  • Reading education has been recognized as being important area in the education. But it has many limitations to achieve education effects, because it is very difficult to process in reality. In these days, traditional education methodology needs to be changed for the development of computer science and network communications. It is also applied at the area of reading education. To achieve educational goal in reading education, students must be able to interchange their views without restrictions of time and space. Through this circumstances, they can improve logical thinking and discussion ability. Therefore we need the reading education system which supports reading actions as well as reading instruction. In this paper, a web based reading education system is designed and implemented to improve logical thinking and discussion ability.

  • Korean children reading Hangul was studied in children between 2 and 5 years of age. Subjects were 400 young children in each age group from kindergartens or day care centers in 6 cities of Jeon-buk Province. Teachers used a checklist based on Lee, Cha-Suk(2003) to assess children's reading ability. Data were analyzed by frequency, percentage, and $x^2$ using SPSS 10.0 program. Results showed age differences in young children's reading of Hangul. Developmental levels consisted of looking at pictures because of absence of linguistic awareness about words, skipping pages of text without pictures, pronouncing phonemes, being aware of phonemes and of the difference between pictures and print, and knowing that the same phonemes can be applied to different words.

  • Several problems occur in reading education in a elementary school. They are the lack of considering the difference of student's capability and diagnosing their reading ability, the review activity focusing on only text and the discontinuation between school and home. Our system is designed and implemented to support leveled reading education using multimedia technology. We can diagnose the student's reading ability exactly and promptly and introduce suitable books considering their ability, and work the proper review activities with this system. It can help the students to interest their reading.

  • Speech-print mapping awareness is defined as the awareness of the principles underpinning how speech sound is matched to print symbols. Chinese is unique in that it follows the one syllable one character mapping principle. The present study examined the predictive power of speech-print mapping awareness in young children's word reading. Seventy-four Hong Kong children from the first and second kindergarten years were tested with phonological awareness, visual skills, syllable-level mapping awareness, and Chinese reading ability at Time 1. Chinese reading abilities were tested again 1 year later. It was found that syllable-level mapping awareness predicted Chinese word reading abilities 12 months later. Further, it seemed that the link of syllable mapping to Chinese reading is particularly significant for beginning readers. The findings suggest that understanding the language-specific speech-print mapping principle is critical for reading acquisition at the early stage of reading development.

  • The purpose of this study is to develop an empathy reading education program and to investigate the effects of elementary school students on empathy ability and emotional intelligence. First, in order to select realistic empathy topics for the empathy reading education program, 10 specialist groups were selected and the focus group interview was conducted as well. 10 expert in the development of the empathy reading education program and 12 experts for selecting the importance of the empathy reading education textbook verified the reliability and validity through Delphi investigation and analysis. Second, in order to verify the effects, the empathy reading education program was studied and conducted on 104 grade 5 students in 'A' elementary school in U city, Gyeonggi-do. In conclusion, the empathy reading education program has a positive effect on the empathy ability and emotional intelligence of elementary school students.

  • Reading disability (dyslexia) refers to an unexpected difficulty with reading for an individual who has the intelligence to be a much better reader. Dyslexia is most commonly caused by a difficulty in phonological processing (the appreciation of the individual sounds of spoken language), which affects the ability of an individual to speak, read, and spell. In this paper, I describe reading disabilities by focusing on their underlying neurobiological mechanisms. Neurobiological studies using functional brain imaging have uncovered the reading pathways, brain regions involved in reading, and neurobiological abnormalities of dyslexia. The reading pathway is in the order of visual analysis, letter recognition, word recognition, meaning (semantics), phonological processing, and speech production. According to functional neuroimaging studies, the important areas of the brain related to reading include the inferior frontal cortex (Broca's area), the midtemporal lobe region, the inferior parieto-temporal area, and the left occipitotemporal region (visual word form area). Interventions for dyslexia can affect reading ability by causing changes in brain function and structure. An accurate diagnosis and timely specialized intervention are important in children with dyslexia. In cases in which national infant development screening tests have been conducted, as in Korea, if language developmental delay and early predictors of dyslexia are detected, careful observation of the progression to dyslexia and early intervention should be made.

  • The purpose of this study is to research the concepts of reading ability and debate ability, and the components of both abilities and to make the performance assessment's standards to apply them to the classroom for reading debate in the school libraries. For doing this, I studied the necessity of reading debate, assessment, and the components of reading/debate abilities. The components of the reading and debate abilities were derived from the theoretical researches and the performance assessment's standards for the reading debate were proposed in the viewpoint of the teacher librarians and classroom teachers in the school libraries in order that the teacher librarians and teachers could apply them to the reading debate classes and assess the performance achievement of the students.

  • The library means to children a place where they find information necessary for them among a variety of knowledge and information to address their intellectual curiosity, which makes their lives wise and mature. There are not enough research materials understanding children's cognitive systems and behaviors in studies of a children's library with this necessity. This study divided and analyzed the behaviors of children, who were users into three types of reading in terms of information processing. First, it observed the types of reading depending on the stage of their cognitive development; Second, it analyzed the patterns of their behaviors through plays; and lastly, it presented the phases of their behaviors depending on the degree of an assistant's intervention. As a result of the study, the sensory system used and the space preferred differed depending on the stage of their cognition; there were differences in the patterns of their behaviors in each age group depending on the type of play; and there were differences in the children's ability of information processing depending on the assistant's ability. It is anticipated that there will be improvements of children's reading ability at the reading room in a better environment if the three types are considered in terms of information processing.

  • For hearing-impaired students, it is known that reading ability is the most important means of communication. In the meanwhile, with recent development of wireless communication technologies, mobile devices are used in various education fields. The purpose of this study is to design and implement a mobile system to improve reading ability of hearing-impaired students. For this purpose, "Question Generation Strategy", known as one of the effective methods for improving reading ability, is adopted to make study contents. Also, 2Bi (Bilingual-Bicultural) Approach Model, an attractive model for improving reading ability of hearing-impaired students, is used. Characteristics of the proposed mobile system are as follows. First, the system is developed to let students learn written language usage through repetition and difference of two organically-related curriculums for hearing-impaired students. Second, study contents are made to increase sentence understanding ability using an activity that is to let students read articles, make questions and answer questions for themselves. Third, the proposed system is designed and implemented to allow students to choose study contents individually anytime anywhere depending on their study levels.

  • In this study, the factors of reading readiness were investigated theoretically and the web-based measurement systems for reading readiness that were developed and operated by the experts or the commercial vendors were examined. On the basis of the results examined, the web-based comprehensive measurement system for reading readiness was proposed. It‘s expected that this study will give libraries with such systems a chance to evaluate their systems and will do much for libraries’ ability to plan their desired system.
