  • This study was performed to establish the process mean which is statistically satisfying the critical limit of deformation strength $(S_D)$, which is found to reflect rutting characteristics of asphalt mixture relatively well. The process means were determined using the critical $S_D$ values (3MPa for local highway and 4MPa for arterial highways), which were obtained from correlation analysis of APA and $S_D$ test data of actual highway projects, and coefficient of variation of 32 combinations of domestic mixtures. The process means of 3.2 MPa for local highway and 4.25 MPa for arterial highways were suggested when using 3 specimens (diameter of 100mm). However, since these values are based on the loading speed of 30mm/min, the higher values, 3.5 MPa for local highway and 4.5 MPa for arterial highways, were suggested, respectively, if the loading speed of 50mm/min is applied using the old Marshall machine, which should give higher test values.

  • The force-deformation relationship gives the basic physical properties of the fruits such as the bioyield point, the rupture point, and the deformations at the bioyield point and the rupture point. These informations are very important to study the stress-strain relationships of the fruits. This study was conducted to analyze those physical properties according to the sampling position of the fruits, and to determine the bioyield point, the rupture point, and the deformations at the bioyield point and the rupture point of the fruits for two different storage conditions(low temperature and normal temperature) and the storage period, and to investigate the effect of loading rate on those physical properties, the hysteresis on the loading-unloading condition and the degree of elasticity of the fruits. The results of the study were as follows : 1. The physical properties(BS, US, BD, and RD) of the test specimen selected from the different sampling positions were quite different. The values of the physical properties were shown smallest ones at the cheek of the fruits, and the statistical test results of the physical properties between the cheek from the other two positions of the fruits showed that there were significant difference at the 1 % level between them. 2. The effect of loading rate on the physical properties of the fruits was relatively large, all the considered physical propertis of the fruits increased with the loading rate, but the hysteresis loss decreased with it. 3. The physical properties of the fruits according to the storage conditions and period showed different, and the bioyield deformation and the rupture deformation of the fruits increased with the storage period, but the bioyield strength and the ultimate strength of the fruits decreased with it. The effect of the storage conditions on the those physical properties showed that the normal temperature storage condition was a little higher than the low temperature storage condition. 4. As a whole, it was shown that the bioyield strength and the ultimate strength of the pear decreased a little faster than those of the apple, and the bioyield deformation and rupture deformation of the pear increased a little faster than those of apple at the two storage conditions.

  • Since the relatively stiff binder shows a higher tensile strength as well as higher rutting resistance, it is believed that the binder stiffness is an important factor for rutting and tensile strength of asphalt mixtures. The typical tensile property is measured by indirect tensile strength (ITS) test at $25^{\circ}C$ and the rutting resistance is most widely measured by wheel tracking (WT) test at $60^{\circ}C$. The deformation strength ($S_D$) is newly developed property to estimate rut resistance of asphalt concretes at $60^{\circ}C$. The ITS and $S_D$ are very simple to measure by static test techniques, but the WT is measured by repeated loading procedure which requires relatively longer time and more efforts. Since these three properties are highly dependent upon the binder stiffness, it may be possible to estimate one property from another. Therefore, this study investigate the possibility of estimating the rutting characteristics (measured by WT test) by ITS or $S_D$ test, and the ITS by $S_D$. Because of binder stiffness effect, in the WT estimation by ITS, a tendency was observed for the higher ITS mixture to have the lower rut depth, giving $R^2{\fallingdotseq}$0.6, on the average. The ITS estimation by $S_D$ showed $R^2{\fallingdotseq}$0.64, and the WT estimation by SD showed $R^2{\fallingdotseq}$0.84, which is highest correlation among the three. Therefore, it was concluded that there is relatively good possibility of estimating WT result by $S_D$, and even though $R^2$ is somewhat low, there is some correlation between WT and ITS.

