  • Mesodinium rubrum is a cosmopolitan ciliate that often causes red tides. Predation by heterotrophic protists is a critical factor that affects the population dynamics of red tide species. However, there have been few studies on protistan predators feeding on M. rubrum. To investigate heterotrophic protists grazing on M. rubrum, we tested whether the heterotrophic dinoflagellates Gyrodiniellum shiwhaense, Gyrodinium dominans, Gyrodinium spirale, Luciella masanensis, Oblea rotunda, Oxyrrhis marina, Pfiesteria piscicida, Polykrikos kofoidii, Protoperidinium bipes, and Stoeckeria algicida, and the ciliate Strombidium sp. preyed on M. rubrum. G. dominans, L. masanensis, O. rotunda, P. kofoidii, and Strombidium sp. preyed on M. rubrum. However, only G. dominans had a positive growth feeding on M. rubrum. The growth and ingestion rates of G. dominans on M. rubrum increased rapidly with increasing mean prey concentration < $321ngCmL^{-1}$, but became saturated or slowly at higher concentrations. The maximum growth rate of G. dominans on M. rubrum was $0.48d^{-1}$, while the maximum ingestion rate was 0.55 ng C $predator^{-1}d^{-1}$. The grazing coefficients by G. dominans on populations of M. rubrum were up to $0.236h^{-1}$. Thus, G. dominans may sometimes have a considerable grazing impact on populations of M. rubrum.

  • Purpose - We perform an empirical analysis of the effects of global consumer culture positioning (GCCP) in TV advertisements on consumer's brand evaluations (perceived quality, perceived price, and brand prestige) and attitude toward brand. Also, we analyze the moderating roles of consumer characteristics (ethnocentrism and level of product knowledge) in those effects. Design/methodology - This research is based on a survey of 210 randomly-selected university students in Seoul, Korea. The participants in the survey were shown a total of 8 TV advertisements of consumer goods of nondurable goods (fast food and carbonated drinks), and durable goods (sports shoes and digital camera), which included two advertisements for each product where one uses GCCP strategy while another uses LCCP strategy. We estimate the structural model using the AMOS 18.0 computer program. Findings - We find that GCCP has more positive effects on consumers' brand evaluations and attitude toward brand than LCCP in TV advertising. We also find that GCCP has stronger effects on brand evaluation and attitude toward brand in consumers with weak ethnocentrism and in those with a low level of product knowledge. Practical implications - Using GCCP in an advertisement is an effective way of improving consumer's evaluation of the brand and attitude toward the brand mainly when cosmopolitan consumers and consumers with low knowledge levels are segmented as targets. Originality/value - The study contributes to identify how and for what consumer groups' global brand positioning strategies in TV advertisements affect consumers' brand evaluations and their attitudes toward brands.

  • This paper aims at tracing the appearance of Italy in W. H. Auden's poems. Auden summered on Ischia, an island in the Gulf of Naples, between 1948 and 1957. In the process of ten years of contact with Italy, Auden' poetry developed out of Italy, and contributed to the world's picture of Italy by English poets. In the early part of his stay, Auden was fascinated with Italy and found a source of vitality for composing his poems. But Auden's initial view of Italian culture evolved from extolling its virtues to a more critical one weighing its losses and benefits. The happiest mood is reflected in "In Praise of Limestone", in which the ground itself becomes a symbol of Eden. "Ischia" introduces the real landscape of the island. Auden partly admits the darkness of the island in the aspects of its past history and legends, but the poem is still mainly about praising the beauty of the island and the comfort that it gives to the poet. In "Goodbye to the Mezzogiorno" the negative side of the island's life comes to light. There was something in the setting, warm and beautiful as it was, that no longer suited Auden's temperament and Auden bids farewell to his Mediterranean period. His view of Italy is a restricted and detached one seen through the eyes of a successful Anglo-American poet. Auden's cosmopolitan character often is defined such terms as "the Wandering Jew," "alien" or "stateless Auden". But our reading of his poems dealing with Italy reveals his true characteristics which can not transcend his evolving views.

  • Cryptosporidium, a coccidian parasite first described by Tyzzer (1907) from a laboratory mouse, has become an important human enteric pathogen causing overwhelming diarrhea especially in immunocompromised patients such as AIDS. This parasite has been reported from over 20 countries and is recognized as a cosmopolitan species. In Korea, however, thEre has been no report on human as well as animal cryptosporidiosis. This study was performed so as to verify the presence of Cryptosporidium in Korea by activating the parasite from laboratory mice by immunosuppression. Total 65 conventionally.bred ICR mice including a control (5 mice) and 3 experimental groups (20 each) were used for this study. Group I was immunosuppressed with Prednisolone injection (1 mg IM, every other day) for 7 weeks. Group II (prednisolone injection and tetracycline administration) and Group III. (prednisolone injection and trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole administration) were prepared to observe the effect of antibacterial agents on the activation of cryptosporidiosis. In fecal examinations of mice Cryptosporidium oocysts($4-6{\mu\textrm{m}}$ in size) were detected from 1 week after the start of immunosuppression and the mice began to die. In H-E stained tissue sections of the lower jejunum, numerous very small ($2~4{\;}{\mu\textrm{m}}$), dense, ovoid or spherical, slightly basophilic bodies were seen attached on the free border of mucosal epithelial cells. In scanning and transmission electron microscopic observations, these organisms were identified as various developmental stages of Cryptosperidium. The species is considered to be C. parvum. Cryptosporidiosis was activated not only in Group I but also in Group II and III, indicating no protective effects of the antibacterial agents used, although the mice in Group II and III lived longer than those in Group I. The present study confirmed that Cryptosporidium exists in laboratory mice bred in Korea, and predicts possible occurrence of human cryptosporidiosis in Korea.

