  • The vortex flow and aerodynamic load characteristics of a $65^{\circ}$ sweep delta wing with the leading edge extension in sideslip condition is investigated experimentally. The freestream velocity is 40 m/sec, which corresponds to a Reynolds number per meter of $1.76{\times}10^6$ based on the wing root chord. The angles of attack range from $12^{\circ}$ to $28^{\circ}$, and the sideslip angles treated are $0^{\circ}$ , $-10^{\circ}$, $-20^{\circ}$. The LEX vortex of the leeward side. The LEX and wing vortics coalesce to to become a concentrated strong vortex or to break down at down at downstream position. Due to the interation of the LEX and wing vortices, a high suction pressure is maintained on the windward wing surface, and a low suction pressure is formed on the leeward wing surface

  • The vortical flow of a 65-deg flat plate delta wing with a leading edge extension(LEX) was examined through off-surface visualization, 5-hole probe and hot-film measurements. The off-surface flow visualization technique used micro water droplets generated by a home-style ultrasonic humidifier and a laser beam sheet. The angles of attack ranged from 10 to 30 degrees, and the sideslip angles ranged from 0 to -15 degrees. The Reynolds number was $1.82{\times}10^5$ for the flow visualization, and $1.76{\times}10^6$ for the 5-hole probe and hot-film measurements. The comparison of the visualization photos and the flow field measurement showed that the two results were in a good agreement for the relative position and the structure of the wing and LEX vortices, even though the flow Reynolds numbers of the two results were much different. The wing vortex and the LEX vortex coil each other while maintaining a comparable strength and identity at zero sideslip. Neither a looping of the wing vortex around the strake vortex, nor the lopsided coiling of the stronger strake and the weaker wing vortices was observed. At non-zero sideslip, the downward movement of the LEX vortex when going downstream was enhanced on the windward side, and the downward and inboard movement of the LEX vortex when going downstream was suppressed on the leeward side. The counterclockwise coiling of the wing and LEX vortices was decreased significantly on the leeward side.

  • Leading edge extension(LEX) in a highly swept shape applied to a delta wing features the modem air-fighters. The LEX vortices generated upon the upper surface of the wing at high angle of attack enhance the lift force of the delta wing by way of increased negative suction pressure over the surfaces. The present 3-D stereo PIV includes the Identification of 2-D cross-correlation equation, stereo matching of 2-D velocity vectors of two cameras, accurate calculation of 3-D velocity vectors by homogeneous coordinate system, removal of error vectors by a statistical method followed by a continuity equation criterion and so on. A delta wing model with or without LEX was immersed in a circulating water channel. Two high-resolution, high-speed digital cameras($1280pixel{\times}1024pixel$) were used to allow the time-resolved animation work. The present dynamic stereo PIV represents the complicated vortex behavior, especially, in terms of time-dependent characteristics of the vortices at given measuring sections. Quantities such as three velocity vector components, vorticity and other flow information can be easily visualized via the 3D time-resolved post-processing to make the easy understanding of the LEX effect or vortex emerging and collapse which are important phenomena occurring in the field of delta wing aerodynamics.

  • Delayed Detached-Eddy Simulation was conducted to investigate surface pressure coefficient distribution and surface pressure fluctuation over an ONERA 70-degree delta wing at a high angle of attack. Time-averaged surface pressure distribution is directly affected by the primary vortices, whereas the pressure fluctuation is influenced by the unsteady fluctuating boundary layer over the surface. And pressure coefficient, velocity, pressure fluctuation, and turbulent kinetic energy were analyzed along the vortex core in order to investigate the process of vortex breakdown. Consequently, strong pressure fluctuations were found where the vortex breakdown was occurred at x~620 mm. The turbulent kinetic energy abruptly increased and followed after the vortex breakdown.

