The purpose of this paper is to investigate the stability of tapered columns with clamped one end and carrying a tip mass of rotatory inertia with translational elastic support at the other end. The linearly tapered columns with the solid rectangular cross-section is adopted as the column taper. The differential equation governing free vibrations of such Beck columns is derived using the Bernoulli-Euler beam theory. Both the divergence and flutter critical loads are calculated from the load-frequency curves which are obtained by solving the differential equation. The critical loads are presented as functions of various non-dimensional system parameters: the taper type, the subtangential parameter, mass ratio and spring stiffness.
As the first step for the application of seismic landslide hazard maps to domestic cases, two types of hazard maps on Ul-joo from pseudostatic analysis and Newmark sliding block analysis are constructed and comllared. Arcview, the GIS program and the 1:5,000 digital maps of the test-site are used for the construction of hazard maps and tile parameters for the analyses are determined by seismic survey and laboratory tests. The results from the pseudostatic analysis have more conservative values of lower critical slope angles, although the results from the two different analyses have similar tendencies. In detail, with increasing the peak ground acceleration, the difference between the two analyses in the critical slope angle increases, while the difference decreases with increasing the maximum soil depth.
A lattice model based molecular clusters is presented to improve a classical equation of state(EOS) for volumetric properties in the critical region. The term is based on the two assumptions: (1) The Helmholtz energy is individually divided into classical and long-range density fluctuation contribution (2) All molecules form cluster near the critical region due to long-range density fluctuation. To formulate such molecular cluster, we extended the Veytsman statistics originally developed for the cluster due to hydrogen bonding. The probability function in the statistics is modified to represent the characteristics of long-range density fluctuation vanishing far from critical region. The proposed fluctuation contribution was incorporated into the Sanchez-Lacombe EOS and the combined model with 6 adjustable parameters has been tested against experimental VLE data for pure compounds. The combined model is found to well represent flatten critical isotherm for methane and top of the coexistence curve for the tested components.
A semi-empirical fluctuation term is presented to improve a classical equation of state (EOS) for volumetric properties in the critical region. The combined model is found to well represent flatten critical isotherm for methane and top of the coexistence curve for the tested components. The prediction results for caloric data are in good agreement with the experimental data.
The elastic critical load of a slender compression member plays an important role when the proper design of that member is required. For the tapered compression members, however, there are cases when the conventional neutral equililbrium or energy method can't be applied to the determination of critical loads of those members. In this paper, finite element method is applied to the approximate determination of the symmetrically tapered bars. Here in this paper, the bars are assumed to take sinusoidally changing shapes along their axes. The parameters considered in this study are taper parameter, $\alpha$ and the sectional property parameter, m. The computed results by finite element method are represented in the forms of algebraic equations. Regression technique is employed to determine the coefficients of algebraic equations. The critical loads estimated by the proposed algebraic equations coincide fairly well with those of finite element method.
As a part of International Criticality Safety Benchmark Evaluation Project (ICSBEP), SAXTON critical experiments were reevaluated. The effects on $K_{eff}$ of the uncertainties in experiment parameters, fuel rod characterization, soluble boron, critical water level, core structure, $^{241}$ Am and $^{241}$ Pu isotope number densities, random pitch error, duplicated experiment, axial fuel position, model simplification, etc., were evaluated and added in benchmark-model $k_{eff}$. In addition to detailed model, the simplified model for Saxton critical experiments was constructed by omitting the top, middle, and bottom grids and ignoring the fuel above water.r.r.

For tapered compression members, however, there are cases when the conventional neutral equilibrium or energy method can't be applied to the determination of critical loads. In this paper, the finite element method is applied to the approximate determination of the linearly tapered members. In this paper, the bars are assumed to be tapered linearly along their axes. The parameters considered in this study are taper parameter, α and the sectional property parameter, m. The member ends are either hinged or fixed. The computed results using the finite element method are represented in the forms of algebraic equations. The regression technique is employed to determine the coefficients of the algebraic equations. Critical loads estimated by the proposed algebraic equations coincide flirty well with those employing the finite element method.
The dynamic analysis of the KTX can predict the dynamic motions which occurred in test drive. In this study an analytical model of the KTX is developed to find the critical speed. The numerical analysis for the nonlinear equation motions of 17 degrees of freedom show the running stability and the critical speed due to the hunting motion of the KTX. Also, the vibration modes of the KTX are calculated using the ADAMS/RAIL software, which show that the critical speed occurs for the yawing modes of the car body and the bogie. Finally, this paper shows that the critical speed of the KTX could be changed with the modifications of the design parameters of wheel conicity and wheel contact point.
The development of railway vehicle and bogie involves the proper selection of design parameters not only to achieve high speed of the train but also to reduce the vibration. In this study, an analytical model of a high speed freight car is developed to find the critical speed. The high speed freight car can generate the snake motion of the lateral, rolling and yawing motion of the car body and the bogie. The numerical analysis for the equation motions with 17 degrees of freedom showed the running stability and the critical speed due to the snake motion. Also the vibration modes of the high speed freight car was calculated using ADAMS RAIL software, which showed that the critical speed have the yawing modes of the car body and the bogie.
