Concrete bridge deck deterioration model using belief networks

  • When deterioration of concrete is observed in a structure, it is highly desirable to determine the cause of such deterioration. Only by understanding the cause can an appropriate repair strategy be implemented to address both the cause and the symptom. In colder climates, bridge deck deterioration is often caused by chlorides from de-icing salts, which penetrate the concrete and depassivate the embedded reinforcement, causing corrosion. Bridge decks can also suffer from other deterioration mechanisms, such as alkali-silica reaction, freeze-thaw, and shrinkage. There is a need for a comprehensive and integrative system to help with the inspection and evaluation of concrete bridge deck deterioration before decisions are made on the best way to repair it. The purpose of this research was to develop a model to help with the diagnosis of concrete bridge deck deterioration that integrates the symptoms observed during an inspection, various deterioration mechanisms, and the probability of their occurrence given the available data. The model displays the diagnosis result as the probability that one of four deterioration mechanisms, namely shrinkage, corrosion of reinforcement, freeze-thaw and alkali-silica reaction, is at fault. Sensitivity analysis was performed to determine which probabilities in the model require refinement. Two case studies are included in this investigation.

전력퓨즈의 열화현상 개선에 관한 연구 (Study of Deterioration Improvement of Power Fuse)

  • 본 논문은 변압기 1차측에 설치된 전력퓨즈의 열화현상을 진단하고 문제점을 해결하고자 한다. 전력퓨즈의 열화현상은 퓨즈 엘리멘트에 반복하여 흐르는 평상전류에 의해 오동작하는 주된 원인이 된다. 따라서 전력퓨즈 전, 후단과 옥내 변전실내 전력기기의 온도변화와 전력퓨즈 열화현상의 관계를 규명하여, 열화현상의 원인을 제거하여 부하설비의 증설을 조사하여 전력퓨즈를 재산정하였다. 변압기는 개선전과 비교하여 평균 $6[^{\circ}C]$가량 하락하였고, 전선로의 온도는 $7{\sim}8[^{\circ}C]$가량 개선되었다. 전력용 콘덴서와 직렬리액터는 실내온도 및 기기동조화와 관계되어 $2{\sim}3[^{\circ}C]$ 높은 상태 유지됨을 알수 있었다. 연구대상인 전력퓨즈 3상간 온도차는 $0.5{\sim}1.0[^{\circ}C]$로 안정화 됨을 보였다. 이에 따라 옥내 변전실내의 환경적인 전력기기간의 온도발생요인을 제거하여 전력퓨즈의 열화 및 온도상승을 억제할 수 있음을 제안 하였다.

  • In Marine Land underground reinforced concrete structures, such as electric box power structure, water and chloride ion penetrated into concrete through the cracks of concrete and its permeable property, cause the corrosion of reinforcing steel bar, which accelerates the expansive cracks and deterioration of concrete. The purpose of this paper is to evaluate on deterioration of durability concrete through instrumental analysis such as schmidt hammer and carbonation, chloride content. Under the reclaimed marine land, the main cause of deterioration of concrete structures is the steel corrosion due to the penetration of chlorides and the deterioration of outer concrete itself by chemical attack.

  • The purpose of this study is to develop Deterioration Diagnosis System for the Reinforced Concrete Structure which can be used preliminary in determining the factors causing deterioration by simple inspection and mapping of the indicators of deterioration. Total 29 items compromising material, structural and constructional factors causing deterioration were considered in this system. Also the indicators of deterioration were subdivided into 54 items such as concrete crack pattern and steel corrosion etc. Each indicator of deterioration was quantatified by allocating and giving grade to each item which has extra weight according to its conscquence. Satisfactory results were obtatined by applying this Diagnosis system to the indicators of deterioration in ref. [3]. Further research was required on the indicators of deterioration in construction site to enhance the field applicability of this system.

  • Treeing deterioration which is one of the main cause of breakdown in insulating materials is affected by temperature, applied voltage and frequency. In this study, GN was introduced to improve impact strength of DGEBA/MDA system and the temperature dependence of AC treeing deterioration in this system was investigated. Dielectric breakdown strength decreased with the increment of temperature. As temperature increased, the growth rate of tree Increased.

  • It have been announced that concrete subjected to freezing and thawing cause deterioration by expanded inside water and contracted at thawing. However, this study descrebe the deterioration mechanism of concrete by freezing and thawing test. Embeded strain gauges were used to measure the inside restrict strain due to the temperature differenct inside and outside the concrete test specimens. Test results showed that using the air entrained admixture and expanded poly-styrene was developed durability of concrete by decreasing inside retrict strain ratio.

  • This study dealt with a self-propelled spinach harvester, which is capable of carrying out sequential harvesting work. This study aimed to find the cause of the harvester's occasional performance deterioration, which occurs in the process of simplifying the hydraulic circuit, using a multi-domain analysis model. The study was carried out in the following manner. First, a hydraulic system analysis model, which combines linear motion, rotary motion, hydrodynamic behavior, and an electrical signal, was developed through SimulationX software, specialized in multi-domain analysis. Second, a scenario for single behavior and coupled behavior was set out on an actuator basis. Third, the flow rate of the hydraulic system, which is not required for the movement of the actuator, was quantitatively analyzed. The results showed that a change in oil temperature was the cause of the harvester's occasional performance deterioration. And the higher the oil temperature, the more serious the performance deterioration, especially as the number of actuators operated simultaneously was small.

  • Concrete structures have been damaged by salt, carbonization, freezing and thawing and the others. Therefore, it is needed to protect durability and performance according to the appropriate materials and methods in the concrete structures. In general, several types of polymer and silicate are used as protecting deterioration agents of concrete structures, but these agents have many problems because of low durability and properties. In this study, It developed the deterioration restraining agent using polycondensed silicate and monomer that can block a deterioration cause such as $CO_2$ gas, salt and water from the outside and enhance waterproofing ability by reinforcing the concrete surface when applying it to concrete structures. Also, it developed the systems for improving concrete performance using a deterioration restraining agent.

  • The latest concrete has showed that the deterioration of durability has been increased by the damage from salt, carbonation, freezing & thawing and the others.   • This paper divides the factors of an accident into two parts, that are electrical deterioration and thermal deterioration, to analyze a characteristic of the factor of an accident which can break out in the capacitor of metal vaporized polypropylene film. For the purpose of creating capacitor which is caused by electric deterioration, we applied DC overvoltage, induced self-healing and breakdown from element. We applied gradual heat to get an element which is cause by thermal deterioration. The chemical structure of the shape and surface is analyzed by thermogravimetric analyzer (TGA), Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM) and Fourier Transform Infrared Spectrometer(FT-IR). As a result, the peak of methylene group came out, in case of electrical deterioration, as observing the self-healing point. However, the peak is disappeared in the heat treated element by 500[$^{\circ}C$], and the peak of carbonyl group which has C=O came out in case of thermal deterioration.
