  • In this study, the shape design optimization of a refrigerator door hinge stopper was performed to reduce the discrepancy in the opening forces of the left and right doors of a double-door refrigerator. A finite element model was constructed and analyzed by quasi-static analyses to evaluate the structural performance of the door hinge stopper. The reaction moment calculated at the hinge axis was used as a measure of the door opening and closing forces. The design objective is to increase the door opening force by 50% while maintaining the door closing force and the maximum stress calculated in the body of the hinge stopper at the current level. A new design concept with a contacting slot was proposed to decouple the door closing and opening forces. Shape optimization was performed to determine the dimensions of the new design of the hinge stopper, and the rib pattern was determined by topological optimization to further increase the door opening force. It was observed that the new design met all design requirements.

  • The purpose of this study was to analyse the magnitude and distribution of stresses using a Photoelastic model from and distal - extension removable partial dentures With four designed indirect retainers. The designs of the indirect retainers were as follows : Design No. 1 : Aker's clasp on 1st bicuspid with no indirect retainer. Design No. 2 : Aker's clasp on 1st bicuspid with indirect retainer on canine. Design No. 3 : Extension of the reciprocal arm of Aker's clasp toward incisal rest on canine. Design No. 4 : Connection with the indirect retainer as in No. 2 and extension of reciprocal arm of Aker' s clasp. A photoelastic model was made of the epoxy resin(PL - 1) and hardner(PLH - 1) and coated with plastic cement -1(PC -1) at the lingual surface of the epoxy model and set with chrome - cobalt partial dentures. A unilateral vertical load of 10kg to the right 1st molar and a vertical load of 10kg to the middle portion of the metal bar crossing both the 1st molars of the right and left, were applied. With the use of specially designed jig, fixture; loading device and the reflective circular polariscope, we obtained the following results : 1. When the unilateral vertical load and the vertical load of the middle portion of the metal bar were applied, design No. 2, 3 and 4 exhibited the higher stress concentration at the root apices and their surrounding tissues of the primary and secondary abutment teeth. 2. When the unilateral vertical load applied to design No. 2,3 and 4 the root apices of the primary and secondary abutment teeth and their surrounding tissues and the nonloaded side of edentulous area exhibited and even stress distribution. 3. When the vertical load was applied, the stress concentration fringe in the primary and secondary abutment teeth was in the order of No. 1,4,2 and 3. 4. No.1 and 4 exhibited the higher distrorted stress concentration at the primary teeth and the edentulous area in the nonloaded side. 5. No.2 design reduced the stresses at the apices of the alveoli of the primary abutment teeth bilaterally as well as on the crest of the residual ridge on the nonloaded side. 6. No. 2 design exhibited the most favorable stress distribution.

  • This paper designs observers for matrix second-order linear systems on the basis of generalized eigenstructure assignment via unified parametric approach. It is shown that the problem is closely related with a type of so-called generalized matrix second-order Sylvester matrix equations. Through establishing two general parametric solutions to this type of matrix equations, two unified complete parametric methods for the proposed observer design problem are presented. Both methods give simple complete parametric expressions for the observer gain matrices. The first one mainly depends on a series of singular value decompositions, and is thus numerically simple and reliable; the second one utilizes the right factorization of the system, and allows eigenvalues of the error system to be set undetermined and sought via certain optimization procedures. A spring-mass system is utilized to show the effect of the proposed approaches.

  • The purpose of this study is to research the Andrea Palladio's villa design, theory and its application influenced on the early frank Lloyd Wright's houses. the results of this study are as follows: (1) The early Frank Loyod Wright's houses composed nine division composition as well as three division compositiov. (2) According to the cross axis masses projected into the right and left. Although houses composed largely three division composition, they came to two extremes composition with two centers. As a result the early houses developed Prairie Houses that the fireplace was placed on the center of space and the symmetrical space arranged around the cross type.

  • Smart Dining Table is an ongoing project in our Interaction Design Lab. It is a table top display designed to facilitate dining process. Smart Dining Table uses touchable interface to interact with users, providing a new, interesting and efficient experience in dining process. In GuangZhou, the south city of China, Yam Cha is a traditional and local way of entertainment in which normally elders gather together with friends or relatives to have tea and snack, and most importantly, to chat. Yam Cha has a long history in China, and Guangzhou has developed its own unique "Yam Cha" culture. In this paper, we discuss about previous research we did on Yam Cha in GuangZhou, and the approach we propose to manage and analyze issues related to dining table to help designing specific version of Smart Dining Table which can fit right into the Yam Cha process and cultural environment.

  • Energy scavenging is a technique that converts ambient energy, for example, vibration and light, to electrical energy in order to supply power to low power electronic devices such as ubiquitous sensors. In this paper, we propose an optimal operation condition of power delivery circuit and design strategy for energy scavenging system in which the generated power is order of microwatt and, consequently, efficient handling of power is critical. We also propose that high data transmission rate is more realistic optimal design objective rather than high energy efficiency. It is shown that disconnection of load from the storage capacitor right after data transmission reduces energy wasting and that optimal value of storage capacitor can be determined at this condition. The feasibility of our propose is proved by experiments and we believe that the proposed design strategy will promote the application of piezoelectric micropower generator to the ubiquitous sensor networks.

  • To be the design method supporting aesthetic ability of human, CAAD system should essentially recognize architectural form in the same way of human. In this study, visual perception process of human was analyzed to search proper computational method performing similar step of perception of it. Through the analysis of visual perception, vision was separated to low-level vision and high-level vision. Edge detection and neural network were selected to model after low-level vision and high-level vision. The 24 images of building, tree and landscape were processed by edge detection and trained by neural network. And 24 new images were used to test trained network. The test shows that trained network gives right perception result toward each images with low error rate. This study is on the meaning of artificial intelligence in design process rather than on the design automation strategy through artificial intelligence.

  • This paper discusses of the problem of direction and orientation of site design of a traditional Korean village. The research focus on how the directional orientation of each houses adapt the direction of the flow of surrounding mountains. The direction of mountains worked as a prime rule which most of the houses( 76.6%) observed the same direction as their own orientation. While the central part of the village followed the direction of mountains more strictly, however the houses on the periphery area tend to be more free from the direction of mountains. This houses of the periphery respect either the direction of the mountain flow right behind the house or faces toward the south.

  • This survey paper presents and overview on eigenstructure assignment (EA) control design methodologies. EA is an excellent control design method which may be used to assign the entire eigenstructure(eigenvalues, and right or left eigenvectors) of a closed-loop linear system via a full state or an output feedback control law. In general, EA is well-sutied for incorporating classical specifications on damping, settling time, and mode or disturbance decoupling into a modern multivariable control framework. The purpose of this paper is to provide an extensive survey on EA control design methods that might serve as an introduction to a study on EA. The fundamental concepts and formulations for understanding EA problems are extensively described. The recently reported results on EA are also presented.
