  • We propose a new distance measure between 2-dimensional points to provide a total order for an entire point set and to reflect the correct geometric meaning of the naturalness of the point ordering. In general, there is no total order for 2-dimensional point sets, so curve reconstruction algorithms do not solve the self-intersection problem because the distance used in the previous methods is the Euclidean distance. A natural distance based on Brownian motion was previously proposed to solve the self-intersection problem. However, the distance reflects the wrong geometric meaning of the naturalness. In this paper, we correct the disadvantage of the natural distance by introducing a polar-natural distance, and we also propose a new curve reconstruction algorithm that is based on the polar-natural distance. Our experiments show that the new distance adequately reflects the correct geometric meaning, so non-simple curve reconstruction can be solved.

  • We present a method to reconstruct a canal surface from a point cloud (a set of unorganized points). A canal surface is defined as a swept surface of a moving sphere with varying radii. By using the shrinking and moving least-squares methods, we reduce a point cloud to a thin curve-like point set which can be approximated to the spine curve of a canal surface. The distance between a point in the thin point cloud and a corresponding point in the original point set represents the radius of the canal surface.

  • The problem of fitting B-spline curves to planar point clouds is studied in this paper. A novel method is proposed to deal with the most challenging case where multiple intersecting curves or curves with self-intersection are necessary for shape representation. A method based on Delauney Triangulation of data points is developed to identify connected components which is also capable of removing outliers. A skeleton representation is utilized to represent the topological structure which is further used to create a weighted graph for deciding the merging of curve segments. Different to existing approaches which utilize local shape information near intersections, our method considers shape characteristics of curve segments in a larger scope and is thus capable of giving more satisfactory results. By fitting each group of data points with a B-spline curve, we solve the problems of curve structure reconstruction from point clouds, as well as the vectorization of simple line drawing images by drawing lines reconstruction.

  • We propose a new algorithm for reconstructing curves with self-intersections from sample points. In general, the result of curve reconstruction depends on how to select and order the representative points to resemble the shape of sample points. Most of the previous point ordering approaches utilize the Euclidean distance to compute the proximity of sample points without directional information, so they can not solve the non-simple curve reconstruction problem. In this paper, we develop a new distance estimating the adjacency between sample points, which is derived from the standard normal distribution of Brownian motion. Experimental results show that this approach is very effective to non-simple curve reconstruction.

  • We consider a surface reconstruction problem from geometrical points (i.e., points given without any order) distributed on a series of smooth parallel cross sections in ${\mathbb{R}}^3$. To solve the problem, we utilize the natural points ordering method in ${\mathbb{R}}^2$, described in [18], which is a method of reconstructing a curve from a set of sample points and is based on the concept of diffusion motions of a small object from one point to the other point. With only the information of the positions of these geometrical points, we construct an acceptable surface consisting of triangular facets using a heuristic algorithm to link a pair of parallel cross-sections constructed via the natural points ordering method. We show numerical simulations for the proposed algorithm with some sets of sample points.

  • Purpose: The intracorporeal reconstruction after laparoscopic gastrectomy can minimize postoperative pain, and give better cosmetic effect, while it may have technical difficulties and require the learning curve. This study aimed to analyze the surgical outcome of intracorporeal reconstruction according to the surgeon's experience comparing with extracorporeal procedure. Materials and Methods: From January 2009 to September 2011, intracorporeal reconstruction in laparoscopic surgery for gastric cancer was performed for 71 patients (Intra group). During same period, 231 patients underwent laparoscopy-assisted gastrectomy (Extra group). These patients were classified into initial (1st to 20th case of intra group), intermediate (21th to 46th case), and experienced (after 47th case) phases. Results: Intracorporeal procedures included 35 cases of Billroth-I, 30 Billroth-II and 6 Roux en Y reconstructions. In the initial phase, operation time (P=0.022) were significantly longer for the patients of intra group than them of extra group. Although the difference was not significant, the length of hospital stay was longer and complication rate was higher in the intra group. In intermediate and experienced phases, there was no difference between two groups in operation time and hospital stay. In these phases, complication rate was lower in the intra group than the extra group (3.9% versus 9.7%). The pain scale was significantly lower post operation day 5 in the intra group. Conclusions: Intracorporeal reconstruction after laparoscopic distal gastrectomy was feasible and safe, and the technique was stabilized after 20th case if the surgeon has sufficient experiences when we compared it with extracorporeal reconstruction.