  • Mercury known as quicksilver, is the most common cause of heavy metal toxicity. Toxicity caused by excessive mercury exposure is now being recognized as a widespread environmental problem and is continuing to attract a great deal of public concerns. The mercury genotoxicity could be its effect on DNA repair mechanisms, which constitute the defense system designated to protect genome integrity. The objective of this study is to confirm that mercuric chloride inhibits the repair of gamma ray-induced DNA damage. The earthworm of Eisenia fetida was chosen for this study because it is an internationally accepted model species for toxicity testing with a cosmopolitan distribution. Experiments were done to identify the levels of DNA damage and the repair kinetics in the coelomocytes of E. fetida irradiated with 20 Gy gamma rays alone or with gamma rays after 40 mg $kg^{-1}$ $HgCl_2$ treatment by means of the single cell gel electrophoresis assay. The Olive tail moments were measured during 0~96 hours after irradiation. The repair time in the animals treated with the combination of $HgCl_2$ and ionizing radiation was nearly five times longer than that in the animals treated with ionizing radiation alone. Also, E. fetida exposed to mercury showed a statistically lower repair efficiency of gamma ray-induced DNA damage. The results suggest that the mercury could even have deleterious effects on the DNA repair system. Influence of mercury on the DNA repair mechanisms has been confirmed by this study.

  • Except for a cosmopolitan and major pest of apples, Tetranychus urticae Koch, Tetranychus mites in Korea such as T. viennensis Zaher, T. kanzawai Kishida, and T. truncams Ehara have been considered as quarantine pests by Canada and United States. Even though these mites are not feeders on apples, they are suspected to attach accidentally on apple h i t s in autumn as females enter the diapause. The characters used to identify Tetranychus mites have been confined to the shape of aedeagus in adult male. To develope a fast and accurate alternative identification protocol applied to hibernating female mites on apples, their mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) were examined to find out any polymorphisms to discriminate each species from the other ones. Three pairs of primers for polymerase chain reaction (PCR) were used to amplify cytochrome oxidase subunit I (CO-I) coding region in mitochondrial DNA5 of four species of Tetranycus mites. The longest amplified product was estimated its size as about 680 bp. Digestion with restriction enzymes, AluI, Ddel, and Sau3A, showed length polymorphisms, which will he useful as diagnostic markers to identify Tetranychus mites. Schematic restriction maps in amplified region were shown for each species.

  • Our Korean cuisine, due to growing interests in Korean culture along with outstanding performance of K-pop stars, is attracting worldly attention. As the worldly food pursuit tendency is changing from"fast food" to "slow food", preference for our Korean cuisine, which is well-known for its healthiness, is growing. However, our Korean cuisine, in terms of the world citizen's preference, as receiving evaluation for being lacking behind of Sushi of Japan, Dimsum of China, pizza and pasta of Italy, rice noodle of Vietnam, even to Indonesian and Middle-East foods, has not been achieving drastic advancements despite the cosmopolitan's attention. The previous studies were suggesting that, failure of a localization strategy that changes our traditional taste and aroma adaptive to foreigners' preference, is a cause for this. This study, through case studies of Korean food businesses in the US which have achieved a success through localization strategy, attempts to propose the following global entrepreneurial strategy of Koran food at the US dining out market. As a global entrepreneurial strategy for success, we propose, first a sales strategy not for Koreans but for local people as main customers, second a customization strategy which is not our traditional way but that meets local standard, and finally a committed entrepreneurship.

  • Seed morphology in the subtribe Agrimoniinae (Rosaceae) was examined using scanning electron microscopy to identify distinct characters and evaluate their evolution in a phylogenetic framework for five genera in the subtribe: Agrimonia L., Aremonia Neck. ex Nestl., Hagenia J.F. Gmel., Leucosidea Eckl. & Zeyh., and Spenceria Trimen. All genera have one or two mature achenes in a fruiting hypanthium. In the seed coats, the cell shape, size, wall features, and sculpturing vary across genera. Of most significance is the presence of papillae structures in both Agrimonia and Aremonia. Through the mapping of papillae features onto phylogenetic trees, either one or two changes in seed coats are hypothesized. The phylogenetic tree inferred from four nuclear and six chloroplast regions of sequence data suggests that at least two steps of papillae sculpturing on seed coats are required. On the other hand, in the phylogenetic tree of a low-copy nuclear gene, one independent evolutionary step is postulated to explain the current character states. In the latter hypothesis, the seed coat sculpturing also supports a monophyletic relationship for cosmopolitan Agrimonia and European endemic Aremonia. The seed coat sculpturing provides valuable information for inferring phylogenetic relationships at the generic level in the subtribe Agrimoniinae.

  • Cosmopolitan green macroalga, Ulva pertusa is a widely spread species in most coastal waters. This benthic alga is appearing on marine objectives causes significantly economical and social problems. To prevent fouling organisms, new antifouling (AF) agents, such as ziram, diruon, zinc pyrithione, copper pyrithione, DBNPA and triclosan are used. However, the evaluations of new antifouling system of those agents strongly need more information on algae species for considering environment effect. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to evaluate the activity of antifouling system using Ulva spores and Nitzschia pungens. In addition, new AFS were evaluated the toxicity of microalga, Nitzschia pungens. In the motility of Ulva spores, ziram and zinc pyrithione were shown 50% higher inhibition motility than diuron, copper pyritione, DBNPA and triclosan. Ziram was appered the highest AFS of Ulva sore attachment. Copper pyrithione at the concentration of $100{\mu}g/L$ was inhibited 80% growth rate comparison of control. In conclusion, each new AF agents showed their specific AF activities against marine organisms based on this work.
