  • To solve the nonlinear system problems, many methods have been proposed. Generally those methods however need long processing time because of their complicated algorithms. On the other hand, some simple linearization methods also have been studied. In this paper, a new linearization method using cubic splines[1] is proposed. The approximated linear system obtained by this method we can apply the conventional simple linear system theories such as Kalman filter[2, 3] for the estimation problem.

  • Monoolein-based cubic liquid crystalline systems were formulated for the local delivery of oregonin and hirsutanonol for the treatment of atopic dermatitis. The liquid crystalline phase and its nanodispersion containing drugs were prepared. The skin permeation and deposition properties of the drugs were examined in normal and delipidized rat skin. The proportion of oregonin (%) deposited in normal skin after topical administration of the drugs in the form of aqueous solution, cubic phase or cubic nanodispersions were $1.53\;{\pm}\;0.46$, $3.62\;{\pm}\;0.17$ and $5.13\;{\pm}\;0.73$, and those of hirsutanonol were $2.46\;{\pm}\;0.02$, $5.44\;{\pm}\;0.27$ and $17.28\;{\pm}\;2.19$, respectively. The greater lipophilicity and thus greater skin affinity of hirsutanonol than oregonin contributed the greater amount of skin deposition. The monoolein-based liquid crystalline phases significantly increased the amount of both drugs permeated and deposited. Approximately 3.2, 2.1 and 3.0 times greater amount of oregonin, and 3.4, 2.1 and 2.2 times greater amount of hirsutanonol were deposited in delipidized skin after administration of each drug in the form of aqueous solution, cubic phase and cubic nanodispersions system, respectively, because of lowered barrier function of the delipidized skin. In this study, the effects of drug property, vehicles type and skin condition on skin deposition and permeation properties of drug were examined and concluded that monoolein-based liquid crystalline systems would be a promising formulation for the local delivery of drugs.

  • An $O(h^4)$ cubic spline collocation method for biharmonic equation with a special boundary conditions is formulated and a fast direct method is proposed for the linear system arising when the cubic spline collocation method is employed. This method requires $O(N^2\;{\log}\;N)$ arithmatic operations over an $N{\times}N$ uniform partition.

  • In this paper, the performances of various channel estimation schemes for DVB-H system are investigated. The linear interpolation, the second order interpolation, the cubic spline interpolation, and the time-domain interpolation, which are used in frequency domain, are chosen as the channel estimation schemes. We derived the performances of Mean Square Error (MSE), Bit Error Rate (BER), and the complexity of calculation in Rayleigh and Rician fading channel through computer simulations. From the simulation results, the cubic spline interpolation shows the best performance under high $E_b/N_0$ environments.

  • Numerical solutions of the Rosenau-Burgers equation based on the cubic B-spline finite element method are introduced. The backward Euler method is used for discretization in time, and the obtained nonlinear algebraic system is changed to a linear system by the Newton's method. We show that those methods are unconditionally stable. Two test problems are studied to demonstrate the accuracy of the proposed method. The computational results indicate that numerical solutions are in good agreement with exact solutions.

  • The numerical procedure has been developed for simulating incompressible viscous flow around a turbine stage with rotor-stator interaction. This study solves 2-D unsteady incompressible Navier-Stokes equations on a non-orthogonal curvilinear coordinate system. The Marker-and-Cell concept is applied to efficiently solve continuity equation. To impose an accurate boundary condition, O-H multiblocked grid system is generated. O-type grid and H-type grid is generated near and outer rotor-stator The cubic-spline interpolation is applied to handle a relative motion of a rotor to the stator. Turbulent flows have been modeled by the Baldwin- Lomax turbulent model. To validate present procedure, the time averaged pressure coefficients around the rotor and stator are compared with experiment and a good agreement obtained.

  • To develop the port productivity and effictiveness, the introduction of the On Dock Operating System in Pusan Container Terminals has to be considered and the present Off Dock CY be closed step by step. This work aims to evaluate the needed CY area in Pusan Port under the On Dock Operating System. This researching flow is as follows. Firstly, estimate total sea-borne container cargo volumes in Korea and distribute them to all container terminals according to the past trends and the planned port development. Secondly, estimate the average period and the average tiers stored at On Dock CY in case of On Dock Operating System. Thirdly caculate the needed CY Area to handle the distributed container cargo volume under the On Dock Operating System. Finally, the following results are obtained. (1) In 1998, opening the Gamman Terminal, 827 thousands cubic meters are insufficient. (2) In $2001\sim2004$, the insufficiency of needed CY Area will be maximized and estimated to be 936 thousands cubic meters in 2001. (3) In $2005\sim2011$, opening the Gadu Terminal, the insufficiency of needed CY Area will be decreased and estimated to be 240 thousands cubic meters in 2011.

  • We derive a modified version of cubic convolution interpolation for the enlargement or reduction of digital images by arbitrary scaling factors. The proposed scaling scheme is used to resize various format pictures in the transcoding system, which transforms the bitstream compressed at a bit rate, such as the HD bitstream, into another bit rate stream. In many applications such as the transcoder, the resolution conversion is very important for changing the image size while the scaled image maintains high quality. We focus on the modification of the scaler kernel according to the relation between formats of the original and the resized image. In the modification, various formats defined in MPEG standards are considered. We show experimental results that demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed interpolation method.

  • We derive a modified version of the cubic convolution scaler to enlarge or reduce the size of digital image with arbitrary ratio. To enhance the edge information of the scaled image and to obtain a high-quality scaled image, the proposed scaler is applied along the direction of an edge. Since interpolation along the direction of an edge has to process nonuniformly sampled data, the kernel of the cubic convolution scaler is modified to interpolate the data. The proposed scaling scheme can be used to resize pictures in various formats in a transcoding system that transforms a bit stream compressed at one bit rate into one compressed at another bit rate. In many applications, such as transcoders, the resolution conversion is very important for changing the image size while maintaining high quality of the scaled image. We show experimental results that demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed interpolation method. The proposed scheme provides clearer edges, without artifacts, in the resized image than do conventional schemes. The algorithm exhibits significant improvement in the minimization of information loss when compared with the conventional interpolation algorithms.

  • A linearized finite-difference scheme is used to transform the initial/boundary-value problem associated with the nonlinear Schrodinger equation into a linear algebraic system. This method is developed by replacing the time and the nonlinear term by an appropriate parametric linearized scheme based on Taylor’s expansion. The resulting finite-difference method is analysed for stability and convergence. The results of a number of numerical experiments for the single-soliton wave are given.
