Reconstruction of calvarial bone defects from congenital anomaly or from bone loss due to traumatic or neoplastic processes remains a significant problem in craniofacial surgery and neurosurgery. To facilitate bone regeneration, there have been many trials such as autologous bone graft or allograft, and the addition of demineralized bone matrix and matrix-derived growth factor. Guided bone regeneration is one of the methods to accelerate bone healing for calvarial bone defects especially in children. Pericranium is one of the most usable structure in bone regeneration. It protects the dura and sinus, and provides mechanical connection between bone fragments. It supplies blood to bone cortex and osteoprogenitor cells and enhances bone regeneration. For maximal effect of pericranium in bone regeneration, authors used pericranium as a flap for covering calvarial defects in surgeries of 11 craniosynostosis patients and achieved satisfactory results: The bone regeneration of original cranial defect in one year after operation was 74.6%(${\pm}8.5%$). This pericranial flap would be made more effectively by individual dissection after subgaleal dissection rather than subperiosteal dissection. In this article, we reviewed the role of pericranium and reported its usefulness as a flap in surgery of craniosynostosis to maximize bone regeneration.
Purpose: The aim of this case report is to present the longitudinal results of sinus grafting using a new demineralized bovine bone material (DBBM) in human cases. Methods: A patient with a resorbed maxilla was treated by maxillary sinus grafting using a new deproteinized bovine bone material. After a healing period of 6.5 months, three implants were placed and restored. The patient was periodically recalled and followed up for 5 years after restoration. Results: Twelve partially edentulous patients (average age, 55.7 years) were followed up. All patients had insufficient residual height in their maxillary posterior area and underwent maxillary sinus graft surgery to increase the height of their maxilla. In all, 27 fixtures were placed in the augmented bone area. On average, 8.6 months later, implants were loaded using provisional or final restorations. The observation period ranged from 27 to 75 months (average, 43.3 months), and the patients did not show any severe resorption of the graft material or any infection during this time. Conclusions: Our results show that the new DBBM is useful for a maxillary sinus graft procedure. Good healing responses as well as reliable results were obtained for an average follow-up period of 43.3 months.

With successful extraction of growth factors and bone morphogenic proteins (BMPs) from mammalian teeth, many researchers have supported development of a bone substitute using tooth-derived substances. Some studies have also expanded the potential use of teeth as a carrier for growth factors and stem cells. A broad overview of the published findings with regard to tooth-derived regenerative tissue engineering technique is outlined. Considering more than 100 published papers, our team has developed the protocols and techniques for processing of bone graft material using extracted teeth. Based on current studies and studies that will be needed in the future, we can anticipate development of scaffolds, homogenous and xenogenous tooth bone grafts, and dental restorative materials using extracted teeth.
An essential fact in the regeneration of new periodontal tissue after periodontal therapy is the reattachment of collagen fibers to the tooth. Two phenomena play a fundamental role in preventing new connective tissue attachment to the exposed root surface ; 1) The apical migration of the junctional epithelium 2) The contamination of cementum by toxic substances, especially endotoxins. Authors have used rat submucosal implantation of root sections to study the connective tissue healing to periodontally diseaed root, previously planed and demineralized with citric acid and tetracycline- HCl. The results were obtained as follows. 1. The connective tissue attachment was increased in tetracycline, citric acid, non disease, scaling and root planing order and inflammatory reaction was seen in the rat teeth, no treatment group. 2. Collagen fiber attachment at the dentin surface was more increased than cementum surface 3. In 2 week of citric acid and tetracycline-HCl specimens, osteoid was seen near the fibrotic band. 4. In the MT view, collagen fiber formation was increased with time and the numerous collagen fiber and connective tissue was more densly attached to the tooth surfaces in the tetracycline-HCl group than the citric acid group.

