This study was conducted to develop new lines expressing the characteristic of early flowering by introducing MdMADS2 gene in chrysanthemum (Dendranthema grandiflorum (Ramat.) Kitamura) ‘Zinba'. Transformation of chrysanthemum was conducted by Agrobacterium tumefaciens LBA4404 harboring the binary vector containing MdMADS2 controlled by double CaMV 35S promoters. Ninety three shoots were regenerated from 1,463 leaf segment explants cultured on the first selection medium (MS basal salts + 1.0 mg/L BA + 0.5 mg/L IAA + 10 mg/L kanamycin + 400 mg/L cefotaxime, pH 5.8) after co-cultivation, and 20 out of the 93 shoots rooted on the second selection medium containing 20 mg/L kanamycin and 400 mg/L cefotaxime. Many escapes (98.6%) were removed on the selection stage for rooting. Nineteen lines were confirmed as transgenic plant with transgene by PCR analysis. Six transgenic plants flowered 2-11 days earlier than non-transgenic plant without big change of phenotype, and especially, 3 (Mo-7, Mo-11, Mo-17) out of 6 transgenic lines showed a significant reduction in days to flowering compared to non-transgenic plant. Introduction and expression of MdMADS2 gene in them were confirmed by Southern and real-time PCR analyses, respectively.
This study was conducted to investigate the flowering habit for the botanical types of peanut (Arachis hypogaea. L) in cultural limiting region. Eight peanut varieties pertaining to virginia, Spanish, Valencia, Shinpung type were used in this study. Shinpung type, a new erect type was developed at Crop Experiment Station, ORD. Appearance of the first flower of peanut plants is observed at a relatively early growing stage. Number of days to first flower were 41 days under vinyl-mulching while non-mulching culture took 55 days. Number of days to first flower were delayed in order of Valencia, Spanish, Shinpung, Virginia type. Flowering durations were distinguished among botanical types and days of those were Virginia 85-93, Spanish 101-105, Valencia 106-113, Shinpung 82-88 days, respectively. The Spanish and Valencia types produced more flowers than Virginia and Shinpung types. The maximum flowering stage of Shinpung and Virginia types reached early and ceased by one cycle, while Spanish and Valencia types came late and showed maximum stage through the early and late stage during the growth stage. By vinyl-mulching, the maximum flowering stage was shortened by 20 days than that of non-mulching. Distribution of flowers for each of branch positions to total flowers occupied 52-53% in two cotyledonary branchs, 23-27% in 3rd to 5th branchs, 20-25% in over. 6th branchs. Shinpung type was considered more favorable botanical type than the other types for the breeding of early maturing high yielding variety because of shortening of days to first flower, flowering duration and distribution of lower branch of effective flowers.
This study was conducted to characterize comparatively the accumulative patterns of protein and oil, temporal changes in electrophoretic components of proteins during seed development and maturation for the soybean varieties with high, medium and low protein contents. 1. The dry matter of the developing seed increases slowly for the first 22 days after flowering, followed by rapid linear increase for 20 to 30 days and further slow increase for 5 to 15 days attaining its maximum. During the period 12 to 27 days after flowering the protein content of seed increases rapidly while oil content increases rapidly. Following this period of rapid changes, there was period of slow increase until 40 to 47 days after flowering and no seizable further change in the content of both protein and oil. 2. The high protein variety, Saikai # 20, was characterized by shorter period and lower rate of decrease in protein content during the early period, followed by longer period and higher rate of increase in protein content, with earlier stop of oil accumlation during the seed development. 3. The low protein and high oil variety, Shelby, was characterized by longer period of decrease in protein content and shorter period of increase in protein content in contrast to the longer period of slow oil increase during seed development. 4. The temporal pattern of protein component accumulation during seed development was distinctly different among varieties differing in protein content. The time of distinct appearance of all the protein components identifiable in the matured seeds was in accordance with the end of d crease in the protein content of seed. A component having Rm of 0.03 which was absent in the matured seeds was identifiable during the first 17 days after flowering. 5. The high protein variety, Saikai # 20, had much higher compositioral ratio of the component a from the early days of seed development and it continued to increase until 47 days after flowering, while the increase in the composition of the component a stopped as early as 27 days after flowering in the other lower protein varieties. 6. The composition of the component b increased during the period from 17 to 42 days after flowering in all the varieties tested, but the rate of increase during the period was lowest in the high protein variety, Saikai # 20.
