  • This study was conducted to evaluate the effect of cigarette papers, flax and wood, on the delivery of mainstream smoke. The main components of cigarette papers were cellulose, hemicellulose, lignin, and pectin. Lignin contents, known as precursor of smoke's phenolic compounds, of the flax and wood cigarette papers were 5.8% and 10.6%, respectively. The pyrolysis products of cigarette papers were similar by the profile of total ion chromatogram. But, the area % of some components, such as 1,3-cyclopentanedione, 3,5- dimethyl cyclopentane-1,2-dione, 2-hydroxy-3-methyl-2-cyclopentenone, dihydro-2(3H)-furanone, 3-methyl-2(5H)-fruanone, and 5-methyl-2-furaldehyde delivered through pyrolysis of the flax cigarette paper were higher than that of wood cigarette paper. Otherwise, the area % of some components, such as 2-methyl-cyclopentene-l-one), 2,3-butanedione, 2-cyclopentene-l-one, and 5-hydroxy-2-methyl-furaldehyde, 2-furaldehyde delivered through pyrolvsis of the wood cigarette paper were higher than that of flax cigarette paper. To identify the difference between two cigarette papers, we used the cigarette column filled with the cut cigarette paper instead of the cut tobacco leaf. The amounts of semi-volatile fraction delivered from flax cigarette paper was more than that of wood cigarette paper. But, by using the cut tobacco, there was no big difference of delivery amount between flax and wood cigarette papers. Also, aroma of TPM by collecting from brening cut tobacco wrapped in flax and wood papers showed a different pattern by the electonic nose system. Although the difference between two cigarette papers by using the cut tobacco was smaller than that of cut cigarette paper, this result indicated that the fax and wood had the different effects on the delivery of smoke components as shown in the sensory test results.

  • This study was conducted to determine the acid and phenol compounds in smoke total particulate matter(TPM) by the different tobacco variety, and grade of tobacco leaves. Sixteen kinds of tobacco leaves which were flue-curd, burley, orient, reconstituted tobacco, expanded stem, and expanded cut tobacco, were selected for this study. After collecting a TPM by using smoking machine, the concentration of TPM components was analyzed by GC. Acid components of TPM of mainstream smoke were different from the variety and grade. The order of the highest concentration of acid compounds in TPM was flue-cured > orient> burley> expanded cut tobacco> reconstituted tobacco> expanded stem. Though lactic acid and glycolic acid concentrations in flue-cured tobacco were twice higher than those in burley tobacco, the contents of 2-furoic acid and 3,4-dihydroxy butanoic acid in burley tobacco were higher than those in flue-cured tobacco. The content of phenolic compounds in the high grade and thick leaves was higher than that in other tobacco leaves. Phenol and catechol compounds in burley CD3W-2 revealed the least value in concentration among the samples tested. Pyrocatechol and hydroquinone concentrations in flue-cured tobacco were 2-3 times higher than those in burley and orient tobacco.

  • Cigarettes were prepared using cut tobacco blends containing 5 levels of expanded tobacco. The effect of expanded tobacco content and tobacco weight on the draw resistance, tar, nicotine, static burning rate, net weight, and carbon monoxide deliveries were examined. At the specified hardness, tar, and tricot me significantly decreased with increasing expanded tobacco rates as a consequence of the increasing cigarette draw resistance. In the view of the experts, the smoke analysis of the cigarettes containing the expanded tobacco was investigated.

  • This study was carried out to predict blending ratio of cut tobacco(CT), expanded stem(ES), and expanded cut tobacco(ECT) in cigarettes. CT, ES, and ECT samples from A brand were, ground and blended with reference to A blending ratio, and scanned by near infrared spectroscopy(NIRSystem Co., Model 6500). Calibration equations were developed and then determined blending ratio by NIRS. The standard error of calibration(SEC) and performance(SEP) of C factory samples between NIRS and known blending ratio were 0.97%, 1.93% for CT, 0.50%, 1.12 % for ES and 0.68%, 1.10% for ECT, respectively. The SEP of CT, ES and ECT of Band D factory samples determined by C factory calibration equation were more inaccurate than those of C factory samples determined by C factory calibration equations. These results were caused by the difference of CT, ES and ECT spectra followed by each factory. The SEP of CT, ES and ECT of Band D factories determined by calibration equations derived from each factory samples were more accurate than those of determined by calibration equation derived from C factory samples. Each factory SEP of CT, ES and ECT determined by calibration equation derived from all calibration samples(B+C+D factory) was similar to that determined by calibration equation derived from each factory samples. To improve the analytical inaccuracy caused by spectra difference, we need to apply a specific calibration equation for each factory sample. Data in development of specific calibrations between sample and NIRS spectra might supply a method for rapid determination of blending ratio of CT, ES, and ECT.

