Effect of Anhydrite on the Mechanical and Durability Properties of High Volume Slag Concrete (무수석고 함량이 고로슬래그 미분말을 대량 활용한 콘크리트 특성에 미치는 영향)

  • High volume slag concrete is attracting new attention and are thought to have promising potential for industrial applications, partly due to the climate debate, but especially due to their very low heat of hydration and their good durability in chemically aggressive environments. However, High volume slag concretes tend to have slower strength development especially. In this study, the effect of anhydrite ($CaSO_4$) on the mechanical and durability performance of high volume slag concrete were investigated. The main variables were anhydrite contents (0, 4, 6, 8, 10%). Test results show that 4~8% anhydrite concrete have improved engineering properties (hydration, compressive strength, shrinkage, creep, carbonation) as control concrete at early ages.

  • The base asphalt mixtures that used the waste recycle asphalt correcting from the four different overlay construction sites in Seoul city were made using the foamed asphalt method. The sample mixtures were made in different ratio of the recycle asphalt and new asphalt material and the performance of the mixtures of the different ratio was investigated in the laboratory. The laboratory tests includes the Marshall test, the indirect tensile test, the resilient modulus test, the creep test and the wheel tracking test. The test of the recycle foamed asphalt mixtures(RFA) were compared with the those of the recycle hot mix asphalt(RHA) mixtures. The performance of the RFA is comparable to that of the RHA. On the other hand, the indirect tensile strength of the RFA in dry condition is lower than that of RHA and the indirect tensile strength of the RFA in wet condition is much lower than that of the RHA.

  • Titanium alloys have high specific strength, excellent corrosion and wear resistance, as well as high heat-resistant strength compared to conventional steel materials. As intermetallic compounds based on Ti, TiAl alloys are becoming increasingly popular in the aerospace field because these alloys have low density and high creep properties. In spite of those advantages, the low ductility at room temperature and difficult machining performance of TiAl and $Ti_3Al$ materials has limited their potential applications. Titanium powder can be used in such cases for weight and cost reduction. Herein, pre-forms of Ti-Al-xMn powder alloys are fabricated by compression forming. In this process, Ti powder is added to Al and Mn powders and compressed, and the resulting mixture is subjected to various sintering temperature and holding times. The density of the powder-sintered specimens is measured and evaluated by correlation with phase formation, Mn addition, Kirkendall void, etc. Strong Al-Mn reactions can restrain Kirkendall void formation in Ti-Al-xMn powder alloys and result in increased density of the powder alloys. The effect of Al-Mn reactions and microstructural changes as well as Mn addition on the high-temperature compression properties are also analyzed for the Ti-Al-xMn powder alloys.

Determination of structural behavior of Bosporus suspension bridge considering construction stages and different soil conditions

  • In this paper, it is aimed to determine the structural behavior of suspension bridges considering construction stages and different soil conditions. Bosporus Suspension Bridge connecting the Europe and Asia in Istanbul is selected as an example. Finite element model of the bridge is constituted using SAP2000 program considering existing drawings. Geometric nonlinearities are taken into consideration in the analysis using P-Delta large displacement criterion. The time dependent material strength of steel and concrete and geometric variations is included in the analysis. Time dependent material properties are considered as compressive strength, aging, shrinkage and creep for concrete, and relaxation for steel. To emphases the soil condition effect on the structural behavior of suspension bridges, each of hard, medium and soft soils are considered in the analysis. The structural behavior of the bridge at different construction stages and different soil conditions has been examined. Two different finite element analyses with and without construction stages are carried out and results are compared with each other. At the end of the analyses, variation of the displacement and internal forces such as bending moment, axial forces and shear forces for bridge deck and towers are given in detail. Also, displacement and stresses for bridge foundation are given with detail. It can be seen from the analyses that there are some differences between both analyses (with and without construction stages) and the results obtained from the construction stages are bigger. It can be stated that the analysis without construction stages cannot give the reliable solutions. In addition, soil condition have effect on the structural behavior of the bridge. So, it is thought that construction stage analysis using time dependent material properties, geometric nonlinearity and soil conditions effects should be considered in order to obtain more realistic structural behavior of suspension bridges.

  • Dispersions of non-soluble ceramic particles in a metallic matrix can enhance the strength and heat resistance of materials. With the advent of mechanical alloying it became possible to put the theoretical concept into practice by incorporating very fine particles in a flirty uniform distribution into often oxidation- and corrosion- resistant metal matrices. e.g. superalloys. The present paper will give an overview about the mechanical alloying technique as a dry, high energy ball milling process for producing composite metal powders with a fine controlled microstructure. The common way is milling of a mixture of metallic and nonmetallic powders (e.g. oxides. carbides, nitrides, borides) in a high energy ball mill. The heavy mechanical deformation during milling causes also fracture of the ceramic particles to be distributed homogeneously by further milling. The mechanisms of the process are described. To obtain a homogeneous distribution of nano-sized dispersoids in a more ductile matrix (e.g. aluminium-or copper based alloys) a reaction milling is suitable. Dispersoid can be formed in a solid state reaction by introducing materials that react with the matrix either during milling or during a subsequent heat treatment. The pre-conditions for obtaining high quality materials, which require a homogeneous distribution of small dis-persoids, are: milling behaviour of the ductile phase (Al, Cu) will be improved by the additives (e.g. graphite), homogeneous introduction of the additives into the granules is possible and the additive reacts with the matrix or an alloying element to form hard particles that are inert with respect to the matrix also at elevated temperatures. The mechanism of the in-situ formation of dispersoids is described using copper-based alloys as an example. A comparison between the in-situ formation of dispersoids (TiC) in the copper matrix and the milling of Cu-TiC mixtures is given with respect to the microstructure and properties, obtained.

