Effect of Processing Conditions on the Homogeneity of Partially Degummed Silk Evaluated by FTIR Spectroscopy

  • The partial degumming of silk has recently attracted researchers' attention because of its ability to produce silk textiles with new tactile properties, intermediate between the softness of fully degummed silk and the hardness of raw silk. However, it is difficult to obtain partially degummed silk in a homogenously degummed state due to the heterogeneous character of sericin removal. It is also difficult to examine the homogeneity of degumming. In the present study, Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy with attenuated total reflection (ATR) geometry was used to evaluate the effect of processing conditions on the degumming of silk yarns. The crystallinity index, calculated from FTIR spectra, showed an increase with the degumming ratio. Therefore, the homogeneity of degumming could be evaluated by the variation of crystallinity index for 30 different spots in silk yarns. The homogeneity of degumming was influenced by the total degumming time, the content of surfactant, and the liquor rate. No effect was observed upon changing the number of degumming cycles at the same total degumming time.

Degumming of Antheraea yamamai silkworm cocoon

  • Oak silkworm, Antheraea yamamai (A. yamamai), has been used for clothing and surgical suture and considered as biomaterial due to RGD tripeptide. This paper reported the degumming conditions of A. yamamai using sodium oleate, high pressure and temperature, and sodium carbonate. Degumming ratio of A. yamamai cocoon using sodium oleate was less than 10%. High pressure and temperature treatment induced 30% weight loss of A. yamamai cocoon. The concentration, treatment temperature and time using sodium carbonate was examined and revealed the following conditions for degumming; 5% owf, 60 min at 100℃. The degummed solution was confirmed using UV and FT-IR spectrometer. Our results can be used to handle A. yamamai silkworm cocoon for further application including material processing.

Effect of Surfactant on Homogeneity of Partially Degummed Silk Fiber

  • Silk has always been one of the most favored textile materials. Fully degummed silk fiber (i.e., silk fibers without sericin) shows better luster than raw silk fiber (with sericin); it is also softer. On the other hand, raw silk fiber feels cooler because of the presence of sericin, making it useful as a textile for the summer season. Recently, partially degummed silk has attracted researchers' attention because it provides better luster, feel, and dyeing properties. However, the partial degumming of silk is very difficult because it results in inhomogeneously degummed fiber. In the present study, silk yarns were degummed with surfactant aqueous solutions and the effects of each surfactant on the degumming ratio, crystallinity, and homogeneity of the degummed silk yarn were examined. The degumming ratio and crystallinity index of silk yarn varied depending on the type of surfactant. On the whole, anionic surfactants resulted in higher degumming ratios and better homogeneity than nonionic surfactants.

Silk Degumming by Electrolyzed Alkaline Water (전해 알칼리수에 의한 견의 정련)

  • This studies were carried out to develop the new silk degumming method by elelectrolyzed alkaline water on the silk degumming process. Using to this method, it could be collect pure sericin from the degumming water, because the degumming water by elelectrolyzed alkaline water was not contaminated by chemicals including soap. The range of elelectrolyzed alkaline water was pH 11.5 to 11.7 and maintained the first value for 8 days under the cool and closed conditions. The degumming ratio of silk was higher in elelectrolyzed alkaline water(pH 11.5~11.7)than that of soap and alkaline bath. When the pH value of elelectrolyzed alkaline water was adjusted at pH 11.0, the degumming ratio of silk was similar to that of soap and alkaline degumming. After degumming the pH value of degumming water decreased largely in the elelectrolyzed alkaline water compared to that of soap and alkaline bath. The tenacity and elongation of degummed silk by elelectrolyzed alkaline water was almost same those of soap and alkaline degumming for 90 min.

A Study on Enzymatic Degummings of Raw Silk and Silk Fabric (견의 효소 정련에 관한 연구)

