  • The purposes of this study were to examine the current status of the establishment of home economics-related departments in colleges and universities and the changes required in the home economics curriculum of secondary schools, and to structure the elective courses of home economics subject(group) that can be organized in the next high school curriculum. To achieve these purposes, related literature and data were analyzed, and a questionnaire survey and FGI were conducted by home economics experts. The research results are as follows. First, home economics was considered to be highly related not only to the human ecology but also to social sciences, education, engineering, and arts and physical education. The numbers of technical colleges and 4-year universities with departments related to home economics were 1,405 and 961 respectively in 2019. Therefore, it was confirmed that there is a sufficient basis for opening home economics subject(group) elective courses in high school. Second, in the secondary school home economics curriculum, the concepts of culture, relations, independence, and sustainability were emphasized based on the changing life patterns and values. It was proposed that the contents of the home economics course would be structured in a way that allows deep and high-level thinking and helps students to enjoy culture. This demand can be implemented by diversifying, specializing, and structuring the elective courses of the home economics subject(group). Third, a total of 18 elective subjects and subject outlines were structured in the fields of child/family, food/nutrition, clothing, housing, consumption/family management, and home economics integration. This study results will contribute to the establishment of the high school credit system by providing basic information for organizing the next home economics curriculum, and expanding the options for home economics subject(group) to high school students.

  • This study aimed to identify ways to implement pre-parent education for adolescents in regular classes at school. This was achieved by investigating whether the contents of the 2015 revised curriculum high-school technology and home economics textbooks reflected the goals of pre-parent education. The main texts and activities of chapters with 'preparing for parenthood' in the title from 12 high-school technology and home economics education textbooks were analyzed with respect to the three pre-parent education goals of developing perceptions and attitudes toward parenthood, learning parenting knowledge and skills, and reinforcing parental capacity. The results were as follows. First, textbook contents and activities reflected the three goals of pre-parent education in a balanced manner. Second, both the contents and activities of textbooks tried to motivate students to perceive parenthood and parenting through reflection on their relationship with their own parents. Third, because the textbooks encouraged students to consider parenthood and parenting, they acknowledged the importance of undertaking pre-parent education to reinforce their parental capacities. Using such textbooks in regular technology and home economics classes is expected to provide students with an opportunity to consider parenthood and shape their perceptions and attitudes accordingly, thereby allowing adolescents to prepare themselves for parenthood and become good parents.

  • The aim of this study was to provide basic materials that would enable students who take courses in the subjects of technology and home economics to take the knowledge and technological skills they learn in the classroom and apply them to real life situations and to nurture their thinking power and creativity. To achieve these research objectives, a survey was conducted on 217 home economics teachers at 129 schools in the metropolitan area in order to assess their classroom operations and the adequacy of the curriculum regarding "clothes-making and reuse." The results showed that most of the schools surveyed have only one classroom for home economics and that a majority of them are cooking rooms. The most preferred place to practice making clothes was found to be the classroom. In addition, the use of teaching aids pertaining to clothes-making are lacking or in poor shape. Furthermore, analysis of the curriculum regarding "clothes-making and reuse" showed that most of the students use kits that contain materials for making clothes, due to a lack of practice hours. Most teachers thought that this section was appropriate for the school curriculum. In the more detailed categories, the students' ability to use sewing machines was the lowest, while the ability to sew by hand was selected as the most useful and most appropriate for real life situations.

  • The purpose of this study is to obtain a suggestion for writing, revising, and reorganizing for the current Korean Home Economics Textbook. To achieve this goal, the housing unit in the Home Economics curriculums from eight kinds of Japanese textbooks were analyzed. The subject of analysis was Technology Home Economics textbook Home Economics Part 2 volumes used in middle school 2009 and Home Economics Synthesis 6 volumes in high school. Contents of main text, terminology, reading material, tables and activities were analyzed. The suggestions of this analysis are as followings. First according to the increase of the level of school, if the field of housing is organized to be intensified systematically with relation to education, the goal of the subject would be clearly realized to the students. Thus, the middle school curriculum and textbook of housing field should be constructed with the consideration of education level according to the grade and the level of school. The method of intensive education in single point of time would result in low efficiency so the current curriculum should be re-considered. Second, perspective of resident, local community, terrain environment, housing culture should be included in housing education so that the learner may value the relationship between him and the society, think of the earth environment, succeed and advance the traditional culture. Third, the curriculum of the housing field should be organized with the consideration of understanding the level of middle, high school students. Middle school, with their student's low understanding, should include more experiential activity such as experiment and practice in their curriculum. On the other hand, curriculum which can enable student to research problems on their own and to apply them in their real life is required in high school course.

The form of items was analyzed by frequency and rate. Behavioral domain of items was analyzed by content analysis. In this study, some recommendations were suggested for the quality of home economics education items through discussion of science education and society education items, which were abstracted from the school year 2001 to the most recent year 2007. The results of this study were as follows. First, the score ratio of home economics education items was fluid as 20-30% from the school year 2001 to 2004 but it fixed as 30-35% since the school year 2005. In subcategory of home economics education, curriculum items accounted for highest ratio(43%). In the next thing, items of teaching-learning method(35%), evaluation(19%) and philosophy(3%) related to home economics education were followed in order. Second, the form of home economics education items was coexistent form of single item and subordinate item from the school year 2001 to 2004. But it was changed into form of single item by 100% since the school year 2005. Third, regarding the content of home economics education items, most of the curriculum items were related to the content of the 7th National Curriculum. Teaching-learning method items were taken mostly from model of teaching-learning. Evaluation items were taken mostly from performance assessment. Philosophy items related to home economics education were taken only from Habermas's three systems of action on the school year 2005. Fourth, about behavioral domain of home economics education items, most of the curriculum items were level of 'simple knowledge or memory'. Therefore, it was suggested that behavioral domain of curriculum items had to be changed into 'complex knowledge or comprehension and application'. The behavioral domain of teaching-learning method items and education evaluation items was mostly 'complex knowledge or comprehension and application'. However, to bettering the items it was suggested that the behavioral domain of them has to be changed 'comprehension' into more 'application'. Fifth, regarding the coverage of home economics education items, curriculum items were limited only superficial content of the 7th National Curriculum. Therefore, it was suggested that coverage of curriculum items had to be extended to theoretical content, which was philosophical background and various principles of curriculum. It was suggested that coverage of teaching-learning method items had to be extended to the content including various teaching-learning theories and the practical reasoning home economics instruction proved effective as home economics instruction recently. Evaluation items were taken mostly from performance assessment. Therefore, it was suggested that coverage of evaluation items had to be extended to analysis of evaluation result, item validity and reliability, and evaluator's philosophical perspective.
