Comparison of the Cytoprotective Effects of Several Natural and Synthetic Compounds against Oxidative Stress in Human Retinal Pigment Epithelial Cells (인간 망막 색소상피 세포에서 산화적 스트레스에 대한 천연 및 합성 화합물들의 세포 보호 효과 비교)

  • Oxidative stress causes injury to and degeneration of retinal pigment epithelial (RPE) cells. It is involved in several retinal disorders and leads to vision loss. In the present study, we investigated the effect of 14 kinds of natural compounds and two kinds of synthetic compounds on oxidative stress-induced cellular damage in human PRE cell lines (ARPE-19). From among them, we selected five kinds of compounds, including auranofin, FK-509, hemistepsin A, honokiol, and spermidine, which have inhibitory effects against hydrogen peroxide (H2O2)-mediated cytotoxicity. In addition, we found that four kinds of compounds (excluding auranofin) have protective effects on H2O2-induced mitochondrial dysfunction. Furthermore, the expression of phosphorylation of histone H2AX, a sensitive marker of DNA damage, was markedly up-regulated by H2O2, whereas it was notably down-regulated by FK-506, honokiol, and spermidine treatment. Meanwhile, five kinds of candidate compounds had no effect on H2O2-induced intracellular reactive oxygen species (ROS) levels, suggesting that the five candidate compounds have protective effects on oxidative stress-induced cellular damage through the ROS-independent pathway. Taken together, according to the results of H2O2-mediated cellular damage―such as cytotoxicity, apoptosis, mitochondrial dysfunction, and DNA damage―spermidine and FK-506 are the natural and synthetic compounds with the most protective effects against oxidative stress in RPE. Although further studies on the identification of the mechanism responsible are required, the results of the present study suggest the possibility of using spermidine and FK-506 to suppress the risk of retinal disorders.

A Study of the Change Method of Korean Resident Registration Number (주민등록번호 변경 방법에 대한 연구)

  • The Korean resident registration number has been used since 1962 as a personal identification number. The Korean government assigns this number to each korean citizen and it is not able to be changed. In 2000s, as the Internet was rapidly spreaded out, personal information such as the Korean resident registration number, name, home address, and phone number was leaked. The companies provide diverse internet service while collecting personal information. However, personal information was sometimes leaked because of hacking, poor information management and so on. As s results, some of citizens asked government and court of Korea to change the Korean resident registration number because they suffered material damage and emotional distress. The constitutional court decided to be able to change the number from 2018. In this study, the Korean resident registration number which is possible to change, serial number, public certificate, I-PIN, and My-PIN were analyzed comparatively. In addition, considerations when the Korean resident registration number was changed were discussed. The public certificate and I-PIN were appropriate to the case of on-line Korean resident registration number. The Korean resident registration number, serial number, My-PIN were appropriate to the case of off-line Korean resident registration number. Lastly, it would be efficient to manage the Korean resident registration number separately such as on-line and off-line.

  • In order to identify the bacteria living on the cocoons in Korea, the isolated bacterias' morphological. cultural and physiological characters has been determined through the detailed study. The second aim of this experiment was to protect against the bacteria which damage silk protein during storage. 1. The twelve strains of the bacteria were isolated and identified in the cocoons produced in Korea. The results of the identification are as the following.   • Oxidative stress is caused by an imbalance in the redox status of the body. In such a state, increase of free radicals in the body can lead to tissue damage. One of the most important species of free radicals is reactive oxygen species (ROS) produced by various metabolic pathways, including aerobic metabolism in the mitochondrial respiratory chain. It plays a critical role in the initiation and progression of various types of cancers. ROS affects different signaling pathways, including growth factors and mitogenic pathways, and controls many cellular processes, including cell proliferation, and thus stimulates the uncontrolled growth of cells which encourages the development of tumors and begins the process of carcinogenesis. Increased oxidative stress caused by reactive species can reduce the body's antioxidant defense against angiogenesis and metastasis in cancer cells. These processes are main factors in the development of cancer. Bimolecular reactions cause free radicals in which create such compounds as malondialdehyde (MDA) and hydroxyguanosine. These substances can be used as indicators of cancer. In this review, free radicals as oxidizing agents, antioxidants as the immune system, and the role of oxidative stress in cancer, particularly breast cancer, have been investigated in the hope that better identification of the factors involved in the occurrence and spread of cancer will improve the identification of treatment goals.