  • The widespread damage to steel Moment Resisting Frames (MRFs) in past major earthquakes have underscored the need to understand the nonlinear inelastic behaviour of such systems. To assess the seismic performance of steel MRF, it is essential to model the nonlinear force-deformation behaviour of beam to column joints. To determine the extent of inelasticity in a beam to column joint, nonlinear finite element analysis is generally carried out, which is computationally involved and demanding. In order to obviate the need of such elaborate analyses, a simplistic method to predict the force-deformation behaviour is required. In this study, a simple, mechanics driven, hand calculation method is proposed to obtain the forcedeformation behaviour of strong axis beam to column moment joints. The force-deformation behaviour for twenty-five interior and exterior beam to column joints, having column to beam strength ratios ranging from 1.2 to 10.99 and 2.4 to 22, respectively, have been obtained. The force-deformation behaviour predicted using the proposed method is compared with the results of finite element analyses. The results show that the proposed method predicts the force-deformation behaviour fairly accurately, with much lesser computational effort. Further the proposed method has been used to conduct Nonlinear Dynamic Time History Analyses of two benchmark frames; close correspondence of results obtained with published results establishes the usefulness and computational accuracy of the method.

  • The objective of this study is to analyze rut resistance and moisture susceptibility of warm mix asphalt(WMA) mixture. The deformation strength ($S_D$), which is known to have high correlations with the high-temperature deformation resistance of dense grade mixture, was used as a tool, together with wheel tacking (WT) test, for evaluating warm mix asphalt mixture's rut resistance.

  • Rock is a heterogeneous material, which introduces complexity in the analysis of rock slopes, since both the existing discontinuities within the rock mass and the intact rock contribute to the degradation of strength. Rock failure is often catastrophic due to the brittle nature of the material, involving the sliding along structural planes and the fracturing of rock bridge. This paper proposes an advanced discretization method of rock mass based on block theory. An in-house software, GeoSMA-3D, has been developed to generate the discrete fracture network (DFN) model, considering both measured and artificial joints. Measured joints are obtained from the photogrammetry analysis on the excavation face. Statistical tools then facilitate to derive artificial joints within the rock mass. Key blocks are searched to provide guidance on potential reinforcement measures. The discretized blocky system is subsequently implemented into a discontinuous deformation analysis (DDA) code. Strength reduction technique is employed to analyze the stability of the slope, where the factor of safety can be obtained once excessive deformation of slope profile is observed. The combined analysis approach also provides the failure mode, which can be used to guide the choice of strengthening strategy if needed. Finally, an illustrated example is presented for the analysis of a rock slope of 20 m height inclined at $60^{\circ}$ using combined GeoSMA-3D and DDA calculation.

  • This paper evaluates nonlinear response characteristics of precast concrete frame buildings. where plastics hinging occurs in the precast connection. Designs were developed for buildings of 5, 10 and 15 stories in hight for moderate seismic risk regions of the U. S. The responses of the buildings were analyzed using DRAIN-2DX and following Nonlinear static analysis procedure of ATC 19. The main variables of the analyses were the strength and stiffness of the connection. Also, for the analysis, the bi-linear response model, developed and inserted into the DRAIN-2DX program by Shan Shi and D. Fouch, was used. With the results of analysis, the deformation demands of the connection of precast concrete frame buildings are proposed by using equal-dissipated energy capacity. It was shown that the strength of the buildings as well as their displacement capacities decreased with the decrease of either the strength or stiffness in the connections. Therefore such changes also require reductions in the response modification factors for such buildings. However, if the precast concrete frame building has plastic hinging in the connection, and has a more ductile connection than the monolithic frame building, then no reduction in R may be necessary. The deformation demand required of the connection to achieve that condition is evaluated and a simple relation is suggested in the paper.

  • A machine frame has been manufactured by casting. However, due to the development of the industrial society, 3-D duties was refused. Especially, the declination of the casting industry makes it difficult to produce the frame. Many companies still manufacture the small casting products. The large casting products are extremely limited and manufactured for their own use. Therefore, it is difficult to keep the term of order. In this study, the characteristics of steel structure which is produced by welding were identified in the view of mechanical strength of steel structure which is produced by welding were identified in the view of mechanical strength to substitute steel structure for casting frame. But welding structure has the residual stress, HAZ and welding deformation. Residual stress and HAZ especially cause crack growth. The proposed steel structure, based on the simulation and experiment(tensile curve and S-N curve), can reduce not only the producting term but also the weight of the frame.