  • The dominant effect of the interaction between vortices, generated by the addition of the Leading Edge Extension(LEX) in front of the wing, was well observed in this experiment. In this study, systematic approach by PIV experimental method within a circulating water channel was adopted to study the fundamental characteristics of induced vertex generation, development and its breakdown appearing on a delta wing model with or without LEX in terms of four angles of attack($15^{\circ}$, $20^{\circ}$, $25^{\circ}$, $30^{\circ}$) and six measuring sections(30%, 40%, 50%, 60%, 70%, 80%) of chord length. Distributions of time-averaged velocity vectors and vortices over the delta wing model were compared along the chord length direction. High-speed CCD camera which made it possible to acquire serial images is able to get the detailed information about the flow characteristics occurred on the delta wing. Especially quantitative comparison of the maximum vorticity featuring the induced pressure distribution were also conducted to clarity the significance of the LEX existence.

  • The present research was experimentally performed to analyze the effect of delta-wing vortex generators(DWVG) on the heat transfer of fin surface of the plate fin-oval tube. The local heat transfer coefficient of the fin surface for four kinds of DWVG's arrangement was measured by the naphthalene sublimation technique for Reynolds numbers ranging from 2000 to 3200. The results showed that the heat transfer of the plate fin-oval tube can be significantly enhanced by DWVG for relatively low Reynolds numbers.

  • The distinguishing features of flows at high angles of attacks are caused by the generation of free shear layers at sharp leading edges, by separation of the viscous layers from the surfaces of wings and bodies and by the flow in the wakes of the wings and bodies. In this study, systematic approach by PIV experimental method within a circulating water channel was adopted to study the fundamental characteristics of induced vortex generation, development and its breakdown appearing on a delta wing model with or without LEX in terms of four angles of attack($15^{\circ}$, $20^{\circ}$, $25^{\circ}$, $30^{\circ}$) and six measuring sections(30%, 40%, 50%, 60%, 70%, 80%) of chord length. Distributions of time-averaged velocity vectors and vorticities over the delta wing model were compared along the chord length direction. Highly swept leading edge extension(LEX) applied to delta wings has greatly improved the subsonic maneuverability of contemporary fighters. High-speed CCD camera which made it possible to acquire serial images is able to get the detailed information about the flow characteristics occurred on the delta wing. Especially quantitative comparison of the maximum vorticity featuring the induced pressure distribution were also conducted to clarity the significance of the LEX existence.

  • Velocity data were acquired at a series of stations in the chordwise direction above a delta wing with leading edge extension, using a triple axis hot film anemometry. Surveys normal to planform yield velocity field data at incidence angle of 24$^{\circ}$and 32$^{\circ}$at a centerline chord Reynolds number of $1.76{\times}10^6$. Experimental results of velocity measurements of mean velocity of three components gave a confidence to quantitative investigate the vortical flow field over a LEX-delta wing with this probe. The present experiments indicated the existence of both wing and LEX vortex where the local mean axial velocity is maximum. It also shown the development of secondary vortex of opposite sign of rotating above the wing surface near the leading edge. The insertion of probe across the flow field was found to have little influence on the position of the vortex core.

  • An experimental study of the vortical flow characteristics around a yawed delta wing with the leading edge extension at high incidence angle is undertaken by upper surface pressure measurements. A special emphasis has been put on analyzing the basic physics of vortical flows, concerning the effects of incidence and sideslip angle on the aerodynamic characteristics of the wing, especially under high angle of attack. The experimental data has been dearly demonstrated the beneficial effect of the LEX vortex on the wing vortex. It leads to an essential stabilization of the wing vortex against its breakdown until at much higher incidence angle under small sideslip. An interesting flow feature is occurrence of the rolling moment reversal at a certain range of angle of attack and sideslip angle.

  • Flow visualization and aerodynamic characteristics of delta wings with two different leading edge geometries are investigated by PIV system and wind tunnel balance when the Reynolds number is about based on the freestream velocity and the root chord length. Delta wing models have 65-deg swept angle, and the leading edge shapes are divided into round- and sharp- type. The experimental results indicated that the leading-edge vortex strength and aerodynamic coefficient in the round leading edge are stronger and more, respectively than those in the sharp one. Therefore the flow interactions between vortices and the boundary layer are more desirable or more rapidly swirled in the round-type leading edge.
