrass. Gammarid amphipods were the most important prey organisms to the diet of all size classes of H. mohnikei despite smaller H. mohnikei (<4.5 cm SL) fed copepods. H. mohnikei fed on larger sizes of prey as their size increased. The dietary breadth of H. mohnikei were decreased with increasing their size.

  • The feeding habits of Boleophthalmus pectinirostris were studied using 198 specimens collected monthly from April 2014 to March 2015 in the intertidal zone of Beolgyo, Korea. The size of B. pectinirostris ranged from 6.5 to 18.7 cm in total length (TL, cm). B. pectinirostris was herbivore that consumes mainly centric and pennate diatoms. Its diets also included small quantities of Prorocentrum dinoflagellates. and nematods. B. pectinirostris predominantly consumed diatoms (mainly Pleurosigma spp., Navicula spp., Nitzschia spp., Gyrosigma spp.) in all fish size classes, and all months, and thus there were no significant diet changes in relation to size and month.

  • The feeding habits of Hoplobrotula armata were studied using 269 specimens collected in the coastal waters of Geomun-do, Korea. The size of the specimens ranged from 5.6-56.8 cm in total length (TL). H. armata is a canivore that consumes mainly teleosts and decapods (shrimp, crabs and hermit crabs). Its diet also includes gammarid amphipods, cephalopods, polychaetes and copepods. Smaller individuals (<20 cm TL) fed mainly on fish, shrimp and crabs. The proportion of shrimp and crabs decreased as body size increased, whereas the consumption of fish gradually increased. Fish accounted for almost the entire stomach contents of individuals (larger than 40 cm TL).
