Keratinophilic fungus (KPF), a type of dermatophytes, is usually present as normal flora on the skin of humans and animals but can produce ring worm-like dermatophytosis by invading the skin in infected individuals. They are distributed worldwide, but their occurrences vary distinctively in accordance with the geographical location and environmental change. Because these fungi grow by degrading keratin, they are abundantly found on the skin, hair, and nails, which are rich in keratin. To investigate the presence of keratinophilic fungi in the soil, we selected a popular beach in South Korea, Haeundae Beach, where numerous people gather each year during the summer holidays. Hundred soil samples were analyzed using the hair-baiting technique, among which, a total of 23 colonies of KPF were identified from 21 soil samples. The identified KPF were Microsporum gypseum (43%), Chrysosporium spp. (35%), Trichophyton ajelloi (13%), and Microsporum cookie (9%). This study confirmed that pathogenic fungi can be found in places crowded by many people. Further research and continuous data collection are needed to confirm the distribution of pathogenic KPF.
Using internal transcribed spacer 1 (ITS1) region ribosomal DNA sequences from 9 strains of Microsporum canis and 5 strains of Microsporum gypseum isolated from dogs and a cat with dermatophytosis, we demonstrated the mutual phylogenetic relationship of these strains. Nucleotide sequence analysis of the ITS 1 gene fragments from the 9 strains of M canis had the 100% nucleotide sequence similarities and the 5 strains of M gypseum also had the 100% nucleotide sequence similarities. The phylogenetic analysis of the nucleotide sequences of the 9 strains of M canis formed a nested cluster with the reference strains of M canis originating from USA, Australia, Japan, and Europe. M canis were genetically distinct from the other reference strains of Microsporum spp, but M distortum, M equinum, and M. ferrugineum were genetically very close to M canis. M gypseum from a cluster in the phylogenetic tree with M canis as an outgroup. The molecular analysis of ITS 1 genes provided the useful information for the identification of these microsporum species and the understanding of their relationship.
There had been no reports of Trichophyton tonsurans infection in Korea yet. We have much chances to import the organism through international travels and exchanges. But we, Korean, have no experiences to observe T. tonsurans. Author tried mycological studies with T. tonsurans isolated in New Orleans, USA. The results are as follows : Gross findings of T. tonsurans showed that fine granular surface with light yellow hue or white color and groving in the central area on the front side and mahogany brown color on the reverse side. On the urease test, various reddish discoloration was noted. Microscopic findings showed that septated hyphae, macroconidia, chlamydoconidia and microcondia. Macroconidia were 3-5 septated, smooth-surfaced, and were found more frequently in the whitish colony. Microconidia were characteristic in their arrangement and shape ; round or oval shaped microconidia laterally to hyphae, some were match-head like terminal swelling. Hair perforation test showed positive results in 16 strains among 19 tested strains. All these findings are similar to T. rubrum and T. menatgrophytes, the most frequent isolates of dermatophytes in Korea. And we have to pay an attention to diffentiate carefully.
This study was undertaken to investigate the activity or the water extract of Polygonum aviculare Linne in vitro. Some of the purely isolated strains or dermatophytes were inoculated on Sabouraud's dextrose agar medium containing different concentrations of the Polygonum extracts and their growth was observed for about two weeks at room temperature. Then we measured the sizes of fungal colony grown in various conditions and compared them with those of Sabouraud's medium as control to determine fungistatic effectiveness of the extract. For additional study, slide cultures on Sabouraud's dextrose medium and Sabouraud's media containing 3ml/10ml extract were performed with Epidermophyton floccosum to observe the growth of hyphae, sporulation and other mycological findings. 1. The growth of Epidermo-phyton floccosum was completely inhibited in the media containing 3ml/l0ml Polygonum extract. 2. Trichophyton rubrum, Trichophyton mentagrophytes and microsporum canis were completely inhibited in several strains of each specimen and a moderate inhibitory effect was observed in all of another strains in the media containing the 3ml/10ml extract. 3. In the slide culture of Epidormophyton floccosum the hypha was thin and more desiccated. The characteristic macroco-nidia formation was not observed on the media containing 3ml/10ml Polygonum extract as compared with those findings of Sabouraud's dextrose control medium.
The present study was conducted to examine the drug susceptibility of 57 strains of Microsporum canis isolated from dogs with dermatitis in Taegu, 1999. Antifungal susceptibility test was performed by the microdilution method, using 7 antifungal drugs as follows: itraconazole(I), terbinafine(T), ketoconazole(K), griseofulvin(G), amphotericin B(A), flucytosine(5-Fc)(F), tolnaftate(To). All tester strains of M canis were highly susceptible to T, I, K and To(geometric mean $MICs{\leq}0.007{\sim}0.155{\mu}g/ml$), while those were lowly susceptible to G, A and F(geometric mean MICs $0.285{\sim}26.430{\mu}g/ml$).

