  • Purpose: Mid-upper-arm circumference (MUAC) is considered an alternative screening method for obesity. The aims of this investigation were to examine the ability of MUAC to correctly identify children with elevated body mass index (BMI) and to determine the best MUAC cutoff point for identification of children with high BMI. Methods: Anthropometric measurements (height, weight, and MUAC) from a cross-sectional sample of 7,921 Pakistani children aged 5-14 years were analyzed. Pearson correlation coefficients between MUAC and other anthropometric measurements were calculated. Receiver operating characteristic curve analysis was used to determine the optimal MUAC cutoff point for identifying children with high BMI. Results: Among 7,921 children, the mean (${\pm}$standard deviation) age, BMI, and MUAC were 10.00 (${\pm}2.86years$), 16.16 (${\pm}2.66kg/m^2$), and 17.73 (${\pm}2.59cm$), respectively. The MUAC had a strong positive correlation with BMI. The optimal MUAC cutoff points indicating elevated BMI in boys ranged from 16.76 to 22.73, while the corresponding values in girls ranged from 16.38 to 20.57. Conclusion: MUAC may be used as a simple indicator of overweight/obesity in children, with reasonable accuracy in clinical settings.

  • In this study, transparent and conductive Al-doped zinc oxide (AZO) films were prepared on glass substrate by RF magnetron sputtering method using an Al-doped ZnO target (Al: 2wt.%) at room temperature as the thickness of 150 nm. We investigated the effects of the RF power between 100~350 W in the steps of 50 W on structural, electrical and optical properties of AZO films. The thickness and cross-sectional images of films were observed by field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM) and all of the films were kept to be constant about 150 nm on glass substrate. The grain size of AZO films figured out X-ray diffraction (XRD) on using the Scherrer' equation and their electrical properties investigated Hall effect electronic transport measurement system. Moreover, we measured transmittance of AZO films by UV/VIS spectrometer.

  • This paper presents an electromagnetic design method for magneto-rheological (MR) valves. Since the apparent viscosity of MR fluids is adjusted by applying magnetic fields, the MR valves can control high-level fluid power without any mechanical moving parts. In order to improve the performances of the MR valve, it is important that the magnetic field is effectively supplied to the MR fluid. For the purpose, the magnetic circuit composed with the yoke for forming magnetic flux path, the electromagnetic coil and the MR fluid should be well designed. In order to improve the static characteristic of the MR valve, the length of the magnetic flux path is decreased by removing the unnecessary bulk of the yoke. Also, in order to improve its dynamic and hysteretic characteristics, the magnetic reluctance of the magnetic circuit should be increased by minimizing the cross-sectional area of the yoke through which the magnetic flux passes. After two MR valves, one is a conventional type valve and the other is the proposed one, are designed and fabricated, their performances are evaluated experimentally.

  • A cross-sectional epidemiologic study was conducted to evaluate vitamin C nutritional status by assessing dietary intake and blood vitamin C level and to identify the relationships between dietary vitamin C intake, serum vitamin C level and blood lead level in Korean lead workers. The study population was 118 lead workers from two battery manufacturing factories and 63 non-lead-exposed controls. A food consumption survey was conducted by the 24-hr recall method to determine the dietary vitamin C intake level. The anthropometric measurements, blood collection, and survey were performed between September and November, 2000. Blood lead levels and serum vitamin C levels were measured using an atomic absorption spectrometer and high performance liquid chromatography, respectively. Vitamin C nutritional status of Korean lead workers was lower than that of the control group, in terms of both dietary intake and the biochemical index: the mean daily dietary intake level of vitamin C of lead workers was 65.9mg (94% RDA), while that of controls was 132.6mg(189% RDA) ; and the serum vitamin C status of lead workers (0.10mg/dl) was significantly lower than that of controls (1.08mg/dl ; p<0.001). Both dietary vitamin C intake and serum vitamin C levels showed a significant negative correlation with blood lead level (p<0.001), which indicates that strategies of dietary management to promote the health of Korean lead workers should focus on promoting the vitamin C intakes of individuals.

  • We investigated the androgenic effects of 11-ketotestosterone (11-KT) on gonadal sex reversal and spermatogenesis in honeycomb grouper Epinephelus merra by method of gonadal biopsy. 11-KT was injected intramuscularly at a concentration of 1 and $10{\mu}g$ body weight. The proportion of cross sectional area of the gonad occupied by each germ cell type was measured and compared pre- and post-injection group. During the sex change phase, the distribution ratio of oocytes was decreased in all fish of 11-KT treatment group while the distribution ratio of spermatocytes was increased than pre-injection group. In male phase, all fish of 11-KT treatment group shown the increased distribution ratio of spermatocytes, but the distribution ratio of spermatozoa was decreased than pre-injection group. The present results suggest that 11-KT can stimulate degeneration of oocytes, proliferation of spermatocytes and spermiation in honeycomb grouper.

  • Ulnar nerve compression in the cubital tunnel is a common entrapment syndrome of the upper limb. Pulsed radiofrequency lesioning (PRFL) has been reported as a treatment method for relieving neuropathic pain. Since the placement of the electrode in close proximity to a targeted nerve is very important for the success of PRFL, ultrasound seems to be well suited for this technique. A 36-year-old woman presented with complaints of numbness and pain on the medial aspect of the elbow and the pain radiated down to the $4^{th}$ and $5^{th}$ fingers for 10 years after she suffered an elbow contusion, we then scheduled this woman for the ultrasound guided PRFL of the ulanr nerve. The initial ultrasound examination demonstrated a swollen nerve, loss of the fascicular pattern and an increased cross sectional area of the ulnar nerve. After confirmation of the most swollen site of the nerve via ultrasound, two sessions of PRFL were performed. The postprocedural 10 cm visual analog scale score decreased from 8 to 1 after the two sessions of PRFL.

  • Passive sampler using 4-amino-3-hydrazino-5-mercapto-1, 2, 4-triazole (AHMT) was developed to determine formaldehyde in indoor environment. The chromatography paper cleaned by $3\%$ hydrogen peroxide solution was experimently determined as a optimum absorbtion filter for the collection of formaldehyde. The passive sampler with a broad cross-sectional area and a short diffusion length was quite good in sensitivity. The passive sampler and the active sampling method with an impinger were strongly correlated with a correlation coefficient of 0.9848. The limits of detection and quantification of the passive sampler for the measurement of formaldehyde in the indoor environment were 7.5 and 10.2 ppb, respectively. Temperature ($19\∼28^{circ}C$) and relative humidity ($30\∼90\%$) had slight influence on the sampling rate of the passive sampler. However, the increase of flow velocity on the surface of sampler resulted in the increase of sampling rate.

  • This paper presents a finite element procedure for dynamic analysis of non-uniform Timoshenko beams made of axially Functionally Graded Material (FGM) under multiple moving point loads. The material properties are assumed to vary continuously in the longitudinal direction according to a predefined power law equation. A beam element, taking the effects of shear deformation and cross-sectional variation into account, is formulated by using exact polynomials derived from the governing differential equations of a uniform homogenous Timoshenko beam element. The dynamic responses of the beams are computed by using the implicit Newmark method. The numerical results show that the dynamic characteristics of the beams are greatly influenced by the number of moving point loads. The effects of the distance between the loads, material non-homogeneity, section profiles as well as aspect ratio on the dynamic responses of the beams are also investigated in detail and highlighted.
