Serviceability Assessment of Corroded Subsea Crude Oil Pipelines (부식된 해저 원유 파이프라인의 사용적합성 평가)

  • Pipelines are one of the most important structures in subsea equipment. It is the main equipment for transportation of crude oil and natural gas to the downstream facilities. Crude oil and natural gas leak will be carry out not only political and financial issues but also pollution to the environment. Inaccurate predictions of corrosion behavior will make hazardous consequences. The serviceability assessment of corroded structures is essential especially for subsea pipelines. As corrosion is concerned, the effects of failure due to significant reduction will make it hard to the pipeline operator to maintain the serviceability of pipelines. In this paper, the serviceability assessment of corroded crude oil pipeline is performed using the industry design code (Shell92, DNV RP F101, ASME B31G, BS 7910, PCORRC) and FEA depending on corrosion area. In last step, the future integrity of the subsea crude oil pipeline is assessed to predict the remaining year in service of crude oil pipelines.

Study on the Characteristics of the dehumidification LDPE film (제습 LDPE 필름에 관한 특성 분석연구)

  • In this study, based on CMA which is increasingly used for eco-friendly deicing materials, dehumidification MB made of sodium carbonate, $MgCl_2$/MgO (M/M), and SAP is to be produced. And its moisture absorption rate and dehumidification performance of the film are to be analyzed. And the data on the materials used for the dehumidification film are to be acquired. In case of the dehumidification MB, in which CMA and SAP are mixed, had poor film machinability due to foaming and moisture issues, but adding bentonite and calcium carbonate solved the problem. When a foaming agent was added to extend surface area between substances, CMA and M/M showed no remarkable difference, but SC showed large increase to 3.15 g/g. As the result of anti-corrosive test, CMA dehumidification film showed no corrosion while SC showed pitting corrosion and M/M showed corrosion.

Capacity assessment of existing corroded overhead power line structures subjected to synoptic winds

  • The physical infrastructure of the power systems, including the high-voltage transmission towers and lines as well as the poles and wires for power distribution at a lower voltage level, is critical for the resilience of the community since the failures or nonfunctioning of these structures could introduce large area power outages under the extreme weather events. In the current engineering practices, single circuit lattice steel towers linked by transmission lines are widely used to form power transmission systems. After years of service and continues interactions with natural and built environment, progressive damages accumulate at various structural details and could gradually change the structural performance. This study is to evaluate the typical existing transmission tower-line system subjected to synoptic winds (atmospheric boundary layer winds). Effects from the possible corrosion penetration on the structural members of the transmission towers and the aerodynamic damping force on the conductors are evaluated. However, corrosion in connections is not included. Meanwhile, corrosion on the structural members is assumed to be evenly distributed. Wind loads are calculated based on the codes used for synoptic winds and the wind tunnel experiments were carried out to obtain the drag coefficients for different panels of the transmission towers as well as for the transmission lines. Sensitivity analysis is carried out based upon the incremental dynamic analysis (IDA) to evaluate the structural capacity of the transmission tower-line system for different corrosion and loading conditions. Meanwhile, extreme value analysis is also performed to further estimate the short-term extreme response of the transmission tower-line system.

A STUDY ON THE GALVANIC CORROSION OF TITANIUM USING THE IMMERSION AND ELECTROCHEMICAL METHOD (침적법과 전기화학법을 이용한 티타늄의 갈바닉 부식에 관한 연구)

