  • In recent years, flame synthesis has absorbed a great deal of attention as a combustion method for the production of metal oxide nanoparticles, carbon nanotubes, and other related carbon nanostructures, over the existing conventional methods. Flame synthesis is an energy-efficient, scalable, cost-effective, rapid and continuous process, where flame provides the necessary chemical species for the nucleation of carbon structures (feed stock or precursor) and the energy for the production of carbon nanostructures. The production yield can be optimized by altering various parameters such as fuel profile, equivalence ratio, catalyst chemistry and structure, burner configuration and residence time. In the present report, diffusion and premixed flame synthesis methods are reviewed to develop a better understanding of factors affecting the morphology, positioning, purity, uniformity and scalability for the development of carbon nanotubes along with their correlated carbonaceous derivative nanostructures.

  • The purpose of this study was to analyze spectral versus cepstral measurements in esophageal speakers. The comparison between the measurements in thirteen male esophageal speakers was compared with the control group of thirteen normal speakers using the sustained vowel /a/. The main results can be summarized as below: (a) the CPP and L/H ratio of the esophageal group were significantly lower than those of the control group (b) the CPP was significantly correlated with the spectral parameters such as jitter, shimmer, NHR and VTI, and (c) the ROC analysis showed that the threshold of 10.25dB for the CPP achieved a good classification for esophageal speakers, with 100% perfect sensitivity and specificity. Thus, it was known that cepstral-based acoustic measures such as CPP, may be more reliable predictors than other spectral-based acoustic measures such as jitter and shimmer. And it was found that cepstral-based acoustic measures were effective in distinguishing esophageal voice quality from normal voice quality. This research will contribute to establishing a baseline related to speech characteristics in voice rehabilitation with laryngectomees.

  • This paper presents a method for identifying the parameter set of inelastic constitutive equations, which is based on an Evolutionary Algorithm. The advantage of the method is that appropriate parameters can be identified even when the measured data are subject to considerable errors and the model equations are inaccurate. The design of experiments suited for the parameter identification of a material model by Chaboche under the uniaxial loading and stationary temperature conditions was first considered. Then the parameter set of the model was identified by the proposed method from a set of experimental data. In comparison to those by other methods, the resultant stress-strain curves by the proposed method correlated better to the actual material behaviors.

  • Hard disk drives (HDD) in computer are used extensively as data storage capacity. The trend in the computer industry to produce smaller disk drives rotating at higher speeds requires an improved understanding of fluid motion in the space between disks. Laser sheet and digital camera was used for 2-dimensional visualization of the unsteady flow between co-rotating disks in air with a cylindrical enclosure (or shroud). Geometric parameters are gap height (H) between disks, and gap distance (G) between disk tip and shroud. The lobe-structured boundary between inner region and outer region was detected by inserted particles, and the number of dominant vortices was determined clearly It is found from flow visualization that the number of vortex cells can be correlated with Reynolds number based on H which is defined as $Re_H={\Omega}RH/v$ ranging from $7.96{\times}10^2$ to $1.43{\times}10^4$, and decreases as the disk speed increases. The lobe pattern by vortex cells is changed to a circular pattern for the wide gap than narrow one.

  • Friction stir welding(FSW) is an relatively new solid state joining process. A1606l-T6 aluminium alloy has gathered wide acceptance in the fabrication of light weight structures requiring a high strength to weight ratio and good corrosion resistance. This friction stir process(FSP) uses a non-consumable tool to generate frictional heat in the abutting surfaces. The welding parameters such as tool rotational speed, welding speed, etc., and tool pin profile playa major role in deciding FSP zone formation in A16061-T6 aluminium alloy. Tow different tool pin profiles have been used to fabricate the joints. The formation of friction stir processed zone has been analysed macroscopically. Tensile properties of the joints have been evaluated and correlated with the friction stir processed zone formation.

  • Changes in biochemical constituents and physiological alteration were studied in various intensities (1-5%, 6-15%, 16-30%, 31-50% and > 50%) of leaf spot (Myrothecium roridum) on mulberry leaves and compared with healthy leaves. Chlorophyll, total soluble sugar and total protein were decreased (P < 0.01), but total phenol increased due to pathogen infection. Changes in biochemical constituents showed significant correlation with intensity of disease. Chlorophyll ($r^2$= 0.92), and protein (($r^2$= 0.83) possessed negative while phenol (($r^2$= 0.61) possessed positive correlation. Photosynthetic rate, transpiration rate, stomatal conductance, moisture content (%) and physiological water use efficiency (pWUE) were decreased, but stomatal resistance increased in the infected leaves. Physiological parameters also possessed significant (P < 0.01) correlation with disease intensity. Photosynthetic rate (($r^2$= 0.96), transpiration rate ($r^2$=0.88), stomatal conductance (($r^2$= = 0.65), physiological water use efficiency (($r^2$= 0.88) and moisture content (r = 0.85) were negatively but stomatal resistance (($r^2$= 0.75) was positively correlated to disease intensities.

