As the single chamber SOFC(SC-SOFC) showed higher prospect on reducing the operation temperature as well as offering higher design flexibility of SOFCs, lots of concerns have been given to investigate the catalytic activity of perovskite-type oxide in mixed fuel and oxidant conditions. Hence we thoroughly investigated the catalytic property of various perovskite-type oxides such as $La_{0.8}Sr_{0.2}MnO_3(LSM),\;La_{0.6}Sr_{0.4}CoO_3(LSC),\;La_{0.6}Sr_{0.4}Co_{0.2}Fe_{0.8}O_3(LSCF),\;Sm_{0.5}Sr_{0.5}CoO_3(SSC),\;and\;Ba_{0.5}Sr_{0.5}Co_{0.8}Fe_{0.2}(BSCF)$ under the partial oxidation condition of methane which used to be given for SC-SOFC operation. In this study, powder form of each perovskite oxides whose surface areas were controlled to be equal, were investigated as functions of methane to oxygen ratios and reactor temperature. XRD, BET and SEM were employed to characterize the crystalline phase, surface area and microstructure of prepared powders before and after the catalytic oxidation. According to the gas phase analysis with flow-through type reactor and gas chromatography system, LSC, SSC, and LSCF showed higher catalytic activity at fairly lower temperature around $400^{\circ}C{\sim}450^{\circ}C$ whereas LSM and BSCF could be activated at much higher temperature above $600^{\circ}C$.
The objective of this research was to find out the physical properties, such as dispersion and coagulation, of soil minerals depending on the types and concentrations of the cations in aqueous solution. Hwangto samples were obtained from 90 to 130 cm from surface at Jangdong-ri, Donggang-Myon, Naju, Chonnam Province. The clay fraction (< $2\;{\mu}m$) was separated by sedimentation method from the bulk soils. Both Hwangto and clay fractions, and the same samples after removal of amorphous and crystalline iron oxides were used in this experiment. The effect of 4 cations ($Na^+$, $K^+$, $Mg^{2+}$, $Ca^{2+}$) and their concentrations on settling speed and basal spacing of the minerals were observed to examine the physical properties of the soil and clay minerals. Hwangto mainly consisted of quartz, and the clay fractions consisted of kaolinite, illite, and vermiculite. The bulk soils contained 16.3 mg/kg of amorphous iron oxides and 436 mg/kg of crystalline iron oxides. Clay fractions were dispersed better than bulk soils due to their smaller particle size than that of the bulk samples in the aqueous solution. The bulk and clay samples were dispersed better when iron oxides were removed because of coating of minerals by the iron oxides. Clay minerals were settled faster as the charge and the concentration of cations added increased. The d-spacing of kaolinite and illite did not change when 4 types of cations were added. The d-spacing of vermiculite showed $14.04\;{\AA}$ when divalent cations were added while that of vermiculite showed $13.9\;{\AA}$ when monovalent cations were added. It may be attributed to the hydration radii of cations. This study indicated that both coating of iron oxides on minerals and types and concentrations of cations affect dispersion of minerals in solution and d-spacing of expanding clay minerals such as vermiculite.

In this work, tin oxides were obtained by the liquid reduction precipitation method and hydrothermal process using $SnCl_2{\cdot}2H_2O$, $N_2H_4$, and NaOH. Tin oxide crystals having different sizes and morphologies could be achieved. The powders were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and Field Emission Scanning Electron Microscopy (FE-SEM). Depending on the molar ratio of the raw materials, tin oxide crystalline with the spherical and rectangular plate-like shape could be obtained, the crystal phase was SnO and $Sn_6O_4(OH)_4$. And the obtained SnO crystals by a hydrothermal reaction showed various shapes, such as, spherical, plate-like and flower-like architectures depending on the temperature conditions.

