Comparison of Exposure Estimates Using Consumer Exposure Assessment Models and the Korean Exposure Algorithm (국내외 소비자 제품 노출평가모델을 이용한 노출량 비교)

  • Background: Exposure assessment is an important part of risk assessment for consumer products. Exposure models are used when estimating consumer exposures by considering exposure routes, subjects, and circumstances. These models differ based on their tiers, types, and target populations. Consequently, exposure estimates may vary between models. Objectives: This study aimed to compare the results of different exposure models using identical exposure factors. Methods: Chemical exposure from consumer products was calculated using four consumer exposure assessment models: Targeted Risk Assessment 3.1, Consumer Exposure Model 2.1 (CEM), ConsExpo web 1.1.1, and the Korean Exposure Algorithm (primary and detailed) issued by the Ministry of Environment, No. 972 (MOE). The same exposure factors were used in each model to calculate inhalation and dermal exposures to acetaldehyde, d-limonene, and naphthalene in all-purpose cleaners, leather coating sprays, and sealants. Results: In the results, TRA provided the highest estimate. Generally, MOE (detailed), CEM and ConsExpo showed lower exposures. The inhalation exposure for leather coating spray showed the largest differences between models, with differences reaching up to 1.2×107 times. Since identical inputs were used for the calculations, it is likely that the models significantly influenced the estimated results. Conclusions: Despite using the same exposure factors to calculate dermal and inhalation exposures, the results varied substantially based on the model's exposure algorithm. Therefore, selecting an exposure model for assessing consumer products should be done with careful consideration.

  • The mechanical properties of heat-compressed Radiata pine (Pinus radiata D.Don) by compression set were investigated. Heat-compression condition was temperature at $180^{\circ}C$ and press time for 60 minutes. The mechanical properties of heat-compressed wood increased with increasing compression set. Increase of the specific gravity has led to increase in mechanical properties. The maximum compression set of Radiata pine was investigated approximately 65%. It was almost same result with porosity 68% of Radiata pine in specific gravity 0.48.

  • The content of benzo[a]pyrene from 69 smoked meat products commonly consumed in Korean food market was analysed with high performance liquid chromatography. Smoked meat products including smoked chicken, pork, turkey and duck were saponified, extracted and cleaned up to analyze the benzo[a]pyrene content. As a result of analysis from smoked meat products, the mean benzo[a]pyrene content was 0.42 ${\mu}g$/kg and the highest content of benzo[a]pyrene was 2.87 ${\mu}g$/kg detected in smoked chicken product. All somked meat products contained benzo[a]pyrene below the limit regulated by Korean Food and Drug Administration (KFDA). Exposure assessment of benzo[a]pyrene from smoked meat products ingestion was calculated by using National Health and Nutrition Survey (NHNS). The estimated lifetime average daily intake of benzo[a]pyrene was 0.187 ng/kg bw/d. Margin of exposure of benzo[a]pyrene was ranged from 1,657,754 to 3,957,219.

  • The mechanical properties of heat-compressed Radiata pine (Pinus radiata D.Don) by compression temperature and time were investigated. The compressive strength and bending strength of heat-compressed wood increased with increasing compression temperature and time. But the compressive strength and bending strength decreased with press temperature $220^{\circ}C$. It was considered due to thermal degradation during high temperature conditions. The surface hardness of heat-compressed wood increased with increasing compression temperature. However, the effect of compression time was negligible. The nail holding power was not affected by compression temperature and time.

  • Layout Criteria are developed for an access mode's on and off facility at multiple transfer centers in this paper. Layout Criteria are location issues between a main mode and access modes in terms of the on and off facility one another. The total distance between them has been suggested to be minimized. In the distance calculation stairs are considered to be more difficult and than open space. On the other hand an escalator and an elevator are treated as easier than open space. Considering the number of people between on and off facility, the weighted average distance is suggested to be a MOE(Measure of effectiveness) for layout criteria at multiple transfer centers. Finally, the layout criteria are applied to the existing Kimpo airport terminal and some improvement ideas are suggested.

  • In this paper the effect of bedding layer on the failure mechanism of rock in direct shear test has been investigated using particle flow code, PFC. For this purpose, firstly calibration of pfc2d was performed using Brazilian tensile strength. Secondly direct shear test consisting bedding layer was simulated numerically. Thickness of layers was 10 mm and rock bridge length was 10 mm, 40 mm and 60 mm. In each rock bridge length, bedding layer angles changes from $0^{\circ}$ to $90^{\circ}$ with increment of $15^{\circ}$. Totally 21 models were simulated and tested. The results show that two types of cracks develop within the model. Shear cracks and tensile cracks. Also failure pattern is affected by bridge length while shear strength is controlled by failure pattern. It's to be noted that bedding layer has not any effect on the failure pattern because the layer interface strength is too high.

