  • A comparison of predicted molar volume, vapor - liquid equilibrium, enthalpy of vaporization, droplet size history. and vaporization rates with several forms of equation of state has been made. The equation of state (EOS) investigated in this study includes the EOS given by Redlich - Kwong, the Soave - Redlich - Kwong, and the Peng - Robinson. Numerical results indicate that the Peng - Robinson EOS yields more accurate predictions of vapor - liquid equilibrium under a broader range of temperature and pressure conditions, especially at high pressures and near the critical point.

  • The solubilities of naphthalene in ammonia could be measured at various temperatures and pressures above the critical point of ammonia to represent the relationship between the solubility and the density of ammonia at desired temperature and pressure by means of a simple equation. This equation allows a calculation of the solubilities at higher and lower pressures. Using the equation, the solution energies, the solution entropies, and the second cross virial coefficients between naphthalene and ammonia have been determined to be compared with those in the case of the dissolution of naphthalene in supercritical carbon dioxide.

  • The purpose of this study was to analyze the variation of body shape and to. divide growth period into some age groups based on body type. Duncan Test, Heath-Carter's somatotyping method and allottery equation (y=baa) were applied to semiautomatic data concerning obesity/leakiness. The materials were 309 females aged from 12 to 17 years old. The following results were obtained: 1. In the Developmental trend of the human body, the 12-13 age groups belonged to the acceleration stage of adolescent growth spurt. The 14-15 age groups belonged to the latter period of adolescent growth. The 16-17 age groups belonged to the termination stage of adolescent growth. 2. In the Heath-Carter's somatotyping method, the average somatotype changed into M.M- C-C-M-D with age. 3. In the alphamerical analysis, the first critical point appeared at the stature 146 Cm in case of weight, LBM and fat. The second critical point appeared at the stature 154-157 Cm in case of LBM and Fat. All the three measurement showed positive allotmentty.

  • In the past few years, various damages have occurred in the vicinity of rivers due to flooding. In order to alleviate such flood damage, structural and non-structural measures are being established, and one of the important non-structural measures is to establish a flood warning system. In general, in order to establish a flood warning system, the water level of the flood alarm reference point is set, the critical flow corresponding thereto is calculated, and the warning precipitation amount corresponding to the critical flow is calculated through the Geomorphological Instantaneous Unit Hydrograph (GIUH) rainfall-runoff model. In particular, when calculating the critical flow, various studies have calculated the critical flow through the Manning formula. To compare the adequacy of this, in this study, the critical flow was calculated through the HEC-RAS model and compared with the value obtained from Manning's equation. As a result of the comparison, it was confirmed that the critical flow calculated by the Manning equation adopted excessive alarm precipitation values and lead a very high flow compared to the existing design precipitation. In contrast, the critical flow of HEC-RAS presented an appropriate alarm precipitation value and was found to be appropriate to the annual average alarm standard. From the results of this study, it seems more appropriate to calculate the critical flow through HEC-RAS, rather than through the existing Manning equation, in a situation where various river projects have been conducted resulting that most of the rivers have been surveyed.

  • This research focuses on the development of numerical code to deal with compressible two phase flow around three dimensional objects combined with cavitation model suggested by Weishyy et al. with k-e turbulent model. The cryogenic cavitation is carried out by considering the thermodynamic effect on physical properties of cryogenic fluids in physical point of view and implementing the temperature sensitivity in the energy equation of the government equations in numerical point of view, respectively. The formulation has been extensively validated for both liquid nitrogen and liquid hydrogen by simulating the experiments of Hord on hydrofoils. Then, simulations of cavitating turbopump inducers at their design flow rate are presented. Results over a broad range of Nss numbers extending from single-phase flow conditions through the critical head break down point are discussed. In particular, thermal depression effects arising from cavitation in cryogenic fluids are identified and their impact on the suction performance of the inducer quantified.