  • Bulkogi(roast beef) seasoning stored without cap at 5$^{\circ}C$ and 23$^{\circ}C$ and within capped boule at 5$^{\circ}C$, 23$^{\circ}C$, 38$^{\circ}C$, 48$^{\circ}C$ and heat cycling(38$^{\circ}C$-1 week and 5$^{\circ}C$-1 week) and investigated sensory quality, pH, VBN, amino-N, surface color, and viable cell counts during 6 month storage. Nonpackaged Bulkogi seasoning was deteriorated by molds after 2 weeks at 23$^{\circ}C$ but did not showed any significant quality changes at 5$^{\circ}C$ for 1 month. Sensory scores of packaged sample rapidly declined with the temperature increase but chemical criteria was not significantly changed depending on temperature and storage time. Correlations between sensory scores and chemical parameters was not found, but sensory scores on color was correlated with lightness(L. value) of surface color(r=0.899). Heat cycle storage resulted in similar changes in quality to 38$^{\circ}C$ storage. Ql0 values calculated by sensory evaluation results as a quality index was 6, and the shelf-life of packaged Bulkogi seasoning was predicted 88 months at 23$^{\circ}C$.

  • Using a general Saccharomyces cerevisiae as a model strain, continuous ethanol fermentation was carried out in a stirred tank bioreactor with a working volume of 1,500 mL. Three different gravity media containing glucose of 120, 200 and 280 g/L, respectively, supplemented with 5 g/L yeast extract and 3 g/L peptone, were fed into the fermentor at different dilution rates. Although complete steady states developed for low gravity medium containing 120 g/L glucose, quasi-steady states and oscillations of the fermented parameters, including residual glucose, ethanol and biomass were observed when high gravity medium containing 200 g/L glucose and very high gravity medium containing 280 g/L glucose were fed at the designated dilution rate of $0.027\;h^{-1}$. The observed quasi-steady states that incorporated these steady states, quasi-steady states and oscillations were proposed as these oscillations were of relatively short periods of time and their averages fluctuated up and down almost symmetrically. The continuous kinetic models that combined both the substrate and product inhibitions were developed and correlated for these observed quasi-steady states.

  • The pharmacokinetics of atenolol (25 mg/kg, i.v.) in the folate-induced renal failure rabbits was studied. Renal failure was induced by the i.v. injection of folate (50, 100, and 200 mg/kg). At folate dose of 100 and 200 mg/kg, the serum creatinine concentration (Scr) and blood urea nitrogen (BUN) increased significantly compared with control rabbits. Plasma concentrations and AUC of atenolol increased significantly at folate dose of 100 and 200 mg/kg. The elimination rate constant $(K_{el})$ and total body clearance $(CL_t)$ of atenolol decreased significantly, and half-life ($t_{1/2}$) and mean residence time (MRT) of atenolol increased significantly at folate dose of 100 and 200 mg/kg. The serum creatinine concentration $(S_{cr})$ correlated well (p<0.05) with half-life $(t_{1/2})$ and elimination rate constant $(K_{el})$ of atenolol, as well as BUN with AUC and total body clearance $(CL_t)$ of atenolol.

  • In this paper, we proposed a fuzzy controller for the evaluation of the quantization Parameters in the H.263 coder to optimize the subjective quality of each coded frame, keeping the transmission rate constant. We adopted the Mamdani method for fuzzification and the centroid method for defuzzification. The energy and entropy are correlated to features of the HVS in spatial domain, while motion vectors are used to estimate the temporal characteristics of the signal. And then, the fuzzy inputs adapted the variance and the entropy in spatial domain, and the motion vector in temporal domain. We induced the fuzzy membership function and decided the fuzzy relevance to be compatible in visual characteristics. And then, we designed FAM banks. The fuzzy technology has been applied to a practical video compression. This results is obtained an effective rate control technique, an optimum bit allocation and a high subjective quality using fuzzy quantization.
