  • Hydrochar has been generated from food waste via hydrothermal carbonization (HTC) reaction. As a solid product of HTC reaction, hydrochar has a great potential as an adsorbent of pollutants from the various media. The surface area and pore volumes are very important parameters to be served as an adsorbent. It requires an expensive equipment and consumes time to measure those parameter. Therefore, titration methods including iodine and methylene blue adsorption were evaluated to be correlated with that of BET analysis. Even though the absolute values of the computed surface area and pore volumes were not able to be matched directly, the patterns of change were successfully correlated. Among the reaction conditions, the reaction time and temperature at $230^{\circ}C$ for 4 h was determined as an optimization condition, which confirmed by titration method and BET analysis. Titration method for surface area and pore volumes computed by combination of iodine and methylene blue adsorbing values would be a simple and fast way of determining the optimization condition for hydrochar as an adsorbent produced by HTC reaction.

  • This study was conducted to evaluate filtering rate (FR) and pseudofeces production (PFP) of a freshwater filter-feeding bivalve, Unio douglasiae, on a toxic cyanobacterium (Microcystis aeruginosa). The experiments were conducted under the various conditions of water temperature $(5{\sim}35^{\circ}C)$, mussel size $(5.6{\sim}13.3cm)$ and food con centrations $(49{\sim}491{\mu}g\;Chl-{\alpha}L^{-1})$. Among the applied temperature, the maximum FR $(0.41L\;gAFDW^{-1}hr^{-1})$ and PFP (0.47mg $gAFDW^{-1}hr^{-1}$) were observed at 15 and $25^{\circ}C$, respectively. Both weight-based FR and PFP were not correlated with the mussel size, and the values lied in a limited range with some degree of variation. Likewise, no significant relations between FR and PFP was observed in the mussel size. The FR values were negatively correlated with food concentration, while PFP showed positive correlation. Among the applied food concentrations, the maximum FR (0.34L $gAFDW^{-1}hr^{-1}$) and PFP (0.06mg $gAFDW^{-1}hr^{-1}$) appeared in $113{\mu}g\;Chl-{\alpha}L^{-1}$ and $491{\mu}g\;Chl-{\alpha}L^{-1}$, respectively. These results indicate that the grazing of Unio douglasiae are affected by various parameters, and it may be applied as an effective biofilter to inhibit Microcystis bloom under appropriate application. However, further studies on the fate of excreted pseudofeces are needed to understand their possibility of stimulating nuisant algal growth.

  • The impact of rainfall events on the sanitary indicator bacteria density of the shellfish-growing waters in Geoje Bay and Jaran Bay in Korea was investigated. The shellfish-growing area in Geoje Bay, which is a nearly closed basin, was not affected significantly, except near the stream mouth after 11.5 mm of rainfall in 1 day. However, most of the shellfish-growing water in the bay was polluted by fecal coliform bacteria after rain as heavy as 43.0 mm, and the levels of fecal indicator bacteria in some of the sea near the coast did not recover completely until 24 hours after the rainfall. By contrast, in Jaran Bay, which has no significant pollution source in the drainage area, although 9.3-490 MPN/100 mL of fecal coliform bacteria were detected near the stream mouth after rainfall of 33.5 and 81.0 mm, a very low level of the indicator bacteria was detected in the designated shellfish-growing area. During the investigation, the correlations between the sanitary indicator bacteria density and physical parameters, such as salinity and turbidity, were evaluated. Both the total coliform and fecal coliform densities were inversely correlated with salinity. Turbidity was positively correlated with the indicator bacteria density. The survey results suggest that for more efficient management of the shellfish-growing areas located in coastal areas, such as shellfish harvesting after rainfall, a detailed investigation of the effects of rainfall on the bacterial water quality in each growing area is needed.

