  • Dental implants have been developed for enhancement of osseointegration. Biocompatibility, bone affinity and surface characteristics of dental implants are very important factors for osseointegration. The aim of the present study was to determine the cytotoxicity and the bone affinity of titanium phosphide(Ti-P) implant material. The Ti-P surface was obtained by vacuum sintering of titanium within compacted hydroxyapatite powder. The composition and the chemical change of the surface were determined by Auger electron spectroscopy. The in vitro cytotoxicity was evaluated by the viability of the bone cells and macrophages obtained from chicken embryo and rat,s peritonium, respectively. For the comparative evaluation, 316L stainless steel, commercially pure titanium and Ti-P materials, prepared in size of 1O.0mm in diameter and 5.0mm in height, were immersed separately in bone cells and macrophages for 10 days. For the evaluation of the in vivo bone affinity, 316L stainless steel, commercially pure titanium and Ti-P materials, prepared in size of 5.0mm in diameter and 10.0mm in length, were implanted after drilling in diameter 5.5mm in femurs of 2 dogs weighing 10Kg more or less. Six weeks after implantation the specimens were prepared for histopathological examination and were observed under light microscope. In comparison of in vitro bone cell viability, Ti-P and commercially pure titanium groups were not significantly different from control group (p>O.1), but 316L stainless steel group was significantly lower than control group(p<0.05). There was no statistical difference in the viability of macrophages between 3 different groups and control group(p>O.l). In comparison of in vivo study, 316L stainless steel and commercially pure titanium showed fibrous encapsulation, but Ti-P showed remarkable new bone formation without any fibrous tissue. The results demonstrate that Ti-P has favorable biocompatibility and bone affinity, and suggest that dental implants with Ti-P surface may enhance osseointegration.

  • This study was carried out to investigate the labor saving cultivation of C. auriculatum, which has much bigger root than local variety C. wilfordii, and tested three nonsupporting methods, i.e., untreated control, top pinching, and cutting of branch-top compared with I type stake. Top growth was more vigorous in staking cultivation than in nonsupporting cultivations. Among nonsupporting methods, main vine length and total length of main vines per plant were increased in order of untreated control > top pinching > cutting of branch-top, while the opposite is true to diameter of main vein. Number of leaves per plant was lower, but leaf length and leaf width were higher in cutting of branch-top than in other nonsupporting methods. Number of branched root and diameter of main root were bigger in cutting of branch-top and in staking cultivation, while length of main root and diameter of branched root were greater in staking cultivation and in top pinching than in other treatments. Although yield of marketable root per 10a was $17.9{\sim}22.6%$ lower, income was $8%{\sim}17%$ higher in nonsupporting methods than in staking cultivation by cost saving to staking installation. Among nonsupporting methods, yield of marketable root and income were 6% and 8% higher in cutting of branch-top than in untreated control, respectively.

  • The precision aerial application of small farms, such as paddy, upland and orchard fields using agricultural unmanned helicopters became a new paradigm. The objective of this study was to evaluate the performance of a GPS module and algorithm, controlling drift of agricultural helicopter by the crosswind and maintaining the position for emergency landing. Purpose of the drift control, of which an algorithm works while hovering is related with the emergency sequence that coping with abnormal conditions of rotorcraft system. However, the inertial attitude control cannot detect a drifting motion of fuselage moving at the constant velocity, thus the crosswind takes the helicopter away from the landing position. Performance of the drift control module, based on the GPS that a hovering position did not deviate within 5m in diameter, were tested and evaluated. Initially, the reaction against a disturbing gust wind was sensitive, soon the helicopter maintained its locking position and azimuth within 5m in diameter. It was, however, difficult for the helicopter to recognize the swaying and nodding, the some deviation was expected due to the discrepancy characteristics of the GPS signal. The performance of the drift control proved the effectiveness of the module to maintain the position against an unintended drift during the emergency landing or hovering.

  • Wooden model erosion control dam was made with pitch pine, of which the strength properties was evaluated. Wooden model erosion control dam was made with diameter 90 mm of pitch pine round posts treated with CUAZ-2 (Copper Azole), changing joint in three different types. In each type, erosion control dam was made in nine floor (cross-bar of five floors and vertical-bar of four floors), of which the hight was 790 mm. And then strength properties were investigated through horizontal loading test and impact strength test, and the deformation of structure through image processing (AICON 3D DPA-PRO system). In horizontal loading test of wooden model erosion control dam using round post of diameter 90 mm, whether there was stone or not did not affect strength much when using self drill screw, but strength was decreased by 23%. In monolithic type of erosion control dam using screw bar, strength was increased by 1.5 times and deformation was decreased when filling with stone. When reinforcing with screw bar that ring is connected to self drill screw, strength was increased by 4.8 times. In impact strength test of wooden model erosion control dam made with round post of diameter 90 mm, the erosion control dam connected with self drilling screw not filling with stone was totally destroyed by the 1st impact, and the erosion control dam using screw bar was ruptured at cross-bar at which 779 kgf of impact was loaded in the 1st impact. In the 2nd impact, the base parts were ruptured, and reaction force was decreased to 545 kgf. In the 3rd impact, whole base parts were destroyed, and reaction force was decreased to 263 kgf.