  • This paper proposes Snapping Shrimp Noise (SSN) detection and corrupted Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (OFDM) reconstruction methods to increase Bit Error Rate (BER) performance when OFDM transmitted signal is corrupted by impulsive SSNs in underwater acoustic communications. The proposed detection method utilizes multilayer wavelet packet decomposition for detecting impulsive and irregularly concentrated and SSN energy in specific frequency bands of SSN, and the proposed reconstruction scheme uses iterative decision directed-subcarrier reconstruction to recover corrupted OFDM signals using multiple carrier characteristics. Computer simulations were executed to show receiver operating characteristics curve for the detection performance and BER for the reconstruction. The practical ocean experiment of SAVEX 15 demonstrated that the proposed method exhibits a better detection performance compared with conventional detection method and improves BER by 250% and 1230% for uncoded and coded data, respectively, compared with the conventional reconstruction scheme.

  • In this paper, we propose and efficient curve reconstruction method based on the classical least-square fitting scheme. Specifically, given planar sample points equipped with normals, we reconstruct the objective curve as the zero set of a hierarchical implicit ZP(Zwart-Powell)-spline that can recover large holes of dataset without loosing the fine details. As regularizers, we adopted two: a Tikhonov regularizer to reduce the singularity of the linear system and a discrete Laplacian operator to smooth out the isocurves. Benchmark tests with quantitative measurements are done and our method shows much better quality than polynomial methods. Compared with the hierarchical bi-quadratic spline for datasets with holes, our method results in compatible quality but with less than 90% computational overhead.

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate an influence of the change of central panoramic curves on the image reconstruction in the dental implant CT. The author designed three experimental groups according to the location of central panoramic curve. In group A, central panoramic curve was determined as the curve connecting the center of roots from the first premolar to the first molar. In group B, central panoramic curve was determined as the line connecting the lingual cortical plate at the level of the mesial aspect of the first premolar with the buccal cortical plate at the level of the mesial aspect of the first molar. In Group C, central panoramic curve was determined as the line connecting the buccal cortical plate at the level of the mesial aspect of the first premolar with the lingual cortical plate at the level of the mesial aspect of the first molar. Twenty four reformatted CT images was acquired from four mandibles embedded in the resin block and twenty four contact radiographs of dog specimens were acquired. Each Image was processed under Adobe Photoshop program analysed by MSPA(mandible/maxilla shape pattern analysis) variables such as MXVD, MXHD, UHD, MHD, and LHD. The obtained results were as follows ; 1. The mean of MXVD variable was 19.9, 20.2, and 20.0 in group A, B, and C, respectively, which were smaller than actual value 20.5. But, there was no significant difference among 3 groups (p>0.05). 2. The mean of MXHD, UHD, MHD, and LHD variables in group A, B, and C was 11.9, 12.2, and 12.3; 9.3, 9.5, and 9.6; 10.0, 10.3, and 10.3; 9.2, 9.3, and 9.4 respectively which were equal to or greater than the actual value 11.8, 9.3, 10.0, and 9.2. But, there was no significant difference among 3 groups (p>0.05). 3. The number of noneffective observations with difference over or under 1 mm with comparison to the actual value was 24(20%), 58(48.3%), and 52(43.3%), respectively, in group A, B, and C. 4. In group A, the number of observations over 1 mm and under 1 mm was 9 and 15, respectively, but in group Band C, the number of observations over 1 mm was more than under 1 mm.
