Probabilistic seismic demand assessment of self-centering concrete frames under mainshock-aftershock excitations

  • This paper investigates the effect of aftershocks on the seismic performance of self-centering (SC) prestressed concrete frames using the probabilistic seismic demand analysis methodology. For this purpose, a 4-story SC concrete frame and a conventional reinforced concrete (RC) frame are designed and numerically analyzed through nonlinear dynamic analyses based on a set of as-recorded mainshock-aftershock seismic sequences. The peak and residual story drifts are selected as the demand parameters. The probabilistic seismic demand models of the SC and RC frames are compared, and the SC frame is found to have less dispersion of peak and residual story drifts. The results of drift demand hazard analyses reveal that the SC frame experiences lower peak story drift hazards and significantly reduced residual story drift hazards than the RC frame when subjected to the mainshocks only or the mainshock-aftershock sequences, which demonstrates the advantages of the SC frame over the RC frame. For both the SC and RC frames, the influence of as-recorded aftershocks on the drift demand hazards is small. It is shown that artificial aftershocks can produce notably increased drift demand hazards of the RC frame, while the incremental effect of artificial aftershocks on the drift demand hazards of the SC frame is much smaller. It is also found that aftershock polarity does not influence the drift demand hazards of both the SC and RC frames.

The Effects of School Characteristics on Private Education Expenditure (사교육비 지출에 영향을 주는 학교 특성의 분석)

  • Using Korea Education Longitudinal Study and administrative school data, this paper analyzes school characteristics that influence the demand for private education. Among other findings, it should be noted that private education expenditure tends to be decreased when student evaluation of teacher effectiveness is high, the average education level of teachers is high, and individualized education is offered through subject-based classroom. These results suggest that the demand for private education could be dropped by a better quality and high effort of teachers, which would be attained through an improved education system for teaching profession and student-oriented teacher evaluation. In addition, ability grouping within school via subject-based classrooms with different levels appears to be helpful to overcome uniformity of school equalization system without inducing an increasing demand for private education.

  • Through the present training condition of Korean teacher librarians and their supply-demand prospects, this paper pointed out problems both of the educational system and of its supply-demand and suggested the solution as well. Particularly, focusing on the educational system of teacher librarians and the present condition of the training organizations, this paper predicted their supply ability in the future and analyzed the demand which is necessary, when applying the standards of Korean Library Association and School Library Promotional Law with the selective situation of teacher librarians. In this way, the problems of supply-demand imbalance were indicated and, as a method for training the proper number which is required for the future demand, the rearrangement of the approval number of a course of study for the teaching profession and the establishment of Library and Information education department in education college were proposed.

A Families's Burden on a Cerebrovascular Accident Patient and the Demand for Nursing Home (뇌혈관질환자 가족의 부담감과 가정간호 요구도)

  • Purpose: This is to find out the correlation between a families burden on a cerebrovascular accident patient and the demand for nursing home. Method: The data was established by using structured questionnaires for 102 nursing families of cerebrovascular accident patient at three university hospitals. Result: 1) The total burden was showed to be at 3.21, which was some what higher than average. Total average of demand for nursing home was at 3.30, which was higher than average. 2) This showed static correlations between the economic, social, physical dependent and psychological burden, and demand for nursing home. The result represents that the higher burden showed a significantly positive correlation to the higher demand for nursing home. Conclusion: If a systemic support of nursing home is prepared the differentiated nursing home matched perfectly on each burden, the burden on a family of the patient can be decreased effectively.

Beyond Accuracy and Speed: Task Demands and Mathematical Performance

  • It is an important issue to explore classroom environments which are conducive to developing students' mathematical performance. This study explores the effects of different classroom environments (solution-demand and corresponding-time setting) on mathematical performances. Fourteen and eighteen prospective teachers were required to prove a task under different conditions respectively: a) Cognitive demand of multiple-solution corresponding time of three hours, and b) Cognitive demand of a right solution corresponding time of 20 minutes. We used SOLO as the assessment tool for mathematical performance from quality perspective. Significant differences were found in the quantity and quality of mathematical performance. The regular environment focusing on speed and accuracy were found to be directly linked to low levels of performance. The findings above provide implications to the cognitive benefits of multiple-solution demand and corresponding time setting.

  • With the types and targets of cyber attacks expanding and with personal information leaks increasing, the quantitative demand for information security specialists has increased. The base for training the workforce has expanded accordingly, but joblessness and job-seeking still coexist. To resolve the gap between labor demand and supply, education and training systems that can supply demand quickly are needed. It takes a considerable amount of time for information security education and new manpower supply through universities and graduate schools to be reflected in the market. However, if information security retraining is carried out in terms of career development of information security and related workforce, the problem of lack of experts could be solved in a relatively short period. This paper investigates and analyzes the information security work of the information security workforce, the degree of skill level, the need for retraining, and the workplace migration experience; it also discusses the direction of career development retraining.

