Design and Application of a Passive Filter Control System

  • The passive filter is economic and efficient in suppressing harmonics but it may cause resonance problems and its performance is constantly dependent on power system impedance or working conditions of loads. This paper presents the DSP (Digital Signal Processor)-based control system, which automatically controls the passive filter in order to solve these problems. The control system can automatically control the passive filter according to working conditions of loads and measured harmonics, reactive power, power factor and so on. Experimental results in the power system using the 100HP DC motor drive are presented in order to verify the performance of the control system.

  • The interest for harmonic problems has been increasing due to the increment of nonlinear loads. The loads such as DC power system, personal computers, UPS system, inverters and converters operate as harmonic current sources. In this paper, a new type of the passive filter, Hybrid Harmonic Filter (HHF) is suggested to mitigate harmonic problems in power systems. The HHF is developed for reducing harmonic current, especially on the system that includes 6-pulse bridge rectifiers. Also, it is expected to prevent the overheating of transformers and feeders due to overcurrent and to correct the power factor.

  • This paper analyzes a resonant inverter to generate plasma. The resonant inverter consists of a full bridge converter, resonant network and reactor to generate a magnetic field for plasma generation. A plasma load has very distinct characteristics compared to conventional loads. The characteristics of plasma load are analyzed through experimental results. This paper presents the study on the resonant network, which was performed in order to determine how to achieve a constant current gain. Another important contribution of this study is the analysis of drop-out phenomenon observed in plasma loads which is responsible for unpredictable shutdown of the plasma generator that requires stable operation. In addition, the design process for the resonant network of a plasma generator is proposed. The validity of this study is verified through simulations and experimental results.

  • Recently, demands for large-capacity electronic loads are increasing in various industries such as a reliability test for the performance of a DC power supply device or a dummy-load for improving the stability of an independent microgrid to be actively built in the future. The electronic load required in these various fields requires an operation such as a continuously variable resistance load while minimizing the switching harmonic component generated in the electric load current in order to reduce the influence of interference from the load peripheral device. Electronic loads require a system that minimizes switching current ripple for load control. Therefore, in this paper, we propose a three-level module converter structure to reduce the current ripple of an electronic load, and a multilevel interleaved power converter topology to reduce the current ripple. The validity of the proposed electronic load, 3-level 6 interleaver converter, was verified by simulation and experiment. In addition, the user's convenience was provided by applying the emotional command curve interface method.

  • For motor operation at low speeds and loads, torque pulsation by the cogging torque is often a source of vibration and control difficulty. In this paper, the magnetic field of a motor is calculated by finite element method. The periodic cogging torque is determined using Maxwell stress method and time stepping method, and then decomposed using fourier series expansion, The purpose of this paper is to characterize design parameters on the cogging torque and to design a permanent magnet motor with a cogging torque less vulnerable to vibration, without sacrificing the motor performance. The design parameters include stator slot width, permanent magnet slot width, airgap length and magnetization direction. A new design with a less populated frequency spectrum of the cogging torque is proposed after characterizing individual effect of design parameters. Magnet pole edge shaping, by gradually increasing the cogging torque with reduced higher harmonics.

  • This paper deals with the electric energy saving system for lighting with power conditioning, which aims at the integration of power quality improvement and energy saving. The system consists of a CCVSI(Current-Controlled Voltage Source Inverter) and VCVSI(Voltage-Controlled Voltage Source Inverter). The CCVSI is connected in parallel to a grid, which can be operated to compensate the reactive power demanded by nonlinear and variation loads. The VCVSI is connected to the CCVSI through the DC capacitor (DC side) and in series on the AC side(lighting load), which can perform the energy saving. The operation of the proposed system is confirmed through the simulation and its usefulness is discussed.

  • In this paper, a novel multi voltage inverter system is proposed for reductions of harmonics, which can compensate reactive power. At first, we remove capacitor at input side for reactive power compensation. Secondly, by adding DC voltage to the filter capacitor, it can control power factors as lead-phase according to alterations of loads at power reception. Thirdly, if winding and single phase-bridge inverter(auxiliary circuit) is installed to DC power for reduction of harmonic, waveform of output voltages become to 36-steps. Thus, SVC(static var compensator) systems which can reduce harmonics are designed.

  • In the buck-boost DC-DC converter which is used at a certain situation such as in factories where loads often change a lot, the switches in the device make big energy loss in operating at Buck-Boost Mode due to hard switching and are affected by lots of stresses which decrease the efficiency rate of the converter. In order to improve this problem, to decrease the loss of snubber and switching, it has been investigated that zero voltage switching mode and zero current switching mode which make the operation of switches with soft switching. For the more sophisticated and advanced device, this paper is presented the Partial Resonant Soft Switching Mode Power Converter which is adapted the power converter having the partial resonant soft switching mode, that makes switches operate when the resonant current or voltage becomes zero by making the resonant circuit partially at turning on and off of the switches with suitable layout of the resonant elements and switch elements in the converter. Also, this paper includes the analysis and simulation of the Partial Resonant type Buck-Boost Chopper.

  • In this paper, Neuro-Fuzzy controller which has the characteristic of Fuzzy control and artificial Neural Network is designed A fuzzy rule to be applied is selected automatically by the allocated neurons. The neurons correspond to Fuzzy rules which are created by the expert. In order to adaptivity, the more precise modeling is implemented by error back propagation learning of adjusting the link-weight of fuzzy membership function in Neuro-fuzzy controller. The more classified fuzzy rule is used to include the property of Dual mode Method. To test the effectiveness of the algorithm designed above the experiment for DC servo motor with variable load as variable load plant is implementation.

직류 도시철도 변전소 수요전력 예측 (Power Demand Forecasting in the DC Urban Railway Substation)

  • Power demand forecasting is an important factor of the peak management. This paper deals with the 15 minutes ahead load forecasting problem in a DC urban railway system. Since supplied power lines to trains are connected with parallel, the load characteristics are too complex and highly non-linear. The main idea of the proposed method for the 15 minutes ahead prediction is to use the daily load similarity accounting for the load nonlinearity. An Euclidean norm with weighted factors including loads of the neighbor substation is used for the similar load selection. The prediction value is determinated by the sum of the similar load and the correction value. The correction has applied the neural network model. The feasibility of the proposed method is exemplified through some simulations applied to the actual load data of Incheon subway system.