  • 합판(合板)에 내화약제(耐火藥劑) 가압법(加壓法)에 의하여 약 1,588kg/$(30cm)^3$(3.5lbs/$ft^3$)을 주입시켜 내화합판(耐火合板)을 제조(製造)한 후(後), 이들 합판(合板)의 합수율(含水率)을 6%로 유지하면서, 기간은 0, 21, 60, 160 및 215일 동안 온도를 $26.6^{\circ}C(80^{\circ}F)$에 14 시간, $65^{\circ}C(150^{\circ}F)$에서 7시간, $26.6^{\circ}C$로 내리는데 1시간, $65^{\circ}C$로 올리는데 2시간씩으로 순환시켜, 내화처리합판(耐火處理合板)과 무처리합판(無處理合板)의 기계적 성질에 미치는 영향을 조사 비교 하였다. MOE는 내화처리합판(耐火處理合板)과 무처리합판(無處理合板) 사이에 유의성이 없었고, MOR에 있어서 내화처리합판(耐火處理合板)은 무처리합판(無處理合板)에 비하여 15~20% 감소하였고, WML에 있어서 내화처리합판(耐火處理合板)과 무처리합판(無處理合板)사이에 유의성이 있었으며, 두 내화처리합판(耐火處理合板) 사이에도 시간에 따라 유의성이 인정되었다. 따라서 WML은 내화처리합판(耐火處理合板)의 기계적 성질을 구명하는데 좋은 기준이 될 것으로 사료된다.

Online Publication System of Academic Research Paper:From the Viewpoint of Digital Goods in Case of Social Science Field (디지털상품 관점의 연구성과물 온라인 공표제도 - 사회과학 분야 학술연구성과를 중심으로 -)

  • It is high time to prepare the online publication system of academic research paper. Online publications like digital research paper, e-Book, etc. are increased day by day as the information technology(IT) is developing continually. But, the legal aspect of publication system of academic research paper in Korea is not prepared yet. The purposes of this study are to examine the problems on the publication system of academic research paper in the context of digital goods and to frame a policy of legal proceedings in relation to the social science. The methodology used in this paper is theoretical analysis which is examining the case of academic research system and scientific journal in Korea. As a result of this study, following measures are suggested: (1) Legal provisions on the online publication system, that is, "Research Promotion Law of Korea" controlled by KRF(Korea Research Foundation) and MOE(Ministry of Education) should be revised. (2) Solution like software program and DB system proceeding the data on academic research paper should be prepared newly. (3) From the viewpoint of digital goods, both protecting the intellectual property right and settling the reliance upon online publication system should also be considered simultaneously.

300-W-class Side-pumped Solar Laser

  • To realize uniform side pumping of solar lasers and improve their output power, a solar concentrating system based on off-axis parabolic mirrors is proposed. Four identical off-axis parabolic mirrors with focal length of 1,000 mm are toroidally arranged as the primary concentrator. Four two-dimensional compound parabolic concentrators (2D-CPCs) are designed as a secondary concentrator to further compress the focused spot induced by the parabolic mirrors, and the focused light is then homogenized by four rectangular diffusers and provides uniform pumping for a laser-crystal rod to achieve solar laser emission. Simulation results show that the solar power received by the laser rod, uniformity of the light spot, and output power of the solar laser are 7,872.7 W, 98%, and 351.8 W respectively. This uniform pumping configuration and concentrator design thus provide a new means for developing high-power side-pumped solid-state solar lasers.

Studies on Manufacturing Wood Particle-Polypropylene Fiber Composite Board

  • For finding both ways of recycling the wood and plastic wastes and solving the problem of free formaldehyde gas emission through manufacturing wood particle-polypropylene fiber composite board without addition of formaldehyde-based thermosetting resin adhesive, control particleboards and nonwoven web composite boards from wood particle and polypropylene fiber formulation of 50 : 50, 60 : 40, and 70 : 30 were manufactured at density levels of 0.5, 0.6, 0.7, and 0.8 g/$cm^3$, and were tested both in the physical and mechanical properties according to ASTM D 1037-93. In the physical properties, control particleboard had significantly higher moisture content than composite board. In composite board, moisture content decreased with the increase of target density only in the board with higher content of polypropylene fiber and also appeared to increase with the increase of wood particle content at a given target density. Control particleboard showed significantly greater water absorption than composite board and its water absorption decreased with the increase of target density. In composite board, water absorption decreased with the increase of target density at a given formulation but increased with the increase of wood particle content at a given target density. After 2 and 24 hours immersion, control particleboard was significantly higher in thickness swelling than composite board and its thickness swelling increased with the increase of target density. In composite board, thickness swelling did not vary significantly with the target density at a given formulation but its thickness swelling increased as wood particle content increased at a given target density. Static bending MOR and MOE under dry and wet conditions increased with the increase of target density at a given formulation of wood particle and polypropylene fiber. Especially, the MOR and MOE under wet condition were considerably larger in composite board than in control particleboard. In general, composite board showed superior bending strength properties to control particleboard, And the composite board made from wood particle and polypropylene fiber formulation of 50 : 50 at target density of 0.8 g/$cm^3$ exhibited the greatest bending strength properties. Though problems in uniform mixing and strong binding of wood particle with polypropylene fiber are unavoidable due to their extremely different shape and polarity, wood particle-polypropylene fiber composite boards with higher performance, as a potential substitute for the commercial particleboards, could be made just by controlling processing variables.