Experimental studies on heat transfer and solidification of the molten metal pool with overlying coolant with boiling were performed The simulant molten pool material is tin (Sn) with the melting temperature of 232$^{\circ}C$. Demineralized water and R113 are used as the working coolant. This work examines the crust formation and the heat transfer characteristics of the molten metal pool immersed in the boiling coolant. The Nusselt number and the Rayleigh number in the molten metal Pool region of this study are compared between the water coolant case and the R113 coolant case. The experimental results or the water coolant are higher than those for R113. Also, the empirical relationship of the Nusselt number and the Rayleigh number is compared with the literature correlations measure from mercury. The present experimental results are higher than the literature correlations. It is believed that this discrepancy is caused by the effect of heat loss to the environment on the natural convection heat transfer in the molten pool.
The purpose of this study is to examine the influence of 5% tetracycline(Tc) gel on healing of gingival tissue and change of diseased root surface when used with nonsurgical procedure. 7 patients with advanced periodontitis were received thorough scaling and root planning, followed by saline irrigation on 10 randomly selected control teeth and Tc gel application for 5 minutes with specifically designed plastic instrument of 10 test teeth in contralateral side. At 0, 1, 7, 14, and 21 days after treatment, biopsy and extraction were carried out. At day 7, Tc group showed decreased inflammation and delayed proliferation of pocket epithelium in comparison with control group which was continued for all experimental days. Scanning electron microscopic finding revealed demineralized and cleaned root surface with exposed dentinal tubules in Tc gel group. In the present study, clinically successful result is expected with combined use of nonsurgical periodontal therapy and intrapocket application of Tc gel.
Background: In our study, a silver diamine fluoride (SDF) compound for the treatment of dental caries was synthesized to characterize its remineralization activity upon direct application to deciduous teeth. This study aimed to use microscopic computed tomography (microCT) and nanoindentation to evaluate whether SDF composite application could effectively arrest dental caries in five exfoliated primary molars. Methods: Carious teeth were extracted and visually examined using quantitative photofluorescence devices (Qraycam and QraypenTM). After performing microCT, the SDF composite was applied to the teeth according to the manufacturer's instructions. The researchers exchanged and precipitated the irritant saliva once daily for 1 week. The teeth were sectioned longitudinally through the centers of the mesial and distal surfaces, embedded, polished, and measured using nanoindentation. Thereafter, microCT was repeated. Statistical analyses were performed using GraphPad Prism software. Results: Following SDF composite application, a remineralized layer was observed on microCT images, and the hardness increased when measured using nanoindentation. We found that demineralized enamel presented with an increased number of irregular crystals in the deep carious lesion group compared with those in the shallow carious lesion group, resulting in a rougher surface. Conclusion: The SDF composite may be used for remineralization of early caries and cessation of advanced caries in primary molars.

Cherubism is a rare fibro-osseous condition characterized by bilateral expansion of the mandible and maxilla. Due to its rarity, treatment guidelines for cherubism have not been clearly established. Observation without surgical intervention is typically recommended, as cherubism often regresses spontaneously after puberty. However, a surgical intervention may be necessary if aggressive lesions lead to severe complications. In this report, we present a case involving surgical management of cherubism that did not spontaneously regress until early adulthood. An 18-year-old man was diagnosed with cherubism, presenting characteristic upward-looking eyes and a swollen face. He strongly desired surgical management. Gross contouring of the mandible was performed using an osteotome. Subsequently, delicate contouring was performed by bone burring and curettage. The remaining multiple locular bony defects were filled with demineralized bone matrix. No major complications, including infection and hematoma, occurred during the 8-month follow-up period. The facial contour remained stable without the aggravation of cherubism. The patient was satisfied with the cosmetic results. Considering that cherubism is a rare disease globally, with few reported cases in Korea, and that treatment guidelines are not clearly established, we anticipate that the results of this case will contribute to the development of future protocols for treating cherubism.

Purpose: Extensive research is actively ongoing for development of an ideal bone substitute that meets the gold standard. Tooth was selected as a donor site for evaluation of potentials in bone substitutes based on its similar chemical compositions to alveolar bone. Previous studies have evaluated inorganic components of autogenous tooth bone graft material (AutoBT) and osteoconductivity. In continuation from the previous studies, the current study was conducted for analysis of organic components and evaluation of osteoinductivity of AutoBT. Methods: Forty-six extracted teeth were collected from actual patients (Korea Tooth Bank, R&D Institute). Extracted teeth were processed into AutoBT and implanted in dorsal subcutaneous muscular tissues of 15 athymic mice. Biopsy samples were harvested at two, five, and eight weeks. The Bradford assay, sodium dodecyl sulphate polyacrylamide gradient gel, and western blotting were performed for investigation of organic contents of AutoBT. Results: Histology analyses showed signs of new bone formation as early as two weeks. Results of the Bradford assay indicated the existence of noncollagenous proteins (NCP). 0.29% (2.89 mg/g) of proteins were extracted by weight in the root portion of AutoBT; 0.02% (0.029 mg/g) and 1.79% (17.93 mg/g) of proteins were measured by weight in crown and block-form of AutoBT, respectively. However, recombinant human bone morphogenetic protein-2 was not observed in AutoBT. Conclusion: Within the limitation of the current study, AutoBT induced new bone formation by NCP embedded in dentin.
This study is to analyze seven fluoride varnishes remineralizing effects on early carious lesions in the clinical field. While CS, MI, CW, VV, EP, FP and FN were used for permanent teeth, CS, MI, CW and FP were used for primary teeth. The specimens were demineralized for 4 days after forming a $3{\times}3mm^2$ window with nail varnish, applied with varnishes separately, then were stirred in artificial saliva for 1 week. QLF-D analysis of carious lesion size showed that permanent teeth's ${\Delta}F$ value decreased after applying CS(4,64), MI(4.86), CW(4.50), and EP(5.50), while for primary teeth, FP(3.00) and MI(3.00) displayed a remineralizing effect. Thus, MI can be used effectively for preventing caries for both adults and children in the clinical field.