  • The purpose of this study was to evaluate the difference of the galvanic corrosion behaviour of the titanium in contact with gold alloy, silva-palladium alloy, and nickel-chromium alloy using the immersion and electrochemical method. And the effects of galvallit couples between titanium and the dental alloys were assessed for their usefulness as materials for superstructure. The immersion method was performed by measuring the amount of metal elementsreleased by Inductivey coupled plasma emission spectroscopy(ICPES) The specimen of fifteen titanium plates, the five gold alloy, five silver-palladium, five nickel-chromium plates, and twenty acrylic resin plates ware fabricated, and also the specimen of sixty titanium plugs, the thirty gold alloy, thirty silver-palladium, and nickelc-hromium plugs were made. Thereafter, each plug of gold alloy, silver-palladium, and nickel-chromium inserted into the the titanium and acrylic resin plate, and also titanium plug inserted into the acrylic resin plate. The combination specimens uf galvanic couples immersed in 70m1 artificial saliva solution, and also specimens of four type alloy(that is, titanium, gold, silver-palladium and nickel-chromium alloy) plugs were immersed solely in 70m1 artificial sativa solution. The amount of metal elements released was observed during 21 weeks in the interval of each seven week. The electrochemical method was performed using computer-controlled potentiosta(Autostat 251. Sycopel Sicentific Ltd., U.K). The wax patterns(diameter 11.0mm, thickness,in 1.5mm) of four dental casting alloys were casted by centrifugal method and embedded in self-curing acrylic resin to be about $1.0cm^2$ of exposed surface area. Embedded specimens were polished with silicone carbide paper to #2,000, and ultrasonically cleaned. The working electrode is the specimen of four dental casting alloys, the reference electrode is a saturated calmel electrode(SCE) and the ounter electrode is made of platinum plate. In the artificial saliva solution, the potential scanning was carried out starting from-700mV(SCE) TO +1,000mV(SCE) and the scan rate was 75mV/min. Each polarization curve of alloy was recorded automatically on a logrithmic graphic paper by XY recorder. From the polarization curves of each galvanic couple, corrosion potential and corrosion rates, that is, corrosion density were compared and order of corrosion tendency was determined. From the experiments, the following results were obtained : 1. In the case of immersing titanium, gold alloy, silver-palladium alloy, and nickel-chromium alloysolely in the artificial saliva solution(group 1, 2, 3, and 4), the total amount of metal elements released was that group 4 was greater about 2, 3 times than group 3, and about 7.8 times than group 2. In the case of group 1, the amount of titanium released was not found after 8 week(p<0.001). 2. In the case of galvanic couples of titanium in contact with alloy(group 5, 6), the total amount of metal elements released of group 5 and 6 was less than that of group 7, 8, 9, and 10(p<0.05). 3. In the case of galvanic couples of titanium in contact with silver-palladium alloy(group 7, 8), the total amount of metal elements released of group 7 was greater about twice than that of group 5, and that of group 8 was about 14 times than that of group 6(p<0.05). 4. In the case of galvanic couples of titanium in contact with nickel-chromium alloy(group 9, 10), the total amount of metal elements released of group 9 and 10 was greater about 1.8-3.2 times than that of group 7 and 8, and was greater about 4.3~25 times than that of group 5 and 6(p<0.05). 5. In the effect of galvanic corrosion according to the difference of the area ratio of cathode and anode, the total amount of metal elements released was that group 5 was greater about 4 times than group 6, group 8 was greater about twice than group 7, and group 10 was greater about 1.5 times than group 9(p<0.05). 6. In the effect of galvanic corrosion according to the elasped time during 21 week in the interval of each 7 week, the amount of metal elements released was decreased markedly in the case of galvanic couples of the titanium in contact with gold alloy and silver-palladium alloy but the total amount of nickel and beryllium released was not decreased markedly in the case of galvanic couples of the titanium in contact with nickel-chromium alloy(p<0.05). 7. In the case of galvanic couples of titanium in contact with gold alloy, galvanic current was lower than any other galvanic couple. 8. In the case of galvanic couples of titanium in contact with nickel-chromium alloy, galvanic current was highest among other galvanic couples.

Effects of NH4F and H2O on the Geometry of TiO2 Nanotubes (TiO2 나노튜브 형상에 미치는 NH4F와 H2O의 영향)

  • The aim of this work is the attainment of the $TiO_2-nanotube$ photocatalytic-growth condition using anodization, whereby the $NH_4F-H_2O$ weight ratio is appropriately controlled. We fabricated the $TiO_2$ nanotubes using a two-step anodization (first step is 1 hr; second step is 30 hr) under the ambient pressure and the room temperature at 60 V in ethylene-glycol solutions to investigate the effects of the $NH_4F$(0.1,0.3,0.5wt%) and $H_2O$(1-3wt%) on the $TiO_2-nanotube$ geometry and the photocatalytic efficiency. Further, the decomposition efficiency of the methylene blue on the $TiO_2$ nanotubes by the UN radiation depended on the geometrical change of the nanotube geometry, indicating the proportionality of the decomposition efficiency to the surface area that was affected by the $NH_4F$ and $H_2O$ concentrations. As the $NH_4F$ weight was increased, the surface area initially decreased but slightly increased later, and the length consistently increased. As the $H_2O$ weight was increased, the surface area and length initially increased, but later decreased with the 3 wt% $H_2O$.

A Study of Failure Mechanism through abnormal AlXOY Layer after pressure Cooker Test for DRAM device (DRAM 소자의 PCT 신뢰성 측정 후 비정상 AlXOY 층 형성에 의해 발생된 불량 연구)

  • This research scrutinizes the reason of failure after pressure cooker test (PCT) for DRAM device. We use the physical inspecting tools, such as microscope, SEM and TEM, and finally find the discolor phenomenon, corrosion of Al and delamination of inter-metal dielectric (IMD) in the failed devices after PCT. Furthermore, we discover the abnormal $Al_XO_Y$ layer on Al through the careful additional measurements. To find the reason, we evaluate the effect of package ball size and pinhole in passivation layer. Unfortunately, those aren't related to the problems. We also estimate halide effect of Al. The halogens such like Cl are contained within EMC material. Those result in the slight improving of PCT characteristics but do not perfectly solve the problems. We make a hypothesis of Galvanic corrosion. We can find the residue of Ti at the edge of pad open area. We can see the improving the PCT characteristics by the time split of repair etch. The possible mechanism of the PCT failure can be deduced as such following sequence of reactions. The remained Ti reacts on the pad Al by Galvanic corrosion. The ionized Al is easily react with the $H_2O$ supplied under PCT environment, and finally transfers to the abnormal $Al_XO_Y$ layer.

