  • This study is aimed at determining stress and the degree of stress coping among nurse as well as such general characteristics as daily life styles, duty, and socio-demographic characteristics of that group. 525 nurses, from four university hospitals in Daejeon city underwent a self-administered questionnaire during the 3-week period from July. 21 to August. 9, 2003. The questions focused on general characteristics including: socio-demographic and duty characteristics, daily life styles, and stress and methods of coping with stress. Based on the distribution of degree of stresses, 66.1% of the study subjects were at the potential risk of stress, with the high risk group constituting 30.3% and the normal group 3.6%. The stress and the degree of stress coping were shown to be affected by socio-demographic and job-related characteristics as well as daily life styles. The group at higher risk of stress was shown to have a lower degree of coping with stress, implying that a lower degree of coping with stress would in turn heighten the occurrence of stress. Therefore, it is required to develop an effective strategy that includes stress-reduction programs available in the field and prompting further build-up of comprehensive stress-management programs.

For this purpose, a survey was conducted on new graduate nurses who were under 12 months old while working at three medical institutions that operated the preceptorship. In the preceptorship according to adult learning theory, the preceptors need to create a psychological environment for the new graduate nurses, and their empathy should be perceived by new graduate nurses. The study revealed that the new graduate nurses group with high level of empathy had high levels of job satisfaction, low job stress, and low degree of turnover intention, and the level of empathy affects job satisfaction of new graduate nurses. The new graduate nurses group with low level of perceived preceptor's empathy had low job satisfaction, high job stress, and high degree of turnover intention, and their perceived preceptor's empathy affected job stress and turnover intention. Based on these results, we suggest the introduction of a program to enhance empathy for new graduate nurses and preceptors.

  • The effects of job related factors on psychosocial health status were examined by taking job stress into account. The self-administered questionnaires were performed, during the period between Oct. 1st, 2009 and Nov. 30th, 2009, to 805 individuals in the service of general administration located in Daejeon City. Causal relationships between job related factors, job stress, and, psychosocial health status were examined by structural equation model. The main finding as follows: For correlations of such indices of psychosocial health status as PWI and MFS with various studied items, all of these two indices were found to be in a negative correlation with the job position, job career, satisfaction in job life, autonomy of job, supervisors support and coworkers support, whereas in positive correlation with the experience of sick absence per year and job demand. With the analysis of structural equation model, the degree of job stress factors was more influential on the level of psychosocial health status than job related factors in such a manner as that the greater the job stress, while the lower the job related factors, the higher the psychosocial health status(PWI and MFS). Moreover, it was found to have the inter-relational effects that the greater the job related factors, the lower the job stress factors. Thus the effective strategy for stress and fatigue symptoms reduction among governmental employees requires additional programs focusing on innovated job specifications.
