  • We are interested in the curve fitting problems in such a way that the sum of the squares of the orthogonal distances to the given data points is minimized. Especially, the fitting an ellipse to the given data points is a problem that arises in many application areas, e.g. computer graphics, coordinate metrology, etc. In [1] the problem of fitting ellipses was considered and numerically solved with general purpose methods. In this paper we present another new ellipse fitting algorithm. Our algorithm if mainly based on the steepest descent procedure with the view of ensuring the convergence of the corresponding quadratic function Q(u) to a local minimum. Numerical examples are given.

  • This paper is the study on the development of a torque precision measuring system using the curve fitting algorithm. This system can be divided into the hardware part and the software part. The hardware part consists of the main base board, the DAQ(Data Aquisition) board and Calibration parts. The software part consists of the software filter module and the curve fitting algorithm module. We have tested the torque transducer including the strain gauge for 200 Nm range and have analyzed the data acquired with the curve fitting algorithm by using this system. The DAQ board converts the electric signal induced by the transducer to the digital value precisely by using the shunt calibration procedure. The main board including the curve fitting algorithm calculates the exact digital torque value by using the digital value from the DAQ board. In this study, we confirmed that the result of the appropriate high-order power-series polynomial function is more accurate than the result of the low-order power-series polynomial through the system.

  • Object detection and parameter estimation in point cloud data is a relevant subject to robotics, reverse engineering, computer vision, and sport mechanics. In this paper a software is presented for fully-automatic object detection and parameter estimation in unordered, incomplete and error-contaminated point cloud with a large number of data points. The software consists of three algorithmic modules each for object identification, point segmentation, and model fitting. The newly developed algorithms for orthogonal distance fitting (ODF) play a fundamental role in each of the three modules. The ODF algorithms estimate the model parameters by minimizing the square sum of the shortest distances between the model feature and the measurement points. Curvature analysis of the local quadric surfaces fitted to small patches of point cloud provides the necessary seed information for automatic model selection, point segmentation, and model fitting. The performance of the software on a variety of point cloud data will be demonstrated live.

  • The purpose of this study is the machining of texture shapes by the contour fitting data. The hardware of the system comprises PC and scanning system, CO2 laser machine. There are four steps, (1) text image loading using scanning shapes or 2D image files, (2) generation of contour fitting data by the line and arc, cubic Bezier curve, (3) generation of NC code from the contouring fitting data, (4) machining by the DNC system. It is developed a software package, with which can conduct a micro CAM system of CNC laser machine in the PC without economical burden.

  • Reverse engineering involves digitizing a three-dimensional model or part converting the data to a CAD database description and manufacturing by CNC. Currently, the digitization is done through measurements taken manually by a CMM or touch probe mounted on a CNC machinetool. Some reverse engineering techniques require close integration between the data collection method and the surface-fitting algorithms. Accurate surface data are collected by input to the surface fitting method. This study has been found that both the smoothness of surfaces and accuracy of surface fitting are related with the degree of the interpolated surfaces.

  • An algorithm for fitting with Least Square is a traditional and an effective method in processing with experimental data. Due to the lack of definite representation, it is difficult to fit measured data with free curves or surfaces. B-Spline is usefully utilized to express free curves and surfaces with a few parameters. This paper presents the combination of these two techniques to process the point data measured from CMM and other similar instruments. This research shows tests and comparison of the simulation results from two techniques.

  • Tree algorithms have been widely developed for regression problems. One of the good features of a regression tree is the flexibility of fitting because it can correctly capture the nonlinearity of data well. Especially, data with sudden structural breaks such as the price of oil and exchange rates could be fitted well with a simple mixture of a few piecewise linear regression models. Now that split points are determined by chi-squared statistics related with residuals from fitting piecewise linear models and the split variable is chosen by an objective criterion, we can get a quite reasonable fitting result which goes in line with the visual interpretation of data. The piecewise linear regression by a regression tree can be used as a good fitting method, and can be applied to a dataset with much fluctuation.

  • This study was conducted to estimate the design flood by the determination of best fitting order of LH-moments of the annual maximum series at six and nine watersheds in Korea and Australia, respectively. Adequacy for flood flow data was confirmed by the tests of independence, homogeneity, and outliers. Gumbel (GUM), Generalized Extreme Value (GEV), Generalized Pareto (GPA), and Generalized Logistic (GLO) distributions were applied to get the best fitting frequency distribution for flood flow data. Theoretical bases of L, L1, L2, L3 and L4-moments were derived to estimate the parameters of 4 distributions. L, L1, L2, L3 and L4-moment ratio diagrams (LH-moments ratio diagram) were developed in this study. GEV distribution for the flood flow data of the applied watersheds was confirmed as the best one among others by the LH-moments ratio diagram and Kolmogorov-Smirnov test. Best fitting order of LH-moments will be derived by the confidence analysis of estimated design flood in the second report of this study.

  • We are interested in the problem of fitting a parabola to a set of data points in ℝ3. It can be usually solved by minimizing the geometric distances from the fitted parabola to the given data points. In this paper, a parabola fitting algorithm will be proposed in such a way that the sum of the squares of the geometric distances is minimized in ℝ3. Our algorithm is mainly based on the steepest descent technique which determines an adequate number λ such that h(λ) = Q(u - λ𝛁Q(u)) < Q(u). Some numerical examples are given to test our algorithm.

  • The interpolation of scattered data with radial basis functions is knwon for its good fitting. But if data get large, the coefficient matrix becomes almost singular. We introduce different knots and nodes to improve condition number of coefficient matrix. The singulaity of new coefficient matrix is investigated here.
