Practical applicable model for estimating the carbonation depth in fly-ash based concrete structures by utilizing adaptive neuro-fuzzy inference system

  • Concrete carbonation is a prevalent phenomenon that leads to steel reinforcement corrosion in reinforced concrete (RC) structures, thereby decreasing their service life as well as durability. The process of carbonation results in a lower pH level of concrete, resulting in an acidic environment with a pH value below 12. This acidic environment initiates and accelerates the corrosion of steel reinforcement in concrete, rendering it more susceptible to damage and ultimately weakening the overall structural integrity of the RC system. Lower pH values might cause damage to the protective coating of steel, also known as the passive film, thus speeding up the process of corrosion. It is essential to estimate the carbonation factor to reduce the deterioration in concrete structures. A lot of work has gone into developing a carbonation model that is precise and efficient that takes both internal and external factors into account. This study presents an ML-based adaptive-neuro fuzzy inference system (ANFIS) approach to predict the carbonation depth of fly ash (FA)-based concrete structures. Cement content, FA, water-cement ratio, relative humidity, duration, and CO2 level have been used as input parameters to develop the ANFIS model. Six performance indices have been used for finding the accuracy of the developed model and two analytical models. The outcome of the ANFIS model has also been compared with the other models used in this study. The prediction results show that the ANFIS model outperforms analytical models with R-value, MAE, RMSE, and Nash-Sutcliffe efficiency index values of 0.9951, 0.7255 mm, 1.2346 mm, and 0.9957, respectively. Surface plots and sensitivity analysis have also been performed to identify the repercussion of individual features on the carbonation depth of FA-based concrete structures. The developed ANFIS-based model is simple, easy to use, and cost-effective with good accuracy as compared to existing models.

  • The present work describes the capabilities of laser beam deflection (LBD) technique for the analysis of the stresses developed during hydrogen diffusion through Pd foil electrode. First, we explain briefly the elasto-diffusive (Gorsky effect) and diffusion-elastic phenomena. A model for the diffusion-elastic phenomenon is theoretically derived from the solution of the Fick's equation for given initial and boundary conditions, Vegard's second law and Hooke's law. Second, we introduce how to apply the principle of LBD technique to the study on the stresses generated during hydrogen diffusion. From the comparison of the deflection transients numerically calculated with those experimentally measured, we finally discuss the change in the tensile deflection with time in terms of hydrogen concentration profile transient and hydrogen diffusivity.

Comparison of Mechanical Properties on Helical/Hoop Hybrid Wound HNT Reinforced CFRP Pipe with Water Absorption Behavior (CFRP 파이프의 와인딩 적층 패턴 설계 및 HNT 나노입자 보강에 따른 수 환경에서의 기계적 물성 평가)

  • Currently, fluid transfer steel pipes take a lot of time and expense to maintain all facilities due to new construction and painting or corrosion and aging. Therefore, this study was conducted for designing a CFRP pipe structure with high corrosion resistance and chemical resistance as a substitute for steel pipes. The helical/hoop pattern was cross-laminated to improve durability, and HNT was added to suppress the moisture absorption phenomenon of the epoxy. The HNT/CFRP pipe was manufactured by a filament winding process, and performed a mechanical property test, and a moisture absorption test in distilled water at 70℃. As a result, the highest bending strength was obtained when the hoop pattern was laminated with a thickness equivalent to 0.6% of the pipe. The 0.5 wt% HNT specimen had the highest moisture absorption resistance. Also, the delamination phenomenon at the interlayer interface was delayed, resulting in the lowest strength reduction rate.

  • Reinforced concrete structures are exposed throughout their lifetime to the phenomenon of carbonation, which considerably influences their durability by causing corrosion of the reinforcements. The fight against this phenomenon is usually ensured by anti-carbonation coatings which have the possibility of limiting the permeability to carbon dioxide or with coatings which absorb the CO2 present in the air. A coating with good crack-bridging (sealing) capacity will prevent water from entering through existing cracks in concrete. Despite the beneficial effect of these coatings, their durability decreases considerably over time with temperature and humidity. In order to use coatings made from local materials, not presenting any danger, available in abundance in our country, very economical and easy to operate is the main objective of this work. This paper aim is to contribute to the formulation of a corrected dune sand-based mortar as an anti-carbonation coating for concrete. The results obtained show that the cement mortar based on dune sand formulated has a very satisfactory compressive strength, a very low water porosity compared to ordinary cement mortar and that this mortar allows an improvement in the protection of the concrete against the carbonation of 60% compared to ordinary cement mortar based on alluvial sand. Moreover, the formulated cement mortars based on dune sand have good adhesion to the concrete support, their adhesion strengths are greater than 1.5MPa recommended by the standards.

A Study of Failure Mechanism through abnormal AlXOY Layer after pressure Cooker Test for DRAM device (DRAM 소자의 PCT 신뢰성 측정 후 비정상 AlXOY 층 형성에 의해 발생된 불량 연구)

  • This research scrutinizes the reason of failure after pressure cooker test (PCT) for DRAM device. We use the physical inspecting tools, such as microscope, SEM and TEM, and finally find the discolor phenomenon, corrosion of Al and delamination of inter-metal dielectric (IMD) in the failed devices after PCT. Furthermore, we discover the abnormal $Al_XO_Y$ layer on Al through the careful additional measurements. To find the reason, we evaluate the effect of package ball size and pinhole in passivation layer. Unfortunately, those aren't related to the problems. We also estimate halide effect of Al. The halogens such like Cl are contained within EMC material. Those result in the slight improving of PCT characteristics but do not perfectly solve the problems. We make a hypothesis of Galvanic corrosion. We can find the residue of Ti at the edge of pad open area. We can see the improving the PCT characteristics by the time split of repair etch. The possible mechanism of the PCT failure can be deduced as such following sequence of reactions. The remained Ti reacts on the pad Al by Galvanic corrosion. The ionized Al is easily react with the $H_2O$ supplied under PCT environment, and finally transfers to the abnormal $Al_XO_Y$ layer.