  • Background: When patients with chronic respiratory symptoms have a normal spirometry result, it is not always easy to consider bronchial asthma as the preferential diagnosis. Forced expiratory flow between 25% and 75% of vital capacity ($FEF_{25{\sim}75%}$) is known as a useful diagnostic value of small airway diseases. However, it is not commonly used, because of its high individual variability. We evaluated the pattern of bronchodilator responsiveness (BDR) and the correlation between $FEF_{25{\sim}75%}$ and BDR in patients with suspicious asthma and normal spirometry. Methods: Among patients with suspicious bronchial asthma, 440 adult patients with a normal spirometry result (forced expiratory volume in one second [$FEV_1$]/forced vital capacity [FVC] ${\geq}70%$ & $FEV_1%$ predicted ${\geq}80%$) were enrolled. We divided this group into a positive BDR group (n=43) and negative BDR group (n=397), based on the result of BDR. A comparison was carried out of spirometric parameters with % change of $FEV_1$ after bronchodilator (${\Delta}FEV_1%$). Results: Among the 440 patients with normal spirometry, $FEF_{25{\sim}75%}%$ predicted were negatively correlated with ${\Delta}FEV_1%$ (r=-0.22, p<0.01), and BDR was positive in 43 patients (9.78%). The means of $FEF_{25{\sim}75%}%$ predicted were $64.0{\pm}14.5%$ in the BDR (+) group and $72.9{\pm}20.8%$ in the BDR (-) group (p<0.01). The negative correlation between $FEF_{25{\sim}75%}%$ predicted and ${\Delta}FEV_1%$ was stronger in the BDR (+) group (r=-0.38, p=0.01) than in the BDR (-) group (r=-0.17, p<0.01). In the ROC curve analysis, $FEF_{25{\sim}75%}$ at 75% of predicted value had 88.3% sensitivity and 40.3% specificity for detecting a positive BDR. Conclusion: BDR (+) was not rare in patients with suspicious asthma and normal spirometry. In these patients, $FEF_{25{\sim}75%}%$ predicted was well correlated with BDR.

  • This study was conducted to estimate heritabilities and genetic correlations of economic traits and body conformations in Korean Native Ogol fowl. The data analyzed were the record of 450 pullets bred from 150 dams and 20 sires of the fowl obtained from June 18, 1987 to February 6, 1989. The results of this study were summarized as follows ; The estimates of heritability for body weight, egg weight and shank length from combined variance components were relatively high, ranging from 0.415 to 0.558, while those for age at first egg, egg production and breast width were moderate, ranging from 0.301 to 0.334. For genetic correlations, body weights were negatively correlated with egg production, ranging from -0.552 to -0.309, while positive correlations were found between body weight and egg weight, ranging from 0.285 to 0.380. Also, egg production was negatively correlated with egg weight, ranging from -0.383 to -0.381. The shank length showed very high positive correlations with the body weights and age at 1st egg, ranging from 0.328 to 0.843. Hence the improvement in shank length will increase the body weight as well as the age at 1st egg.

  • In this study, we describe a novel function of TNNC1 (Troponin C1, Slow Skeletal and Cardiac Type), a component of actin-bound troponin, as a tumor suppressor of lung adenocarcinoma (LUAD). First, the expression of TNNC1 was strongly down-regulated in cancer tissues compared to matched normal lung tissues, and down-regulation of TNNC1 was shown to be strongly correlated with increased mortality among LUAD patients. Interestingly, TNNC1 expression was enhanced by suppression of KRAS, and ectopic expression of TNNC1 in turn inhibited KRASG12D-mediated anchorage independent growth of NIH3T3 cells. Consistently, activation of KRAS pathway in LUAD patients was shown to be strongly correlated with down-regulation of TNNC1. In addition, ectopic expression of TNNC1 inhibited colony formation of multiple LUAD cell lines and induced DNA damage, cell cycle arrest and ultimately apoptosis. We further examined potential correlations between expression levels of TNNC1 and various clinical parameters and found that low-level expression is significantly associated with invasiveness of the tumor. Indeed, RNA interference-mediated down-regulation of TNNC1 led to significant enhancement of invasiveness in vitro. Collectively, our data indicate that TNNC1 has a novel function as a tumor suppressor and is targeted for down-regulation by KRAS pathway during the carcinogenesis of LUAD.

