Performance Improvements of Handover in Mobile-IP Protocol for Mobile Computing (이동 컴퓨팅을 위한 Mobile-IP 프로토콜에서의 핸드오버 성능개선)

  • In this paper, we analyzed mobile-IP protocol of IETF, and propose new method to improve performance in handover environments. In proposed method, cache agent manages mobility binding information for mobile host. Thus, effective support of mobility is possible. Also, when handover occurs, mobile host recognizes change of foreign agent, and transmits registration message to new foreign agent. However, during registration time, data packet loss is occurs in old foreign agent. Thus, we prevent data loss by using data packet buffering and forwarding in old foreign agent.According to simulation results for data packet transmission performance in the case of handover occurring, proposed method has better performance than previous method in the view of transmission delay and throughput. Especially, if handover occurs very often, data buffering and forwarding method in foreign agent could guarantee better performance.

  • 본 논문은 방대한 크기의 볼륨 데이타를 효율적으로 렌더링하기 위한 셀 기반 웨이브릿 압축 방법을 제시한다. 이 방법은 볼륨을 작은 크기의 셀로 나누고, 셀 단위로 웨이브릿 변환을 한 다음 복원 순서에 따른 런-길이(run-length) 인코딩을 수행하여 높은 압축율과 빠른 복원을 제공한다. 또한 최근 복원 정보를 캐쉬 자료 구조에 효율적으로 저장하여 복원 시간을 단축시키고, 에러 임계치의 정규화로 비정규화된 웨이브릿 압축보다 빠른 속도로 정규화된 압축과 같은 고화질의 이미지를 생성하였다. 본 연구의 성능을 평가하기 위하여 {{}} 해상도의 볼륨 데이타를 압축하여 쉬어-? 분해(shear-warp factorization) 알고리즘에 적용한 결과, 손상이 거의 없는 상태로 약 27:1의 압축율이 얻어졌고, 약 3초의 렌더링 시간이 걸렸다.Abstract This paper presents an efficient cell-based wavelet compression method of large volume data. Volume data is divided into individual cell of {{}} voxels, and then wavelet transform is applied to each cell. The transformed cell is run-length encoded according to the reconstruction order resulting in a fairly good compression ratio and fast reconstruction. A cache structure is used to speed up the process of reconstruction and a threshold normalization scheme is presented to produce a higher quality rendered image. We have combined our compression method with shear-warp factorization, which is an accelerated volume rendering algorithm. Experimental results show the space requirement to be about 27:1 and the rendering time to be about 3 seconds for {{}} data sets while preserving the quality of an image as like as using original data.

  • Although the reuse of the cached data for scrolling the map reduces the amount of passed data between client and server, it needs the conversions of data coordinates, selective deletion of objects and cache compaction at client. The conversion is time intensive operation due to limited resources of mobile phones such as low computing power, small memory. Therefore, for the efficient map control in the vector map service based mobile phone, it is necessary to study the method for reducing wireless network bandwidth and for overwhelming the limited resources of mobile phone as well. This paper proposes the methods for caching pre-received spatial objects in client-server systems for mobile GIS. We also analyze the strengths and drawbacks between the reuse of cached data and transmission of raw data respectively.

PMS : Prefetching Strategy for Multi-level Storage System (PMS : 다단계 저장장치를 고려한 효율적인 선반입 정책)

  • The multi-level storage architecture has been widely adopted in servers and data centers. However, while prefetching has been shown as a crucial technique to exploit sequentiality in accesses common for such systems and hide the increasing relative cost of disk I/O, existing multi-level storage studies have focused mostly on cache replacement strategies. In this paper, we show that prefetching algorithms designed for single-level systems may have their limitations magnified when applied to multi-level systems. Overly conservative prefetching will not be able to effectively use the lower-level cache space, while overly aggressive prefetching will be compounded across levels and generate large amounts of wasted prefetch. We design and implement a hierarchy-aware lower-level prefetching strategy called PMS(Prefetching strategy for Multi-level Storage system) that applicable to any upper level prefetching algorithms. PMS does not require any application hints, a priori knowledge from the application or modification to the va interface. Instead, it monitors the upper-level access patterns as well as the lower-level cache status, and dynamically adjusts the aggressiveness of the lower-level prefetching activities. We evaluated the PMS through extensive simulation studies using a verified multi-level storage simulator, an accurate disk simulator, and access traces with different access patterns. Our results indicate that PMS dynamically controls aggressiveness of lower-level prefetching in reaction to multiple system and workload parameters, improving the overall system performance in all 32 test cases. Working with four well-known existing prefetching algorithms adopted in real systems, PMS obtains an improvement of up to 35% for the average request response time, with an average improvement of 16.56% over all cases.

