Orthopantomogram is commonly used to evaluate root parallelism. "Good parallelism" between roots is widely accepted as one of the guidelines of a successful orthodontic treatment. In case there was a large angle between crown axis and root axis, and if we valued only the position of crown in establishing occlusal relationship without considering of the situation of root, the problem of root arrangement between adjacent teeth would be occurred. The estimate of root parallelism in mesiodistal direction before and after orthodontic treatment must be emphasized. The intent of this study was to determine the clinical importance and correlation of the angle between crown axis and root axis. Orthopantomograms of 105 orthodontic patients being treated in Yonsei university were used in this study. Twenty-eight teeth in both maxilla and mandible were selected and analyzed quantitively to evaluate the angle between crown axis and root axis, and obtain the correlationship among the individual teeth. The results are as follows: 1. Among the teeth presenting normal distribution, the maxillary right canine showed the largest mean value( $5.73{\pm}4.42^{\circ}$), which was composed of the crown-root angles, and the mandibular left lateral incisor showed the smallest mean value( $0.60{\pm}3.76^{\circ}$). 2. The crown-root angles of the maxillary incisors and the first molars, and the mandibular central incisors and the first molars didn't show normal distribution and the ranges of these angles were dispersed. 3. Significant differences were present between the crown axis and the root axis except for lower first premolars. (p<0.05) 4. No significant difference was present for the crown-root angle between right and left side, (p<0.05) 5. No significant difference was present for the crown-root angle between male and female except for lower left first premolar. (p<0.05) 6. In the upper right quadrant, significant correlations were present between crown-root angles of the central incisor and lateral incisor, lateral incisor and canine. In the upper left quadrant, significant correlations were present between crown-root angles of the central incisor and lateral incisor. In the lower right quadrant, significant correlations were present between crown-root angles of the central incisor and lateral incisor, first molar and second molar. In the lower left quadrant, significant correlations were present between crown-root angles of the central incisor and lateral incisor, lateral incisor and canine, first molar and second molar. Purpose: The purpose of this study was to assess the internal fitness of the PMMA 3-unit bridge that was fabricated with 5-axis milling machine and to verify the clinically allowable values. Methods: For fabrication of the crown bridge in this study, 25-27 abutment teeth were used. The prepare abutment teeth were scanned with a scanner and 3-unit bridge was designed by using design software. Upon the completion of the design, the 3-unit bridge was fabricated by using a PMMA block with 5-axis milling machine. The internal surface of the fabricated 3-unit bridge was scanned by using a scanner and the difference between the 3-unit bridge and the abutment teeth was assessed by merging them together. Results: $RMS{\pm}SD$ values for PRE group, MOL group, and BRI group were $51.2{\pm}18.2$, $44.8{\pm}10.0$, and $52.1{\pm}8.3{\mu}m$, respectively. The mean of the PRE group was bigger than that of the MOL and BRI group; however, statistically significant difference was not found (p>0.05). Conclusion: The PMMA 3-unit bridge that was fabricated with 5-axis milling machine presented stable internal values for each crown and overall internal values were within the range of clinically allowable values.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to compare the fracture strength of the zirconia monolithic all-ceramic crowns according to the thickness(0.5 mm, 0.8 mm, 1.1 mm) and IPS Empress II ceramic crown of 1.5 mm thickness. Material and method: Eight crowns for each of 3 zirconia crown groups were fabricated using CAD/CAM system(Kavo, Germany) and eight Empress II crowns were made from silicone mold and wax pattern. Each crown group was finished in accordance with the specific manufacturer s instruction. All crowns were luted to the metal dies using resin cement and mounted on the testing jig in a universal testing machine. The load was directed at the center of crown with perpendicular to the long axis of each specimen until catastrophic failure occurred. Analysis of variance and Tukey multiple comparison test(p<.05) were applied to the data. Results and Conclusion: 1. The fracture strength of the zirconia monolithic all-ceramic crown was higher thickness increased(p<.05). 2 The fracture strength of 1.1 mm thickness zirconia monolithic all-ceramic crown was higher than the fracture strength of 1.5 mm thickness IPS Empress II crown(p<.05). 3. The fracture strength of 0.5 mm thickness zirconia monolithic all-ceramic crown exceeded maximum occlusal forces.

