  • ER mount can be used instead of rubber mount in cylindrical shell to improve the vibration and noise performance. The noise radiated by cylindrical shell will be reduced by reducing the force transmitted to the cylindrical shell through ER mount. In this paper LQ control theory is used to reduce the transmitted force to the cylindrical shell. The finite element method of cylindrical shell is formulated by NASTRAN and its vibrating shape is calculated in frequency domain. The noise radiated from the cylindrical shell is calculated by the use of SYSNOISE, the boundary element CAE tool. The vibration of the cylindrical shell and radiated acoustic pressure is compared in case of both controlled and uncontrolled ER mount.

  • Bi-stable structure can be stable in both its extended and coiled forms. For the un-stressed thin cylindrical shell, the strain energy expressions are deduced by using a theoretical model in terms of only two parameters. Based on the principle of minimum potential energy, the bi-stable behaviors of the cylindrical shells are investigated. The results indicate that the isotropic cylindrical shell does not have the second stable configuration and laminated cylindrical shells with symmetric or antisymmetric layup of fibers have the second stable state under some confined conditions. In the case of antisymmetric laminated cylindrical shell, the analytical expressions of the stability are derived based on the extremal principle, and the shell can achieve a compact coiled configuration without twist deformation in its second stable state. In the case of symmetric laminated cylindrical shell, the explicit solutions for the stability conditions cannot be deduced. Numerical results show that stable configuration of symmetric shell is difficult to achieve and symmetric shell has twist deformation in its second stable form. In addition, the roll-up radii of the antisymmetric laminated cylindrical shells are calculated using the finite element package ABAQUS. The results show that the value of the roll-up radii is larger from FE simulation than from theoretical analysis. By and large, the predicted roll-up radii of the cylindrical shells using ABAQUS agree well with the theoretical results.

  • In this paper, buckling conditions and retrofitting of cylindrical steel water storage tanks with different roof types and wall thicknesses were investigated by using finite element method. Four roof types of cylindrical steel tanks which are open-top, flat-closed, conical-closed and torispherical-closed and three wall thicknesses of 4, 6 and 8 mm were considered in FE modeling of cylindrical steel tanks. The roof shapes significantly affect load distribution on the tank shell under the seismic action. Composite FRP materials are widely used for winding thin-walled cylindrical steel structures. The retrofitting efficiency of cylindrical steel water tank is tested under the seismic loading with the externally bonded CFRP laminates. In retrofitting of cylindrical steel tank, the CFRP composite material coating method was used to improve of seismic performance of cylindrical steel tanks. ANSYS software was used to analyze the cylindrical steel tanks and maximum equivalent (von-Mises) and directional deformation were obtained. Equivalent (von-Mises) stresses significantly decreased due to the coating of the tank shell with FRP composite material. In thin-walled steel structures, excessive stress causes buckling and deformations. Therefore, retrofitting led to decrease in stress, reductions in directional and buckling deformation of the open-top, flat-closed, conical-closed and torispherical-closed tanks.

  • We propose a new shape of cylindrical shell formed by multiples vaults which gives a self-stiffening against buckling. By an experimental and numerical study of cylindrical shells with a repeated defect, on the circumferential direction made only of outside oriented wave-defects, we show that multiple vault cylindrical shells can have a good behaviour in buckling. An optimal behaviour is obtained by optimization of the vaults number, with conduces to a special multiple vault cylindrical shell named "ASTER shell".

  • This paper is a study on the experiment and elasto-plastic discrete limit analysis of reinforced concrete circular cylindrical shell by the rigid-bodies spring model. In the rigid bodies-spring model, each collapsed part or piece of structures at the limiting state of loading is assumed to behave like rigid bodies. The present author propose new discrete elements for elasto-plastic analysis of cylindrical shell structures, that is, a rectangular-shaped cylindrical element and a rhombus-shaped cylindrical element for the improvement and expansion of this rigid-bodies spring model. In this study, it is proposed how this rigid element-bodies spring model can be applied to the elasto-plastic discrete limit analysis of cylindrical shell structures. Some numerical results of elasto-plastic discrete limit analysis and experimental results such as the curve of load-displacement and the yielding and fracturing pattern of circular cylindrical shell under horizontal load are shown.

  • Taking the cylindrical float of the floating fence of a floating litter collection device as the research object, based on the shallow immersion characteristics of the cylindrical float, the Morison equation is modified, and the interaction between regular waves and the partially immersed horizontal cylindrical float is discussed in combination with scale model test. The results show that the modified Morison equation can accurately predict the wave force of the horizontal cylindrical float and reveal the influence of amplitude, immersion depth and period on the wave force of the cylindrical float. For partially immersed cylindrical floats, the wave force increases with the increase in wave height and decays with the increase in period. The positive value distribution of the wave force is larger than that of the negative direction, and the difference between the positive and negative directions is mainly affected by the immersion depth.

  • Five extended cylindrical reticulated shells are proposed by changing distribution rule of diagonal rods based on three fundamental types. Modeling programs for fundamental types and extended types of cylindrical reticulated shell are compiled by using the ANSYS Parametric Design Language (APDL). On this basis, conditional formulas are derived when the grid shape of cylindrical reticulated shells is equilateral triangle. Internal force analysis of cylindrical reticulated shells is carried out. The variation and distribution regularities of maximum displacement and stress are studied. A shape optimization program is proposed by adopting the sequence two-stage algorithm (RDQA) in FORTRAN environment based on the characteristics of cylindrical reticulated shells and the ideas of discrete variable optimization design. Shape optimization is achieved by considering the objective function of the minimum total steel consumption, global and locality constraints. The shape optimization for three fundamental types and five extended types is calculated with the span of 30 m~80 m and rise-span ratio of 1/7~1/3. The variations of the total steel consumption along with the span and rise-span ratio are analyzed with contrast to the results of shape optimization. The optimal combination of main design parameters for five extended cylindrical reticulated shells is investigated. The total steel consumption affected by distribution rule of diagonal rods is discussed. The results show that: (1) Parametric modeling method is simple, efficient and practical, which can quickly generate different types of cylindrical reticulated shells. (2) The mechanical properties of five extended cylindrical reticulated shells are better than their fundamental types. (3) The total steel consumption of cylindrical reticulated shells is optimized to be the least when rise-span ratio is 1/6. (4) The extended type of three-way grid cylindrical reticulated shell should be preferentially adopted in practical engineering. (5) The grid shape of reticulated shells should be designed to equilateral triangle as much as possible because of its reasonable stress and the lowest total steel consumption.

  • This work present the experimental resutls for the free vibration of unstiffened, stiffened cylindrical shell filled with air, half water and full water. The natural frequencies and mode shapes of unstiffened, stiffened cylindrical shell are obtained experimentally also. The natural frequencies of stiffened cylindrical shell were generally highter than those of unstiffened cylindrical shell and natural requencies were decreased as cylindrical shell was filled with water. The effect of circumferential stiffener in the first mode was shown that natural frequency more increased 25% at air environment, 29% at half water environment and 37% at full water than those of unstiffened cylindrical shell, respectively. Also, the natural frequencies were decreased according to the added mass effect of fluid in the shell of unstiffened and stiffened cylindrical shell. The six mode shape results of all cases are simular and given. The natural frequencies are determined for a wide range of parameters : e.g. unstiffened shell, and filled with air, half and full water. The effects of varying the parameters on the free vibration frequencies and mode shapes are discussed.