  • Experimental data of phase equilibrium is reported for caprolactone acrylate in supercritical carbon dioxide. Bubble-point data was measured by synthetic method at temperatures ranging from (313.2 to 393.2) K and pressures up to 55.93 MPa. In this research, the solubility of carbon dioxide for the (carbon dioxide + caprolactone acrylate) system decreases as temperature increases at a constant pressure. The (carbon dioxide + caprolactone acrylate) system exhibits type-I phase behavior. The experimental result for the (carbon dioxide + caprolactone acrylate) system was correlated with Peng-Robinson equation of state using mixing rule. The critical property of caprolactone acrylate was predicted with the Joback and Lyderson method.

  • The brine leakage is a tough problem in artificial freezing engineering. This paper takes the common soft clay in Wujiang District as the study object, and calcium chloride solutions with six salinity levels were considered. The 'classic' cooling curve method was employed to measure the freezing point of specimens after freeze-thaw. Results indicate that four characteristic stages can be observed including supercooling, abrupt transition, equilibrium and continual freezing, strongly dependent on the variation of unfrozen water content. Two characteristic points were found from the cooling curves, i.e., freezing point and initial crystallization temperature. A critical value for the former exists at which the increment lowers. The higher the saline content approximately linearly, lower the freezing point. In the initial five cycles, the freezing point increases and then stabilizes. Besides, the degree of supercooling was calculated and its correlations with water, salt and freeze-thaw cycles were noted. Finally, an empirical equation was proposed for the relationship of freezing point and three main factors, i.e., water content, saline content and freeze-thaw cycles. Comparison of calculated and measured data proves that it is reliable and may provide guidance for the design and numerical analysis in frozen soil engineering.

  • The perfect and accurate methods to control the wear are not made clear so far. For this phenomenon only mating surface has been studied. In order to control the wear the essence of it has to be made clear. It is reported that adhesive wear might occure as a result of plastic deformation, the fracture and removal or transfer asperities on close contacting surfaces. On this view point the plastic flow was attempted to compare with fluid or electromagnetic flow. The partial differential equations of equilibrium for the plane strain deformation will make use of the method of characteristics. The characteristic curves or characteristics of the hyperbolic equation coincide with the slip lines by R. Hill's papers. By Hencky's stress equation, it is evident that if P and .phi. are prescribed for a boundary condition then it may be possible to proceed along constant .alpha. and .betha. lines to determine the value of the hydrostatic pressure everywhere in the slip line field net work. A wedge formation mechanism has been considered for an explanation of this matters. The analysis shows that there is a critical value, which depends on the hardness ratio and the shear stress on the interface, for the top angle of asperity is less than this critical value, the asperity can yield plastically despite of being harder than the mating surface.

  • Groundwater development in coastal areas induces saltwater intrusion. In many cases amount of groundwater resources available for development is limited by a pre-specified limit of additional saltwater intrusion. In this paper a simple equation is developed to assess available groundwater resources which depends on the constraint of acceptable additional saltwater intrusion. Strack#s single-potential analytical solution is used to derive the equation. Available groundwater increases as more additional intrusion is allowed. However, critical points limit both the maximum pumping rate and the allowed saltwater intrusion limit. The equation is presented in the form of design curves from which the maximum pumping rate can be read off quickly. The equation and the design curves are suitable for preliminary estimation of available groundwater resources in coastal areas.

  • In this paper, the dynamic snapping of the 3-free-nodes spatial truss model was studied. A governing equation was derived considering geometric nonlinearity, and a model with various conditions was analyzed using the fourth order Runge-Kutta method. The dynamic buckling phenomenon was observed in consideration of sensitive changes to the force mode and the initial condition. In addition, the critical load level was analyzed. According to the results of the study, the level of critical buckling load elevated when the shape parameter was high. Parallelly, the same result was caused by the damping term. The sensitive asymmetrical changes showed complex orbits in the phase space, and the critical load level was also becoming lowly. In addition, as the value of damping constant was high, the level of critical load also increases. In particular, the larger the damping constant, the faster it converges to the equilibrium point, and the occurrence of snapping was suppressed.