  • The studies were carried out to screen the optimum conditions for enzymatic degumming of raw silk yarn and silk fabric by use of Alkalase, a protease produced by Bacteria, comparing with Papain and Trypsin representing natural proteolytic enzymes. 1. The optimum temperature and acidity of degumming solution were 70$^{\circ}C$, pH 5-6 for Papain degumming, 40$^{\circ}C$, pH 8 for Trypsin and 50-60$^{\circ}C$ pH 8-9 for Alkalase. 2. By increasing the Alkalase concentration in the range of 0.6 to 1.0 gram per liter, the time for enzymatic degumming of silk yarn could be reduced by 40 minutes. 3. In degumming of silk yarn by Alkalase, the pretreatment of 95$^{\circ}C$, 10 minutes at 0.1% sodium bicarbonate solution or posttreatent of 80$^{\circ}C$, 20 minutes at 2% (o.w.f.) sodium silicate solution improved the efficiency of enzymatic degumming, as compared to that of nontreatment. 4. The breaking strength, elongation and Lousiness results of enzymatically degummed silk yarn were apt to be improved more than those of soap-degummed one. 5. When the pretreatment of alkaline solution was done with over 20% of degumming ratio, the enzymatic degumming efficiency of both Havutae and Crepe de chine could be reached to the same level with those of soap-soda degummed. 6. As the pretreated silk fabric with 20% of degumming ratio was under action of three proteases, respectively, the deumming efficiency of Havutae and Crepe de chine were completed by Alkalase more than by Papain or Trpysin. 7. The stiffness of enzymatically degummed Crepe de chine was not only reduced by 17% more than that of soap-soda degummed one but also the Drape coefficient was decreased in enzymatically degummed fabrics, which was closely related with the soft touch of degummed fabrics.

Fixation of Sericin of Silk Fabric by Epoxy Resin (Epoxy수지에 의한 견직물의 Sericin정착)

  • The sericin fixation of silk fabrics by epoxy resins was studied in the presence of aqueous salt solution in different solvents at the indicated temperature for the desired time. Heavy weight gains were obtained in the reaction with glycerol diglycidyl ether (EX-313) and ethylene glycol diglycidyl ether (EX-810) catalyzed by potassium thiocyanate in such solvents as carbon tetrachloride and p-chloroethylene. The obtained results were summarized as follows; 1) The tested resins were found similar in reaction behavior to silk fabric. The effect of fixation and weight gains was higher in EX-810 than EX-313. 2) The weight gains were increased with reaction time and temperature, and degumming ratio reached a constant value in 90 min at 70$^{\circ}C$. 3) The weight gains and the degumming ratio reached an equilibrium at 3-5% of epoxy concentration. 4) The weight gains were remarkably influenced and increased by the concentration of salt solution. The degumming ratio reached an equilibrium over 0.5N concentration of salt. 5) The weight gains were increased with the dipping time in gently-sloping. The degumming ratio reached an equilibrium over 15 min dipping. 6) The effect of sericin fixation of hydrophobic solvents, such as Carbon Tetrachloride, p-Chloroeth-ylene, Cyclohexane, Xylene and Toluene, was found suitable. 7) The effect of drying temperature was not remarkable on the weight gains and the degumming ratio. 8) There was a slight decrease in the moisture regain of sericin-fixed silk and it may be possible to maintain the moisture regain in the sericin-fixed silk by the epoxy resins. 9) The results on testing physical properties of sericin-fixed silk fabric were as follows; The crease recovery was almost not different from undegummed fabric, but inferior to degummed fabric. The tensile strength was improving in accordance with the effect of sericin fixation, either the elongation did.

Degumming of Silk by Calcium hydroxide (Calcium Hydroxide에 의한 Silk의 정련)

  • Silk was treated with calcium hydroxide for degumming at different treatment times, temperatures and Ca(OH)$_2$ concentration to optimize degumming conditions in this thesis. After degumming, soluble and insoluble sericin were seperated and then the soluble sericin was characterized by measuring the average degree of polymerization (D.P.), lysinoalanine (LAL) content, DSC, and by amino acid analysis. And degummed silk fibroin was characterized by measuring tenacity and SEM. Degumming loss was increased by increasing the treatment time and temperature until about 30 minutes. After then, a slight difference was found along with treatment times at the Ca(OH)$_2$ concentrations of 0.07% and 0.1% solutions. After degumming, insoluble sericin ratio on degumming solution was increased by increasing treatment temperature at Ca(OH)$_2$ 0.04% solution. At the concentration Ca(OH)$_2$ of 0.07%, a soluble ratio was almost 100% regardless of treatment time and temperature. At the beginning of treatment, insoluble ratio was high at Ca(OH)$_2$ 0.1% solution but it was decreased by increasing treatment time. At the Ca(OH)$_2$ concentration of 0.04%, D.P. of soluble sericin was maintained as a constant value of 10 at 100$^{\circ}C$ although treatment time was increased. However, at 80$^{\circ}C$ and 90$^{\circ}C$, it was hard to prepare a soluble sericin having a constant D.P. by increasing treatment time. At the Ca(OH)$_2$ concentration of 0.07%, D.P. was almost 10 irrespective of treatment temperature and time. Soluble sericins with high D.P. of 20∼30 were obtained at 0.1% and 100$^{\circ}C$. LAL was not detected in soluble sericin. As the results of amino acid analysis, it showed that Ca(OH)$_2$ degumming reduced the contents of hydroxy amino acids like Ser., Thr. and Tyr. In DSC analysis of soluble sericin, endothermic peak by thermal deformation and pyrolysis showed at 189$^{\circ}C$ and at 299$^{\circ}C$, respectively. The tenacities of degummed silk were 15∼30% lower than that of raw silk. And it was decreased with increasing treatment time. From the morphological study, the thickness of degummed silk fibroin became thinner by increasing degumming loss. The roughness of a silk fibroin surface was appeared as treatment concentration was increased.