The longer pollen stage grew to flowering stage, the higher anther respiratory rate in vivo became. and it was rapidly increased just before flowering. The anther respiratory rate in vitro showed the first and second peak points after 3-7 days and 9-1l days in culture, respectively, and fastest and highest in Daecheongbyeo with high sporophytic potentiality. It was lower in cold-pretreatment than non-treatment at the early days, but higher from 15 days after culture. The frequency of browning anthers was promoted by cold-pretreatment. The respiratory rate was not different between uncolored and browned anthers at 12 days, but it was higher in browned anthers after 24 days in culture.
A freesia (Freesia hybrida Hort.) 'Shiny Bell' was developed for the cut flower in the National Institute of Horticultural Herbal Science in 2012. This hybrid was selected from a crossing between cn. 'Teresa' and 'Rossini', which is white semi-double flowering and red double flowering, respectively. in 2004. Morphological characteristics of the selected hybrid were investigated for 3 years from 2009 to 2011, and then it was named 'Shiny Bell'. 'Shiny Bell' had red color of RHS W155C, and double flower. The growth of the plant was vigorous and the average height was 109.3 cm. The average flower width was 5.8 mm, number of floret per stalk was 11.3, and stalk length was 8.5 cm. The average yield, 7.3 Branches per plant, was 3 stems per plant more than the control cultivar. The average days to first flowering of 'Shiny Bell', was 143.3 days, and it was approximately 7 days later than the control cultivar. The average yield of 'Shiny Bell' was 4.0 cormlets per plant.

It is highly anticipated that warming temperature resulting from global climate change will affect the phenological pattern of kiwifruit, which has been commercially grown in Korea since the early 1980s. Here, we present the potential impacts of climate change on the variations of flowering day of a gold kiwifruit cultivar, Haegeum, in the Jeonnam Province, Korea. By running six global climate models (GCM), the results from this study emphasize the uncertainty in climate change scenarios. To predict the flowering day of kiwifruit, we obtained three parameters of the 'Chill-day' model for the simulation of Haegeum: $6.3^{\circ}C$ for the base temperature (Tb), 102.5 for chill requirement (Rc), and 575 for heat requirement (Rh). Two separate validations of the resulting 'Chill-day' model were conducted. First, direct comparisons were made between the observed flowering days collected from 25 kiwifruit orchards for two years (2014-15) and the simulated flowering days from the 'Chill-day' model using weather data from four weather stations near the 25 orchards. The estimation error between the observed and simulated flowering days was 5.2 days. Second, the model was simulated using temperature data extracted, for the 25 orchards, from a high-resolution digital temperature map, resulting in the error of 3.4 days. Using the RCP 4.5 and 8.5 climate change scenarios from six GCMs for the period of 2021-40, the future flowering days were simulated with the 'Chill-day' model. The predicted flowering days of Haegeum in Jeonnam were advanced more than 10 days compared to the present ones from multi-model ensemble, while some individual models resulted in quite different magnitudes of impacts, indicating the multi-model ensemble accounts for uncertainty better than individual climate models. In addition, the current flowering period of Haegeum in Jeonnam Province was predicted to expand northward, reaching over Jeonbuk and Chungnam Provinces. This preliminary result will provide a basis for the local impact assessment of climate change as more phenology models are developed for other fruit trees.
It is important to predict the flowering dates of Japanese cherry and autumnal dates in Korea. Flowering date is decided by heating requirement with daily maximum and minimum temperature used to calculate the pre-determined heating requirements for flowering. Recent, changes in climate have impacted the flowering season of Japanese cherry in Korea. When compared with the current normal, the flowering of Japanese cherry is expected to be about 10 days earlier than in near future normal years. In this paper, we first consider a linear model based on meteorological data that predicts the flowering date and then incorporate a spatial structure into the model. Real data analysis indicates that the proposed approach provides more reasonable predicted dates.

