Flow Near the Meniscus of a Pressure-Driven Water Slug in Microchannels

  • Micro-PIV system with a high speed CCD camera is used to measure the flow field near the advancing meniscus of a water slug in microchannels. Image shifting technique combined with meniscus detecting technique is proposed to measure the relative velocity of the liquid near the meniscus in a moving reference frame. The proposed method is applied to an advancing front of a slug in microchannels with rectangular cross section. In the case of hydrophilic channel, strong flow from the center to the side wall along the meniscus occurs, while in the case of the hydrophobic channel, the fluid flows in the opposite direction. Further, the velocity near the side wall is higher than the center region velocity, exhibiting the characteristics of a strong shear-driven flow. This phenomenon is explained to be due to the existence of small gaps between the slug and the channel wall at each capillary corner so that the gas flows through the gaps inducing high shear on the slug surface. Simulation of the shape of a static droplet inside a cubic cell obtained by using the Surface Evolver program is supportive of the existence of the gap at the rectangular capillary corners. The flow fields in the circular capillary, in which no such gap exists, are also measured. The results show that a similar flow pattern to that of the hydrophilic rectangular capillary (i.e., center-to-wall flow) is always exhibited regardless of the wettability of the channel wall, which is also indicative of the validity of the above-mentioned assertion.

A STUDY ON A MULTI-LEVEL SUBSTRUCTURING METHOD FOR COMPUTATIONS OF FLUID FLOW (유동계산을 위한 다단계 부분 구조법에 대한 연구)

  • Substructuring methods are often used in finite element structural analyses. In this study a multi-level substructuring(MLSS) algorithm is developed and proposed as a possible candidate for finite element fluid solvers. The present algorithm consists of four stages such as a gathering, a condensing, a solving and a scattering stage. At each level, a predetermined number of elements are gathered and condensed to form an element of higher level. At the highest level, each sub-domain consists of only one super-element. Thus, the inversion process of a stiffness matrix associated with internal degrees of freedom of each sub-domain has been replaced by a sequential static condensation of gathered element matrices. The global algebraic system arising from the assembly of each sub-domain matrices is solved using a well-known iterative solver such as the conjugare gradient(CG) or the conjugate gradient squared(CGS) method. A time comparison with CG has been performed on a 2-D Poisson problem. With one domain the computing time by MLSS is comparable with that by CG up to about 260,000 d.o.f. For 263,169 d.o.f using 8 x 8 sub-domains, the time by MLSS is reduced to a value less than $30\%$ of that by CG. The lid-driven cavity problem has been solved for Re = 3200 using the element interpolation degree(Deg.) up to cubic. in this case, preconditioning techniques usually accompanied by iterative solvers are not needed. Finite element formulation for the incompressible flow has been stabilized by a modified residual procedure proposed by Ilinca et al.[9].

A Study on the Properties of Substituted Ferrite (Fe-Al-Ga-Si) (치환형 Ferrite (Fe-Al-Ga-Si)의 특성 연구)

  • The crystal structure and magnetic properties of a new solid solution type ferrite $(Fe_2O_3)_5-(Al_2O_3)_{3.4}-(Ga_2O_3)_{0.6}-SiO$ were investigated using X-ray diffraction and M$\"{o}$ssbauer spectroscopy. The results of the X-ray diffraction pattern indicated that the crystal structure of the sample appears to be a cubic spinel type structure. The lattice constant (a = 8.317 ${\AA}$) decreases slightly with the substitution of $Ga_2O_3$ even though the ionic radii of the Ga ions are larger than that of the Al ions. The results can be attributed to a higher degree of covalency in the Ga-O bonds than in the Al-O and Fe-O bonds, which can also be explained using the observed M$\"{o}$ssbauer parameters, which are the magnetic hyperfine field, isomer shift, and quadrupole splitting. The drastic change in the magnetic structure according to the Ga ion substitution in the $ (Fe_2O_3)_5(Al_2O_3)_{4-x}(Ga_2O_3)_xSiO$ system and the low temperature variation have been studied through a M$\"{o}$ssbauer spectroscopy. The M$\"{o}$ssbauer spectrum at room temperature shows the superpositions of two Zeeman patterns and a strong doublet. It shows significant departures from the prototypical ferrite and is comparable with the diluted ferrite. The doublet of spectrum at room temperature appears to originate from superparamagnetic clusters and also the asymmetry of the doublet appears to be caused by the preferred orientation of the crystallites. The M$\"{o}$ssbauer spectra below room temperature show various complicated patterns, which can be explained by the freezing of the superparamagnetic clusters. On cooling, the magnetic states of the sample were various and multi critical.

