  • As beaches throughout Korea have suffered great losses of sand due to artificial developments and meteorological phenomena, particularly typhoons, it is necessary to monitor beaches that are prone to erosion continuously, establish and enforce a comprehensive plan to attack coastal erosion with the object of the long-term management. However, debates and temporary measures, not based on accurate coastal zone surveys and analyses, have been established up to now. Therefore, with Haeundae sand beach as a case study, we proposed methods to collect accurate spatial data of the coastline and the sand beach through GPS survey. And we detected and analyzed topographic changes resulting from Typhoon Nabi quantitatively and qualitatively, by using GIS technique. Results showed a mean elevation of 1.95 m, a total area of 53,441 $m^2$, and a total volume of 104,639 $m^3$ after Typhoon Nabi. Mean elevation rose 0.06 m between the pre- and the post-typhoon surveys by a protective shore wall. However, strong winds and north-northeast surges brought by the typhoon caused erosion of the area and the volume, by 3,096 $m^2$ and 2,320 $m^3$. Accurate spatial databases of coastal zones based on integrated GPS GIS techniques and quantitative and qualitative analyses of topographical changes will help Korea develop systematic and effective countermeasures against coastal erosion.

  • This paper presents a Ku-Band Doppler Radar System to measure respiration and heart rate. It was measured by using simultaneous radar and ECG(Electrocardiogram). Arctangent demodulation without dc offset compensation can be applied to transmitted I/Q(In-phase & Quadrature-phase) signal in order to improve the RMSE(Root Mean Square Error) about 50 %. The power leaked to receiving antenna from the transmitting antenna is always generated because of continuously opening the transceiver of CW(Continuous Wave) Doppler radar. As the output power increase, leakage power has an effect on the SNR(Signal-to-Noise Ratio) of the system. Therefore, in this paper, leakage cancellation technique that adds the signal having the opposite phase of the leakage power to the leakage power was implemented in order to minimize the decline of receiver sensitivity. By applying the leakage cancellation techniques described above, it is possible to measure the heart rate and respiration of the human at a distance of up to 35 m. the heart rate of the measured data at a distance of 35 m accords with the heart rate extracted from the ECG data.

  • This paper suggest a way to detect a specific wanted figure in public places such as subway stations and banks by comparing color face images extracted from the real time CCTV with the face images of designated specific figures. Assuming that the characteristic of the surveillance camera allows the face information in screens to change arbitrarily and to contain information on numerous faces, the accurate detection of the face area was focused. To solve this problem, the normalization work using subsampling with $20{\times}20$ pixels on arbitrary face images, which is based on the Perceptron Neural Network model suggested by R. Rosenblatt, created the effect of recogning the whole face. The optimal linear filter and the histogram shaper technique were employed to minimize the outside interference such as lightings and light. The addition operation of the egg-shaped masks was added to the pre-treatment process to minimize unnecessary work. The images finished with the pre-treatment process were divided into three reception fields and the information on the specific location of eyes, nose, and mouths was determined through the neural network. Furthermore, the precision of results was improved by constructing the three single-set network system with different initial values in a row.

  • In this paper, we present a pen-shaped input device equipped with accelerometers and gyroscopes that measure inertial movements when a user writes on 2 or 3 dimensional space with the pen. The measurements from gyroscope are integrated once to find the attitude of the system and are used to compensate gravitational effect in the accelerations. Further, the compensated accelerations are integrated twice to yield the position of the system, whose basic concept stems from the field of inertial navigation. However, the accuracy of the position measurement significantly deteriorates with time due to the integrations involved in recovering the handwriting trajectory This problem is common in the inertial navigation system and is usually solved by the periodic or aperiodic calibration of the system with external reference sources or other information in the filed of inertial navigation. In the presented paper, the calibration of the position or velocity is performed on-line and off-line. In the on-line calibration stage, the complementary filter technique is used, where a Kalman filter plays an important role. In the off-line calibration stage, the constant component of the resultant navigational error of the system is removed using the velocity information and motion detection algorithm. The effectiveness and feasibility of the presented system is shown through the experimental results.

  • In this paper, the Doppler phase error due to the relative velocity between a satellite and the earth station in communications using a low earth orbit mobile satellite is detected. The performance of BPSK system in the presence of Rician fading channel environment with Doppler phase error, inter- ference and noise is compared with that of the system disturbed by Doppler phase error and noise only, And adopted coding techniques are Hamming, BCH, RS and convolution codes. The expression of error rate performance of BPSK system is derived as the type of complementary error function. The main conclusion that can be drawn from this analysis is that Rician fading channel environment with Do- ppler phase error and interference, noise effect yields severe performance degradation then Doppler phase error and noise effect in satellite communication channel. The conclusion can be drawn from this analysis is that using coding technique then noncoding. And using the numerical calculation, we give a quantitative insight how much the satellite communication channel parameters degrade the system per- formance. Furthermore it is shown that an appropriate transmission power control for the performance enhancement is beneficial to the new satellite communication system planning.