The heat treatment of serpentines for mineral carbonation was studied systematically. Crystallographic, spectroscopic and thermochemical properties were investigated for serpentines before and after heat treatment. Drastic weight loss due to the removal of hydroxy groupe(-OH) occupied in serpentine crystalline was revealed after heat treatment. In XPS results, MgO was founded at heat treated serpentine powders while Mg(OH) was observed at untreated serpentine powders. Metallic oxides originated from serpentine ingredients were regenerated by heat treatment.
Characteristics of the sol-gel derived (Ba1-xPbx)TiO3 powders are compared with those of powders prepared by the calcining ofmixed oxides method (CMO) and molten salt synthesis method(MSS). The sol-gel derived powder has a higher surface area (50$m^2$/g) than those of CMO(3.8$m^2$/g) and MSS(11.5$m^2$/g) derived powders. In the sol-gel method, the (Ba1-xPbx)TiO3 was synthesized at $600^{\circ}C$ for 1hr, indicating that this method has a crystalline temperature 20$0^{\circ}C$-30$0^{\circ}C$ lowr than those of the CMO and MSS methods.

In this study, the corrosion resistance and adhesion of electrophoretic paint (E-paint) were studied on AZ31 magnesium alloy pretreated in cerium chemical conversion coating solutions with the addition of various ethanol concentrations. It was found that with increasing ethanol concentration from 0 to 90 percent can decrease the formation of $Mg(OH)_2/MgO$ and increase the formation of nano-crystalline cerium oxides on the coating. Both corrosion resistance and adhesion of E-painted AZ31 increased with increasing ethanol concentration. The best E-paint sample was observed on the sample pretreatment in cerium chemical conversion coating solution with the addition of 80 percent of ethanol. This sample showed an excellent adhesion without paint detached after water immersion test for 500 h at $40^{\circ}C$, and only a few blisters observed at the near scratched sites after 1000 h salt-spray test.
The effects of additional P-doping on the magnetic properties, thermal stability and cation distribution of Co-doped ${\gamma}-{Fe_2} {O_3}$have been investigated by means of magnetic annealing and measurements with vibration sample magnetometer and torque magnetometer. It is found that the P-doping promotes the coercivity and its magnetic-thermal stability, which may be attributed to increase of the cubic magneto-crystalline anisotropy constant, $K_1$ and the activation energy, E, for cation rearrangement, respectively. The cation distribution of P and Co-substituted iron oxide was calculated from the variation of the saturation magnetization with P-doping on the basis of the Neel model. It was found that the most of P ions in the iron oxides occupied the B-site of spinel lattice.

Synthesis of iron nanopowder by room-temperature electrochemical reduction process of ${\alpha}-Fe_2O_3$ nanopowder was investigated in terms of phase evolution and microstructure. As process variables, reduction time and applied voltage were changed in the range of $1{\sim}20$ h and $30{\sim}40$ V, respectively. From XRD analyses, it was found that volume of Fe phase increased with increasing reduction time and applied voltage, respectively. The crystallite size of Fe phase in all powder samples was less than 30 nm, implying that particle growth was inhibited by the reaction at room temperature. Based on the distinct equilibrium shape of crystalline particle, phase composition of nanoparticles was identified by TEM observation.
Anaerobic Fe(III)-reducing bacteria are known to be able to reduce crystalline and amorphous Fe(III) oxides. Anaerobic Fe(III)-reducing bacterial reduction can induce several kinds of secondary minerals (Fe(II) containing minerals) such as magnetite, siderite, vivianite [($Fe_{3}(PO_{4}{\cdot}2H_{2}O$], and iron sulfide (FeS) according to variety of geochemical and biological conditions. Copper oxide is a multi-functional material being used in various research areas including catalysis, electrochemical materials, oxidizing agents etc. Among these areas, we have synthesized and utilized graphene based copper oxide nanocomposites (CuOx/Graphene) for the catalytic applications (C-N cross coupling reaction). Briefly, Cu precursors were anchored on the graphite oxide(GO) sheets being exfoliated and oxidized from graphite powder. Two different crystalline structures of Cu2O and CuO on graphene and GO were prepared by annealing them in Ar and O2 environments, respectively. The morphological and electronic structures were systemically investigated using FT-IR, XRD, XPS, XAFS, and TEM. Here, we demonstrate that the catalytic performance was found to depend on oxidative states and morphological structures of CuOx graphene nanocomposites. The relationship between the structure of copper oxides and catalytic efficiency toward C-N cross coupling reaction will be discussed.