Mineralogical Change of Acid Sulfate Weathering of Hydrothermally Altered Pyritic Andesite (열수변질 안산암 기원의 함황광물과 특이산성토적 풍화에 따른 광물학적 변화)

  • Oxidation of pyrite has caused a serious environmental problem such as the acidification of soil and surface water. The mineralogical change of acid sulfate weathering of hydrothermally altered andesite which contained 11.8% of pyrite and was exposed in atmosphere by lay out works for a residential area and a golf course was studied using X-ray diffraction (XRD) and electronmicroscopes. Ferrihydrite, jarosite, and an unidentified water soluble phase were observed as weathering products of the andesite. Under electronmicroscopes, showed aggregate of platy microcrystals; jarosite was platy morphology: water soluble Phase was columnar. Morphology of fresh Pyrite in the andesite changed from pyritrohedron to cubic in its frequency with increasing its particle size. The drainage water was acidic (pH 3.5) and in an equilibrium state with both ferrihydrite and jarosite.

  • Derivation procedures of exact dynamic stiffness matrices of thin-walled straight beams subjected to eccentrically axial forces are rigorously presented for the spatial free vibration analysis. An exact dynamic stiffness matrix is established from governing equations for a uniform beam element with nonsymmetric thin-walled cross section. First this numerical technique is accomplished via a generalized linear eigenvalue problem by introducing 14 displacement parameters and a system of linear algebraic equations with complex matrices. Thus, the displacement functions of displacement parameters are exactly derived and finally exact stiffness matrices are determined using element force-displacement relationships. The natural frequencies of nonsymmetric thin-walled straight beams are evaluated and compared with analytical solutions or results by thin-walled beam element using the cubic Hermitian polynomials and ABAQU's shell elements in order to demonstrate the validity of this study.

Comparative Study in Algebra Education with CAS: Korea and US cases (컴퓨터 대수체계(CAS) 대비 중등대수교육 기초 연구)

  • This study was designed to gain insight to adopt CAS into secondary level algebra education in Korea. Most inactive usage of calculators in math and most negative effects of calculators on their achievements of Korean students were shown in International studies such as TIMSS-R. A comparative study was carried out with consideration of mathematical backgrounds and technological environments. 8 Korean students and 26 US students in Grade 11 were participated in this study. Subjects' Problem solving process and their strategies of CAS usage in classical Box-problem with CAS were analyzed. CAS helped modeling by providing symbolic manipulation commands and graphs with students' mathematical knowledge. Results indicates that CAS requires shifts focus in algebraic contents: recognition of decimal & algebraic presentations of numbers; linking various presentations, etc. The extent of instrumentation effects on the selection of problem solving strategies among Korea and US students. Spatial Pattern of the Settlement-Communality in Rural Mountain Area (정주공동성의 공간적 존재형태에 관한 연구(1) -산간지역(평창군 미탄면)의 사례를 중심으로-)

  • The drastic change of mountain community, which have led existing villages to a size reduction or an extinction, makes this study concentrate on finding out the new community unit as a spatial zone of dayily life and agricultural production. The communality which has played a key role in a aura settlement consistency has been focused on the socio-economic aspect till now, neglecting the spatia] nature. The settlement-communality( SC) putting a stress on the spatial aspect can be, therefore, shapec as being multi-dimensional, composed of both a horizontally areal coverage on the surface of the residential place and a vertically hierarchial relationship between settlements, by analyzing thro( elements of communality that are the economic, socio -cultural and spatial activities. The research site is located administratively in Milan-Myoun, Pyoungchang-Gun, Gangwon-Do that ha: the characteristics as a typical mountain community. The results of field survey of which the method i: to draw the activity zone from an interview with every village's head and some residents with th( prepared questionaire can be summarized as followings. Firstly, the SC in almost all villages tended to be weakened or extincted, none the less, the spatia zone of that overally enlarged and got out of natural village unit(hamlet). However the areal coverall on which the SC has an influence reaches up to the alliant domain of a few villages generally congruen with the lowest level administrative district, Secondly, the economic and social activity pattern in village life has a tendency to be directly linked with a upper central place, so that has induced the function of a central village in the middle-low settlement hierarchy to be largely shrinked. Not only the conventional residents'access to goods service but also the recent service-delivers'access to residents has gradually formed the vertical communality with direct linkage between the upper and the bottom level settlements Lastly, the enfeeblement of the SC in the lowest settlement level tends to be supplemented by enlarging the horizontal zone of the SC or especially by strengthening the vertical direct linkage system. The very this point makes the mountain community open to the external world and also makes the spatial unit of community be multi-dimensional just like a cubic.