  • Purpose: This study assessed the feasibility of near-infrared (NIR) imaging with indocyanine green (ICG) in investigating the completeness of laparoscopic lymph node (LN) dissection for gastric cancer. Materials and Methods: Patients scheduled for laparoscopic gastrectomy for treating gastric cancer were enrolled in the study. After intraoperative submucosal ICG injection (0.05 mg/mL), LN dissection was performed under conventional laparoscopic light. After dissection, the LN stations of interest were examined under the NIR mode to locate any extra ICG-stained (E) tissues, which were excised and sent for pathologic confirmation. This technique was tested in 2 steps: infra-pyloric LN dissection (step 1) and review of all stations after proper radical node dissection (step 2). Results: In step 1, 15 patients who underwent laparoscopic pylorus-preserving gastrectomy (LPPG) and 15 patients who underwent laparoscopic distal gastrectomy (LDG) were examined. Seven and 2 E-tissues were obtained during LPPG and LDG, respectively. From the retrieved E-tissues, 1 and 0 tissue obtained during LPPG and LDG, respectively, was confirmed as LN. In step 2, 20 patients were enrolled (13 D1+ dissection and 7 D2 dissection). Six E-tissues were retrieved from 5 patients, and 1 tissue was confirmed as LN in the pathologic review. Overall, 15 E-tissues were detected and removed, and 2 tissues were confirmed as LNs in the pathologic review. Both nodes were from LN station #6, with 1 case each in the LDG and LPPG groups. Conclusions: NIR imaging may provide additional node detection during laparoscopic LN dissection for gastric cancer, especially in the infra-pyloric area.

  • Imaging assessment of prostate cancer is one of the most difficult sections of oncology imaging. Detecting, localizing and staging of the primary prostate cancer by preoperative imaging are still challenging for the radiologist. Magnetic resonance (MR) imaging provides excellent soft tissue contrast and is widely used for solid organ imaging, but results of preoperative imaging of the prostate gland with conventional MR imaging is unsatisfactory. Positron emission tomography and computed tomography (PET/CT) is the cornerstone in oncology imaging, but some limitations prohibit the assessment of primary prostate cancer with PET or PET/CT. Recent studies to overcome these insufficient accuracies of imaging evaluation of primary prostate cancers with advanced MR techniques and PET and PET/CT are reported. In this article, we review the imaging findings of prostate cancer on variable modalities, focused on MR imaging and PET/CT.

  • Many problems in rotating machinery such as aircraft engines, wind turbines and motors are caused by bearing defects. The abnormalities of the bearing can be detected by analyzing signal data such as vibration or noise, proper pre-processing through a few signal processing techniques is required to analyze their frequencies. In this paper, we introduce the condition monitoring method for diagnosing the failure of the rotating machines by analyzing the vibration signal of the bearing. From the collected signal data, the normal states are trained, and then normal or abnormal state data are classified based on the trained normal state. For preprocessing, a Hamming window is applied to eliminate leakage generated in this process, and the cepstrum analysis is performed to obtain the original signal of the signal data, called the formant. From the vibration data of the IMS bearing dataset, we have extracted 6 statistic indicators using the cepstral coefficients and showed that the application of the Mahalanobis distance classifier can monitor the bearing status and detect the failure in advance.

  • The translation and the rotation of camera occur global motion which affects all over the frame in video sequence. With the video sequences containing global motion, it is practically impossible to extract exact video objects and to calculate genuine object motions. Therefore, high compression ratio cannot be achieved due to the large motion vectors. This problem can be solved when the global motion compensated frames are used. The existing camera motion estimation methods for global motion compensation have a large amount of computations in common. In this paper, we propose a simple global motion estimation algorithm that consists of linear equations without any repetition. The algorithm uses information .of symmetric points in the frame of the video sequence. The discriminant conditions to distinguish regions belonging to distant view from foreground in the frame are presented. Only for the distant view satisfying the discriminant conditions, the linear equations for the panning, tilting, and zooming parameters are applied. From the experimental results using the MPEG test sequences, we can confirm that the proposed algorithm estimates correct global motion parameters. Moreover the real-time capability of the proposed technique can be applicable to many MPEG-4 and MPEG-7 related areas.