Characteristics in Paintability of Advanced High Strength Steels

  • It is expected that advanced high strength steels (AHSS) would be widely used for vehicles with better performance in automotive industries. One of distinctive features of AHSS is the high value of carbon equivalent (Ceq), which results in the different properties in formability, weldability and paintability from those of common grade of steel sheets. There is an exponential relation between Ceq and electric resistance, which seems also to have correlation with the thickness of electric deposition (ED) coat. Higher value of Ceq of AHSS lower the thickness of ED coat of AHSS. Some elements of AHSS such as silicon, if it is concentrated on the surface, affect negatively the formation of phosphates. In this case, silicon itself doesn't affect the phosphate, but its oxide does. This phenomenon is shown dramatically in the welding area. Arc welding or laser welding melts the base material. In the process of cooling of AHSS melt, the oxides of Si and Mn are easily concentrated on the surface of boundary between welded and non‐welded area because Si and Mn could be oxidized easier than Fe. More oxide on surface results in poor phosphating and ED coating. This is more distinctive in AHSS than in mild steel. General results on paintability of AHSS would be reported, being compared to those of mild steel.

Effect of Hydrogen on Dezincification of Cu-Zn Brass (Cu-Zn 황동에서 수소가 탈아연 부식에 미치는 영향)

  • The aim of this study is to consider the effect hydrogen on dezincification behavior of Cu-Zn alloys. The investigations include microstructural observations with scanning electron microscope and chemical composition analysis with energy dispersive spectrometer. The dezincification layer was found to occur in high pressure hydrogen atmosphere, not in air atmosphere. In addition, the layers penetrated into the inner side along the grain boundaries in the case of hydrogen condition. The shape of the dezincification layers was porous because of Zn dissolution from the ${\alpha}$ or ${\beta}$ phase. In the case of stress corrosion cracks formed in the Cu-Zn microstructure, the dezincification phenomenon with porous voids was also accompanied by grain boundary cracking.

A study of lifetime prediction of PV module using damp heat test (고온고습 시험을 이용한 실리콘 태양전지 모듈의 수명 예측 연구)

  • To analyze the phenomenon of corrosion in the PV module, we experimented damp heat test at $85^{\circ}C$/85% relative humidity(RH) and $65^{\circ}C$/85% RH for 2,000 hours, respectively. We used 30 mini-modules designed of 6inch one cell. Despite of 2,000 hours test, measured $P_{max}$ is not reached failure which is defined less than 80% compared to initial $P_{max}$. Therefore, we calculate proper curve fitting over 2,000 hours. Data less than 80% $P_{max}$ is found and B10 lifetime is calculated by the number of failure specimens and weibull distribution. Using B10 lifetime that the point of failure rate 10% and Peck's model, the predictable equation of lifetime was derived under temperature and humidity condition.

An Overview on Hydrogen Uptake, Diffusion and Transport Behavior of Ferritic Steel, and Its Susceptibility to Hydrogen Degradation

  • Development of high strength steel requires proper understanding of hydrogen behavior since the higher the steel strength the greater the susceptibility of hydrogen assisted cracking. This paper provides a brief but broad overview on hydrogen entry and transport behavior of high-strength ferritic steels. First of all, hydrogen absorption, diffusion and trapping mechanism of the steels are briefly introduced. Secondly, several experimental methods for analyzing the physical/chemical nature of hydrogen uptake and transport in the steels are reviewed. Among the methods, electrochemical permeation technique utilized widely for evaluating the hydrogen diffusion and trapping behavior in metals and alloys is mainly discussed. Moreover, a modified permeation technique accommodating the externally applied load and its application to a variety of steels are intensively explored. Indeed, successful utilization of the modified permeation technique equipped with a constant load testing device leads to significant academic progress on the hydrogen assisted cracking (HAC) phenomenon of the steels. In order to show how the external and/or residual stress affects mechanical instability of steel due to hydrogen ingress, the relationship among the microstructure, hydrogen permeation, and HAC susceptibility is briefly introduced.

Abnormal Coating Buildup on Si Bearing Steels in Zn Pot During Line Stop

  • A hot-dip simulator was utilized to replicate abnormal coating buildup observed during line stops at galvanize lines, assessing the influence of processing conditions on buildup (up to 14 mm/side). Steel samples from 19 coils (comprising IF, BH, LCAK, HSLA, DP600-DP1180, Si: 0.006 - 0.8 wt%, P: 0.009 - 0.045 wt%) were examined to explore the phenomenon of heavy coating growth. It was discovered that heavy coating buildup (~3 mm/h) and rapid strip dissolution (~0.17 mm/h) in a GA or GI pot can manifest with specific combinations of steel chemistry and processing conditions. The results reveal the formation of a unique coating microstructure, characterized by a blend of bulky Zeta crystals and free Zn pockets/networks due to the "Sandlin" growth mechanism. Key variables contributing to abnormal coating growth include steel Si content, anneal temperature, dew point in heating and soaking furnaces, Zn pot temperature, Zn bath Al%, and cold-rolling reduction%. At ArcelorMittal Dofasco galvanize lines, an automatic online warning system for operators and special scheduling for incoming Si-bearing steels have been implemented, effectively preventing further heavy buildup occurrences.