Effects of Some Sodium Phosphates as Auxiliary Agents for Softening Hard Water to Degum Silk (인산염이 견사련용수의 경수연화에 미치는 영향)

  • The effects of some sodium phosphates as auxiliary agents were studied on the blockade of hardness for silk degumming. In this work, four kinds of sodium phosphates were tested and the results were obtained through masking effects of metallic ions, difference of pH value and boil-off ratio. The degumming of calcium ingredient was analyzed by means of atomic absorption spectrophotometer and degumming test of cocoon shell was performed in the presence of calcium ingredient and sodium phosphates added to soap solution. In the view of the effects of sodium phosphates on calcium hardness, tetrasodium pyrophosphate(TSPP) and sodium phosphate dibasic(SPD) masked calcium ions more than sodium phosphate monobasic(SPM) and sodium hexametaphosphate(SHP). SHP and TSPP have excellent abilities of masking ferrous ions. The pH values of TSPP solution is higher than others, but lower than soap solution. The pH values were differently measured one another among the sodium phosphates but the boil-off ratio was increased in case of sodium phosphate with high pH value.

Studies on the compound spun silk and its fabrics (복합견방사 및 그 제품개발에 관한 연구)

  • In this study several kinds of spun silk yarn-synthetic filament compounded yarn was manufactured, and several fabrics woven from above mentioned silk compound yarn for evaluation of serviceability as clothing materials. The following results were obtained: 1. Degumming agents are in the order of sodium silicate, sodium hydroxide, sodium carbornate, soap and water. 2. When the concentration of sodium hydroxide is exceeded 3%, degradation of floss silk property is resulted because of excessive dissolving out of silk protein. 3. Degumming effect is much improved by concentration of degumming agent and less by its treating time. 4. Simultaneous application of more the 2 kinds of degumming agent is desirable for improvement of floss silk. 5. Application of natural organic acid brings very good results in keeping original scooping and color of the silk. 6. Load and elongation it increased by compound with synthetic filament yarn. 7. Even the evenness of compound yarn is largely dependent on the quality of floss silk and extent of degumming, the C.V.% of silk compound yarn in the experiment was 8-12%. 8. Single bath dyeing technique was impossible for their cloth, and dyeing was performed in 2 bath system separately for silk and synthetic fiber. 9. Shrinkage ratio due to the dyeing of fabric was 23% in case of polyester and spun silk fabric. 10. The final woven cloth can be applicable to (a) Blouse in care of thin cloth (compound silk fabric) (b) Korean costume for women in case of thick cloth. (compound hand spun silk fabric)

A Study on the Degumming and Dyeing of Silk Fabric in One Bath under the High Temperature and High Pressure (견직물의 고온고압일욕 정련염색에 관한 연구)

  • Silk fabrics were degummed and dyed in one bath under the condition of high temperature and high pressure and the results obtained were summerized as follows. 1. The degumming ratio is nearly the same as that of two bath method under the normal condition and the optimal condition is for 30 minutes at $120^{\circ}C$. 2. The dyeing absorption ratio is a little lower than that of two bath method. 3. The tensile strength and elongation are hardly shown the difference between two methods. 4. The fastness of the dyed fabric of one bath method is a little better than that of two bath method. (light, washing, rubbing) 5. The stiffness of the silk fabric treated by one bath method is a little harshier compare to that of two bath method.