Drying Shrinkage of Ultra High Strength Steel-Fiber Reinforced Cementitious Composites (초고강도 강섬유 보강 시멘트 복합체의 건조수축에 관한 연구)

  • When UHSFRC is applied to structures, it can be expected that it shows excellent performance in a point of constructability and load capacity. However, its rich mix can cause some problems concerning the long-term behavior such as shrinkage and creep. Therefore it is inevitably needed to investigate its long-term behavior in order to apply it to structures safely. This study is dealing with the drying shrinkage of UHSFRC. UHSFRC shows relatively fast drying shrinkage in the early exposed ages and slow moisture diffusion caused by compact microstructure of the material. It was found that The KCI model to predict the drying shrinkage did not properly represent these properties of UHSFRC. therefore a modified drying shrinkage model applicable to UHSFRC, which has different shrinkage properties from that of normal concrete, was proposed

Effect of Cr2O3-MgO-Y2O3 Addition on Mechanical Properties of Mullite Ceramics (Cr2O3-MgO-Y2O3 첨가에 따른 뮬라이트 세라믹스의 기계적 성질)

  • Mullite ($3Al_2O_3{\cdot}2SiO_2$) has emerged as a promising candidate for high-temperature structural materials due to its erosion resistance, chemical and thermal stabilities, relatively low thermal expansion coefficient, excellent thermal shock and creep resistances, and low dielectric constant. However, since the pure mullite sintering temperature is as high as $1,600{\sim}1,700^{\circ}C$, there is an increasing need for a sintering additive capable of improving the strength characteristics while lowering the sintering temperature. Herein we have tried to obtain the optimal sintering additive composition by adding MgO, $Cr_2O_3$, and $Y_2O_3$ to mullite, followed by sintering at $1,325{\sim}1,550^{\circ}C$ for 2 h. With additives of 2 wt% of MgO, 2 wt% of $Cr_2O_3$, 4 wt% of $Y_2O_3$, A density of $3.23g/cm^3$ was obtained for the sintered body at $1,350^{\circ}C$ upon using 2 wt% MgO, 2 wt% $Cr_2O_3$, and 4 wt% $Y_2O_3$ as additives. The three-point flexural strength of that was 275 MPa and the coefficient of thermal expansion (CTE) was $4.15ppm/^{\circ}C$.

An Experimental Study on the Modelling for the Prediction of the Behaviour of EPS (EPS의 거동 예측 모델에 관한 실험적 연구)

  • Recently, EPS which has unit weight of only 20~30kg/m3, is used for acquiring the safety of settlement and bearing capacity, In Korea, EPS was first used in 1993 as backfill material for abutment that was constructed on soft ground in Inchon. Since then EPS has been used increasingly as backfill material. However, adequate modelling has not yet been proposed for the prediction of the behavior of EPS. Only it's design strength was proposed as the results of unconfined strength and creep test. Accordingly this paper executed triaxial compression test on EPS with various density and confining pressure. Through the analysis of test data the behavior of EPS for strainstress, tangential modulus and poisson's ratio can be expressed in functions with parameters of density and confining pressure of EPS. From these results, this paper proposed a nonliner model describing the behavior of EPS.

  • The EPS has the unit weight of only 20~30kg/m3 and is used as one of the methods of reducing road embankment loads. Parts of it's applications are for backfill materials of structures like abutment, retaining wall, etc., to reduce horizontal earth pressure and for banking materials to secure the safety of settlement and bearing capacity by minimizing the stress Increment. However, the Korean Standards (KS) has not yet proposed any testing method for use of EPS as a engineering banking material. Only its testing and quality ordinance as a heat insulation material has been standardized. Therefore, in Korea, EPS is used as banking material without any systematic testing data as a civil engineering material. In this point of view, this paper deals with the engineering characteristics of EPS through many laboratory tests on strength, strain, absorption, and creep. from the results achived through tests, this paper proposes the enactment of a suitable quality testing ordinance and the criteria of unconfined design strength of EPS for use as engineering material.

Study on the Improvement of Weld-joint Reliability in Waterwall Tubes of the Ultra Supercritical Coal Fired Boiler (석탄화력발전용 초초임계압(USC) 보일러 수냉벽 튜브 용접 신뢰성 향상에 대한 연구)

  • The low alloy-steel material(1.0Cr-0.5Mo, SA213T12), which has widely been used for the waterwall tube in the conventional power plant, do not have enough creep rupture strength for waterwall tubes of the Ultra-supercritical(USC) boilers. According to this reason, the high-strength low alloy-steel(2.25Cr-1.0Mo, SA213T22) has newly been adopted for the waterwall tube in the USC boilers. This paper presents failure analysis on weld-joint of the waterwall tubes in USC boilers. Visual inspections were performed to find out the characteristics of the fracture. Additionally both microscopic characteristics and hardness test were carried out on failed tube samples. Failures seem to happen mainly because the welding process has not been conducted strictly.(preheating, P.W.H.T and so forth). Thus, this paper has the purpose to describe the main cause of the poor welding process and to explain how to prevent similar failures in those weld-joints.
