A reinforced concrete building neighboring in Pusan or Ulsan where is directly exposed to salt water contrasting with other in land areas contains much salt content percolated from the outside that the high salt content percolates and diffuses through the inside of reinforced concrete; therefore, an immovable tunic surrounding it begins to be destroyed and eroded with high speed. At the time, the cross-sectional area and volume expansion of re-bar reinforcing result in being cracks make a rapid progress gradually until they appear in the surface of the one, the phenomenon such as being a thin layer or falling off the part of it causes a lowering of its durability and might collapse the concrete construction. So far, we've investigated into salt content of reinforced concrete constructions neighboring in a seaside district and damage by carbonation, and we came to a conclusion as follows: $\circled1$ Under the oceanic circumstance a concrete construction is influenced by sea water directly that contains much amount of salt content contrasting with other constructions on inland areas. $\circled2$ Because of chloride penetration the carbonation of reinforced concrete made a rapid progress until more than the covering thickness of re-bar. $\circled3$ An old reinforced concrete building which has been piled up salt injury and proceeding the carbonation of its cross-sectional area. $\circled4$ According to rapidly cracking from the inside to surface of reiforced concrete, the phenomenon of being a thin layer or falling off the part of reinforced concrete results in a lowering of durability and shortening the life-time of concrete construction itself.

The size and distribution of welding residual stress and welding deformation in welding structures have an effect on various sorts of damage like brittle failure, fatigue failure and stress corrosion cracking. So, research for this problem is necessary continuously. In this study, non-destructive technique using laser electronic speckle pattern interferometry, plate of welding specimen according to the external load on the entire behavior of residual stress are presented measurement techniques. Once, welding specimen force tensile loading, using electronic speckle pattern interferometry is measured. welding specimen of base metal and weld zone measure strain from measured result, this using measure elastic modulus. In this study, electronic speckle pattern interferometry use weld zone and base metal parts of the strain differences using were presented in residual stress calculated value, This residual stress value were calculated by numerical calculation. Consequently, weld zone of modulus high approximately 3.7 fold beside base metal and this measured approximately 8.46 MPa.

In order to investigate the damage mechanism of the coupler transferring LPG, microstructural observation and chemical analysis of the couplers operated for the long time in the LPG stations and virgin 6/4 forged-brass corrosion-tested were conducted. Their microstructure was consisted of two phases that bright $\beta$ precipitates were irregularly dispersed in $\alpha$ matrix. The chemical compositions of oxide layer on the surface of the used coupler were composed of S, C, O, Al, Si, etc. as well as Cu and Zn. In environmental corrosion tests of both $10\%$ HCl and Mattsson solutions, no apparent deviations in mechanical impact strength of forged-brass was observed. While, in U-bend stress corrosion cracking specimen, some microcracks were observed.

An investigation has been made on the relationship between characteristics of Acoustic Emission (AE) signal in welding flaw and the stress corrosion defect in-service for the high pressure pipe steel. In order to tackle the problem of welding flaw in high pressure pipe, specimens were made by the aid of the application of both corrosion liquid usage and a quenching method after local heating. The amplitude of signal was $60{\sim}75\;dB$ in the territory which is suspected for defect, and the specimens which only have welding flaw showed gradients of 0.034, 0.034, 0.035. Moreover, there is a certain increase in gradient even though the differences are very slight. That is, corrosion specimens showed new gradients of 0.040, 0.039, 0.041 which put welding flaw and corrosion mechanism together. After pressurizing 3 minutes, AE signal has been detected from welding flaw easily in each part of the section. It is possible to predict the occurrence and also prevent the damage of stress corrosion crack which has characteristics of cleavage fracture.