  • In the coming age of information warfare, information security patterns take on a more offensive than defensive stance. It is necessary to develop an active form of offensive approach to security protection in order to guard vital information infrastructures and thwart hackers. Information security products need to support an automatic response facility without human intervention in order to minimize damage to the attacked system and cope with the intrusion immediately. This paper presents an automatic intrusion response model which is developed on a Self-Extension Monitoring. It also proposes an ARTEMIS(Advanced Realtime Emergency Management and Intruder Identification System), which is designed and implemented based on the suggested model. The Self-Extension Monitoring using self-protection and replication minimizes spatial limitations on collection of monitoring information and intruder tracing. It enhances the accuracy of intrusion detection and tracing.

  • It is notorious that PIN(Personal Identification Number) is used widely for user verification and authentication in networked environment. But, when the user Identification and password are exposed by hacking, we can be damaged monetary damage as well as invasion of privacy. In this paper, we adopt face recognition-based authentication which have nothing to worry what the ID and password will be exposed. Also, we suggest the remote authentication and verification system by considering not only 2-Tier system but also 3-Tier system getting be distributed. In this research, we analyze the face feature data using the SVM(Support Vector Machine) and PCA(Principle Component Analysis), and implement artificial intelligence face recognition module in distributed environment which increase the authentication speed and heightens accuracy by utilizing artificial intelligence techniques.

  • In this study, flood analysis was conducted to prepare for damage caused by typhoons and heavy rain due to abnormal climate and climate change. Two - dimensional flooding analysis using the FLUMEN model, which is widely used for national and international flood risk mapping, was conducted for the Nam River Basin, which is the tributary of the Nakdong River. This study divides the topography into $5m{\times}5m$ DEM by ArcView, so that the accuracy of river repair and hydrological characterization and flood area identification can be maximized. As a result of simulation of water flooding, 163.3ha in section 1, 227.7ha in section 2 and 59.9ha in section 3 were simulated.

Serological Investigation of Virus Diseases of Pepper Plant (Capsicum annum L.) in Korea (혈청학적 방법에 의한 고추의 바이러스병 감염상 조사)

  • A total of 163 virus infected pepper plants(Capsicum annuum L.) collected from various pepper growing regions in Korea were investigated on the presence of tobacco mosaic virus (TMV), cucumber mosaic virus (CMV), potato virus X(PVX), potato virus Y(PVY) and alfalfa mosaic virus (AMV) by serological methods. Van Slogteren's microprecipitin test was applied for the testing of TMV, PVX and PVY from infected plants, and Ouchterlony agar double diffusion test was used for CMV and AMV. Results obtained are as follows: 1. TMV, CMV, PVX, PVY and AMV were found to occur on the pepper plants growing in Korea. 2. The prevalence of each of these viruses among the 163 pepper plants investigated was in the order of CMV: 93 plants(57.0%)>TMV: 91 plants (55.8%)>AMV: 58 plants (35.6%)>PVY: 40 plants (24.5%)> PVX:6 plants(3.7%). 3. Among the 163 plants investigated, 72 plants (44%) showed infection with one kind of virus and 91 plants (56%) showed mixed infection with more than two different viruses. In general, heavier damage of the plants was observed from mixed infection. 4. The results of serological identification of pepper viruses coincided with those results obtained by sap inoculation experiment conducted at the Horticultural Experiment Station along with present investigation. Thus the serological techniques applied in this experiment proved to be very reliable for the identification of TMV, CMV, PVX, PVY and AMV from pepper plants infected with these viruses.

Structural identification of concrete arch dams by ambient vibration tests

  • Modal testing, widely accepted and applied method for determining the dynamic characteristics of structures for operational conditions, uses known or unknown vibrations in structures. The method's common applications includes estimation of dynamic characteristics and also damage detection and monitoring of structural performance. In this study, the structural identification of concrete arch dams is determined using ambient vibration tests which is one of the modal testing methods. For the purpose, several ambient vibration tests are conducted to an arch dam. Sensitive accelerometers were placed on the different points of the crest and a gallery of the dam, and signals are collected for the process. Enhanced Frequency Domain Decomposition technique is used for the extraction of natural frequencies, mode shapes and damping ratios. A total of eight natural frequencies are attained by experimentally for each test setup, which ranges between 0-12 Hz. The results obtained from each ambient vibration tests are presented and compared with each other in detail. There is a good agreement between the results for all measurements. However, the theoretical fundamental frequency of Berke Arch Dam is a little different from the experimental.