With the increasing popularity of dental CAD / CAM, the kinds of materials that can be used and the range that can be utilized are also increasing. One of the biggest advantages of a dental CADCAM is that you can make a final prosthesis with one visit, but in case of zirconia or a complex aesthetic prosthesis, it is often difficult to make it in one day. In this case, temporary PMMA material can be used to provide a temporary crown with aesthetic and functional properties to the patient and can be used as a test crown or template for the final prosthesis. And if you are with a 5-axis milling machine in a clinic, you can make a temporary crown precisely to a large extent in a short time. In this article, various applications and clinical cases of PMMA temporary crown in the clinic will be presented.

The purpose of the present study was to evaluate the marginal discrepancy and topography of artificial crown on teeth extracted due to severe periodontal disease. Twenty specimens were invested into metamethylacrylate resin and cutted into vertical slices along with the long axis of tooth. The selected marginal discrepancy between the outer edge of the crown and the finishing line of abutment was examined by stereo- microscope(Olympus, PM-VSP-3, Japan) at magnification of up to 10, and the topography of finishing margin on crown was observed by stereomicroscopeat magnification of up to $70{\times}$. The results were as follows. (1) The mean marginal discrepancy between extracted tooth and artificial crown were $50.82{\mu}m$. (2) There was a considerable difference in the microstructure of finishing margins among specimens. Microscopic Structure on finishing margin showed indefinite line, poor fit (open, underextended and overextended), distorted margin, and surface roughness. This study suggested that there could be necessary to consider the response of periodontium to the emergence profile of natural tooth and precision of marginal geometry while establishing treatment planning for the reconsruction of the artificial crown.
The purpose of this study was to compare the fracture strengths and the fracture patterns of several hybrid-ceramic crowns and metal-ceramic crown. Ten crowns were constructed for each group according to the manufacturer's instruction. Removable template of silicone rubber impression material was used for standardization of each crowns. Each crown was cemented on a metal die with hybrid glass ionomer cement. All crowns cemented were stored in distilled water, $36^{\circ}C$ for 24 hours prior to loading in an universal testing machine. The load was directed at 130 degrees the long axis of metal die. The fracture strengths were measured and the fracture patterns were observed. The following results were obtained from this study 1. The mean fracture strengths of $Artglass^{(R)}$, $Sculpture^{(R)}$ and $Targis^{(R)}$ were $57.5{\pm}9.5Kgf,\;62.7{\pm}12.2Kgf$ and $60.2{\pm}10.1Kgf$ respectively. There was no significant difference among each hybrid ceramic crown group. 2. The toad required to fracture hybrid-ceramic crowns was significantly smaller than metal-ceramic crowns($131.7{\pm}22.0Kgf$). 3. In the metal-ceramic crowns, labial porcelain detached partially from porcelain-metal junction of proximal side by load. 4. Hybrid-ceramic crowns showed a simple fracture pattern that fracture line began at the loading area and extended through proximal surface, perpendicular to the margin. The crown was separated into two parts of labial side and lingual side. Above results revealed that three kinds of the hybrid-ceramic crowns used in this study must have careful application in clinical use since the strength of hybrid-ceramic crown was lower(about 1/2) than that of metal-ceramic crown.
Most commonly used axis for central incisors in lateral cephalometric radiographs is the line connecting root apex and incisor edge. However, crown axis and root axis do not always coincide in cases of malocclusion patients. The angle created by these axis are called the collum angle, which should be considered in orthodontic diagnosis and treatment. In this study, 31 Class I malocclusion, 30 Class II division 1 malocclusion, 31 Class II division 2 malocclusion, and 31 Class m malocclusion patients were selected and their collum angles were measured. Correlation between these angles and malocclusions was investigated, and the correlation analysis with other parameters in cephalometrics was done. The results were as follows ; 1. The mean collum angles according to the types of malocclusions are ; $3.11^{\circ}{\pm}3.54^{\circ}$ for Class I, $1.23^{\circ}{\pm}2.41^{\circ}$ for Class II division 1, $3.77^{\circ}{\pm}4.39^{\circ}$ for Class II division 2, and $3.90^{\circ}{\pm}4.08^{\circ}$ for Class III malocclusion. 2. Statistically significant differences in collum angles were noted between Class II division 1 group and Class II division 2 and Class III group. 3. Significant correlations were found between collum angles and other parameters used in cephalometrics, namely IMPA for Class I, Wits for Class II division 1, Overbite for Class II division 2 and for ClassIII.