A Proposal for a Femto-Cell Local Gateway and Packet Off-Loading for Remote Shipyards (원격 조선소의 펨토셀 로컬 게이트웨이 구성과 패킷 오프로드 방식 제안)

  • In shipyard site, a ship is constructed by integrating lots of modules that are made in several sites with different capabilities and specifications. Recently, it needs to make a shipyard to be smart with wired and wireless broadband networks between hierarchical shipyards. In this paper, we propose an installation of LTE femtocell local gateway at a remote shipyard, an information exchange method between hierarchical shipyards, and an offload method to separate the general traffic. We define the mode change in a femtocell gateway for supporting the offload of the general traffic between the headquarter and a remote shipyard, the offload data management and trigger message, and cache entry fields. To show the operation of our proposed off-loading function, we consider the transcipient message flow at the femtocell gateway with its state transition diagram. Hence, it is expected to increase the productivity of shipyard industry with mobile communications and broadband Internet technologies.

Energy Conservation of RAID by Exploiting SSD Cache (SSD 캐시를 이용한 RAID의 에너지 절감 기법)

  • Energy conservation of server systems has become important. Though storage subsystem is one of the biggest power consumers, development of energy conservation techniques is challenging problem due to striping techniques like RAID and physical characteristics of hard disks. According to our observation, the size of footprint for a day or for hours is much smaller compared to the size of whole data set. In this paper, we describe a design of a novel architecture for RAID that uses an SSD as a large cache to conserve energy by holding such a footprint. We incorporate these approaches into a real implementation of a RAID 5 system that consists of four hard disks and an SSD in a Linux environment. Our preliminary results in actual performance measurements using the cello99 and SPC traces show that energy consumption is reduced by a maximum of 14%.

  • Current rendering processors are organized mainly to process a triangle as fast as possible and recently parallel 3D rendering processors, which can process multiple triangles in parallel with multiple rasterizers, begin to appear. For high performance in processing triangles, it is desirable for each rasterizer have its own local pixel cache. However, the consistency problem may occur in accessing the data at the same address simulaneously by more than one rasterizer. In this paper, we propose a parallel rendering processor architecture resolving such consistency problem effectively. Moreover, the proposed architecture reduces the latency due to a pixel cache miss significantly. The experimental results show that proposed architecture achieves almost linear speedup at best case even in sixteen rasterizer

  • NAND type Flash memory has performing much researches for a hard disk substitution due to its low power consumption, cheap prices and a large storage. Especially, the NAND type flash memory is using general buffer systems of a cache memory for improving overall system performance, but this has shown a tendency to emphasize in terms of data. So, our research is to design a high performance instruction NAND type flash memory structure by using a buffer system. The proposed buffer system in a NAND flash memory consists of two parts, i.e., a fully associative temporal buffer for branch instruction and a fully associative spatial buffer for spatial locality. The spatial buffer with a large fetching size turns out to be effective serial instructions, and the temporal buffer with a small fetching size can achieve effective branch instructions. According to the simulation results, we can reduce average miss ratios by around 77% and the average memory access time can achieve a similar performance compared with the 2-way, victim and fully associative buffer with two or four sizes.

  • Optimistic Two-Phase Locking(O2PL) performs as well as or better than the other approaches because it exploits client caching well and also has relatively lower network bandwidth requirements. However, O2PL leads to unnecessary waits, because, it can not be commit a transaction until the transaction obtains all requested locks. In addition, Optimistic Concurrency Control(OCC) tends to make needless aborts. This paper suggests an efficient optimistic cache consistency protocol that overcomes such shortcomings. Our scheme decides whether to commit or abort a transaction without wait and it adopts transaction re-ordering in order to minimize the abort rate. Our scheme needs only one version for each data item in spite of the re-ordering mechanism used. Finally, this paper presents a simulation-based analysis that shows superiority in performance of out scheme to O2PL and OCC.

  • In HMIPv6, the nested mobile network because of the mobility of node and router can be constituted. Many subnets exist and many mobile router(MR)s and mobile node(MN)s activate in the nested mobile network. If the nested depth is deeper, the number of mobile router that packet goes through, increases and data transmission delay owing to this might be larger. This paper proposes EPA algorithm which finds out the path from Mobility Anchor Point(MAP) to a destination mobile node using the binding cache information of MAP and processes the path information by adding it to packet header. If we apply EAP algorithm, the quantity of unnecessary packet within MAP domain can be decreased. Also, the transmission delay can be decreased in a intermediate mobile router because it supports packet re-transmission just by simple packet substitution.
