  • Customer retention is a common concern for many industries and a critical issue for the survival in today's greatly compressed marketplace. Current customer retention models only focus on detection of potential defectors based on the likelihood of defection by using demographic and customer profile information. In this paper, we propose a dynamic procedure for defection detection and prevention using past and current customer behavior by utilizing SOM and Markov chain. The basic idea originates from the observation that a customer has a tendency to change his behavior (i.e. trim-out his usage volumes) before his eventual withdrawal. This gradual pulling out process offers the company the opportunity to detect the defection signals. With this approach, we have two significant benefits compared with existing defection detection studies. First, our procedure can predict when the potential defectors could withdraw and this feature helps to give marketing managers ample lead-time for preparing defection prevention plans. The second benefit is that our approach can provide a procedure for not only defection detection but also defection prevention, which could suggest the desirable behavior state for the next period so as to lower the likelihood of defection. We applied our dynamic procedure for defection detection and prevention to the online gaming industry. Our suggested procedure could predict potential defectors without deterioration of prediction accuracy compared to that of the MLP neural network and DT.

  • The results from the analysis of recent security breach cases of industrial control systems revealed that most of them were caused by the employees of a partner company who had been managing the control system. For this reason, the majority of the current company security management systems have been developed focusing on their performances. Despite such effort, many hacking attempts against a major company, public institution or financial institution are still attempted by the partner company or outsourced employees. Thus, the institutions or organizations that manage Industrial Control Systems (ICSs) associated with major national infrastructures involving traffic, water resources, energy, etc. are putting emphasis on their security management as the role of those partners is increasingly becoming important as outsourcing security task has become a common practice. However, in reality, it is also a fact that this is the point where security is most vulnerable and various security management plans have been continuously studied and proposed. A system that enhances the security level of a partner company with a Virtual Desktop Infrastructure (VDI) has been developed in this study through research on the past performances of partner companies stationed at various types of industrial control infrastructures and its performance outcomes were statistically compiled to propose an appropriate model for the current ICSs by comparing vulnerabilities, measures taken and their results before and after adopting the VDI.

  • With the enactment of the "Framework Act on Carbon Neutrality and Green Growth to Cope with Climate Crisis," various sector-specific plans are being implemented to achieve carbon neutrality. School facilities are mandatory buildings for the "Zero Energy Building Certification" and are the buildings that account for the highest proportion among public institution buildings. Therefore, they play a major role in achieving carbon neutrality in the construction sector. This study analyzed the recent energy use trends and zero energy levels in varied ways to promote the spread of building energy management systems and to provide basic data for efficient operation management and investigated the effectiveness and user opinions of the Building Energy Management System (BEMS) applied to school facilities.

  • Best management practices (BMPs) are widely accepted and implemented as a mitigation method for soil erosion and non-point source problems. Estimating the amount of soil erosion and the effectiveness of BMPs using hydrological models help to understand the condition, identify the problems, and make plans for conservation practices in an area, typically a watershed. However, the accuracy and reliability of assessment of BMP impacts estimated by hydrological models can be often questionable due to the uncertainties from various sources including GIS(Geographic Information System) data, scale, and model. This study reviewed the development and the background of hydrological models, and the modeling issues such as the selection of models, scale, and uncertainties of data and models. This study also discussed the advantage of a small scale and spatially distributed model to estimate the impacts of BMPs.

  • According to increasing number of injury claims, the challenge is reducing investigation of cases of injuries by selecting them more delicately, while also increasing the redemption rates and the amount of restitution. In this regards, we developed the fraud detection model for injury claims of self-employed insured by using decision tree after collecting medical claim data from 2006 to 2011 of the National Health Insurance in Korea. As a result of this model, subject types were classified into 18 types. If applying these types to the actual survey compared with if not applying, the redumption collecting rate will be increasing by 12.8%. Also, the effectiveness of this model will be maximize when the number of claims handlers considering their survey volume and management plans are examined thoroughly.

  • This study was conducted to determine the geographical distribution and habitat for Rana catesbeiana and Trachemys scripta elegans in order to obtain the current basic data on biota needed for establishing a database on non-indigenous species(NIS) in Jeju-do and to develop management plans applicable to Jeju, starting from March 2005 until May 2006. As a result of an inspection, it was found that the habitat for R. catesbeiana in Jeju includes Hankyeong-myeon, Daejeong-eup, and Ahndeok-myeon. These areas are all located on the western side of Jeju-do, and considered to have favorable conditions for R. catesbeiana to inhabit. Thus, it is unlikely that the population of R. catesbeiana will possibly decrease; what's worse, there exists even a risk that it could not only expand to other regions but also do damage to the population of native insecta, fishes, amphibians and reptiles, so this terrible species ought to be exterminated. More than 92 individuals of T. scripta elegans species were found to inhabit in 15 ponds around Jeju Island. T. scripta elegans. as the topmost predator, could destruct the pond ecosystem, and also cause a problem of water pollution due to its excrement. Counter-measures against T. scripta elegans could include publicity activities encouraging self-control of the release of captive T. scripta elegans, extermination plans using its ecological habits, and sign-posting publicizing its hazard to healthy ecosystem at the areas with high population density of T. scripta elegans or at its habitats with high foot traffic, together with the continuous management of NIS(none-indigenous species).

  • Rapid population growth and land use changes have severely degraded streams across the United States. In response, there has been a surge in the number of stream restoration projects, including stream restoration for mitigation purposes. Currently, most projects do not include evaluation and monitoring, which are critical in the success of stream restoration projects. The goal of this study is to review the current status of assessment methodologies and restoration approaches for streams in Virginia, with the aim of assisting the restoration community in making sound decisions. As part of the study, stream restoration projects data from a project in Fairfax County, Virginia was assessed. This review revealed that the stream assessment methodologies currently applied to restoration are visuallybased and do not include biological data collection and/or a method to incorporate watershed information. It was found from the case study that out of the twenty nine restoration projects that had occurred between 1995 and 2003 in Fairfax County, nineteen projects reported bank stabilization as a goal or the only goal, indicating an emphasis on a single physical component rather than on the overall ecological integrity of streams. It also turned out that only seven projects conducted any level of monitoring as part of the restoration, confirming the lack of evaluation and monitoring. However, Fairfax County has recently improved its stream restoration practices by developing and incorporating watershed management plans. This now provides one of the better cases that might be looked upon by stakeholders when planning future stream restoration projects.
