  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effects of reminiscence therapy on depressive symptoms in older adults with dementia using a systematic review and meta-analysis. Methods: Randomized controlled trials (RCTs) published from January 2000 to January 2018 were searched through Research Information Sharing Service (RISS), Korean Studies Information Service System (KISS), Korean Medical Database (KMbase), KoreaMed, PubMed, Cochrane Library, Cumulative Index to Nursing and Allied Health Literature (CINAHL), and Ovid MEDLINE. Two researchers independently performed the search, selection, and coding. Comprehensive Meta-Analysis 3.0 was used for meta-analysis, and Review Manager program 5.3 was used for quality assessment. Results: Out of the 1,250 retrieved articles, 22 RCTs were selected for analysis. The overall effect size of reminiscence therapy for mitigating depressive symptoms in older adults with dementia was -0.62 (95% Cl: -0.92 to -0.31). The effect size was greater in older adults under 80, those with less disease severity, and those for whom the therapy session lasted less than 40 minutes. Conclusion: Reminiscence therapy is an effective non-pharmacological therapy to improve depressive symptoms in older adults with dementia. Because its effectiveness is also influenced by age, disease severity, and application method, it is necessary to consider treatment designs based on individual characteristics as well as methodological approaches.

  • This study investigated the effect of the strengthening efficiency of unbonded steel-bar truss system on the out-of-plane behavior of perforated masonry walls. Four full-scale unreinforced masonry (URM) walls with two different planes were prepared using the unbonded steel-bar truss system and a URM walls without strengthening. All masonry walls were tested under constant axial and cyclic lateral loads. The obtained test results indicated that the pinching effect in the out-plane behavior of masonry walls tends to decrease in the in- and out-of-plane strengthened URM walls using the unbonded steel-bar truss system with the higher prestressing force ratio (Rp) of vertical reinforcing bars in the unbonded steel-bar truss system, regardless of the perforated type of the masonry wall. Consequently, the highest maximum shear resistance and cumulative dissipated energy at peak load in the post-peak behavior were observed in the in- and out-plane strengthened URM walls with the highest Rp values, which are 2.7 and 6.0 times higher than those of URM. In particular, the strengthening efficiency of the unbonded steel-bar truss system was primarily attributed to the vertical prestressed steel-bars rather than the diagonal steel-bars, which indicates that the strains in the vertical prestressed steel-bars at the peak load were approximately 1.6 times higher than those in the diagonal steel-bars.

  • Purpose - This paper analyzes the effect of factors affecting the depression of immigrant labor by the exploratory multivariate model empirically. Design/Methodology/Approach - We review results of precedent studies theoretically and implement empirical study by using the questionnaire data of Myanmar male immigrant labor. Findings - As the result of empirical study, the factor affecting the depression of immigrant labor significantly at p<0.5 level are 'interpersonal trouble in company', 'unjust wage' and 'bottleneck to life'. Also 'unjust treatment' and 'anxiety(of health)' are affecting factors significantly at p<0.1. Research Implications - Managerial implications are as follow. Firstly, employers have to reduce 'interpersonal trouble in company', 'unjust wage' and 'unjust treatment'. Secondly, gonernment have to support to reduce 'bottleneck to life' and 'anxiety(of health)'. Academic implications are as follow. Firstly, factors that are studied exploratively have to be tested by systematic empirical study. Secondly, which of short-term, lagged or cumulative is the nature of the affecting effect and the reciprocal relationship between depression and factors affecting the depression has to be studied empirically.