  • Climate change will affect the physiological traits and growth of forest trees. This study was conducted to investigate the effects of an experimental warming on growth and physiological characteristics of Pinus densiflora S. et Z. seedlings. One-year-old P. densiflora seedlings were planted in control and warmed plots in April 2010. The air temperature of warmed plots was increased by $3^{\circ}C$ using infrared lamps from November 2010. We measured shoot height, root collar diameter, above and below ground biomass, chlorophyll contents and leaf nitrogen concentration from March 2011 to March 2013. Seedling height and root collar diameter showed no significant difference between warmed and control plots except for root collar diameter measured in June 2012. Seedling leaf biomass was lower in the warmed ($23.94{\pm}2.10g$) than in the control ($26.08{\pm}1.72g$) plots in 2013. Shoot to root ratio (S/R ratio) was lower in the warmed ($1.09{\pm}0.07$) than in the control ($1.31{\pm}0.10$) plots in 2013. Leaf nitrogen concentrations and chlorophyll contents were not significantly different between warmed and control plots except for leaf nitrogen concentration in 2011. Leaf C/N ratio was increased in 2012 under the warming treatment. Low growth and S/R ratio in warmed plots might be related to the higher temperature and water stress. In the future, the below-ground carbon allocation of P. densiflora might be increased by global warming due to temperature and water stress.

  • Chlorination inhibition on the organic removal activity of activated sludge microorganism was investigated in this study. It is well known that chlorination improves the settleability of filamentous bulking sludge through the selective impediment of filamentous microorganisms. However, it is based on the declination of effluent water quality after actual chlorination in dairy wastewater treatment plant. In case of the activated sludge which was exposed in the suggested concentration of chlorine $7.5\;mgCl_2/gVSS/day$ for the filamentous bulking control, decrease of organic uptake rate of $4.9\~24.0\%$, and dentrification rate of $24.8\~30.3\%$ ware shown in comparison to the control group which was not reacted with chlorine. As a result of comparing floc size of activated sludge microorganism, the average of floc diameter in the chlorine exposed group was $150\;{\mu}m$, which displays $25\%$ decrease compared with the control group.

  • A passive control of interaction of condensation shock wave / boundary layer for reducing the strength of condensation shock was conducted experimentally in a 2.5 * 8 cm$^{2}$ indraft type supersonic wind tunnel. The effects of following factors on passive control were investigated: 1) the thickness of porous wall, 2) the diameter of porous hole, and 3) the orientation of porous hole. On the other hand, the location of nonequilibrium condensation region and condensation shock wave was controlled by regulation of the stagnation conditions. Surface static pressure measurements as well as Schlieren observations of the flow field were obtained, and their effects were compared with the results the cases of without passive control. It was found that thinner porous wall, smaller porous hole and FFH orientation for the same cavity size and porosity of 12% are more favourable than the cases of its opposite.

  • Micro-hole drilling (holes less than 0.5 mm in diameter with aspect ratio larger than 10) is recently having more attention in a wide spectrum of precision production industries. Alternative methods such as EDM. laser drilling, etc. can sometimes replace the mechanical micro-hole drilling but are not acceptable in PCB manufacture because of the inferior hole quality and accuracy. The major difficulties in micro-hole drilling are related to small signal to noise ratios, wandering motions of the inlet stage, high aspect ratios, high temperatures and so forth. Of all the difficulties. the most undesirable one is the increase of drilling force as the drill proceeds deeper into the hole. This is caused mainly from the chip effects. Peck-drilling is thus widely used for deep hole drilling despite that it suffers from low productivity. In the paper, a method of cutting force regulation is proposed to achieve continuous drilling. A PD and a sliding mode control algorithms were implemented through controlling the spindle rotating frequency. Experimental results show that the sliding mode control reduces the nominal cutting force and the variation of the cutting force better than the PD control. The advantages of the regulation, such as increase of drill life, fast stabilization of a wandering motion, and the precise positioning of the hole are verified in experiment.

  • Purpose: A lab-scale timber carriage using a servo motor system was built. When two motors move a carriage, wire tension is changed according to the different line speeds caused by a wire drum's changing diameter, leading to inappropriate traveling characteristics of the carriage. In order to overcome this problem, PID Control was used to control the motor speed. Methods: Ziegler-Nichols method was used to determine PID gains. Results: The initial PID gains were 1.8, 0.025, and 0.006, respectively, and optimal gains of 1.4 and 0.010 for P and I gain were obtained experimentally. Conclusions: The results showed that constant wire tension could be maintained by controlling the speed of the motor using PI control. Overshoot occurred at initial motor operation due to vibration and elasticity of the wire itself.

  • In the design of passive and active boring bars, the structural dimensions and shape of the vibration control boring bar are modified depending on the diameter and depth of the workpiece, which changes the dynamic behavior. Thus, the natural frequency, effective mass, and stiffness for the main structure of a tube-type boring bar need to be reset for each vibration control case. However, commercial finite element method (FEM) software and experimental modal analysis are mostly used at present despite being too time-consuming. To overcome the weaknesses of the two methods currently used for vibration control, we realized a graphical user interface (GUI) program for the modal analysis of a modified tube-type damping structure. The analysis results with the GUI program were compared to those with commercial FEM software in order to confirm the effectiveness of the former.