Evaluation of the corrosion property on the welded zone of seawater pipe by A.C shielded metal arc welding (교류 피복아크 용접에 의한 해수 배관 용접부위의 부식 특성 평가)

  • A seawater pipe of the engine room in the ships is being surrounded with severely corrosive environments caused by fast flowing of the seawater, containing aggressive chloride ion and high conductivity etc.. Therefore, the leakage of the seawater from its pipe have been often occurred due to its local corrosion by aggressive chloride ions. Subsequently, its leakage area is usually welded by AC shielded metal arc welding with various electrodes. In this study, when the sea water pipe is welded with several types of electrodes such as E4301, E4311, E4313 and E4316, a difference of the corrosion resistance on the welding metal zones was investigated using an electrochemical method, observing microstructure, measuring polarization behaviors and hardness. The weld metal zone welded with E4313 electrode exhibited the lowest value of hardness compared to other weld metal zones. In addition, its zone indicated also the best corrosion resistance than those of other weld metal zones. Furthermore, all of the weld metal zones revealed a relatively better corrosion resistance than those of the base metal zones. and also showed higher hardness than the base metal zones.

The study on corrosion of the inner area of closed box-girder for unpainted weathering steel bridges (무도장 내후성 강 교량의 밀폐형 박스거더 내부의 부식에 대한 고찰)

  • Weather proof steels are used for steel bridges due to its high corrosion resistance under atmospheric conditions. However, instead of forming stabilized rust layers, general rust occurs on weather proof steels under high humidity condition close to seawater or shady places. In Japan, therefore, they perform rust stabilization treatment instead of unpainted treatment due to severe atmospheric conditions. However, most of domestic weather proof steels were constructed unpainted in the form of closed box-girder, which makes the periodical repetition of dry and wet hard to occur. For the steel bridges constructed on the Han river, the evaporation of water, dew condensation due to temperature change, and stagnant water due to rain affect harmfully on the formation of passive film on weather proof steels. Thus, in this research, in order to analyze corrosion properties inside the closed box-girder for the unpainted weather proof steel bridge in the waterworks safety zone, multiple ways of analysis such as observation with eyes, cellophane-tape test, steel thickness measurement, surface corrosion potential measurement, electron microscope analysis, and X-ray diffraction analysis of the rust were performed. As a result, unstable rust layer was observed inside the closed box-girder, and severe corrosion was observed on the top and bottom of the flanges due to the effects of stagnant water caused by rain, dew condensation, and de-icing materials.

  • Because the pure titanium has superior corrosion resistance and formability compared with different material, it is widely used as material of welded heat exchanger. When the welding of heat exchanger is carried out, certain area in which welding start and end are overlapped occurs. The humping of back bead is formed in the overlap area due to partial penetration. Thus in this study, the experiments were carried out by changing the length and wave shape of overlap area, and then the weldabiliay was evaluated through the observation of microstructure, the measurement of hardness and tensile-shear strength test in the overlap area. When overlap length was 9.8mm, humping bead was suppressed. The microstructure of overlap area coarsened and its hardness increased due to remelting. As a result of tensile-shear strength test in the overlap area according to applying the wave shape control, it was confirmed that the overlap area applied wave shape control had more excellent yield strength and ductility.

A Study on the Real Condition and Life Time of the RCD (누전차단기 실태조사 및 교체주기에 관한 연구)

  • In this study, an analysis of the used RCD's condition is conducted to assess the effect on environment of installation area, terms of use, corrosion, contamination etc. According to KS C 4613, the used RCDs were tested to get date which is the RCD's life time. And then, the date is analysed using Minitab which is a statistical program for reliability analysis. As a result, The RCD's MTTF for the all samples is $12.7{\pm}0.23$ years. and the MTTF of RCDs which are used indoor area is $12.9{\pm}0.34$ years, the MTTF of RCDs which are used outdoor area is $11.9{\pm}0.30$ years. Futhermore, the MTTF of RCDs which are used in dry area is a $13.1{\pm}0.26$ years, the MTTF of RCDs which are used in dust area is $13.0{\pm}0.57$ years, the MTTF of RCDs which are used in moisture area is $8.4{\pm}0.77$ years.
