  • Using non-biodegradable polymers is a severe environmental problem as they are not recyclable and generate a large amount of waste. Biopolymers, such as starch-based composites, have been considered one of the most promising replacement materials. These eco-friendly materials have the advantage of being low-cost, biodegradable, and obtained from renewable sources. However, as starch tends to be brittle and hydrophilic, it can make these materials unusable when exposed to water and limit its processability for further applications. In this work, a biobased modified starch was grafted using two bioderived materials, lauryl methacrylate (LMA) and tetrahydrofurfuryl methacrylate (THFMA), by radical polymerization. A polylactic acid (PLA) composite based on the modified starch (m-St) was fabricated to enhance its toughness. These samples were characterized by Fourier transform infrared, 1H NMR and 13C NMR analysis, optical and scanning electron microscopy. The starch was successfully grafted, thus improving the compatibility with the PLA matrix. The mechanical properties of these films were also studied. Results from mechanical tests showed a slight enhancement of the mechanical performance of these composites when m-St was added to the PLA matrix. Such behavior is related to the improved dispersion of m-St 1:2 on PLA, confirmed by SEM images showing enhanced compatibility between modified starch and PLA matrix. This indicated excellent properties of the produced composite film for further eco-friendly applications.

  • Active-matrix field emission display (AMFED) based on carbon nanotube (CNT) emitter and amorphous silicon thin-film transistor (a-Si TFT) is reviewed. The AMFED pixels consisted of a high-voltage a-Si TFT and mesh-gated CNT emitters. The developed AMFED panel showed a high performance with a driving voltage of below 15 V. The low-cost and large-area AMFED approach with a metal mesh technology will be discussed.

  • The polypropylene(PP) fiber is poised as a low cost alternative for reinforcement in structural applications in comparison with other high performance fibers, such as the polyvinyl-alcohol(PVA), polyethylene, carbon and aramid fiber. The mechanical properties of the composite are strongly determined by the interfacial behavior of fiber and cementitious matrix. The crack bridging mechanism contribute to composite toughness from activation of the fiber-matrix interface where energy is dissipated through debonding of the interface and fiber pullout. In this study, therefore, the pullout behavior of PP fibers is investigated. Experimental work includes the investigation of the interfacial properties, and the composite property. The quantification of interfacial properties, the frictional bond is achieved through single fiber pullout test. A study on the effect of inclination angle on fiber pullout behavior is also conducted.

  • In this research, we propose a speaker identification system using a kernel method which is expected to model the non-linearity of speech features well. We have been using principal component analysis (PCA) successfully, and extended to kernel PCA, which is used for many pattern recognition tasks such as face recognition. However, we cannot use kernel PCA for speaker identification directly because the storage required for the kernel matrix grows quadratically, and the computational cost grows linearly (computing eigenvector of $l{\times}l$ matrix) with the number of training vectors I. Therefore, we use greedy kernel PCA which can approximate kernel PCA with small representation error. In the experiments, we compare the accuracy of the greedy kernel PCA with the baseline Gaussian mixture models using MFCCs and PCA. As the results with limited enrollment data show, the greedy kernel PCA outperforms conventional methods.

  • The use of frequency-dependent spectral element matrix (or exact dynamic stiffness matrix) in structural dynamics is known to provide very accurate solutions, while reducing the number of degrees-of-freedom to resolve the computational and cost problems. Thus, in the present paper, the spectral element model is formulated for the axially moving Timoshenko beam under a uniform axial tension. The high accuracy of the present spectral element is then verified by comparing its solutions with the conventional finite element solutions and exact analytical solutions. The effects of the moving speed and axial tension on the vibration characteristics, the dispersion relation, and the stability of a moving Timoshenko beam are investigated, analytically and numerically.

  • The current paper presents application of a new analytic solution in general relative motion to spacecraft formation flying in an elliptic orbit. The calculus of variations is used to analytically find optimal trajectories and controls for the given problem. The inverse of the fundamental matrix associated with the dynamic equations is not required for the solution in the current study. It is verified that the optimal thrust vector is a function of the fundamental matrix of the given state equations. The cost function and the state vector during the reconfiguration can be analytically obtained as well. The results predict the form of optimal solutions in advance without having to solve the problem. Numerical simulation shows the brevity and the accuracy of the general analytic solutions developed in the current paper.

  • The introduction of the fast Fourier transform(FFT),an efficient computational algorithm for the discrete Fourier transform(DFT) by Cooley and Tukey(1965), has brought to the limelight various other discrete transforms. Some of the analog functions from which these transforms have been derived date back to the early 1920's, for example, Walsh functions (Walsh, 1923) and Hadamard Transform(Enomoto et al, 1965). Fast algorithms developed for the forward transform are equally applicable, exept for minor changes, to the inverse transform. In this paper, we present a simple pipelined Hadamard matrix(HM) which is used to develop a fast algorithm for the Hadamard Processor (HP). The Fast Hadamard Transform(FHT) can be derived using matrix partitioning techniques. The HP system is incorporated through a modular design which permits tailoring to meet a wide range of video data link applications. Emphasis has been placed on a low cost, a low power design suitable for airbone system and video codec.

  • Generally, it is not easy to get a suitable controller for multi variable systems. If the modeling equation of the system can be found, it is possible to get LQR control as an optimal solution. This paper suggests an LQR learning method to design LQR controller without the modeling equation. The proposed algorithm uses the same cost function with error and input energy as LQR is used, and the LQR controller is trained to reduce the function. In this training process, the Jacobian matrix that informs the converging direction of the controller Is used. Jacobian means the relationship of output variations for input variations and can be approximately found by the simple experiments. In the simulations of a hydrofoil catamaran with multi variables, it can be confirmed that the training of LQR controller is possible by using the approximate Jacobian matrix instead of the modeling equation and this controller is not worse than the traditional LQR controller.