  • In this study, the effects of the relative humidity and storage time of blended tobaccos at total blending silo on cut tobacco equilibrium moisture contents, leaf moisture contents and migration of casing materials of tobacco types were investigated. To maintain the cutting moisture content(21 $\pm$ 1 %), it is necessary to keep 75 % relative humidity at 28 $^{\circ}C$ at total blending silo. The moisture content of reconstituted tobacco sheet was changed from $13{\sim}14$ % to $19{\sim}21$ % within 2 h after preblending. The contents of glycerin and fructose of tobacco types followed by storage time after preblending were not changed significantly. From these results, it is suggested that 2 h storage time after preblending was sufficient to maintain physical properties of cut tobaccos and tobacco taste and fragrance.

  • This study was conducted to determine the changes of nitrogen compounds in lamina and midrib during the curing process with the different curing methods, such as priming and stalk-cut curing. After KB 108 burley tobacco was cultivated by the different fetilization levels such as standard and 20% higher, only the tips and leaf were harvested. Though the contents of total alkaloid and total nitrogen were similar in lamina, midrib showed a very low contents of those components by the different curing method and fertilization levels. The content of nitrate-nitrogen in lamina increased during a middle of curing process, and then these compound was decreased during an end of curing process by stalk-cut curing method. Nitrate-nitrogen contents in the lamina by the priming curing showed a high level caused by rapid drying process during an end of curing process. That component in midrib was 5-6 times higher than that of lamina. The contents of ammonia-nitrogen in the lamina and midrib were increased during a curing process. Though those amount in tips showed a similar by a different fetilization and curing method, midrib of stalk-cut curing showed a slow increasing during a curing process.

  • The expansive properties of leaf tobacco by nitrogen gas was investigated with cut tobacco AB3O-1, CD3L-1(NC82). Major factors for the best expansion of the tobacco by the gas were an impregnated pressure and expansion temperature. The expansion rate for AB3O-1 and CD3L-1 at 250℃, 750kg/cm2 was 96.6%, 99.4% respectively. The shred size and fineness index at 96.6% of expansion rate for AB3O-1 was almost the same as at 58.3% for CD3L-1. The time reaching at equilibrium moisture under of RH 57% was 36hr in non-treated leaf tobacco, but it was 20hr in expanded tobacco. We confirmed that total sugar contents of leaf tobacco by the expansion was decreased with 9.3∼10.9%. Total alkaloid was decreased with 17.5∼21.1% and ether extracts was declined with 4.9∼9.3%. These results suggest that the expansion method of leaf tobacco by nitrogen gas is a useful method without any serious environmental troubles. Key words : expansion, nitrogen gas, heat treatment, tobacco.

  • The green peach aphid was relatively the majority(36.9-72.3% ) among all alate aphids collected from tobacco plants. Density of glatae was relatively lower on varieties Tl 1112 and Br 21 than on Va 115 or Y S A among seven varieties tested. However, no considerable difference was observed in general biology of nymphs produced by alatae on the tobacco varieties. About 55% of alate green peach aphid collected from tobacco fields produced progency, and over 80% of the nymphs became adults on cut tobacco leaves in petri dish. Adult longevity of both alate and apteral green peach aphid was shorter, and numbers of nymphs produced by both types were lower in summer than in autumn. Apterae produced more nymphs than alatae, but the longevity of apterae was shorter.

  • Tobacco stalks were cut and removed from the field after harvest, and urea was treated by placing it on the cutting portions of the remaining tobacco stumps. Relative virus infectivity of the root residue(compared to the fresh root residue infected with TMV) was reduced to 14.6% in December, 1993(before overwintering) and to 8.5% in March, 1994 just before transplanting, indicating that the TMV infectivity decreased remarkably, but was preserved still in the root residue in the field soil. There was no significant difference in infectivity of remaining root tissue between the treated and untreated root residue. However, as roots with urea treatment had been extensively decayed, only about one - fifth of the initial root volume remained after overwintering. TMV occurred less (by one - third) in the urea treatment than in the control, suggesting that urea treatment effectively provented tobacco from TMV infection by reducing the inoculum potential.

  • This study was carried out to investigate relationship between contents of moisture and chemical components in burley tobacco after heat treatment. Initial moisture contents of burley tobacco was 32% after cutting and casing. Burely cut tobaccos were treated at various temperature(10$0^{\circ}C$, 13$0^{\circ}C$, 145$^{\circ}C$ and 16$0^{\circ}C$) and time(0, 5, 10, 15, 20 and 30 min) in mechanical convection oven. Moisture contents of burley tobacco after heat treatment were in the range of 1.9% to 18.4%. Relationship between moisture contents and total sugar, pH, total volatile base, ammonial, L value of color, nicotine, nornicotine, and $\beta$-nicotyrine contents were positively correlated. Correlation between moisture contents and crude ash, ether extracts, 2,6-deoxyfructosazine, 2,5-deoxyfructosazine, a value of color, citric acid, m-xylene, ${\gamma}$-butyrolactone and 5-methyl-2-furfural were negative.
