  • Up to now, Most studies of hydroelasticity are about frequency domain analysis. Those aren't suited for analysis of the landing take-off, and dropping of aircraft on a structure. So, the concern of this paper is the transient behavior of a VLFS subjected to dynamic load, induced by airplane landing and take-off. To predict the added mass, damping coefficient, and wave exciting force, the source-dipole distribution method was used in the frequency domain. The responses are accomplished by using the FEM scheme. A time domain analysis method is based on the Newmark β method to pursue the time step procedure, taking advantage of memory effect function for hydrodynamic effects.

  • This paper presents an investigation about superharmonic and subharmonic resonances of a carbon nanotube reinforced composite beam subjected to lateral harmonic load with damping effect based on the modified couple stress theory. As reinforcing phase, three different types of single walled carbon nanotubes (CNTs) distribution are considered through the thickness in polymeric matrix. The governing nonlinear dynamic equation is derived based on the von Kármán nonlinearity with using of Hamilton's principle. The Galerkin's decomposition technique is utilized to discretize the governing nonlinear partial differential equation to nonlinear ordinary differential equation and then is solved by using of multiple time scale method. Effects of different patterns of reinforcement, volume fraction, excitation force and the length scale parameter on the frequency-response curves of the carbon nanotube reinforced composite beam are investigated. The results show that volume fraction and the distribution of CNTs play an important role on superharmonic and subharmonic resonances of the carbon nanotube reinforced composite beams.

  • Due to the fact that the nonlinear low-velocity impact response of graphene platelets reinforced metal foams (GPLRMF) doubly curved shells have not been investigated in the existing works, this paper aims to solve this issue. Using Reddy's high-order shear deformation theory (HSDT), the nonlinear governing equations of GPLRMF doubly curved shells are obtained by Euler-Lagrange method, discretized by Galerkin principle, and solved by the fourth-order Runge-Kutta method to obtain the impact force and central deflection. The nonlinear Hertz contact law is applied to determine the contact force. Finally, the impacts of graphene platelets (GPLs) distribution pattern, porosity distribution form, porosity coefficient, damping coefficient, impact parameters (radius and initial velocity), GPLs weight fraction, pre-stressing force and different shell types on the low-velocity impact curves are analyzed. It can be found that, among the four shell structures, the impact resistance of spherical shell is the best, while that of cylindrical shell is the worst.

  • Sinusoidal shear deformation theory (SSDT) is developed here for dynamic buckling of functionally graded (FG) nano-plates. The material properties of plate are assumed to vary according to power law distribution of the volume fraction of the constituents. In order to present a realistic model, the structural damping of nano-structure is considered using Kelvin-Voigt model. The surrounding elastic medium is modeled with a novel foundation namely as orthotropic visco-Pasternak medium. Size effects are incorporated based on Eringen'n nonlocal theory. Equations of motion are derived from the Hamilton's principle. The differential quadrature method (DQM) in conjunction with Bolotin method is applied for obtaining the dynamic instability region (DIR). The detailed parametric study is conducted, focusing on the combined effects of the nonlocal parameter, orthotropic visco-Pasternak foundation, power index of FG plate, structural damping and boundary conditions on the dynamic instability of system. The results are compared with those of first order shear deformation theory and higher-order shear deformation theory. It can be concluded that the proposed theory is accurate and efficient in predicting the dynamic buckling responses of system.

  • Series of recent k-.epsilon. model modification have been carried out with the aid of DNS data to include the effect of near wall. Though these methods opened new way of turbulence modelings, newly developed turbulence models of its kind had yet shortcomings in prediction for the turbulent flows with various Reynolds numbers and various geometric conditions. As a remedy for these shortcomings, a new k-.epsilon. model proposed here by improving the dissipation rate equation and the damping function for eddy viscosity model. The new dissipation rate equation was modeled based on the energy spectrum and magnitude analysis. The damping function for eddy viscosity was also formulated on the ground of distribution of dissipation rate length scales near a wall and the DNS data. The new k-.epsilon. model was applied to the fully developed turbulent flows in a channel and a pipe with a wide range of Reynolds numbers. Prediction results showed that the present model represents properly the turbulence properties in all turbulent regions over a wide range of Reynolds numbers.

