An analysis of the non-homogeneous term involved in the free surface condition for second order wave diffraction on a pair of cylinders is presented. In the computations of the nonlinear loads on offshore structures, the most challenging task is the computation of the free surface integral. The main contribution to this integrand is due to the non-homogeneous term present in the free surface condition for second order scattered potential. In this paper, the free surface condition for the second order scattered potential is derived. Under the assumption of large spacing between the two cylinders, waves scattered by one cylinder may be replaced in the vicinity of the other cylinder by equivalent plane waves together with non-planner correction terms. Then solving a complex matrix equation, the first order scattered potential is derived and since the free surface term for second order scattered potential can be expressed in terms of the first order potentials, the free surface term can be obtained using the knowledge of first order potentials only.
The radiation problem for an oscillating cylinder advancing under the free surface with a constant horizontal velocity is studied using the Green integral equation in the frequency domain. The Green function expressed in terms of the complex exponential, is derived using the damped free surface condition. Special attention is given to the behavior of the numerical solution in the vicinity of the critical Brard number ${\gamma}_c=\omega{\cdot}u/g=0.25$ where $\omega$ is the circular frequency of encounter, u the advancing speed and g the gravitational acceleration. It is shown that the solution is finite in the vicinity of ${\gamma}_c$ although the Green function becomes singular at ${\gamma}_c$. It is also shown that the computed hydrodynamic coefficients agree well with those obtained from the solution of the same problem formulated in the time domain.
This paper provides approximate J estimates for off-centred, circumferential through-wall cracks in cylinders under bending and under combined tension and bending. The proposed method is based on the reference stress approach, where the dependence of elastic and plastic influence functions of J on the cylinder/crack geometry, the off-centred angle and strain hardening is minimised through the use of a proper normalising load. Based on published limited FE results for off-centred, circumferential through-wall cracks under bending, such normalising load is found, based on which the reference stress based J estimates are proposed for more general cases, such as for a different cylinder geometry and for combined loading. Comparison of the estimated J with extensive FE J results shows overall good agreements for different crack/cylinder geometries and for combined tension and bending, which provides sufficient confidence in the use of the proposed method to fracture mechanics analyses of off-centred circumferential cracks. Furthermore, the proposed method is simple to use, giving significant merits in practice.

Due to the tendency to use high speed pneumatic cylinders to improve productivity, cushioning devices are adopted to decelerate the piston motion of pneumatic cylinders to reduce noise, vibration, and impact. This paper presents a comparison of the cushion characteristics of a high speed pneumatic cylinder with a relief valve type cushioning device. The system parameters selected are the damping coefficient, Coulomb friction, heat transfer coefficient, and cracking pressure of the relief valve in the air cushioning device. The integral of the time multiplied square error (ITSE) is used to quantitative measure the cushioning performance to assess the effect of varying these. The cushioning performance achieved good results when the ITSE is a minimum value. In a comparison of the piston displacement and velocity with the variations in system parameters, the heat transfer coefficients are not as significantly affected as the other. Also, the cracking pressure of the relief valve is mainly affected by the pressure and temperature in the cushion chamber.
We solve the integral representation of the Navier-Stokes equations in a lagrangian view by tracking the particles, which have vortex strengths. We simulate the unsteady viscous flow around an impulsively started cylinder using the vortex particle method. Particles are advanced via the Biot-Savart law for a lagrangian evolution of particles. The particle strength is modified based on the scheme of particle strength exchange. The solid boundary satisfies the no-slip boundary condition by the vorticity generation algorithm. We newly modify the diffusion scheme and the boundary condition for simulating an unsteady flow efficiently. To save the computation time, we propose the mixed scheme of particle strength exchange and core expansion. We also use a lot of panels to ignore the curvature of the cylinder, and not to solve the evaluation of the surface density. Results are compared to those from other theoretical and experimental works.
In this paper, constraint-based fracture mechanics analyses of hollow cylinders with internal circumferential crack under tensile loading are conducted. Finite element analyses of the cracked cylinders are carried out to determine the fracture parameters including elastic T-stresses, and fully-plastic J-integrals. Linear elastic finite element analysis is conducted to obtain the T-stresses, and elastic-plastic analysis is conducted to obtain the fully plastic J-integrals. A wide range of cylinder geometries are studied, with cylinder radius ratios of $r_i/r_o$ = 0.2 to 0.8 and crack depth ratio a/t = 0.2 to 0.8. Fully plastic J-integrals are obtained for Ramberg-Osgood power law hardening material of n = 3, 5 and 10. These fracture parameters are then used to construct conventional and constraint-based failure assessment diagrams (FADs) to determine the maximum load carrying capacity of cracked cylinders. It is demonstrated that these tensile loaded cylinders with circumferential cracks are under low constraint conditions, and the load carrying capacity are higher when the low constraint effects are properly accounted for, using constraint-based FADs, comparing to the predictions from the conventional FADs.
In this paper we first investigate the existence of the generalized Fourier-Feynman transform of the functional F given by $$F(x)={\hat{\nu}}((e_1,x)^{\sim},{\ldots},(e_n,x)^{\sim})$$, where $(e,x)^{\sim}$ denotes the Paley-Wiener-Zygmund stochastic integral with $x$ in a very general function space $C_{a,b}[0,T]$ and $\hat{\nu}$ is the Fourier transform of complex measure ${\nu}$ on $B({\mathbb{R}}^n)$ with finite total variation. We then define two sequential transforms. Finally, we establish that the one is to identify the generalized Fourier-Feynman transform and the another transform acts like an inverse generalized Fourier-Feynman transform.
To develop the code of predicting flow-field and aeroacoustic noise by an electrical cable, a combined CFD-Acoustic analogy approach is selected. The two dimensional, unsteady and incompressible Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes solver with κ-ω and κ-ω SST turbulence modeling is used to calculate the near flow-field around an electric cable. Near-field results are then coupled with two-dimensional Curle's integral formulation based upon Lighthill's acoustic analogy with the assumption of acoustic compactness. To validate this code, numerical results are compared with experimental data for a circular cylinder. The simulation shows an overprediction on acoustic amplitudes, but overally speaking, the spectrum pattern of sound pressure agrees well with experiment within an acceptable amount of error. In addition, a few cross-sections of the cable were selected and tested with each other in terms of drag and radiated noise