Revitalization Plan for IT Education according to Analysis of Demand by Students and Parents (학생 및 학부모 수요 분석에 따른 정보교육 활성화 방안)

  • In this paper, a revitalization plan for IT education was studied. Currently, IT industry is the most important field of the export industry in korea. But IT education in korea has been neglected. To grasp the demand of students and parents for IT education, a survey was conducted. A majority of students and parents agree with opinion that should be strengthened IT education at school. Also, a majority of students and parents agree with a plan to set up special purpose high school for IT education. In this paper, a revitalization plan for IT education is proposed according to result of survey. It is expected to help the breeding gifted young man for IT.

Determinants of Demand for Residential Settlement in Rural Society Based on Depopulation Classification (과소화유형에 따른 농촌사회 정주수요 분석)

  • The objective of this research was to analyze the determinants of demand for residential settlements in rural societies. A significant aspect of the demand analysis was to consider depopulation classification as a moderating variable with a view to its role as an essential dividing factor of socioeconomic characteristics and physical environments of the areas of concern. The data collection for analysis was divided according to types of depopulation into the three categories of less developed, stagnated, and developed areas. For the cause and effect analysis between the residential demand and factors of settlement, the ordered probit model was applied. Significant determinants of settlement demand unfolded according to depopulation types. In the case of less developed areas, residential demand was affected significantly by the factors of daily life convenience and public facilities. Key settlement demand determinants of stagnated regions included the aspects of basic natural environment, daily life convenience and education. Meanwhile, key settlement demand determinants for developed areas included education and agriculture economic aspects. The importance-performance analysis was also applied to a set of settlement characteristics of rural communities to figure out the settlement factors requiring urgent endeavor to improve.

Differences of Perception Between Students and Teachers to the Key Competencies Education in the University through A College Practice (대학의 직업기초능력 교육에 대한 교수와 학생의 인식 차이: A대학 사례를 중심으로)

  • The expectation and importance for the key competencies education in the university have been greater. Although there have been many various efforts of the university for its social accountability that it should cultivate the qualified person company requires, there is a bit gap between the university education and social demand. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to investigate the perception and demand of students and teachers to the key competencies and then offer a help to develop and operate strategies with which university education can be prepared for the demand of teachers, students and society. In this study, questionnaires on the perception and demand to the key competencies education were developed and responded by 475 students and 58 professors as a subject of this study. The results were analysed using multiple response frequency analysis, cross analysis and t-test. Also the statistical level of significance was set at p<.05 by using SPSS 12.0 for Windows. The results suggested that there were significant differences between the perception and demand of teachers and students to the key competencies education, particularly to the items questioning the degree of difficulty in preparing for future employment, the most important resource from which they can obtain aids, the degree of efforts they put for the key competencies development and employment, and the main factors for the key competencies development and employment. We can expect to offer an implication for the university education based on perception and demand of teachers and students to the key competencies.

The Study of the Recognition of Sexual Roles and the Demand of Sexual Education by the Korean Junior Students and their Parents (한국 청소년과 학부모의 성역할인지와 성교육요구에 관한 조사연구)

  • The study was attempted to survey the recognition of sexual roles and the demand of sexual education. The period was May 1st through June 15th, 1998 and the subjects were 377 junior students and 251 parents in Pusan. This study was based on questionnaire which focused on the Han and Lee's inquiry. The analysis of collected data was executed by using SPSS/PC+. The results were as follows : (1) The average point as to the 12 items of recognition of sexual roles regarding the occupational functions by the boys was 2.92 which was higher than that of the girls(1.85). The average point as to the 14 items of recognition of sexual roles regarding the attitudes by the boys was 2.91 which was higher than that of the girls(2.13). The average point as to the 14 items of recognition of sexual roles regarding the abilities by the boys was 2.93 which was higher than that of the girls(1.96). The point as to the item of androgyny among the demand of sexual education by the girls was 3.17 which is higher than that of the boys(2.93). (2) The parents showed the higher recognition toward androcentrism than the students and the parents showed the higher demand of the overall sexual education than the students. (3) 15.7% of the students was engaged in the masturbation. The students who answered that their parents had known the masturbation by their children were 16.9%. The 59 masturbaters consisted of the boys(91.5%) and the girls(8.5%), and that showed significant difference. (4) The opinions about the well-qualified teacher of sexual education by the subjects were studied as under: 16.7% of the parents supported the nurse-teacher, meanwhile 24.7% of the students supported the nurse-teacher.