Evaluation of Glyceryl Monooleate(GMO) W/O Emulsion Stability by using Turbiscan®LAB (Turbiscan®을 이용한 Glyceryl Monooleate(GMO) 함유 W/O 유제의 안정성 평가)

  • The main object of this study was to prepare of w/o emulsion including glyceryl monooleate(GMO) and to evaluate its stability by using the recently developed $Turbiscan^{(R)}LAB$. GMO is the polar oily surfactant with the low HLB value, and it forms the gel phase of cubic structures after dissolves in aqueous media. Phosphate buffer solution (PBS) of pH 7.4 was prepared as the water phase and Marcol 52(mineral oil) was used as the oil phase in this study. GMO was used as the surfactant of W/O emulsion. W/O emulsion using GMO alone as a surfactant was very unstable. But the emulsion using both GMO and poloxamer 407 was more stable. The stability of W/O emulsions was evaluated after centrifuging the emulsions. But it was difficult with naked eye because an opaque and concentrated system like W/O emulsion was very turbid. So $Turbiscan^{(R)}LAB$ was used to detect the destabilization phenomena in non-diluted emulsion. As a result, the W/O emulsion using the proper amounts of GMO and poloxamer 407 was more stable among them using GMO of various amounts. But it seems that the other element for the stability of W/O emulsion including GMO was required. Furthermore, the $Turbiscan^{(R)}LAB$ was a very efficient analyzer for evaluating the physical stability of emulsion.

Formation of Al3Ti From Mechanically Alloyed Hyper-Peritectic Al-Ti Powder (기계적 합금화법으로 제조된 과포정 Al-Ti 합금에서 Al3Ti 형성에 관한 연구)

  • Mechanical alloying is an effective process to finely distribute inert dispersoids in an Al-TM(TM is a transition metal) system. It has been considered that high melting point aluminides are formed by precipitation from supersaturated Al(Ti) powder. This analysis is based on the fact that much higher content of TM than the solubioity can be dissolved in alpha aluminum during the high energy ball milling. Thus, decomposition behavior of Ti in the Al(Ti) was considered very important. But it is confirmed that the higher portion of Ti than Al(Ti) solid solution is existed as nano-sized Ti particles in the MA powders by high energy ball nilling from the XRD spectrum and TEM analysis in this study. Therefore, the role of undissolved TM particles affect the formation of aluminides should be suitably considered. In this study, we present experimental observation on the formation of $Al_3Ti$ fron mechanical alloyed Al-Ti alloys in the hyperperitectic region. This study showed that, in the mechanically alloyed Al-20wt%Ti specimen, intermediate phase of cubic $Al_3Ti$ and tetragonal $Al_{24}Ti_8$ formed at $300{\sim}400^{\circ}C$ and $400{\sim}500^{\circ}C$, respectively, before the MA state reaches to equilibrium at higher temperatures. The formation behavior of $Ll_2-Al_3Ti$ is interpreted by interdiffusion of Al and Ti in solid state based on the fact that large amount of nano-sized Ti particles exist in the milled powder. Present analysis indicated undissolved Ti particles of nanosize should have played an important role initiation the formation of $Al_3Ti$ phase during annealing.

Effect of Gd2O3 and Sm2O3 Addition on the Properties of CeO2 (CeO2에서의 Gd2O3 및 Sm2O3첨가량변화에 따른 특성변화)

  • Sintering behavior and electrical properties of CeO$_2$ system were investigated as a function of the amount of Gd:$_2$O$_3$, and Sm$_2$O$_3$, addition. Doped CeO$_2$ consisted of a homogeneous solid solution of the cubic fluorite structure within the amount of addition from 0 mol% to 15 mol%. Grain growth rate of Gd$_2$O$_3$-doped CeO$_2$ was much smaller than that of pure CeO$_2$, while densification rate was considerably larger. Thus doped CeO$_2$ showed a higher density than pure CeO$_2$. The electrical conductivity of Ce$_1$-$_{x}$Sm$_{x}$O$_1$-$_{x}$/2 was increased up to x = 0.2. However, with further increasing dopant concentrations, the magnitude of the conductivity was found to decrease remarkably. The ionic conductivity value obtained at $700^{\circ}C$ for 10 mol% Sm$_2$O$_3$-doped CeO$_2$ electrolyte was 4.6${\times}$10$^{-2}$ S$.$$cm^{-1}$ /.EX> /.