Crack detection technique for concrete structures has been developed in this study. Experimental tests were carried out to detect a surface and internal crack, employing common fiber optic cables and OTDR(optical time domain reflectometry), an optical signal analyzer which is widely used to detect damages at fiber optic cables in the field of optical engineering. While initial concrete crack is ready to occur under cracking force, the occurrence and location of the crack are simultaneously detected to give the same damage to fiber optic cables which have been attached to and/or embedded into concrete in advance. It is obtained through successive tests that the principal factors for crack detection is the covering state of fiber optic cable, and total 4 tests including a preliminary test were conducted and the crack detection technique was verified. The practical usefulness would be expected at crack management and maintenance of concrete structures.
The Bayon style Avalokitesvara statue from the $13^{th}$ century Angkor period is on display at the Cambodia Angkor Conservation Office. This statue is composed of dark green felthspathic greywacke, the surface of which has been shown light brown discoloration, detected calcite crystallization. As a result of condition assessment, the statue was damaged due to overlap scaling and cracking. Ultrasonic tests have investigated remarkable physical weathering area, flaking and fragmentation in lower velocity. The physical condition of the statue requires a conservation method that improves the binding power. To protect against salt weathering and to ensure physical stability, new conservation material composed of mixed ethyl silicate and sandstone powder similar to that composing the statue was created. The material affected by damage was removed and replaced with the new conservation material.
PURPOSES : This purpose of this study is to analyze the effect to autogenous shrinkage of the top-layer material of a two-lift concrete pavement mixing both silica fume and polymer powder. METHODS : The bottom-layer of a two-lift concrete pavement was paved with original portland cement (OPC) with a 20~23 cm thickness. Additionally, the top-layer which is directly exposed to the environment and vehicles was paved with a high-performance concrete (HPC) with a 7~10 cm thickness. These types of pavements can achieve a long service life by reducing joint damage and increasing the abrasion and scaling resistance. In order to integrate the different bottom and top layer materials, autogenous shrinkage tests were performed in this study according to the mixing ratio of silica fume and polymer powder, which are the admixture of the top-layer material. RESULTS : Autogenous shrinkage decreased when polymer powder was used in the mix. Contrary to this, autogenous shrinkage tended to rise with increasing silica fume content. However, the effects were not significant when small amounts of polymer powder were used (3% and 11%). CONCLUSIONS : The durability and compressive strength increase when silica fume is used in the mix. The flexural strength considerably increases and autogenous shrinkage of concrete decreases when polymer powder is used in the mix. As seen from above, the proper use of these materials improves not only durability, but also autogenous shrinkage, leading to better shrinkage crack control in the concrete.

The effect of thermal stress on a ship's hull is not considered to be serious by most naval architects. Frequently, however, cracking of hulls has been reported which occurred at sea while there were no external forces except the heat from the sun. Detailed investigations have been made of these reports and it has been reliably determined that the damage was initiated by solar heating. The author is not interested in all steel ship or in the applicability and validity of the formular itself, as it has already been proven by the experiments such as S.S. Boulder Victory. The author therefore proceeds directly to calculate the stress distribution on he hull and superstructure of the prototype model ship. These calculations are based on the experimental nonsymetrical temperature gradient data taken earlier on the Boulder Victory. The calculations were made principally to determine the extent of stresses which occurred on an all-steel ship in one case and secondly, those that occurred on a ship with a steel hull and an aluminum superstructure. From the calculations, the author expected the stress distribution of the two case would show distinctly different aspects, but the acquired results were very similar. Generally, at the point of junction of the steel hull and aluminum superstructure sharp peak stresses appeared. At the juncture of the superstructure and the main deck the ship with the aluminum superstructure registered almost 1000 psi more stress than did the ship with the all-steel construction. In the view of these findings, the author recommends to ship designers that pay particular attention to the point of junction of steel and aluminum plate. The author has proven that it is extremely important that a greater safety factor be used at the aluminum-steel junction point than at any other point. Although thermal effects cause high juncture-point stresses in all-steel ships, they are not nearly as critical as in ship constructed of two or more metals.

Reinforced concrete structures have an excellent durability under a good construction and continuous maintenance. But reinforced concrete construction is influenced by atmospheric phenomena and it is creating a deterioration. One of the deterioration cause on concrete is a freezing and thawing action. Freezing and thawing leads to the reduction in concrete durability by the cracking or surface spalling. If we are carried out freezing and thawing, deterioration of reinforced concrete construction will be reduction. Therefore, this study was performed to investigate the flexural behavior of reinforced concrete beams exposed to freezing and thawing cycles. Thee presence of damage and cycles were considered as variablees in this study.

Building hardware joints are welded in most cases, which have risks of fire and explosion. Besides, the secondary damage of the destruction of the welded parts can be caused by the horizontal displacement of the structure due to earthquake or wind load. This paper compared the horizontal displacement following abilities of welded building hardware and non-welded building hardware. To do this, We conducted actual formation shake table test, and checked on the horizontal displacement following ability of structure by comparing their responses to earthquake load. We made the 2m-high framework to examine the responses of the actually constructed building hardwares, and analyzed the displacement responses of the welded-typed, non-welded-typed, and cruciform bracket building hardwares. We conducted the test by increasing acceleration rate until displacement reached 40mm corresponding to allowable relative story displacement II. The result of the test showed that the building hardware using welding work made cracking and breakage on welded connections of welded building hardware, but non-welded building hardware with no use of welding work and cruciform bracket building hardware make no problem, and that non-welded building hardware is superior to that of the welded building hardware in the horizontal displacement following ability due to earthquake or wind load.
