  • This paper describes a new concept of finite element analysis, which is based on neural network based material models (NNCMs) without invoking any pre-chosen mathematical framework. NNCMs have several advantages over conventional constitutive models (CCMs) and once plugged in a finite element (FE) engine, can be used for FE analysis in a manner similar to CCMs. The paper demonstrates a FE framework in which NNCMs are incorporated and also proposes a strategy for data enhancement by invoking the assumption of isotropy of the material. It is shown through some illustrative examples that this provides a better training environment for a generalized NNCM in which stress and strain components are used as effects and cause. Form this study, it appears that there is a prima facia case for developing NNCMs for materials for which mathematical theories become too complex and a large number of material parameters and constants have to be identified or determined.

  • A computer program (DIFSIM: Diffusion SIMulator) was written to calculate the impurity profile, specifically boron and phosphorus, due to three different diffusion processes-predeposition, drive-in in inert ambient, and drive-in in oxidizing ambient. The vacancy mechanism including Fair and Tsai's theory for phosphDrus diffusion was widely incorporated for modeling various diffusion processes. The concentrationtependent oxidation rate was also explained using the vacancy model, while the oxidation - enhanced diffusion was mo dolled using catkins replacement mochanlsm . The simulation results using DIFSIM showed a fairly good agreement with the experimental data by adjusting some of the empirical parameters in the program. The results obtained using DIFSIM were compared with the results from SUPREM II.

  • Solar heat flux data is needed for thermal load prediction of launch vehicle. In order to predict the solar flux, several solar flux models have been compared and a new model is developed. Most of the models can predict well the direct solar flux, but show some errors in the scattered solar flux. The newly developed model considered isotropic and anisotropic scattered solar fluxes, and the predicted solar flux agreed well with the measured. Because the present model can be used at any longitude, latitude, day and altitude, the model would be an useful tool to predict the thermal load of the launch vehicle and the vehicles which have to consider the solar heat.

  • In this study a simple model is developed that predicts impact damage in a composite laminate avoiding the need of the time-consuming dynamic finite element method (FEM). The analytical model uses a non-linear approximation method (Rayleigh-Ritz) and the large deflection plate theory to predict the number of failed plies and damage area in a quasi-isotropic composite circular plate (axisymmetric problem) due to a point impact load at its centre. It is assumed that the deformation due to a static transverse load is similar to that oc curred in a low velocity impact. It is found that the model, despite its simplicity, is in good agreement with FEM predictions and experimental data for the deflection of the composite plate and gives a good estimate of the number of failed plies due to fibre breakage. The predicted damage zone could be used with a fracture mechanics model developed by the second investigator and co-workers to calculate the compression after impact strength of such laminates. This approach could save significant running time when compared to FEM solutions.

  • As most of today's automatic transmissions in passenger car adopt a electro-hydraulic control system, the role of electronically controlled solenoid valves occupies an important position and it is essential to predict solenoid transient characteristics in order to design and evaluate the performance of the hydraulic control system. However, in general, both the magnetic and electrical parameters f the solenoid system are hardly known and it is not easy to model this section with moderate complexity although mechanical system could be developed using the classical second order system. This paper presents a dynamic modelling technique of a solenoid valve, that is controlled by pulse width modulation for an automatic transmission, in terms of system identification theory. In nonlinear computer simulation, it is shown that the identified systems which produce magnetic force to input duty cycle for various excitation signals predict the static and dynamic performance very well near the operating point and in experiment conducted to confirm the validity of identification theory for PWM solenoid valve, we find that there is a good agreement between the experimental data and simulation result. Hence, this model can be utilized in the development of pressure control system with PWM solenoid valve.

  • A second-moment closure is applied to the prediction of a homogeneous turbulent shear flow laden with mono-size particles. The closure is curried out based on a 'two-fluid' methodology in which both carrier and dispersed phases are considered in the Eulerian frame. To reduce the number of coupled differential equations to be solved, Reynolds stress transport equations and algebraic stress models are judiciously combined to obtain the Reynolds stress of carrier and dispersed phases in the mean momentum equation. That is, the Reynolds stress components for carrier and dispersed phases are solved by modelled transport equations, but the fluid-particle velocity covariance tensors are treated by the algebraic models. The present predictions for all the components of Reynolds stresses are compared to the DNS data. Reasonable agreements are observed in all the components, and the effects of the coupling of carrier and dispersed phases are properly captured in every aspects.

  • A numerical experiment is made in order to clarify the mechanism of the upwelling phenomenon along the coast near the poleward edge of the western boundary current. The possibility of the upwelling is suggested from the analysis of the observational data in the east of Honshu, Japan, and in the south eastern coast of Korean Peninsula. This upwelling phenomenon is very deep and can be traced to the bottom layer. The upwelling phenomenon seems to be a general oceanic feature which characterizes the region along the west coast near the poleward edge of the western boundary current. This experiment is simulating the oceanic condition of the transition region between Kuroshio front and the Oyashio front in the east of Honshu, Japan. The possible explanations of the causes of the upwelling are as follows; In the interior of the modeled ocean the cold heavy water supplied from the north and the warm light water from the south make the north-south gradient of the pressure field and accelerate the eastward current to produce the h-orizontal divergence feld near the west coast. The divergence is compensated by the upwelling near the separation region. Another one is that the upwell-ed cold water strengthen constantly the pressure gradient which is balanced by the northward current and is weakened by the horizontal diffusion.

  • Electricity is transmitted by transmission lines from the source of production to the distribution system and then to the end users. Failure of a transmission line can lead to devastating economic losses and to negative social consequences resulting from the interruption of electricity. A comprehensive in-house numerical model that combines the data of computational fluid dynamic simulations of tornado wind fields with three dimensional nonlinear structural analysis modelling of the transmission lines (conductors and ground-wire) is used in the current study. Many codes of practice recommend neglecting the tornado forces acting on the conductors and ground-wires because of the complexity in predicting the conductors' response to such loads. As such, real transmission line systems are numerically simulated and then analyzed with and without the inclusion of the lines to assess the effect of tornado loads acting on conductors on the overall response of transmission towers. In addition, the behaviour of the conductors under the most critical tornado configuration is described. The sensitivity of the lines' behaviour to the magnitude of tornado loading, the level of initial sag, the insulator's length, and lines self-weight is investigated. Based on the current study results, a recommendation is made to consider conductors and ground-wires in the analysis and design of transmission towers under the effect of tornado wind loads.