  • Postharvest insect pest control is necessary for agricultural industry including domestic consumer markets and exporting products to meet quarantine issue. Especially, the organic or environmentally friendly agricultural products do not fit to the traditional chemical postharvest treatments mostly using methyl bromide. As an alternative, a physical treatment called CATTS (controlled atmosphere and temperature treatment) has been developed to control various insect and mite pests on apple and several stone fruits. This study was designed to determine the CATTS conditions to control the oriental fruit moth, Grapholita molesta, which is restricted in exporting the infested apples. To apply CATTS on this insect pest, the most heat-tolerant stage was determined. Among the immature stages locating on the fruits, the fifth instar larvae were the most tolerant to $44^{\circ}C$ for 20 min. The ramping rate (the time to increase chamber temperature from $25^{\circ}C$ to $46^{\circ}C$) was positively correlated with the CATTS efficiency under 15% $CO_2$ and 1% $O_2$. After the ramping step, the duration of CATTS was positively correlated with CATTS efficiency. In addition, the CATTS efficiency was highly dependent on the fruit internal temperature at $44^{\circ}C$. From all these parameters, we developed a standard protocol yielding 100% control efficiency of CATTS against apples infested by 4,378 larvae including 2,104 fifth instar individuals.

  • Since the forest succession is changing process in the structure and function of a forest for the long period of time, the objectivity of the process could be improved through the development of model or statistical methodology. This study was carried out to estimate succession index based on climax index and species composition parameters, thereupon to compare the succession index with life form and species diversity so as to grasp the information of quantitative successional process for the six community types in the natural deciduous forest of Mt. Jumbong area. The results indicated that Quercus mongolica-Tilia amurensis community had the greatest succession index of 67.5, followed by Abies holophylla-Fraxinus mandshurica community with 67.4. Juglans mandshurica-Cornus controversa community was recorded the smallest value of 60.5. The succession index of overstory tended to increase considerably at the stage of steady state for all community types except Quercus mongolica-Tilia amurensis community. However, The index of midstory hardly varied as the forest succession would progress for all community types. The succession index was negatively correlated to wind-water dispersion type of life form and positively to animal dispersion type at the 5% probability level. On the other hand, the index was not significantly correlated to the species richness and Shannon's species diversity index.

  • In this paper, the empirical relations of skin friction and end bearing resistance with the results of site investigation in soft rock are proposed through the analysis of bi-directional pile load tests of rock socketed drilled shafts performed at large offshore bridge foundations and high-rise building projects (13 test piles in 4 projects). The site investigation and drilling for bi-directional pile load tests were performed at the centers of test piles, and f-w curves for skin friction and q-w curves for end bearing were plotted based on load-transfer measurements. From the above curves, the empirical relations of skin friction and end bearing resistance with the results of site investigation depending on the mobilized displacement are determined by multiple regression analysis and compared with previous studies. Since the f-w and q-w curves of rock-socketed piles in Korea show hardening behavior according to mobilized displacement, the developed empirical relations by the mobilized displacement are more reasonable than those of previous studies which could not consider the mobilized displacement and suggested the ultimate capacity with unconfined compressive strength only. Particularly, the developed equations correlated with unconfined compressive strength show the best correlations among the equations correlated with other parameters.

  • The courtship and fighting behaviors and the sexual dimorphism of the salamander Hynohius leechil were studied. The parameters, snout vent length, body length (from snout to tail tip), and proportion of snout vent length to body size were larger in the female than the male. Five physical parameter in males were significantly correlated with one another, body length, snout vent length, head width, tail vent length, and tall depth, while all, except tail depth, were significantly correlated in females. Sexual behavior of H. leechIl involved external fertilization and consisted of three stages, identifying the female, aifrading the female, and insemination. The identification stage consisted of a positive advance by the male toward the female and display of snout contact. The male attracted the female with chin rubbing, tail undulation, smelling, and digging displays. The insemination process consisted of four phases, amplex, separating egg sacs from the female's cloacal, fertilizing eggs, and post fertilization. liighting behaviors were quite simple. The attacking male would generally bite the opposite male's upper chin or hind limbs and then shakes his head two or three times. The bitten male, which in most cases was of a dissimilar body size, quicidy escaped from the attacking male. After fighting, winning male usually displayed rapid tail undulation.