  • In this study, quantitative analysis is attempted on data collected from Chilgapsan Observatory Star Park in Cheongyang-gun, Chungcheongnam-do. The aim of this experimental study in which quantitative analysis of the Astronomical Science Museum in Korea is conducted is to investigate its current situation and secure basic data. As of July 31, 2023, it has had 283,931 cumulative visitors in total. It had the largest number of visitors when it opened (2009 year), after which their number reduced steadily until the pandemic (COVID-19, 2020-2022). Recently, however, the number of visitors has increased. Generally, the number of visitors is highest in August (20.8%) and least in April (4.1%). The visit rate is higher on weekends (Saturday and Sunday) than on weekdays (Monday-Friday), and groups comprise only about 5.3% of the total number of visitors. Moreover, it can be confirmed that the number of visitors increases sharply during events. Finally, it was confirmed that the visit rate was unaffected by weather conditions. Considering these results, we propose the following strategies: 1) Establish a special program that reflects "the weekend effect." 2) Prepare a plan to attract group visitors during the weekdays using "the event effect." 3) Arrange alternative programs (e.g., experiential activities) that can be conducted indoors regardless of weather conditions. We think that our findings will help establish a roadmap for the direction the Astronomical Science Museum should take and aid in preparing a strategic foundation to preemptively respond to unexpected situations (e.g., pandemics).

  • The results of the research in M&A firms in the KOSDAQ market are as follows. First, the effect of the M&A disclosure at the time of disclosure was that the positive (+) cumulative abnormal return (CAR) can be interpreted as an increase in the value of the firm; however, in the long run, firms which used the KOSDAQ index and the control firm, which did not use the index were found to have conflicting results. Second, the findings show that the rise in value of general firms resulting from a M&A were higher that those of venture firms. Third, in testing the performance extrapolation hypothesis, it was shown that the performance of "value" firms (firms with a high B/M ratio but poor performance in the past) was better after a M&A than those of the "glamour" firms and that the performance extrapolation hypothesis was substantiated. Fourth, it can be construed that a size effect in a merger exists. The CAR of the small firms surpasses those of large firms. Fifth, in verifying operating performance, most variables showed a positive (+) value at the time of M&A but showed a negative (-) value after a M&A. These results show that because on the Korean KOSDAQ market, M&A are approached from a financial rather than an economic aspect, it can be inferred that it lowers the firms value.

  • [$^3$H]Ouabain binding parameters ( $K_{D}$ and $B_{max}$) to control rat ventricular strips and Langendorff preparations which were not previously exposed to ouabain were compared with those to both preparations that had been first exposed to a complete ouabain dose range of dose-response curve (10$^{-8}$ to 10$^{4}$M). In rat ventricular strips and Langendorff perfused heart preparations, cumulative dose-response curves of ouabain revealed biphasic positive inotropic effects, a "low-dose" effect and a "high-dose" effect with E $d_{50}$ values of 0.5 $\mu$M and 35 $\mu$M ouabain, respectively. The "low-dose" effect in ventricular strip disappeared or was diminished significantly when the ouabain dose-response curve was repeated after the washout of the effects of the first dose-response curve, whereas there were no significant differences in the maximal "high-dose"effect in both exposures to oubain. However, both of the control and ouabain-preexposed Langendorff perfused hearts revealed the same low-dose effects. The $K_{D}$ value for [$^3$H] ouabain binding and the ouabain binding site concentration ( $B_{max}$) estimated by [$^3$H]ouabain displacement assay in control preparations were 230 nM and 2 pmol/mg protein, respectively. [$^3$H]Ouabain binding parameters were not changed by repeated exposure to high concentrations of ouabain. These results suggest that digitalis receptor desensitization in the rat ventricular strip may due to the change of post-receptor events induced by ouabain binding to a high affinity site ($\alpha$$_2$isoform).).).).).

  • In order to reveal the independent relationship between track irregularity and wind loads, the stochastic characteristics of train-bridge coupling systems subjected to wind loads were investigated by the multi-sample calculation. The vehicle was selected as 23 degrees of freedom dynamical model, and the bridge was described by three-dimensional finite element model. It was assumed that the wind loads were random processes with strong spatial correlation, while the track irregularities were stationary random ones. As a case study, a high-speed train running on a cable-stayed bridge subjected to wind loads was studied. The effect of rail irregularities was deemed to be independent of the effect of wind excitations on the coupling system in the same wind circumstance for the same project, leading to the conclusion that the effect of wind loads and moving vehicle could be calculated separately. The variance results of the stochastic responses of vehicle-bridge coupling system under the action of wind loads and rail irregularities together were equivalent to the sum of the variance of the responses induced by each excitation. Therefore, when one of the input excitations is different, only the effect of changed loads needs to be assessed. Moreover, the new calculated results were combined with the effect of unchanged loads to present the stochastic response of coupling system subjected to the different excitations, reducing the cost of computations. The stochastic characteristics, the CFD (cumulative distribution function) of the coupling system with different wind velocities, vehicle speed, and vehicle marshalling were studied likewise.