Miscanthus has been considered as the most promising bioenergy crop for lignocellulosic biomass production. In Korea, M. sacchariflorus and M. sinensis can be found easily in all regions. It is a great advantage to utilize as important species with respect to genetic and cross-breeding programs materials for creation of novel hybrids. For successful breeding programs, it is important to precisely understand the variability of flowering traits among Miscanthus species as breeding parents materials. In this study, flowering traits were observed daily in 960 germplasms of two Miscanthus species (M. sacchariflorus and M. sinensis) for growing seasons over 2 years. The flowering process was divided into three stages. ST (sprouting time) was recorded when first leaf of the plant emerged on soil. FS1 (flowering stage 1) and FS2 (flowering stage 2) were recorded when flag leaf was firstly observed, and 1 cm of panicle was showing on at least one stem, respectively. For 2013 and 2014, the latest germplasms exerted flag leaf, i.e. September 30 (DOY of FS1 164.1) and September 4 (DOY of FS1 141.0) occurred M. sacchariflorus cv. Geodae 1 and M. sacchariflorus cv. Uram collected from Southern Korea (Jeollanam-do), while Miscanthus germplasms collected from northern Korea (Gyeonggi-do) which emerged the earliest flag leaf in July and August, significantly decreased DOY. For DOY from ST to FS2, M. sacchriflorus germplasms ranged from 140 to 190 days, and 110 to 170 days for 2013 and 2014. The highest frequency showed to 160 days for 2013, and 150 days for 2014. In M. sinensis germplasms, the highest frequency showed to 180 days for 2013, and 170 days for 2014. In the results of correlation between the day of years from ST to FS2 for 2013 and 2014, M. sacchriflorus and M. sinensis showed high coefficient of correlation (0.70 and 0.89). It can be supposed that flowering characteristics of Miscanthus are largely affected by the unique phenotypic characteristic of native habitat than environmental factors of the current planted site. This study for flowering traits of Miscanthus may provides an important information in order to expedite the introduction as breeding materials for creation of new hybrid.
This study was conducted to examine characteristics of rhizome growth and flowering of white lotus (Nelumbo nucifera) plant in Muan Hoesan-lake for collecting the basic data on the cultivation and the flowering which is growing in Muan Hoesan-lake of Jeonnam province in Korea. We have planted from the seeds and the enlarged rhizomes of the white lotus which were planted in the plastic containers on April 20 and May 4, 2008, and cultivated under rain shelter condition. Rhizome growth pattern and the flowering characteristics of the white lotus were examined on September 4, 2008. Main rhizomes of the white lotus propagated by the seeds and the enlarged rhizomes were branched by 10% and 15%, respectively. Numbers of nodes in the bloomed and non-bloomed rhizomes of the white lotus were over 14 and below 11, respectively. Flower was not observed in the white lotus when propagated with seeds, however, flowers came out up to 80% by the enlarged rhizomes. First flowers were bloomed from the late July and to the early August, and the number of flowers were 4.0~4.4. The first flower stalks without branching of the main rhizome were emerged in 8.8th node, however, that with branching were 8.0th node. Time to flowering from the emergence of flower stalk on the above-ground parts were required 16 days. White flowers from the lotus were 15.3 cm in height and 28.2 cm in width, their longevity was 3.3 days and the averaged flower fresh weight was 29.2 g. The results conclude that optimum number of nodes on the main rhizomes for blooming the white lotus flowers should be over 8 nodes before the rhizome enlargement.
This study was conducted to evaluate the growth characters and yield components of 18 collected sesame cultivars to get basic information on the variation for the sesame breeding using principal component analysis. All characters except days to flowering, days to maturity and 1,000 seed weight showed significantly different. Seed weight per 10 are showed higher coefficient of variance. Capsule bearing stem length and liter weight showed positive correlation with seed yield per 10 are. The principal components analysis grouped the estimated sesame cultivars into four main components which accounted for 83.7% of the total variation at the eigenvalue and its contribution to total variation obtained from principal component analysis. The first principal component ($Z_1$) was applicable to increase plant height, capsule bearing stem length and 1,000-seed weight. The second principal component ($Z_2$) negatively correlated with days to flowering and maturity by which it was applicable to shorten flowering and maturity date of sesame. At the scatter diagram, Yangbaek, Ansan, M1, M2, M4, M7 and M9 were classified as same group, but M10, Yanghuk, Kanghuk, M5, M6, M12 and M13 were classified as different group. This results would be helpful for sesame breeder to understand genetic relationship of some agronomic characters and select promising cross lines for the development of new sesame variety.
