poly(acrylic acid)(PAA)-poly(vinyl alcohol)(PVA) membranes have been prepared by crosslinking reaction between the carboxylic acid groups of PAA and the hydroxylic groups of PVA. In the measurements of the swelling and preferential sorption of the membranes, sorption behaviors of the membranes in pure water, pure acetic acid and a mixture of them have been investigated, respectively. From the measurements of the preferential sorption in 90wt% acetic acid of aqueous mixture, the sorption of water component was found to be more enhanced at high PAA content in the membrane than that of acetic acid component due to the interaction of water with acetic acid. The sorption behavior and the degree of crosslinking influenced competitively the permeation behavior of permeants. Permeation behavior of perrecants through the membranes was analyzed by using permeation activation energies which had been obtained from the Arrhenius plots of fluxes.
In the present study, a mechanical model is applied to account the effects of the surrounding viscoelastic media on the buckling behavior of single microfilament within the cell. The model immeasurably associates filament's bending rigidity, neighboring system elasticity, and cytosol viscosity with buckling wavelengths, buckling growth rates and buckling amplitudes of the filament. Cytoskeleton components in living cell bear large compressive force and are responsible in maintaining the cell shape. Actually these filaments are surrounded by viscoelastic media consisting of other filaments network and viscous cytosole within the cell. This surrounding, viscoelastic media affects the buckling behavior of these filaments when external force is applied on these filaments. The obtained results, indicate that the coupling of viscoelastic media with the viscous cytosol greatly affect the buckling behavior of microfilament. The buckling forces increased with the increase in the intensity of surrounding viscoelastic media.
Metallic shape memory alloys present fascinating physical properties such as their super-elastic behavior in austenite phase, which can be exploited for providing a structure with both a self-centering capability and an increased ductility. More or less accurate numerical models have been introduced to model their behavior along the last 25 years. This is the reason for which the literature is rich of suggestions/proposals on how to implement this material in devices for passive and semi-active control. Nevertheless, the thermo-mechanical coupling characterizing the first-order martensite phase transformation process results in several macroscopic features affecting the alloy performance. In particular, the effects of day-night and winter-summer temperature excursions require special attention. This aspect might imply that the deployment of some devices should be restricted to indoor solutions. A further aspect is the dependence of the behavior from the geometry one adopts. Two fundamental lacks of symmetry should also be carefully considered when implementing a SMA-based application: the behavior in tension is different from that in compression, and the heating is easy and fast whereas the cooling is not. This manuscript focuses on the passive devices recently proposed in the literature for civil engineering applications. Based on the challenges above identified, their actual feasibility is investigated in detail and their long term performance is discussed with reference to their fatigue life. A few available semi-active solutions are also considered.
The need for establishing the contribution of pultruded FRP encasements and additional FRP wraps around these encasements to the shear strength and load-deflection behavior of reinforced concrete beams is the main motivation of the present study. This paper primarily focuses on the effect of additional wrapping around the composite beam on the flexural and shear behavior of the pultruded GFRP (Glass Fiber Reinforced Polymer) beams infilled with reinforced concrete, taking into account different types of failure according to av/H ratio (arch action, shear-tension, shear-compression and pure bending). For this purpose, nine hybrid beams with variable shear span-to-depth ratio (av/H) were tested. Hybrid beams with 500 mm, 1000 mm, and 1500 mm lengths and cross-sections of 150x100 mm and 100x100 mm were tested under three-point and four-point loading. Based on the testing load-displacement relationship, ductility ratio, energy dissipation capacity of the beams were evaluated with comprehensive macro damage analysis on pultruded GFRP profile and GFRP wrapping. The GFRP wraps were established to have a major contribution to the composite beam ductility (90-125%) and strength (40-75%) in all ranges of beam behavior (shear-dominated or dominated by the coupling of shear and flexure). The composite beams with wraps were showns to reach ductilities and strength values of their counterparts with much greater beam depth.