  • Macrobenthos species-area relationship was investigated and empirical models were estimated to enable comparisons among species numbers of different sample size. The study aims to choose a way to predict cumulative relative species number (CRSN) in a given sample size Saemangeum, located in the west coast of South Korea, were visited in Apr., May and Aug.,2002 and a total of 261 biological samples from 87 stations were obtained by employing a quantitative sediment sampler, Smith-McIntyre grab and design of 3 replicates at each station. Relative species numbers (%) were baselined at sample size of 1000 $\textrm{cm}^2$ and the patterns of CRSN along the axis of sample size were measured and observed. In correlation analysis performed on a set of abiotic and biotic variables, log-transformed CRSN showed the only significant relationship with log-transformed density. Based on the result, three models, Log CRSN 2000, Log CRSN 3000 and Log CRSN were produced. The former two were devised to predict CRSN at 2000 and 3000 $\textrm{cm}^2$ respectively, and the latter at various sample sizes and samplers (all p-values were <0.001). Database from other studies (intertidal or subtidal macrofaunal samples from Kyonggi Bay and Saemangeum) were used to evaluate validity of the models. Observed CRSN below sample size of 3000 $\textrm{cm}^2$ fell under the range of 95% prediction interval and this was appeared to provide reliability of the models below that sample size.

  • In this study, we investigated public announcements of stock splits using the Korean Stock Market data from 2000 through 2007. The purposes of this study are to examine whether stock splits have the information contents in the Korean capital markets, and to investigate the possible cause of the market reactions. We measured the market reactions with abnormal returns, cumulative abnormal returns and cumulative average abnormal returns. For the purpose, two specific hypotheses were tested. One is 'Signalling Effects' where stock splits function as a signal through which managers transmit a favorable information for investors. The other is 'Liquidity Effects' where stock splits increase the trading convenience. We have th following results. Firstly, positive market effects were found when stock splits were announced. Secondly, there was difference in trading convenience between the high and the low split ratios. Finally, the long term performance through stock splits in the Korean capital markets was not significant.

  • Objectives : This study was conducted to integrate the results of studies assessing the association between chronic noise exposure and blood pressure. Methods : Using a MEDLINE search with noise exposure, blood pressure and hypertension as key words, we retrieved articles from the literature that were published from 1980 to December 1999. The criteria for quality evaluation were as follows: 1) the study subjects must have been workers employed at a high noise level area 2) The paper should use average and cumulative noise exposure as method for exposure evaluation. 3) Blood pressure in each article should be reported in a continuous scale Among the 77 retrieved articles, six studies were selected for quantitative meta-analysis. Before the integration of the regression coefficients for the association between blood pressure and noise level, homogeneity tests were conducted. Results : All studies were a cross-sectional design and the study subjects were industrial workers. Five papers used a time-weighted average for noise exposure and only one paper calculated the cumulative noise exposure level. The measurement of blood pressure in the majority of studios were accomplished in a resting stale, and used an average of two or more readings. The homogeneity of studies was rejected in a fixed effect model, so we used the results in a random effect model. The results of the quantitative meta-analysis, the weighted regression coefficient of noise associated with systolic blood pressure and diastolic blood pressure were 0.05 (95% confidence interval [CI]: -0.03, 0.13) and 0.06 (95% CI: -0.01, 0.13), respectively. Conclusions : Our results suggested that chronic exposure to industrial noise does not cause elevated blood pressure.