  • The hydrodynamic bearing is accepted in many rotating systems because it has a large load carrying capacity. But the anisotropic pressure distribution of the bearing can arise the unstable vibration phenomenon over a certain speed. The magnetic bearing is an active element so that the unstable phenomenon of the hydrodynamic bearing, which is induced by the anisotropic support pressure of the oil film, can be controlled if the control algorithm and the controller gains are chosen appropriately. In this study, we investigate the stabilization method of the hydrodynamic bearing system composing the hybrid bearing which is the single unit of hydrodynamic bearing and magnetic bearing. The load carrying conditions of the hybrid bearing is modelled by the sum of the stiffness and damping coefficients of the hydrodynamic and the magnetic bearings in each direction. The dynamics of the rotor is analyzed by the Finite Element Method and the stability limit is determined by the eigenvalues of the hybrid bearings and shaft system. The eigenvalue study of the system shows that the stability limit of the hybrid bearing is increased compared to that of the hydrodynamic bearing. A Small increment of the stiffness and damping coefficient of the hybrid bearings by the magnetic actuators can increase the stability limit of the system. In this paper we tried to show the design references of the hybrid bearings by using the nondimensional bearing parameters. The analysis results show the possibilities of the stability limit increment of the hydrodynamic bearing system by combining the magnetic bearing.

  • In this paper Statistical Energy Analysis has been considered to predict high frequency air borne interior noise. Dash panel Insulation is major part to reduce engine excitation noise. Transmission loss and absorption coefficient are considered to predict dash insulation performance. Transmission lose is derived from coupling loss factor and absorption coefficient is derived from internal damping loss factor. Material Biot properties were used to calculate each loss factors. Insulation geometry thickness distribution was hard to measure, so FeGate software was used to calculate thickness map from CAD drawing. Each predicted transmission losses between conventional insulation and light weight insulation were compared with SEA. Transmission loss measurement was performed to validate each prediction result, and it showed good correlation between prediction and measurement. Finally interior noise prediction was performed and result showed light weight insulation system can reduce 40% weight to keep similar performance with conventional insulation system, even though light weigh insulation system has lower sound transmission loss and higher absorption coefficient than conventional system.

  • This paper summarizes an experimental and analytical study on the seismic behavior of high strength reinforced concrete columns under cyclic loading. In total six cantilever columns with different sizes and concrete compressive strengths were tested. Three columns, small size, had a $325{\times}325$ mm cross section and the three other columns, medium size, were $520{\times}520$ mm. Concrete compressive strength was 80, 130 and 180 MPa. All specimens were designed in accordance with the Japanese design guidelines. The tests demonstrated that, for specimens made of 180 MPa concrete compressive strength, spalling of cover concrete was very brittle followed by a significant decrease in strength. Curvature was much important for the small size than for the medium size columns. Concrete compressive strength had no effect on the curvature distribution for a drift varying between -2% and +2%. However, it had an effect on the drift corresponding to the peak moment and on the equivalent viscous damping variation. Simple equations are proposed for 1) evaluating the concrete Young's modulus for high strength concrete and for 2) evaluating the moment-drift envelope curves for the medium size columns knowing that of the small size columns. Experimental moment-drift and axial strain-drift histories were well predicted using a fiber model developed by the authors.

  • Compared with a strong axial rigidity due to large intial tension, cable has a weak laterally flexural rigidity. A variety of dynamic loads such as traffic loads and wind loads etc. cause the cables to vibrate significantly and affect the mechanical properties and the performance of cables. Therefore, vibration reduction design is an urgent task to control the vibration of cable-supported bridges. Because a various kind of dampers have shown to reduce the amplitude and duration time of vibration of cable from measured date in field test, damper can be considered that it is effective device significantly to reduce the amplitude and duration time in vibration of cable. Vibration characteristics of cable can change according to manufacturing method and type of established form, and damper has been designed according to distribution of natural frequencies and vibration modes. In this study, numerical analysis is used to show the reduction effects of vibrations and present the design of damper for vibration reduction of cable.

  • In this study, on-site testing was carried out to investigate the vibration serviceability of a composite steel-bar truss slab with steel girder system. Impulse excitations (heel-drop and jumping) and steady-state motion (walking and running) were performed to capture the primary vibration parameters (natural frequency and damping ratio) and distribution of peak acceleration. The composite floor possesses low frequency (<8.3Hz) and damping ratio (<2.47%). Based on experimental, theoretical, and numerical analyses on fundamental natural frequency, the boundary condition of SCSS (i.e., three edges simply supported and one edge clamped) is deemed more comparable substitutive for the investigated composite floor. Walking and running excitations by one person (single excitation) were considered to evaluate the vibration serviceability of the composite floor. The measured acceleration results show a satisfactory vibration perceptibility. For design convenience and safety, a crest factor βrp describing the ratio of peak acceleration to root-mean-square acceleration induced from the walking and running excitations is proposed. The comparisons of the modal parameters determined by walking and running tests reveal the interaction effect between the human excitation and the composite floor.