Aerenchyma development in rice (Oryza sativa L.) roots is quite important for adaptation to waterlogged or reduced soil conditions. Anatomical observations were carried out to clarify the development of schizogenous and lysigenous aerenchyma in elongating crown roots of rice. The crown roots of 3rd and 4th phytomer were taken from rice plants of the 8th leaf stage grown by hydroponic culture. The schizogenous intercellular spaces in the cortex of crown root tip were observed using a light microscope with semi ultra-thin sections and the lysigenous aerenchyma in mature tissue of crown root were observed using a cryo scanning electron microscope (cryo-SEM) with freezing fracture method. The schizogenous intercellular spaces in the root tip exist obviously in the middle portion of cortical cell layers close to the root-root cap junction, but not in root cap, stele and outer cell layers of cortex. The air spaces were formed at the junction of four neighbouring cells of inner cortex in the transverse sections, and between longitudinal cell layer connected along the root axis. Although many of those spaces were filled with liquid, some spaces seem to exist as air spaces. The lysigenous aerenchyma in the cortex, which hardly filled with liquid, emerged at 3-4 cm segment from the root tip and increased toward the basal region of root axis. The developing process of lysigenous aerenchyma was primarily separation of a radial row of cells caused by the shrinking and collapsing of cortical cells and then formation of septa along the radial cell rows by the fusion of cell wall with each other. These results suggest that the schizogenous and lysigenous aerenchyma playa role as a passage for the movement of oxygen into the root tip region where oxygen is required for respiration.
Purpose: To investigate the influence of crown margin design on the stress distribution and to localize critical sites in maxillary canine under functional loading by using three dimensional finite element analysis. Materials and Methods: The bite force of 100 N, 150 N, and 200 N was applied with an angulation of $45^{\circ}$ to the longitudinal axis of tooth. Six models were restored with IPS e.max (Ivoclar Vivadent, Schaan, Liechtenstein) with a different margin design. With lingual ledge and various thicknesses, three different core ceramics were designed in each model. Result: In the core ceramic, the maximum tensile stresses were found at the labiocervical region. In the veneering ceramic the maximum tensile stresses were found at the area where the force was applied in all models. Conclusion: Shoulder and chamfer margin types are acceptable for all-ceramic rehabilitations. A ledge on the core ceramic at cervical region may affect the strength of all-ceramic crowns.

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to assess precision of crown prostheses that were fabricated by using 2 kinds of bur or 3 kinds of bur. Methods: The crowns were fabricated by using the first molar of the right maxillary in this study. The abutments that were prepared were scanned by using a scanner and designed by using CAD software. Based on the crown design, NC data were created with CAM software. The created NC data were used while fabricating the crown prostheses by using 5-axis milling machine. Scanning was done for the internal and external surface of the completed crown prostheses and 3-dimensional measurement was conducted for precision assessment. Results: The $RMS{\pm}SD$ value for the external surface of the crown prostheses that was fabricated by using two burs and three burs were $28.5{\pm}4.1{\mu}m$ and $19.1{\pm}2.8{\mu}m$, respectively; and the value for two burs were bigger than that for three burs with statistical significance (p<0.001). The $RMS{\pm}SD$ value for the internal surface of the crown prostheses that was fabricated by using two burs and three burs were $14.9{\pm}1.9{\mu}m$ and $13.3{\pm}2.5{\mu}m$, respectively; and the value for two burs were bigger than that for three burs but with no statistical significance. Conclusion: Based on this study, the prostheses that were fabricated by using 3 bur presented better stability compared to those that were fabricated by using 2 bur and statistically significant difference was found only in the external surface.
