  • Learning from the failure of mechanical systems is a necessity, given that it is the understanding of how and why things fail that generates effective redesign. This subsequently enables the technology that surrounds us to become more reliable, safer, and more economical by extending component life and minimizing the wasteful decisions made to replace systems that am either sound for continued operation could be easily repaired. Considerations for cost-effective decision making, so as to promote healthy machinery, equipment, and structures, are discussed in terms of learning from failure analysis, improving via reliability engineering, and achieving longevity through integrated diagnostics.

  • With the growing importance of evidence-based medicine, clinical or biomedical research relies critically on the validity and reliability of data, and the subsequent statistical inferences for medical decision-making may lead to valid conclusion. Despite widespread use of analytical techniques in papers published in the Journal of Veterinary Clinics statistical errors particularly in design of experiments, research methodology or data analysis methods are commonly encountered. These flaws often leading to misinterpretation of the data, thereby, subjected to inappropriate conclusions. This article is the first in a series of nontechnical introduction designed not to systemic review of medical statistics but intended to provide the journal readers with an understanding of common statistical concepts, including data scale, selection of appropriate statistical methods, descriptive statistics, data transformation, confidence interval, the principles of hypothesis testing, sampling distribution, and interpretation of results.

  • Chloride ingress is a common cause of deterioration of reinforced concrete structures. Modeling the chloride ingress is an important basis for designing reinforced concrete structures and for assessing the reliability of an existing structure. The modelling is also needed for predicting the deterioration of a reinforced structure. This paper presents an approach for the probabilistic modeling of the chloride-induced corrosion of reinforcement steel in concrete structures that takes into account the uncertainties in the physical models. The parameters of the models are modeled as random variables and the distribution of the corrosion time and probability of corrosion are determined by using Monte Carlo simulation. The predictions of the proposed model is very effective to do the decision-making about initiation time and deterioration degree.

  • Generation Expansion Planning (GEP) is one of the most important decision-making activities in electric utilities. Least-cost GEP is to determine the minimum-cost capacity addition plan (i.e., the type and number of candidate plants) that meets forecasted demand within a pre specified reliability criterion over a planning horizon. In this paper, Differential Evolution (DE), and Opposition-based Differential Evolution (ODE) algorithms have been applied to the GEP problem. The original GEP problem has been modified by incorporating Virtual Mapping Procedure (VMP). The GEP problem of a synthetic test systems for 6-year, 14-year and 24-year planning horizons having five types of candidate units have been considered. The results have been compared with Dynamic Programming (DP) method. The ODE performs well and converges faster than DE.

  • The purpose of this study is concerned with suggesting a new a, pp.oach to evaluating the overall product quality in the sense of the relative efficiency of products, whose quality is measured with 8-dimensional attributes, suggested by Garvin. The attributes included 8 quality measures, that is, performance, features, reliability, conformance, durability, serviceabilit, aesthetics, and perceived quality. This study, also, introduced DEA(Data Envelopment Analysis) as an evaluation tool to tackle the problem of how to measure one product against another when each product can be measured along a number of dimensions, and given that there exists no a priori satisfactory weighting scheme to combine these dimensions into an overall rating for each products. In order to a, pp.y the DEA to evaluating the products, we must define two concepts, such as DMU(Decision Making Units) and input-output relationship. Finally, the suggested method in this study was validated through a case study of the electric jar, and this DEA a, pp.oach can be used in evaluating the other products with multi-attrribute quality.

  • Over the past two decades, forecasting has gained widespread acceptance as an integral part of business planning and decision making. Accurate forecasting is a prerequisite to successful planning. Accordingly, recent advances in forecasting techniques are of exceptional value to corporate planners. But most of forecasting mothods are reveal its limit and problem for precision and reliability duing to each relationship for raw data and possibility of explanation for each variable. Therefore, to construct the Integrated Forecasting Model(IFM) for Information Factor Analysis, it shoud be considered that whether law data has time lag and variables are explained. For this. following several method can be used : Least Square Method, Markov Process, Fibonacci series, Auto-Correlation, Cross-Correlation, Serial Correlation and Random Walk Theory. Thus, the unified property of these several functions scales the safety and growth of the system which may be varied time-to-time.

  • Proto-type Korean High Speed Train(HSR 350x) had developed in 2002 through G7 High Speed Train R&D project from 1996, had carried successful trial running test up to 350km/h and has been executing running test more than 0.2 Mil. kilometers of accumulated running distance to insure reliability on service line till July 2008. Even though the R&D project has finished by Oct. 2007, the proto-type train HSR 350x has maintaining various measuring functions and test facilities till now. So it may be needed a suggestion on the direction of practical use in public purpose of the HSR 350x. This study has suggested several directions of practical use in public purpose of the HSR 350x, and feasibilities for each alternatives of practical use in order to contribute making reasonable decision for practical use of the train in public purpose for the future.

  • The smart jammer launches jamming attacks which degrade the transmission reliability. In this paper, smart jamming attacks based on the communication probability over different channels is considered, and an anti-jamming Q learning algorithm (AQLA) is developed to obtain anti-jamming knowledge for the local region. To accelerate the learning process across multiple regions, a multi-regional intelligent anti-jamming learning algorithm (MIALA) which utilizes transferred knowledge from neighboring regions is proposed. The MIALA algorithm is evaluated through simulations, and the results show that the it is capable of learning the jamming rules and effectively speed up the learning rate of the whole communication region when the jamming rules are similar in the neighboring regions.

  • As construction projects become larger, process plans become more complex, and inadequate process management leads to waste of time and resources. Effective process management requires process management techniques that can identify problems inherent in the process, continuously improve, and reflect interdependent process characteristics. In the field, the day's details by work type and work status are to be entered in the work daily report. However, even when important information is written, it is not directly linked to the overall process management. This study aims to propose specific process management and decision-making plan based on actual worker by visualizing and quantifying the information described in the existing work daily report. It is expected efficient process management to increase reliability and productivity through process management, which can increase the utilization of work daily reports and facilitates organic communication among participants.
