Moment Inequalities for Testing New Renewal Better Than Used and Renewal New Better Than Used Classes of Life Distributions

  • Based on moments inequalities new testing procedures are derived for testing exponentiality against new renewal better than used (NRBU) and renewal new better than used (RNBU). These classes play an important role in formulating repair or replacement policies. The asymptotic Pitman efficiency of (NRBU) and (RNBU) testes are studied. Selected critical values are tabulated for sample sizes n=5(1) 50. The power estimates for some commonly used life distributions in reliability are also calculated. Some set of real data is used as an example to elucidate the use of the proposed test statistic for practical reliability analysis. The problem in case of right-censored data is also handled.

A Moment Inequality for Exponential Better (Worse) Than Used EBU (EWU) Life Distributions with Hypothensis Testing Application

  • The exponential better (worse) than used EBU (EWU) class of life distributions is considered. A moment inequality is derived for EBU (EWU) distributions which demonstrate that if the mean life is finite, then all moments exist. Based on this inequality, a new test statistic for testing exponentiality against EBU (EWU) is introduced. It is shown that the proposed test is simple, enjoys good power and has high relative efficiency for some commonly used alternatives. Critical values are tabulated for sample sizes n = 5(1)40. A set of real data is used as a practical application of the proposed test in the medical science.

  • Torsional behaviors of beams are investigated for the web reinforcement and the concrete type. Eight beams with self-compacting concrete (SCC) and twelve beams with conventional concrete (CC) were manufactured and tested. All the models manufactured as the $250{\times}300{\times}1500mm$ were tested according to relevant standards. Two concrete types, CC and SCC were designed for 20 and 40 MPa compressive strength. From the point of web reinforcement, the web spacing was chosen as 80 and 100 mm. The rotation angles of the concrete beams subjected to pure torsional moment as well as the cracks occurring in the beams, the ultimate and critical torsional moments were observed. Moreover, the ultimate torsional moments obtained experimentally were compared with the values evaluated theoretically according to some relevant standards and theories. The closest estimations were observed for the skew-bending theory and the Australian Standard.

  • In the present work, a moment inequality is derived for new renewal better (worse) than used in expectation(NRBUE) (NRWUE) distributions.   • In order to determine the critical head values of boiling and piping, several experiments were performed for 3 cases of model dykes on 7 kinds of pervious foundations. The results obtained are as follows : 1. It appears that the coarser and the denser the foundation material, the higher the critical heads of boiling and piping, and that the lower the permeability of the foundation, the higher the critical heads of boiling and piping. 2. A difference in head between the moments of boiling and piping is greater in the case 2 or case 3 than in the case 1 because of the additional hydraulic resistance. And it is found that the coarser the foundation material, the greater the head difference. 3. The critical heads of boiling and piping is directly prortional to the seepage length. 4. The piezometric heads close to the singular point are of the same magnitude, provided that the geometry of the model dyke and foundation material are the same. 5. Variations of the weight of model dyke can not affect the critical head. According to the conclusions shown above, the critical head of piping can be more practically predicted for prototype using the results from laboratory tests on scale model.

Vibration and stability of fluid conveying pipes with stochastic parameters

  • Flexible cantilever pipes conveying fluids with high velocity are analysed for their dynamic response and stability behaviour. The Young's modulus and mass per unit length of the pipe material have a stochastic distribution. The stochastic fields, that model the fluctuations of Young's modulus and mass density are characterized through their respective means, variances and autocorrelation functions or their equivalent power spectral density functions. The stochastic non self-adjoint partial differential equation is solved for the moments of characteristic values, by treating the point fluctuations to be stochastic perturbations. The second-order statistics of vibration frequencies and mode shapes are obtained. The critical flow velocity is first evaluated using the averaged eigenvalue equation. Through the eigenvalue equation, the statistics of vibration frequencies are transformed to yield critical flow velocity statistics. Expressions for the bounds of eigenvalues are obtained, which in turn yield the corresponding bounds for critical flow velocities.

Lateral-torsional buckling resistance of composite steel beams with corrugated webs

  • In the hogging bending moment area, continuous composite beams are subjected to the ultimate limit state of lateral-torsional buckling (LTB), which depends on web stiffness as well as concrete slab and shear connection stiffnesses. The design of the LTB and the determination of the elastic critical moment are produced approximately, using the European Standard EN 1994-1-1:2004, for continuous composite steel beams, but is applicable only for those with a plane web steel profile. Also, and from the previous researches, the elastic critical moment of the continuous composite beams with corrugated sinusoidal web steel profiles was determined. In this paper, a finite element analysis (FEA) model was developed using the ANSYS 16 software, to determine the elastic critical moments of continuous composite steel beams with various corrugated web profiles, such as trapezoidal, zigzag, and rectangular profiles, which were evaluated against numerical data of the sinusoidal one from the literature. Ultimately, the failure load of a composite steel beam with various web profiles was predicted by studying 46 models, based on FEA modeling, and a procedure for predicting the elastic critical moment of composite beams with various web steel profiles was proposed. When compared to sinusoidal web profiles, the trapezoidal, zigzag, and rectangular web profiles required an average increase in load capacity and stiffness of 7%, 17.5%, and 28%, respectively, according to the finite element analysis. Also, the rectangular web steel profile has a greater stiffness and load capacity. In contrast, the sinusoidal web has lower values for these characteristics.

  • In this paper, the critical buckling temperature of single-walled Boron Nitride nanotube (SWBNNT) is estimated using a new nonlocal first-order shear deformation beam theory. The present model is capable of capturing both small scale effect and transverse shear deformation effects of SWBNNT and is based on assumption that the inplane and transverse displacements consist of bending and shear components, in which the bending components do not contribute toward shear forces and, likewise, the shear components do not contribute toward bending moments. Results indicate the importance of the small scale effects in the thermal buckling analysis of Boron Nitride nanotube.

  • This paper shows the study on the capacity of H-shape column at elevated temperature in fire. The main parameters are temperatures, slenderness ratios and load ratios. The physical properties of steel material at elevated temperatures are according to EC3 Part 1.2. The critical temperature of local buckling at elevated temperatures are lower when the yield strength of the material is higher, and when the ratios of width-thickness of plates are larger. The evaluation capacity of uniformly heated steel cloumns were considered to axial forces, moments of strong axis and weak axis to the LRFD.

  • In this study, the load analysis of a composite canard aircraft is performed numerically. Excel visual basic program for PC is used to calculate aerodynamic coefficients, loads and moments etc.. The basic data required for the load analysis such as aircraft configuration and dimension, parts and its weight and coordinate etc. are obtained from Catia modeling, measurement or material density. Aircraft weight, center of gravity, inertia moment, structural design speeds, wing load distribution, forces and moments are evaluated by using these data. V-n diagram is also represented for selecting critical loads applied to the wing and fuselage. The V-n diagram is investigated to decide the flight envelope of canard aircraft for design speed VA, VC, VD and load factor +3.8G, -1.52G at maximum weight of 2,573 lbs and sea level. In the future, the results of the wing and fuselage load analysis is to represented by using selected critical loads.