This study presents a numerical model to predict the behavior of frost layer growth. The characteristics of the heat and mass transfer inside the frost layer are analyzed by coupling the air flow with the frost layer. The present model is validated by comparing with the several other analytical models. It has been known that most of the previous models cause considerable errors depending on the working conditions or correlations used in predicting the frost thickness growth, whereas the model in this work estimates the thickness of the frost layer more accurately within an error of 10% in comparison with the experimental data. Simulation results are presented for variations of heat and mass transfer during the frost formation and for the behavior of frost layer growth along the direction of air flow.
A new first-order shear deformation theory is developed for dynamic behavior of functionally graded beams. The equations governing the axial and transverse deformations of functionally graded plates are derived based on the present first-order shear deformation plate theory and the physical neutral surface concept. There is no stretching-bending coupling effect in the neutral surface based formulation, and consequently, the governing equations and boundary conditions of functionally graded beams based on neutral surface have the simple forms as those of isotropic plates. The accuracy of the present solutions is verified by comparing the obtained results with the existing solutions.
This paper investigates coupled thermal, mechanical and hydraulic phenomena in deep rock mass especially for underground heat storage system. Firstly, concepts of underground heat storage were presented and coupling phenomena in this area were illustrated. In order to understand the basic mechanism of thermal, hydraulic and deformation behavior in rock cavern disturbed by thermal gradient about 10$0^{\circ}C$, various numerical experiments were conducted using several codes. The study involves the behavior of fractured rock mass including rock joint. In spite of the limitation of codes modelling fully coupled effects, these codes could be applied in analysis of underground heat storage. The heat loss in rock mass, which is a major factor in heat storage, is insignificant in all results.

A great deal of attention is focused on coupled Thermo-Hydro-Mechanical (THM) behavior of multiphase porous media in diverse geo-mechanical and geo-environmental areas. This paper presents general governing equations for coupled THM processes in unsaturated porous media. Coupled partial differential equations are derived from 3 mass balances equations (solid, water, and air), energy balance equation, and force equilibrium equation. Finite element code is developed from the Galerkin formulation and time integration of these governing equations for 4 main variables (displacement $\underline{u}$, gas pressure $P_g$, liquid pressure $P_l$), and temperature T). The code is validated with theoretical solutions for linear material with simple boundary conditions.

In this paper a dynamic behavior of a cracked cantilever pipe conveying fluid with the moving mass is presented. It has the results focused on the frequency change. Based on the Euler-Bernouli beam theory, the equation of motion can be constructed by using the Lagrange's equation. The crack section is represented by a local flexibility matrix connecting two undamaged beam segments. The crack is assumed to be in the first mode of fracture and to be always opened during the vibrations. When the velocity of the moving mass is constant, the influences of the crack severity, the position of the crack, the moving mass, and the coupling of these factors on the frequencies of the cantilever pipe are depicted.

Many enzymes require the participation of readily dissociable coenzymes as NAD for thir catalytic activities. The continuous utilization of the enzymes requires the retention and regeneration of the coenzymes. For this purpose, several kinds of macromolecular NAD derivatives have been prepared by covalently attaching NAD to watersoluble polymers. We have prepared poly (ethylene glycol)-bound NAD (PEG-NAD) by coupling N$\^$6/-(2-carboxyethyl)-NAD to one terminal of ${\gamma}$$\omega$-diaminoly (ethylene glycol) (Mr 3000) with water-soluble carbodiimide. PED-NAD thus obtained has one NAD moiety located at a terminal of the linear, flexible and hydrophilic chain of poly (ethylene glycol). PED-NAD has good coenzyme activity for various dehydrogenases and is applicable in a continuous enzyme reactor. To use these macromolecular NAD derivatives in an enzyme reactor, it si necessary to understand the behavior of the system in which the reactions of dehydrogenases are coupled by the recycling of the NAD derivative. We investigated the kinetic properties of a continuous enzyme reactor containing lactate dehydrogenase, alcohol dehydrogenase and PEG-NAD. The steady-state behavior of the enzyme reactor is explained by a simple kinetic model.