This study examined the dermatophytes of calves aged between 6 and 12 months in the Hanwoo calf auction market. Moreover, the research analyzed how dermatophytosis affected the auction price of Hanwoo calves based on their sex and age. The incidence rate of dermatophytosis was found to be 85 cases out of 1,955 calves (4.3%). The major location of dermatophytosis lesions were in the head region. Specifically, the highest prevalence was observed in the forehead (42.4%), followed by the eyes (30.1%), and the ears (18.8%). The auction prices of Hanwoo calves were observed that the average price for normal calves was 2,936,428 won, while calves with dermatophytosis were sold at 2,767,059 won. Comparing auction prices according to gender and age, it was observed that male calves and calves aged between 8 and 12 months had significantly lower auction prices compared to normal calves. The results provided valuable insights into the current situation of dermatophytosis in Hanwoo calves. Moreover, analyzing the impact of dermatophytosis on the auction prices of these calves, it has generated essential data that can serve as a foundation for implementing and enhancing ongoing management and prevention measures for dermatophytosis in cattle.

The present study was conducted to evaluate the application of Chamaecyparis obtusa and to investigate potential utilization of essential oil from C. obtusa as plant-based medicine. The antifungal activity of essential oil from leaves and twigs of C. obtusa (Sieb. Et Zucc) was determined and the major components of active fractions against Microsporum canis (KCTC6591) and Trichophyton mentagrophytes (KCTC6077) were identified by GC/MS analysis. In treatment of essential oil from C. obtusa, the strain M. canis was more resistant than the other, T. mentagrophytes. In the agar diffusion assay, essential oil from C. obtusa inhibited hyphal growth of M. canis and T. mentagrophytes at the concentration of more than 5,000 ppm. The zones named B and C in the TLC assay of essential oil from C. obtusa showed antifungal activities. Among four sub-fractions of n-hexane extract from B and C zones, named as B-1, B-2, C-1 and C-2, the C-2 showed the highest antifungal activity. Instrumental GC/MS analysis for sub-fractions showed that a major component of C-1 was ${\alpha}$-terpineol as terpene alcohol, while C-2 contained sesquiterpenes such as elemol, cedrol and eudesmol.

A dermatophyte is a zoonotic infection that causes infection on the skin, hair, and nails and is transmitted through contact. The species of Microsporum, Trichophyton, and Epidermophyton are the major dermatophytes that infect humans. Tinea capitis is a dermatophyte infection in the scalp, and it may progress to kerion celsi, including severe redness, swelling, and pus formation. Kerion celsi is sometimes misdiagnosed as a bacterial infection or a tumor. Trichophyton verrucosum is a zoophilic dermatophyte that mainly causes infection in cattle. It can be spread to dairy farmers or ranchers who have frequent contact with infected cattle. We report a pediatric case who received scalp tumor excision and a split-thickness skin graft for extensive and severe inflammatory scalp tumors that occurred after contact with cattle with ringworm. Finally, the patient was diagnosed with kerion celsi caused by T. verrucosum infection. This was based on the patient's medical history, clinical manifestations, and histopathologic findings.
Various susceptibility tests have been used to determine minimal inhibition concentration(MIC) of dermatophytes. They have limitations to apply practically because they need long time to determine MIC. Authors examined MIC of T. rubrum to ketoconazole and itraconazole using 96-well microplate and 24-well macroplate by method of Granade and Artis and tried to check the possibility of this method on clinical application. Nine strains of T. rubrum from patients with dermatophytosis were used. Evaluations of the factors affecting MIC were also tried. The results were as follows. 1. Effect of inoculation density on determination time and MIC : Determination of MIC were possible in 4th days after inoculation at higher inoculation density Caborbance 2.0, 1.0) compared to 6th days at lower inoculation density(absorbance 0.5, 0.25). 2. Effect of incubation temperature on MIC : When incubating at $37^{\circ}C$, MIC were below 0.006-$0.04{\mu}g/ml$ to ketokckonazole and below 0.006-$0.04{\mu}g/ml$ to itraconazole while at $25^{\circ}C$ 0.08-$5.68{\mu}g/ml$ to ketoconazole and 0.006-$0.71{\mu}g/ml$ to itraconazole. Significant reduction of MIC was observed at $37^{\circ}C$ compared to $25^{\circ}C$. 3. Effect of container size on determination time and MIC : When incubating in 96-well microplate and 24-well macroplate, determination of MIC was possible in 4th to 6th days after inoculation in broth-containig 96-well microplate compared to 8th to 12th days in broth-containing 24-well macroplate. But no difference in MIC was observed between different container size. 4. Effect of media on MIC : When using broth as media, MIC were below 0.006-$5.68{\mu}g/ml$ to ketoconazole, below 0.006-$0.36{\mu}g/ml$ to itraconazole in broth-containg 24-well macroplate. When using agar as media, MIC were below 0.006-$5.68{\mu}g/ml$ to ketoconzole, below 0.006-$5.68{\mu}g/ml$ to intraconzole in agar-containing 24-well macroplate. There was slight increase of MIC with agar media compared to broth media. 5. These findings confirm that determination of MIC of dermatophtes by method of Granade and Artis is fast and simple technique for antifungal susceptibility test.
